In what has been a terrible year for the loss of great stars we all grew up with in film and music, the news of the sudden passing of Vince Rotolo, creator of the much loved B Movie Cast podcast has hit hardest.
Vince was a huge supporter of Cinema Retro and always mentioned it in his weekly “Sunday Service”. He would always say that Retro was exceptional and its time that we said the same about him. Vince was such a cool and engaging presence that he put all those he spoke to at ease. He was a fan of the fan because he was a fan himself. I spent many great times with Vince, his beloved wife Mary and co-host Nic Brown both here and in the States. His shows were like listening in on a family...

Producer Michael Wrenn and Us director David Burris are developing Doubles, a slacker comedy about an aging tennis pro who is forced to play one last game with his ex-partner, who had slept with his wife.
That will be their second collaboration following The World Made Straight, a North Carolina-shot coming-of-age thriller which opens in Us cinemas and on-demand platforms on January 9.
Us author Nic Brown is writing the screenplay of Doubles based on his novel. Wrenn tells If the plan is to shoot in northern Ontario, with pick-ups in a Southern state that has tax incentives in late 2015.
The original idea of shooting in North Carolina was nixed after Tea Party Senators conspired to annul the state's location incentives.
The World Made Straight stars The Railway Man.s Jeremy Irvine as a high school drop-out who struggles to decide between the dark path he is on and the chance at a new life.

"The chain in those handcuffs is high-tensile steel. It'd take you ten minutes to hack through it with this. Now, if you're lucky, you could hack through your ankle in five minutes. Go." — Mel Gibson, 'Mad Max'
Greetings from the apocalypse! Hopefully this isn't the end, but I have to depart the sandblasted pages of this column for a brief sojourn across the wasteland. With a little luck, a lot of gasoline and the aid of a gangly autogyro pilot I should find my way back in a few months time, but until then enjoy this last weekend column … for now.
Friday, August 2
Pow! In Theaters
As I wrote earlier this week for Film.com, "2 Guns" will without a doubt take its place among the pantheon of extremely forgettable Denzel Washington action movies. Hell, the trailer could have been one of those parodies from the beginning of "Tropic Thunder.

Philip Roth turns 80 next month, with 27 novels behind him, but when he announced his retirement last November, it felt like he was actually cutting something short—possibly the most prolific, probably the most distinguished, and certainly the most debated career in postwar American fiction. Roth was never just a novelist to readers but an iconoclast and narcissist, a Jewish cultural hero (villain to some), a (probable) misogynist, a literary celebrity who folded his own life into novels like they were tabloids (or metafictions?) and, after Toni Morrison, our great American hope, The Man Who Should Win the Nobel Prize (If Any Man Should). Just ahead of Philip Roth: Unmasked, an intimate documentary airing on PBS next month, we asked a panel of 30 literati to assess his oeuvre.Participants: Steven Amsterdam, Sam Anderson, Rosecrans Baldwin, Elif Batuman, Christopher Beha, David Bezmozgis, Charles Bock, Nic Brown, Joshua Cohen, Siddhartha Deb, Bret...

The second album from Crystal Castles surprised a lot of people by how good it was. Today’s track of the day features one the singles from the record, Not In Love, an exciting take on Platinum Blonde’s 1984 Canadian hit with the Cure’s frontman on vocals. The visuals in the video were created by Video Marsh with editing and cinematography by Nic Brown. Take a listen.

The Saw franchise has been going strong now for six films. Every Halloween since 2004 the killer Jigsaw has returned to play his games with hapless victims. Now actress, model and musician Jon Mack is ready to play as she joins the series in Saw VI. Of course there is more going on in this multitalented performer's world than just solving Jigsaw's puzzles; she's got two new films coming out on the SyFy channel and her band, Auradrone, is shaking things up musically with their album Whitelite Britelite. Now Jon takes some time out of her film and music career to talk about some her new projects, how she feels the internet has changed things in the music business, and why you may find her down at the gun range choosing between her Glock and a shotgun!
Jon, you're in the newest installment in the Saw franchise: Saw VI.

What can you say about someone whose list of interests include horror movies, anime, video games, guns and bows, serial killers, and kung fu movies? Well if you’re talking about Nikki Kruex, you can say that you’re just scratching the surface of this actress, model, musician, paranormal investigator and artistic Jill-of-all-trades...
In fact if you visit her website, www.nikkihomicidek.ws, you’ll find a page for just about every aspect of the entertainment industry. Somehow Nikki still manages to find time for fun and when she does you may find her doing anything from shooting a crossbow to playing Grand Theft Auto. Of course with multiple film projects, a new album coming out soon and a paranormal investigation show just waiting to take off, you won’t find her relaxing much. Fortunately, Nic Brown managed to pin down this creative tornado long enough...
