Xenia Goodwin shooting at the Opera House.
Xenia Goodwin made her acting debut in ABC series.Dance Academy, which ran from 2010-2013. Three years after the show wrapped, Goodwin returned to the role of Tara Webster for a Dance Academy feature shot in Sydney and New York in the middle of last year. She talks to If about reuniting with old friends and commiting to a career as an actor.
Was it strange returning to Dance Academy after so long?
The idea of it was, but once I got back in it was like we never stopped. I guess I felt like I belonged there. It was my life, and I missed it a lot..
How old were you when you started the show?
I was just turning 15. I was quite young, and determined to be a ballet dancer at the time. I.d left school and I was doing that vocationally.

The feature adaptation of ABC TV’s hugely successful series for teens is less Flashdance and more Black Swan meets The Baby-Sitters Club
Some of us look back on the turbulence of our university years with a mixture of horror and nostalgia, recalling the title of Errol Flynn’s autobiography. For others, like Tara Webster (Xenia Goodwin), their wicked, wicked ways encompass those diabolical occasions when they neglected to pick up kombucha and activated almonds on the way home from dance class.
Or, in the case of her fame-hungry friend Kat (Alicia Banit), when a social media post generates bad engagement – as in a topless selfie that derails her credibility (who would have thought?) as the star of a squeaky-clean kids show. This puts Kat in a pantheon of badly behaving children’s television personalities, Death to Smoochy’s Rainbow Randolph leading the modern charge.

'Dance Academy' star Xenia Goodwin shooting in New York (courtesy Werner Film Holdings).
Screenwriter Samantha Strauss makes her feature debut this month with Dance Academy, based on the show she created with producer Joanna Werner in 2010..
Earlier feature scripts went nowhere, the writer tells If. "I.d written a film before that had a young female protagonist and that was incredibly difficult to get up. We were told at the time that it.s not a market for Australia."
But the support of StudioCanal and the show's German partner Zdf made a Dance Academy feature possible, and Strauss is thrilled with the result.
"Everything I.ve ever worked on, you just hate everything you.ve ever written and every moment is awful and you can.t imagine what it looks like," she said..
"This is the first experience where. no I shouldn.t say that (laughs). But when we saw the rough cut,...
