Olivia Colman and John Lithgow head the cast of “Jimpa,” a multi-generational family tale involving a nonbinary teenager and her mother who take a trip to see their gay grandfather. The Australia- and Europe-set film is directed by Sophie Hyde, whose most recent film was the breakout “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande.”
The film is now in its third week of production in Amsterdam and will later shoot in Adelaide, Australia and Helsinki, Finland.
Rights to the film are being handled by Protagonist Pictures in much of the world and by CAA Media Finance in North America, with sales kicking off at the Cannes Market next week. The film has already locked in Cineart as distributor in the Benelux region and Kismet and The Unquiet Collective for Australia and New Zealand.
Oscar winner Colman’s recent credits include “The Favourite,” “The Lost Daughter” and the hit Netflix series “The Crown.

Get ready for a spooktacular time with Huluween‘s four-episode event as American Horror Stories returns to the platform exclusively beginning Thursday, October 26. In anticipation of the twisted tales, FX has unveiled several first-look posters and a new teaser trailer with plenty of nightmare-inducing imagery. The spinoff of American Horror Story is similar to the original in that it’s an anthology, but instead of following a different story each season, American Horror Stories follows a different story each episode. (Credit: FX) Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, American Horror Stories first debuted in 2021 and has already delivered 15 installments to viewers since its launch. It’s unclear who will star in the latest batch of episodes, but the offshoot series has featured plenty of American Horror Story vets over the years including Cody Fern, Matt Bomer, Billie Lourd, Dylan McDermott, and Denis O’Hare, among many others. In the meantime,...

Angelica Ross announced on Twitter/X that Emma Roberts called and apologized to her over an alleged incident that occurred on the set of “American Horror Story: 1984.” Ross revealed during a previous Instagram Live that “Emma” (she only said Roberts’ first name and her initials at the time) intentionally misgendered her in between filming a take.
“Thank you @RobertsEmma for calling and apologizing, recognizing your behavior was not that of an ally,” Ross wrote in an update to fans. “I will leave the line open to follow up on your desire to do better and support social justice causes with your platform.”
In the original Instagram Live video, Ross said Roberts was joking around, saying “Anglica is being mean” while speaking with a man named John on set (presumably “AHS” director John J. Gray). Ross, who is transgender, said John then told the two women, “Ok, ladies, you know,...

Lisa Rinna is best known for playing the characters of Billie Reed on Days of Our Lives and Taylor McBride on Melrose Place… or at least she was, until she was featured on eight seasons of the reality series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. That may be what most viewers recognize her from these days. But Rinna recently left that Real Housewives show, and now Deadline reports that she has signed on to appear in an episode of the Hulu horror anthology series American Horror Stories.
The episode Rinna will be in is titled Tapeworm, and most of the filming of that episode was already completed before Deadline confirmed her involvement. That’s the only information that’s available at this time.

This year’s first-round Primetime Emmy nominations ballot includes a total of 51 Best Limited Series hopefuls. This is down from 2022’s unusually high total of 61, yet still much higher than 2021’s 37, 2020’s 41, and 2019’s 35.
All 20,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 26 to cast their 2023 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. After six years of not having to limit their choices in any categories, members’ selections can now not be greater than the number of eventual nominations for a given award, which, in this case, will be five.
Unlike comedy and drama series, which simply appear on the ballot by name, the limited series submissions include plot descriptions and cast lists. Which of the shows listed below do you think will land in the final lineup on...

He’s baaack! Zachary Quinto appeared in the first two “American Horror Story” installments as gay homeowner Chad Warwick (Season 1’s “Murder House”) and as fan-fave serial killer Bloody Face (Season 2’s “Asylum”), but then he took a nine-year hiatus before popping up last year as erotic art curator Sam (Season 11’s “NYC”). Well, “AHS” viewers won’t have to wait another nine years to see Quinto again, as he’ll return to the franchise in Season 12’s “Delicate” in a mysterious role, which brings his tally to four total characters.
Quinto confirmed the news at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of his movie “He Went That Way.” Speaking about new “AHS” cast member Kim Kardashian, the bearded actor told reporters, “I did a cameo on this season of ‘American Horror Story’ and I got to meet her. Respawn Entertainment surprised gamers and Star Wars fans alike with Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The title is not only a blast to play, but its story and characters are fleshed out, thanks in no small part to its cast.
Instead of starring mostly voice actors, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sports an even mix of talented voices and skilled live-action actors. While this strategy has proven disastrous for many games in the past, every member of Fallen Order’s cast carried their role with dignity and gravitas. And when Respawn announced a sequel, the voice director knew they had a good thing going for them and kept most of the actors who brought Fallen Order to life. As for the voices of new characters of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, they fit right in.

The 2023 Sundance Film Festival once again returned to Park City, Utah in-person, but it also had an online program that hosted the majority of its film slate. However, some titles, such as Celine Song’s Past Lives and John Carney’s Flora and Son, only played for in-person attendants. Showbiz Cheat Sheet only covered Sundance remotely for 2023, but here are the 10 films we saw that stood above the rest.

2023 Sundance Film Festival: Early highlights include ‘Fairyland,’ ‘Magazine Dreams,’ ‘Past Lives’ …
The first week of the Sundance Film Festival is drawing mixed-to-positive reactions, but several performers have garnered unanimous praise. Jonathan Majors made a big splash in Elijah Bynum’s “Magazine Dreams.” He stars as Killian Maddox, an obsessive bodybuilder who takes care of his Vietnam vet grandfather (Harrison Page) and pursues a relationship with a store clerk (Hayley Bennett) while trying to become a celebrity. The film, which is being compared to Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver,” looked noteworthy heading into the festival and is reportedly just as intense as early buzz had promised. Even critics who have expressed skepticism regarding the film’s third act are in awe of Majors’ committed work.
Kate Erbland of IndieWire writes, “As mistakes and missteps and pain continues to pile on to Killian, Majors turns an already wonderfully empathetic and deeply touching performance into something much more brutal, something explosive, something truly shocking.

Plot: After his wife dies tragically, Steve (Scoot McNairy) uproots his young daughter, Alysia, and moves to San Francisco, where he begins to explore his repressed homosexuality amid the growing gay rights movement of the 70s. Years later, in the 80s, as the AIDS crisis decimates the community, a now-grown Alysia (Emilia Jones) returns home to care for his dying father.
Review: Fairyland was one of the most ambitious movies to play this year’s Sundance Film Festival. While it’s a well-acted adaptation of the memoir by Alysia Abbott, it was the movie that made me notice how much the indie scene has changed. A decade or so ago, a star-driven historical drama based on a best-selling book would have gotten a healthy budget and perhaps backing from a mini-major such as Searchlight or Focus. In the new, micro-budget era, first-time director Andrew Durham has had to craft a...

In the new, micro-budget era, first-time director Andrew Durham has had to craft a...

Told from the perspective of a young girl raised by her single gay father to be a woman who is “strong and tolerant and not afraid of this world,” Fairyland reveals the intensely personal nature of its origins in Alysia Abbott’s 2013 memoir at every step of the characters’ complicated evolution together. Like that sometimes strained relationship, this debut feature from photographer Andrew Durham often feels stuck, but eventually reaches its destination with clear-eyed compassion and an emotionally powerful reconciliation. Those qualities are captured with enormous sensitivity in the lead performances of Emilia Jones and Scoot McNairy.
With a producing team led by Sofia Coppola for American Zoetrope, this is a bittersweet drama about unconventional parenting and alternative families that will resonate loudest with LGBTQ audiences. But its surge of final-act feeling will speak to any audience that has ever experienced the startling reckoning that comes with grief.

Andrew Durham makes his directorial feature debut at the Sundance Film Festival with an adaptation of Alysia Abbott’s remarkably intimate memoir, Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father, shortening the title to just Fairyland. The story spans from her childhood to adulthood, capturing a longitudinal look into her relationship with her father in a city that became home. Fairyland is emotionally moving, but Durham’s screenplay trips a bit on bringing the source material to the silver screen.

Accepting an award at the 2023 Creative Coalition Spotlight Initiative Gala, Adam Lambert described the version of the entertainment industry he was ushered into post-American Idol as the “Wild West,” a space in which there was so little room made for LGBTQ artists and creators that his own existence in it was all the more weighted. Inspired, rather than crushed, under the weight of responsibility, the musician made a vow to “be as gay as I fucking can be, and be flamboyant and be wild.”

Stories about the gay heyday of 1970s San Francisco — and the cruel chaser of the AIDS crisis the following decade — often hang on the notion of chosen family within the queer community: the bonds formed when blood ties are severed by prejudice. Studies of biological family, and parenthood especially, in that context are more unusual, which is what makes Alysia Abbott’s book “Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father” so moving. An account of her upbringing by a gay single father amid the LGBTQ liberation movement, and her subsequent nursing of him through AIDS, it balances an eager child’s-eye acceptance of counterculture living with an older woman’s melancholy over things unsaid or misspoken. In “Fairyland,” Andrew Durham adapts her story with warmth and sensitivity, though those perspectives are more fluently bridged on the page than on the screen.

Scoot McNairy is going to break your heart in Andrew Durham’s debut feature “Fairyland,” produced by Sofia Coppola and adapted from Alysia Abbott’s “Fairyland: A Memoir of My Father.” McNairy stars as Steve Abbott, a writer and widower who packs up his battered red Volkswagen bug and moves his young daughter Alysia (Nessa Dougherty) to San Francisco in the 1970s after the tragic death of his wife in a car accident.
In San Francisco, Steve can pursue his writing career and a queer lifestyle, all while providing Alysia with a free-wheeling, bohemian and highly independent childhood, one that is creative, honest and lived without shame, in a setting that’s more glam-rock than Summer of Love. However, like most kids and young adults, it will take years for Alysia to come to terms with the unique benefits of growing up in such an unconventional manner.

Emilia Jones earned a lot of attention as the star of 2021’s big Sundance winner and eventual Best Picture Oscar winner Coda, and the praise should be continuing this year as she not only stars in Cat People but also Fairyland, which had its world premiere in Park City on Friday.
Sofia Coppola serves as lead producer for this American Zoetrope production of Andrew Durham’s feature film writing and directing debut, and it is a memorable one that is unlikely to leave a dry eye in the house. When James Gunn first brought the Guardians of the Galaxy to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was only a matter of time before the character of Adam Warlock was brought into the fold. The character was supposed to appear in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2," but those plans, fortunately, fell through, paving the way for Will Poulter to age into the correct range to play the character. Fans have speculated the eventual Adam Warlock for years, with plenty fancasting predictions to show for it.
The comics have portrayed Adam Warlock as an otherworldly specimen of masculine perfection, as his artificial genetic structure has given him denser bone and muscle tissue, superhuman abilities, cosmic awareness, and dashing good looks. He's a hunky slice of fried gold, which is probably why fans focused heavily on fantasy booking him with Hollywood A-listers.

Zachary Quinto won the Critics Choice Award and Gold Derby Award for playing Dr. Oliver Thredson, aka Bloody Face, during “American Horror Story: Asylum” (2012-13). His spooky performance of a 1960s psychiatrist-turned-serial killer also earned him his first Emmy nomination as Best Limited/Movie Supporting Actor, though he lost to his co-star James Cromwell. Nine years later, Zachary Quinto returns at long last to FX’s anthology series in the upcoming 11th season, titled “American Horror Story: New York City.”
As of this writing, little is known about Quinto’s role in “AHS: NYC,” though IMDb lists his character’s name as “Sam.” It’ll actually be his third character on the series, as he first appeared as a guest star during the first season, “American Horror Story: Murder House,” as a gay homeowner named Chad Warwick who was murdered by Rubber Man and became a ghost. FX’s long-running horror anthology “American Horror Story” is such a megahit that in 2021, a spin-off series streamed on Hulu titled “American Horror Stories.” Unlike the parent show, “Stories” offers up different plots and cast members each and every week (think “Black Mirror” only with ghosts and zombies). Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, the program has received two Emmy nominations. The second edition of “Stories” premiered July 21, 2022 on Hulu and streams one episode per week throughout the summer.
In addition to dozens of fresh cast members, several recognizable “AHS” alumni appear in the new episodes, including Denis O’Hare, Gabourey Sidibe, Max Greenfield, Cody Fern, Seth Gabel, Nico Greetham and Teddy Sears. A war between faith and science determines the fate of an infected village in a gross episode that doesn’t have as much to say as it thinks.
“Love doesn’t heal, Celeste, only science can do that.”
Both American Horror Stories and American Horror Story proper have tackled endless subject matter that has explored the entire world across multiple time periods. However, 1750s New England during the height of the smallpox outbreak is new territory for the anthology series. There’s a tremendous amount of merit in telling an 18th century plague story, both in terms of the era’s blunt visuals, but also with how it can hold a mirror up to society’s own fragility during the past few years. “Milkmaids” begins as the episode from this season of American Horror Stories with the most potential, but ultimately it’s an entry full of disappointing decisions that...

All 22,000 plus voting members of the TV academy have until June 27 to cast their 2022 Emmy Awards nominations ballots for programs. Unlike the Oscars, voters for the Emmys do not rank their choices and nominees are determined by a simple tally. In the past, voters were limited in the number of programs that they could put forth. Five years ago, that cap (which was usually 10 per category) was lifted.
While the comedy and drama series ballots have each maintained an average of over 100 entrants in recent years, there have nearly always been fewer than 40 choices in the limited series genre. This year, however, the field is much larger at 61, which is up by 24 from last year. There were 41 contenders in 2020, 35 in 2019, and 33 in 2018. Five series from the list below will make the cut and be announced as Emmy nominees on July 12.

In this de facto, if far from de jure, latest iteration of the Ted franchise, Mark Wahlberg once again forms a strange, almost inexplicable bond with a supernatural creature who tests him in a number of painful, problematic ways. However – surprise! – instead of a stuffed teddy bear that’s come to life, this time the agent of chaos is God himself, that omnipresent, omniscient, all-powerful scamp. God first makes the life of Wahlberg’s Stuart Long hard by taking away his little brother via a sudden death when they are little kids, and then giving him a nature that gets him into trouble throughout his life, keeping him from finding a vocation until he finally Finds a Vocation, ie the desire to become a priest.

The following contains spoilers from the season 10 finale of American Horror Story: Double Feature aka American Horror Story: Death Valley, ep. “The Future Perfect”
Never accuse Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk of jumping the shark.
American Horror Story wrapped up ten seasons running tonight with Sarah Paulson’s Mamie Eisenhower getting her head blown up. Like, a full on bloody splat. I can’t remember an AHS where I laughed so hard.
In a unique season that began with a family’s transformation into vampires in Provincetown, Massachusetts (Red Tide) which then handed off to a completely different second story, Death Valley, which was a celebration of 1950s B sci-fi films, as well as Alien, They Live, V and I swear, a wink at Denis Sanders’ Invasion of the Bee Girls, AHS Season 10 continued to reinvent itself, showing no signs of grey, rather knee-slapping hysteria laced with groovy retro style.
