It is possible to be “scared of nothin’ and … scared to death” at the same, at least so says Luke Combs, who holds his own bellowing about the virtues of the Sooner State over a torrent of wind and rain in the video for his new song, “Ain’t No Love in Oklahoma.” The song comes off the upcoming soundtrack to Twisters, the 28-years-late sequel to Twister (and grammarians will note that Combs’ double-negative suggests there is love in Oklahoma, even if it’s a North Carolinian turned Nashvillian singing his heart out.

Set in a sleepaway stage-training program for shy kids and incorrigible natural hams, where attendees get intensive instruction from Broadway burnouts, “Theater Camp” is that rare parody that has viewers laughing from the opening scene till the credits roll. I’m talking about the 18-minute short film that Noah Galvin, Molly Gordon, Nick Lieberman and Ben Platt uploaded to YouTube a month or so into the pandemic, earning a cult following among musical theater geeks and those who survived comparable drama camps in upstate New York.
The feature version is more of the same, minus the laughs.
Truth be told, this new “Theater Camp” probably contains just as many laughs, except that now, nearly all of them are packed into the final half-hour of a gets-old-fast feature in which co-directors Gordon and Lieberman hammer the same joke ad nauseam. The driving concept behind “Theater Camp” — which sold to Searchlight for...

Searchlight Pitures has won a fierce bidding war for one of the buzziest Sundance crowd-pleasers. The Disney-owned distributor has closed a worldwide rights deal for the well-reviewed and well-received “Theater Camp,” with distribution rights going for around 8 million, according to an insider with knowledge of the deal.
The feature adaptation of Nick Lieberman’s 2020 short film of the same name will receive a theatrical release. It premiered in the dramatic competition on Saturday afternoon at the Eccles Theater in Park City and received a standing ovation.
The mockumentary stars comedic ensemble Gordon, Ben Platt (“Pitch Perfect”), Noah Galvin (“Booksmart”), Jimmy Tatro (“American Vandal”), Patti Harrison (“Together Together”), and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”). Penned by Galvin, Gordon, Lieberman and Platt, and based on their short film, the film was produced by Will Ferrell, Galvin, Gordon, Lieberman, Platt, Erik Feig, Samie Kim Falvey, Julia Hammer, Ryan Heller, Maria Zuckerman, and Jessica Elbaum.

Stars: Nicolas Cage, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Noah Le Gros, Kerry Knuppe, Shiloh Fernandez, Nick Searcy, Abraham Benrubi, Clint Howard | Written by Carl W. Lucas | Directed by Brett Donowho
Incredible as it may seem, this is Nicolas Cage’s first western, although he clearly enjoyed shooting it, because he’s already done another one (Butcher’s Crossing). Essentially a knock-off version of True Grit, The Old Way isn’t especially overwhelming in terms of plot and direction, but it’s eminently watchable all the same, thanks to strong onscreen chemistry between Cage and young co-star Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The film begins with a prologue sequence, in which grizzled gun-for-hire Colton Briggs shoots and kills almost everyone during an attempted hanging, including the man he was supposed to be rescuing in the first place. Twenty years later, Briggs (now sadly sans moustache) has hung up his guns in favour of raising his young...

Composer Siddhartha Khosla landed three Emmy nominations, this year, including one for original main title theme for “Only Murders in the Building.”
The catchy earworm, Khosla says, happened with ease. “I got on my piano, and just sang it over.”
The quirky, emotional tune is backed by Khosla’s humming and upside-down buckets, which are used as drums. Says Khosla, “That begins the piece, and they’re the driving momentum.”
The drummer is James McAlister, who plays with Sufjan Stevens and the National. “I called James and asked if it would be weird to put Home Depot buckets on this piece of music,” Khosla adds. “He went out and bought five buckets to create a drum set. He put microphones on top and it looked like he was a street musician.” The theme music was the perfect love letter to New York City. Barely running at under a minute, the...

The short drum solo that opens the captivating main title theme from the Hulu comedy “Only Murders in the Building” might sound innocuous enough to an untrained listener. But as composer Siddhartha Khosla explains in an exclusive video interview with Gold Derby, the specific sound of that beat – captured by playing plastic buckets purchased from Home Depot – ties the music to the show itself and its central location, a pre-war building in New York City’s Upper West Side.
“The idea was, how do we bring about the majesty of this pre-war building and the history of it in the score, but also juxtapose it with something modern – because New York is filled with all of these sorts of these dichotomies,” Khosla explains. “You can have somebody who lives in this building who is so wealthy… and then you can walk down the street, and there can be somebody on...

Sufjan Stevens meets TikTok in the video for his new song “Video Game,” starring the “Renegade” dance creator Jalaiah Harmon. In the visual, directed by Nicole Ginelli, Harmon dances her signature “Renegade” moves in front of a changing CGI backdrop.
“I don’t wanna be your personal Jesus/I don’t wanna live inside of that flame,” Stevens sings repeatedly in the background. “In a way I wanna be my own believer/I don’t wanna play your video game.”
“Video Game” will be featured on Stevens’ upcoming album The Ascension,...

Sufjan Stevens has released a sprawling new song, “America,” aptly in time for the country’s birthday weekend. The 12-minute track is the lead single to his upcoming album, The Ascension, which will arrive on September 25th via Asthmatic Kitty.
“America” opens in a swirl of electronics and harmonized, processed voices, with Stevens pleading on the chorus, “Don’t do to me what you did to America.” The arrangement, which recalls the symphonic-sized electronic barrage of 2010’s The Age of Adz, builds with twists and turns, adding live drums, synths and gusts of ambient sound.

Sufjan Stevens has announced a new solo album, The Ascension, his first since 2015’s Carrie and Lowell. The LP is due out September 25th and follows on the heels of Aporia, an ambient record Stevens made with his stepfather and Asthmatic Kitty co-founder Lowell Brams that was released earlier this year.
The first single from the new album, “America,” isn’t out until July 3rd, but you can view the album art and the full tracklist below, which looks as though it features a few references to other artists: “Run Away With Me...

Sufjan Stevens and his stepfather Lowell Brams have released another teaser track from their upcoming instrumental album Aporia.
The LP was inspired by Enya and other new-age music, and you can definitely hear it on this newest song, “Climb That Mountain,” a peaceful three-minute tune that could soundtrack a steady climb up a hillside.
Aporia is due out on March 27th via Stevens’ label Asthmatic Kitty. The duo previously shared the track “The Runaround” along with a music video featuring the Bike Life riders. Stevens and Brams previously collaborated on...

Sufjan Stevens and his stepfather Lowell Brams (yes, of Carrie and Lowell fame) have collaborated on a new album called Aporia, out March 27th via Asthmatic Kitty. On Wednesday, the pair shared their latest track from the album, “The Runaround.”
The New Age-y, semi-instrumental track comes with a music video featuring slow-motion footage of Bike Life riders, cruising and popping wheelies on ATVs and dirt bikes. It’s not the most conventional activity to be soundtracked by Sufjan Stevens, but the video looks great nonetheless.

Sufjan Stevens and his long-time collaborator/stepfather, Lowell Brams, unveiled a new song, “The Unlimited,” from their upcoming New Age-inspired album, Aporia, out March 27th via their label Asthmatic Kitty.
“The Unlimited” finds Stevens and Brams crafting an enthralling soundscape that keeps a serene synth at its core while still venturing into murkier, more ominous spaces. With the introduction of thumping drums halfway through, the song builds steadily to a euphoric peak before tapering into a peaceful echo.

Ahead of their eighth album I Am Easy To Find, The National have released a new track “Light Years.” The delicate, emotional song goes heavy on the piano as frontman Matt Berninger croons with a palpable ache.
The band also revealed a video for the track, which pulls scenes from their upcoming short film I Am Easy To Find, directed by Mike Mills. The film, which will also be released alongside the album, stars Academy Award-winner Alicia Vikander and is a visual companion to the new music.
