Any competition must have rules, and American Idol is no exception. From the time contestants audition all the way to the season finale, they must agree to and adhere to a set of rules in order to keep things fair and avoid controversy (although American Idol has had its share of controversies over the years). A handful of contestants have been disqualified in the past for breaking these rules. Here are some examples.
Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, Katy Perry, and Iam Tongi on ‘American Idol’ | Eric McCandless/ABC ‘American Idol’ contestants must be within the age limits
The minimum and maximum age requirements on American Idol have changed over the years. Idol used to be open to anyone between the ages of 16 and 24. Then, the age range opened up, so anyone between 15 and 28 years old could audition.
This is a strict rule on American Idol, so anyone caught lying about their age will be disqualified,...

Though 10 former "American Idol" contestants who are African-American are trying to sue the show for $25 million, minimum, a piece, Season 11 finalist Jermaine Jones doesn't think they're going to get very far. In a new interview, he calls the former contestants' attempts to justify "Idol's" alleged racism "ludicrous."
"I think they are going a little overboard," he tells The Hollywood Reporter. "Some of these cases are over 10 years old. What have you been doing since the show that you feel you deserve $25 million?"
The lawsuit alleges that the producers of the hit Fox reality show are conducting a "cruel and inhumane plot" that dredges up old arrest information to make the African-American contestants look like "violent criminals, liars and sexual deviants." Those involved in the case are Corey Clark (Season 2), Jaered Andrews (Season 2), Jacob John Smalley (Season 2), Donnie Williams (Season 3), Terrell Brittenum (Season 5), Derrell Brittenum (Season 5), Thomas Daniels (Season 6), Akron Watson...

Ten African-American former American Idol contestants are suing the show, claiming racial discrimination. Each of the contestants is seeking $25 million in damages, alleging they were treated unfairly both onscreen and off because of their race. Corey Clark, Jaered Andrews, Jacob John Smalley, Donnie Williams, Thomas Daniels, Akron Watson, Ju’Not Joyner, Chris Golightly, and Terrell and Derrell Brittenum say in their suit that Idol goes out of its way to question black contestants about arrest records and background information, a pattern the claimants say paints them as “violent criminals, liars, and sexual deviants.” It’s probably worth noting here ...

Ten former "American Idol" contestants from various seasons, all of whom happen to be African-American, have filed a lawsuit against the Fox reality show claiming they were unjustly kicked off the show because of their race.
The contestants are accusing the producers of conducting a "cruel and inhumane" plot to exploit their lives for ratings by illegally researching their arrest records and using the histories to embarrass them on national television, TMZ reports.
The contestants involved are Corey Clark (Season 2), Jaered Andrews (Season 2), Jacob John Smalley (Season 2), Donnie Williams (Season 3), Terrell Brittenum (Season 5), Derrell Brittenum (Season 5), Thomas Daniels (Season 6), Akron Watson (Season 6), Ju'Not Joyner (Season 8) and Chris Golightly (Season 9).
The lawyer representing the contestants in the suit claims the show used the arrest info to make his clients out to be "violent criminals, liars and sexual deviants" when, in fact, none had ever been convicted of the charges stemming from their arrests.

American Idol clearly gives the boot to contestants for lacking the right vocal chops. But did the show ax several former hopefuls because they were black? That's what nine erstwhile Idol hopefuls are claiming in a complaint filed against the show alleging that racism played a role in their ouster in an attempt to juice up ratings. Nine black, former "American Idol" contestants have reportedly accused the Fox series of racism and are planning to sue.
TMZ obtained a letter submitted to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission by New York attorney James Freeman, requesting permission to sue Fox and the show on behalf of his nine clients. In the letter, Freeman claims there is a racist pattern in the "Idol" disqualification process.
Freeman alleges that only nine "Idol" contestants had been publicly disqualified since the show debuted in 2002, and all happened to be black. He claims the show enacted a "cruel and inhumane" scheme, which included background checks and arrest inquiries, to humiliate the contestants on live TV and perpetuate "destructive stereotypes" that made his clients appear to be "violent criminals, liars and sexual deviants."
Nigel Lythgoe, producer of "American Idol," told TMZ he was "shocked" by the "ridiculous" allegations.

Jermaine Jones is apparently out on "American Idol."
The 25-year-old vocal instructor from Pine Hill, N.J., tweeted Tuesday night that he no longer would be on the Fox singing contest.
The Hollywood Reporter said Jones tweeted, "Awww I will no longer b on the show." His Twitter account has since been deleted.
A Fox spokeswoman declined to comment on the matter or confirm his tweet.
TMZ reports Jones will be kicked off during the Wed., March 14 broadcast. He allegedly hid a criminal record -- an incident involved violence -- from producers who then confronted Jones on camera. Jones reportedly has outstanding warrants.

Ian Benardo, whose audition for American Idol in 2007 was cut short when when it became obvious he had no talent whatsoever, has been spending his effort trying to get a settlement from the show. Benardo claims that American Idol producers told him to “gay it up for the cameras,” which he says he finds offensive now, but apparently he was all for it at the time when he thought he still had a chance at being on the show.
Benardo’s first suit was for $300 million (yes, really). When that failed, he sued again for only $100 million (bargain!). Now that the second suit has been thrown out of court, he’s going back a third time… and only suing for $5 million.

To the delight of hair metal fans everywhere, this year’s American Idol final 12 reunited on stage last night alongside rock God, Alice Cooper.
Crystal Bowersox, Siobhan Magnus, Didi Benami, Paige Miles, Michael Lynche, Casey James, Tim Urban, Lee Dewyze, Lacey Brown, Andrew Garcia, Aaron Kelly and Katie Stevens gave a fiery rendition of Cooper’s 1972 hit ‘School’s Out’, resplendent in St Trinian type school uniforms and accompanied by a heavily made up children’s choir.
The group and Alice were later joined on stage by Orianthi, who kept her costume in theme and wore a sparkly school dress.
We don’t know who lost more credibility last night. American Idol for allowing decent yet intrinsically uninteresting singer Lee DeWyze to win, or Alice Cooper, who used to be a rock God but these days is looking like a bit of a sell out more and more. Leave your comments below.

Well not himself of course!! American Idol star Chris Daughtry’s wife Deanna is the one who is actually pregnant and he has announced that they are expecting twins this November.
“Deanna and I are overjoyed about this double blessing,” he wrote on his official website.
“Thank you for your expressions of love and support and for respecting for our privacy during this special time.”
The singer — who went from coming fourth on season five of Idol to fronting his own massively successful band, Daughtry — also revealed that getting pregnant hadn’t been easy for he and Deanna.
“Due to Deanna’s partial hysterectomy in 2006, the couple used IVF and had their embryos transferred to a gestational surrogate,” said a statement on the site.
The pair, who married in 2001, have two other children. Hannah, 13 from his wife’s first marriage, and an adopted son, Griffin, 11. Chris was recently named American Idol...

Former boxing champion Chris Eubank has reportedly begged Simon Cowell for a judging role on this year’s X Factor series.
The 43 year old lisping star is said to be desperate to stand in for Dannii Minogue while she is on maternity leave and insisted that he would be a tough and straight talking judge.
He told the Daily Star: “I think I am the best person for the job.
“I was mates with Louis and Simon in the 90s so who else can you imagine doing it other than me?”
The newspaper reports that Michael Buble, Shirley Bassey, Pink and Mel B are currently being considered for the panel and Ronan Keating revealed that he was offered a spot.
He admitted: “Yes. I was offered that. But I can’t do it.”
Most likely because he’ll be busy judging on the Australian version of the show.

There's more to Tim Urban than lustrous locks and a big, goofy grin. The American Idol season 9 finalist stopped by Idolatry yesterday to discuss the highs and lows of his seventh-place run. Among the topics we covered: Why he was happy that he "snuck in" to the semifinals after Chris Golightly's last-minute Dq; what went wrong with his initial live performance (a cover of OneRepublic's "Apologize"); and how Elvis Week turned out to be his shining moment on the show. Tim also dished on why he didn't let tough critiques from Kara and Randy get him down, and...

"Teflon" Tim Urban, so named because he kept bouncing out of the bottom three on the ninth season of "American Idol," finally had the vote stick when he was ousted during "Idol Gives Back" on Wednesday night. In fact, Tim originally didn't make it into the Top 24, but when Chris Golightly was disqualified, Tim filled his slot -- and lasted much longer than predicted. He made it all the way to the Top 7. "It is not about how far you make it. It is about having the courage to go take that step [and audition]," Tim tells "The Insider." "Know that 108,000 people audition and only 10 people go on tour." The 20-year-old -- who will turn 21 on May 1 -- says that "American Idol" "has been the craziest roller-coaster journey I could ever imagine, but one of the best experiences of my life. I have learned so much about the industry, I am thinking of writing a book.

Outgoing American Idol contestant Tim Urban has admitted that he’d like to forge an acting career for himself, as well as launching a successful music career.
Tim was eliminated from the singing show last Wednesday during the charity special Idol Gives Back. In an interview with Billboard he was asked if he would take his fans advice and try out for a role on the hit Fox musical comedy Glee. Tim responded:
You know, I would love to do music. I’m hoping that that door opens up, but I also have always had a desire to act and be in that side of the entertainment industry as well. So I would be really excited if I got the opportunity to do that. I’m just waiting to see what happens, but I’m open to any of that at this point. I’m really just excited about the whole thing.

Outgoing American Idol contestant Tim Urban has admitted that he knew he would polarize people during his time on the show.
Tim was originally left out of the Idol lineup and only made it back into the final 24 after Chris Golightly was dropped due to contractual difficulties.
During his time on the show, the Jonas Brothers lookalike built up an enthusiastic army of fans but also some very vocal haters who took to internet forums and boards to criticise his every performance. On the huge reaction he received on Idol, Tim told USA Today:
It got really ugly. I tried to avoid that. I had some of my relatives, my cousins, out there defending me, so that was kind of funny. I realized that people were going to talk.
I also found out really early in the show that I was going to be this polarizing contestant on the show.

Tim Urban has admitted that he had a tough time during the first few weeks of American Idol.
The 20 year old Texan singer was eliminated from the show last night but should not have been in the final 24 at all. He only made it onto the live shows after original finalist Chris Golightly was dropped due to contractual reasons. Tim’s first few performances were criticised heavily by the judges and on more than one occasion, Simon Cowell blasted him saying that he didn’t deserve to be on the Idol stage.
In an interview with USA Today Tim spoke about his early Idol days saying:
Those first few weeks were not good for me. Actually, most of the weeks were not that good for me, as far as judges’ comments, if we’re going to be honest. They were not on the Tim Urban bandwagon from the get-go. Every week,...

On last night’s Idol Gives Back, the American Idol final 12 reunited once again and gave a rendition of “Keeping the Dream Alive” by German pop group Münchener Freiheit.
They were all dressed in white costumes and the song was so obviously lip-synched that it was beyond tacky. At least it was more understated than usual and one positive was that they gave the rightful “solo” to Crystal Bowersox, the series front runner. Did you love it or hate it? Tim Urban has been the latest contestant to be eliminated from American Idol.
On Tuesday night’s ‘Inspirational Songs’ themed show, Tim gave his rendition of Better Days by The Goo Goo Dolls. Simon Cowell said the performance was ‘a little bit of a let down,’ while Kara DioGuardi added ‘it wasn’t your best performance.’
The American public agreed and last night the 20 year old Texan found himself in the bottom three alongside Casey James and Aaron Kelly….eventually Ryan Seacrest announced that it would be Teflon Tim leaving the show.
On hearing the news Tim said:
“I know this has completely changed my life and I take away so many things from it I couldn’t even begin to tell you.”

Tim Urban's charming smile can no longer help him to stay on "American Idol". The aspiring singer who is dubbed Teflon Tim for his good looks and mediocre voice, finally got voted off this week when his version of Goo Goo Dolls' "Better Days" failed to inspire.
On the performance night, Randy Jackson said that his performance was just Ok. Ellen DeGeneres compared Tim's performance to soup of the day, sometimes you like it sometimes you don't , and last night, she didn't like it. Kara DioGuardi said it was not his best performance while Simon Cowell thought it was an improvement although it was "a bit of a let down".
Despite being sent home, Tim kept his smile and described how wonderful the opportunity he has been given. Tim was the last minute pick of Top 24 when one of the contestants, Chris Golightly, was disqualified.

Country supergroup Lady Antebellum have recorded their performance for an upcoming American Idol results show.
The award winning band, consisting of Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott, came along to last night’s Elvis themed show and pre-recorded a live performance of their smash hit “Need You Now.” We can only imagine that bosses are planning a country themed week some time soon!
Lady Antebellum was awarded the Top New Duo or Group in 2009 by the Academy of Country Music and New Artist of the Year in 2008 by the Country Music Association. They were nominated two Grammy Awards at the 52nd Grammy Awards; of these nominations, they took home the award for Best Country Performance by Duo or Group with Vocals for “I Run to You.” More recently in November 2009, the band was awarded Single of the Year (“I Run to You”) and Vocal Group of the Year by the Country Music Association.

American Idol contestant Tim Urban may have stripped for a talent competition last July, but the Jonas Brother lookalike has insisted that he won’t be doing the same in this year’s Idol.
Last summer Urban entered a competition organised by Actors, Models & Talent for Christ (or Amtc) and as part of the contest he had to sing, model and act. One round even required him to walk down a runway in just his swimsuit! Vote For The Worst website then used the pictures of this event as part of their ‘evil plan,’ to get him more votes and propel him further in his Idol run.
Speaking about the competition, Urban told MTV:
“I was involved in a competition — it was for acting, modeling and singing,” Urban explained. “One of the competitions was a swimsuit competition. And, obviously, I entered a swimsuit competition and obviously there are photos from that.

With his model good looks and decent (not brilliant) singing voice, Tim Urban looked like a real contender on American Idol. Until last night. He chose to give a rendition of Queen’s Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Video of Tim’s performance is at the end of this post.
Unfortunately, that rendition was ultimately lacking in excitement, and Simon Cowell correctly accused Tim of having stopped competing weeks ago. It was a suicidal song choice for Tim. If Paige Miles doing Mariah Carey was punching above her weight vocally-speaking, Tim trying to do Freddie Mercury was always going to be a disaster. In fact, I can’t help wonder if this recent sacrilege of Queen songs – Todrick Hall a few weeks back, Tim last night and the dreaded Jedward – might prompt Freddie to reawaken and sort out these pathetic pretenders. Even a zombie Freddie would be preferable to second-rate singers murdering his music.

It seems that Usher will be the first celebrity mentor on this year’s American Idol season.
The R&B’s star’s website has announced that he will be appearing on both Tuesday 30th March and Wednesday 31st March 2010. These dates would imply that Usher will mentoring on Tuesday and performing on Wednesday night’s results show.
His appearance will coincide with the release of his newest album “Raymond v Raymond,” which hits stores on March 30.
So what theme will the bosses impose on contestants next week then? An R&B week would be cool, or maybe producers will choose a Broadway theme given that Usher has previously starred as Billy Flynn in “Chicago.” No doubt more details will be revealed next week but until then, feel free to leave our suggestions and opinions below!

Forget everything we've heard up until now. On Tuesday night (March 16), the top 12 finalists will step out onto the new and improved "American Idol" thunder dome stage to try to make us fall in love all over again. Some will try to make us forget about last week's surprise eliminations, while others will dig deep to cement their status as the ones to beat this year.
And they'll do it all while singing the songs of the Rolling Stones. It's a tall order and a few singers, such as teens Katie Stevens and Aaron Kelly, not to mention the seemingly on-the-bubble Paige Miles and Tim Urban, who will seriously have to step up their game.
So what do the top 12 need to do to win the hearts — and ears — of the nation?...

Tim Urban looked more shocked than we were that he made this year’s American idol final 12. In the video clip above, he talks about his joy to have made it so far and also talks about possible future themes.
While he is happy to be going with a Rolling Stones song next week, the Jonas Brother lookalike admitted that he would ideally like to sing ‘big band and swing music.’
He said:
‘Not a lot of people know this, but it would be a lot of fun to sing some big band swing music on the show. I love that style of music though it doesn’t really work with the guitar. It would definitely be an upbeat number.’

This year’s Top 12 “American Idol” finalists have struck it lucky and will be singing Rolling Stones songs for their first large scale live show.
EW is reporting that during a break in Wednesday night’s live show, Ryan Seacrest taped a promo in which he revealed the theme for next week’s show.
We are so hoping that one (or all) of the Stones will turn up to mentor the contestants and maybe even perform one of their rocking tunes and you imagine an American Idol group version of (‘I can’t get no) Satisfaction’?
Do you have any song suggestions? Can you see Todrick Hall singing ‘Paint It Black’? As always leave your comments below.

Tim Urban was the late addition to this year’s American Idol group and last week Simon Cowell told him that he regretted putting him in there.
However Tim’s rendition of Matt Nathanson’s “Come On Get Higher” impressed Cowell greatly last night, though we still don’t see what all the fuss is about. We thought his performance was pitchy and weak, but hey, who are we to judge!
Ellen DeGeneres loved how he used the stage, but thought the song was forgettable, Kara DioGuardi really liked it and said that he’s consistent, which she appreciates, however she added: “You look the part and you play the part, but it’s not all there yet.”
Randy Jackson said that he didn’t really get it andthat Tim’s performance was “very karaoke” because it had “nothing special, nothing jumped out and it wasn’t unique”.

There was a time when grace and dignity ruled the land. When disappointed singers whose "journey" ended on "American Idol" in the first few semi-final rounds shed a crocodile tear (or 20), got their obligatory fake hug from host Ryan Seacrest, sang their most recent karaoke number again (invariably just a bit less terribly than the night or two before) and then shuffled off this mortal coil never to be heard from again.
But on Thursday (February 25) night's first elimination show of season nine, a strange thing happened: The four men and women who got the boot didn't open the fake water works and just go away. They went away mad. Like a mistake had been made, or as if they deserved to be on the show no matter what those dumb 24 million voters thought!
The first boot-ee, Florida beach blonde Janell Wheeler, handled it best when she got the hook over teen Katie Stevens.

Looking so much like a Jonas Brother, Tim Urban should be the perfect American Idol candidate…..if only he could sing! Tim was a late addition to the final 24 contestants after Chris Golightly was disqualified and already Simon Cowell is regretting their decision to include him.
On last night’s live show Tim sang One Republic’s ‘Apologize’ and his nerves were so bad that he white knuckled the mic for his entire performance. He screamed the parts where he should have had a falsetto and went out of tune consitiently.
Simon harshly told him: “We absolutely made the right decision the first time around based on that performance. You may make it through because people feel sorry for you and you’re good looking.”
Do you agree? Leave your comments below.

After one of the roughest first rounds in "American Idol" memory, voters appeared to get it right with the initial four eliminations of season nine. Though a few of the shakiest competitors from the debut week of live performances lived to see another day — think Tim Urban and Katie Stevens — Thursday night (February 25) marked the end of the road for Janell Wheeler, Ashley Rodriguez, Joe Muñoz and Tyler Grady.
Thanks to 24 million votes, the first singers who passed into safety include a glammed-up Siobhan Magnus, cowgirl wannabe Haeley Vaughn, Michelle Delamor, Katelyn Epperly and Stevens. That left all-American Florida girl Janell Wheeler on the outs. "That sucks," she said, snapping her fingers. "I had a feeling ... definitely wrong song choice," she admitted of Heart's "What About Love," which the...

A week after his unexpected disqualification from "American Idol," Chris Golightly couldn't bring himself to watch the first live performance by the top 12 men on Wednesday night.
"All I can say is, that's why I should have been there," the dejected singer said when asked for a reaction to the drubbing handed out to Tim Urban, the Texas singer who replaced Golightly in the top 24. "I met Tim, he's wonderful, he's awesome as well, but we're two different people. That's my spot. [Simon Cowell] wouldn't have said that to me."
Golightly wasn't interested in trashing Urban, but instead said he still just wanted to give America a chance to see him shine on "Idol" after producers booted him over a previous contract. "That's where I belong," he said. "It was just taken.

The early semifinal rounds of "American Idol" are always difficult. You are bound to have some early hopefuls falling victim to first-time-on-tv jitters, a few dark horses soaring before an eventual crash and a handful of singers proving they were lucky to have gotten there in the first place.
But after the first two nights of mostly panned performances, veteran "Idol" watchers woke up Thursday (February 25) wondering, "Is this the worst top 24 ever?"
The answer is easy for Dave Della Terza, webmaster of the long-running "Idol"-bashing blog VoteForTheWorst.com, which encourages "Idol" watchers to purposely stuff the box with votes for the weakest contestants. "This truly is the worst top 24 in 'American Idol' history," Della Terza said. "If you notice, the only contestant in the entire top...

On Wednesday, February 25, it was the guys' turn to take the stage of "American Idol" and garner votes from it. Todrick Hall was the first to perform and he took a bold step to re-arrange Kelly Clarkson's "Since You've Been Gone" to an R & B. Simon Cowell said, "I thought it was a crazy arrangement of the song. What you did was completely murder the original song. You can boo all you want, but nobody would buy it. I think what you did was verging on stupid."
Aaron Kelly was next and he did what's he's best for, country music. Singing Rascal Flatts' "Here Comes Goodbye", Aaron got the compliment of being cute by both Simon and Kara Dioguardi. "You're a good singer. Very likable. Very cute, but you have to take control of the song. I think absolutely 100 you'll be here this week," Simon said.
