Earlier this month, Deadline kicked off its Hollywood Contraction series by checking in with the acting community to see whether opportunities have picked up since the end of the strikes.
The response wasn’t so positive. On top of fewer shows in the works and the disappearance of pilot season, the available acting gigs are paying less than they used to amid rising cost of living, making it hard for many working actors to afford their rent or mortgage and support their families.
So we went to the front lines to the people who would know best — casting directors– to ask about the contraction going on in the industry, and whether the fears are justified. Though just about everybody acknowledges that change is happening, they also remain optimistic about the future.

Together Films Acquires Worldwide Rights to SXSW Documentary ‘An Army of Women’ – Film News in Brief
Together Films has acquired the worldwide rights to “An Army of Women,” which will have its world premiere at South by Southwest in March.
The feature documentary, directed by Julie Lunde Lillesæter, follows a group of women in Austin, Texas, who join together to help build a movement of plaintiffs legally challenging the system that allowed their rapists to walk free.
“We believe ‘An Army of Women’ presents a compelling opportunity for major streamers and buyers. This unprecedented story shows that through resilience and solidarity, the systems that fail us can be changed. Our hope is that this can be a catalyst for change for the rest of the US, and that global audiences will be left with the same optimism and fighting spirit that drives the women in our film,” Lillesæter said in a statement.

It’s wild that we don’t have more recognition for the art of casting. Casting directors have a guild with an Academy branch, but not their own Oscar category. While the work can often seem alchemical or opaque to outsiders, casting directors are really in the first line of storytellers who collaborate on a film; they have to see and expand on a director’s vision for the film’s world and find the actors who will embody what the filmmakers aim to create. So IndieWire is bringing back an old pre-pandemic feature to celebrate the storytelling work of casting.
We reached out to a number of the film industry’s top casting directors to ask them to nominate one outstanding work from this year. As it turns out, though, the casting directors we spoke to had lots of films with casting they loved this year. “Being asked to...

The Best Comedy Series Casting Emmy category is one where repeat wins should generally not be expected, since the only show to achieve that feat in well over a decade was “Veep” in 2016 and 2017. Most of Gold Derby’s participating users seem to have kept this in mind while making their 2023 Emmy picks, given that former casting winners “Ted Lasso” (2021) and “Abbott Elementary” (2022) are trailing new shows “The Bear” and “Jury Duty” in the current race. However, there is still no obvious consensus among them as to which freshman series will actually take the gold.
The final slot in this year’s comedy casting lineup is filled by “Only Murders in the Building,” which, like “Abbott Elementary,” was first recognized here last year. After 2000, 2007, and 2021, this is only the fourth time that every nominated show in this category consists of no more than three seasons. In addition to “Ted Lasso,...

Casting directors who came to celebrate their own at the 38th annual Artios Awards on Thursday had a message for actors who worry that making a self-tape means sending one’s work into the abyss: They do take the time to see your at-home audition.
Casting Society President Destiny Lilly told Deadline that she recognizes that some actors probably think those self-tapes that were made during the pandemic ended up in some massive, unopened pile of manila folders. And that couldn’t be anything further from the truth, she said.

The casting branch of the academy is only eight years old and doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society of America has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).
Nominees for feature films were announced on February 1 (the last day of Oscar nominations voting). Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed a virtual ceremony on March 17, which is the first day of final Oscar voting.
Last year’s big budget winners were the comedy “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and the drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7 ” while “The Forty-Year-Old Version” and “One Night in Miami” took the equivalent prizes in the independent division. “Minari” won the low budget and “The Surrogate” the micro budget prizes while “Soul” claimed the animation award.
