The stormtroopers of "Star Wars" are named for soldiers who fought for Imperial Germany during World War 1 — though the Galactic Empire they serve has a lot more in common with the German government of the Second World War.
Rather than the brown and green cloth uniforms the historical stormtroopers wore, those in "Star Wars" wear white polymer armor with face-concealing helmets. It's easier to make the costumes when you only need multiple copies of one design and in-universe, the uniformity reinforces the Empire as a military dictatorship.
The stormtroopers' look is one of the most well-remembered parts of "Star Wars" — it's up there with lightsabers, Darth Vader, and the Millennium Falcon. The prequel and sequel trilogies only touched up the designs for the stormtroopers and clone troopers, opting not to reinvent the wheel. It's not just the films where their influence reigns either; Jonathan "Jony" Ive, chief design officer at Apple,...

Since her debut in the 1986 animated "Transformers" movie, Arcee has been one of the most famous Autobots of all. The default girl Transformer, Arcee rocks a feminine pink-and-white color scheme and either a sports car or motorcycle vehicle mode. She's also had a bit of a rough history.
Arcee was considered for the 2007 "Transformers" film (check out concept art of her here), but like a few other characters, she was cut during development. Co-writer Roberto Orci explained the removal to IGN: "The idea of a female Transformer needs its own explanation, and there just wasn't going to be enough time."
The sequel, "Revenge of the Fallen," featured Arcee, but in one of its many faults, it didn't do much with her. Arcee is one of a trio of female motorcycle transformers; she's painted pink while her sisters are blue and purple (media differs on if the trio are separate...

On the creator-focused streaming service Nebula, it’s time to duel.
Duelist Mansion, a Yu-Gi-Oh!-inspired competition series hosted by Patch Lacey of TierZoo, is one of the seven programs that compose Nebula’s current slate of originals. The company’s forthcoming shows will arrive on its namesake subscription platform, where viewers pay $5 per month to access nerdy, educational, and gamified videos.
In a statement, Nebula CEO Dave Wiskus described the slate as a “dynamic” initiative that will include episodic series, game shows, standalone long-form pieces, a holiday special, and much more. Six of the seven originals are expected to premiere in 2023. The lone exception is Identiteaze, a short film helmed by creator Jessie Earl (a.k.a. Jessie Gender). The queer sci-fi project is due out in early 2024.

Of all the rude, crass, self-absorbed, ridiculous, inappropriate criminals on "Futurama" -- that is to say, most of the characters on the show -- none is more worthy of censure than Captain Zapp Brannigan (Billy West). Zapp works for Doop, an organization similar to the Federation from "Star Trek," but far more trigger-happy and willing to engage in resource theft. Zapp commands a massive warship called the Nimbus, although the craft is not half as big as Zapp's ego. Zapp is narcissistic, over-sexualized, vain, crude, uncaring, obsessed with velour, and endlessly abusive to his first officer Kif (Maurice Lamarche) whom he uses as a towel in the show's latest episode. West once said in an interview with Vanity Fair that Zapp Brannigan was what might have happened if William Shatner, the actor, was in charge of the starship Enterprise instead of Captain Kirk.

Anita Sarkeesian wants to talk about That Time When.
And by That Time When, we mean her new web series–an original production by creator-owned streaming service Nebula and Sarkeesian’s first show since her 2013-2017 YouTube series Tropes vs. Women in Video Games.
For those unfamiliar, Tropes vs. examined the prevalence of common tropes like the stereotypical damsel in distress in video games, and making it catapulted Sarkeesian into the spotlight as a central target of the misogynist Gamergate movement. Like other women in Gamergate’s crosshairs, Sarkeesian was swamped with rape and death threats, and understandably has been leery of returning to making videos on the internet at all, let alone on YouTube.
That’s why she decided to make them on Nebula instead, she says. Nebula is a 5-a-month streaming service founded in 2019 by creator network Standard. It hosts content from around 160 self-described “education-y” creators, including Lindsay Ellis,...

You may feel like you’re in a time loop these days watching television. From the porn world of HBO Max’s “Minx,” to the Paramount set of “The Offer,” and the Washington power struggles of “Gaslit,” it may be 2022 but onscreen, it is the 1970s. The three series above, alongside a section of Showtime’s upcoming anthology series “The First Lady,” all take place in the era of Gerald Ford, gas shortages, and snazzy fashions. If media reflects the culture, and vice versa, what is it about the 1970s that is speaking to right now?
There are two major elements at play: a desire to indulge in nostalgia and a response to current, perceived revolutionary changes in our society. It’s been a rough year so far. And that’s putting it lightly.
Not only has the world been devastated by the coronavirus, but now the murder of George Floyd has become the straw that broke the camel’s back in terms of folks finally being fed up with police brutality. Of course, Floyd was killed by asphyxia when officer Derek Chauvin held his knee on his neck for well over 8 minutes while arresting him in Minneapolis, despite Floyd telling him multiple times that he couldn’t breathe.
The incident has sparked nationwide protests and riots in nearly every major city in America, while many celebrities have taken to social media to make their voices heard as well. But some of them have been a bit misguided in their attempts. Like Hugh Jackman, for instance.

Neil deGrasse Tyson has become well known on social media for pointing out accuracies and inaccuracies in major Hollywood science-fiction movies, from Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” (quite accurate it turns out) to Alfonso Cuaron’s “Gravity” (quite far-fetched when it comes to science). Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” opened over four years ago, but Tyson finally got around to nit-picking one detail of the science-fiction drama this week (via ScreenRant). “Arrival” stars Amy Adams as a linguist who is hired to help decipher an alien language in the midst of an invasion. So much of the plot hinges on the aliens writing symbols and Adams’ character deciphering the meaning, but it’s here where Tyson found an error.
“In the film ‘Arrival’ (2016) nobody wondered whether the circular patterns drawn by the creature were backwards,” Tyson observed on Twitter. “The septopoid Alien drew them from the other side of a transparent glass wall.

The Roker household is officially a margarine-only home now, probably, judging by how Al Roker spent his Thanksgiving morning fighting off a man-sized stick of butter at the Macy’s Day Parade on Thursday.
The “feud” started with Roker approaching the man — dressed from head-to-toe as a stick of butter, complete with the word “butter” spelled out vertically across his body — and imploring him to get out of his shot. It seemed jovial enough.
“I hate to butter you up, but you’ve got to move on, okay? There you go,” Roker said, before playfully shoving the butter guy aside.
“Get out of here ya butter,” he said during another dust up. “I can’t believe it’s not butter!”

Ellis, 34 announced the venture -- titled Axiom’s End -- yesterday on Twitter. The book, published by St. Martin’s Press and currently available for preorder, is an alternate-history first contact adventure about a young woman who becomes the sole point of communication between humanity and a potentially hostile alien civilization. The book will officially hit shelves on July 21, 2020.
In a Tweet, Ellis hinted that the road to publishing Axiom’s End has been roughly a decade long, and said that her next video will chronicle that long haul. An audiobook will also eventually be available, Ellis says, through she won’t serve as its reader.

The “Cats” trailer dropped Thursday afternoon, and Twitter pounced. At the time of this writing, the movie was the top trending topic worldwide on Twitter with over 300,000 tweets. While that’s only a fraction of the record 50 million tweets that “Avengers: Endgame” accrued, it’s still an impressive initial response for a film based on a 38-year-old musical.
If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, the actors in Tom Hooper’s “Cats” all retain their human bodies and faces, but are covered in CGI fur and possess pointy ears and tails. Some viewers found the anthropomorphism unsettling, while others — like star Taylor Swift — were thrilled. Reacting to her transformation into a feline, the singer tweeted, “I am a cat now and somehow that was everything.”

In what marks a substantial accomplishment for the YouTube community at large, resident creator and media critic Lindsay Ellis has been nominated for a Hugo Award -- an awards franchise established in 1953 that marks one of the highest honors in the science fiction and fantasy space.
Ellis’ nomination comes in the 'Best Related Work' category and recognizes Hobbit Duology, a series of three videos that serve as a critique of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit film, painting it as a disappointing miscalculation in the wake of the much-beloved Lord Of The Rings trilogy, per Paste Magazine.

I’m still in shock. Who on earth would have believed that Disney would fire Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 director James Gunn? After all, the man took a bunch of D-list comic book characters and turned them into a billion dollar franchise and was on the cusp of shooting the hugely anticipated third installment.
His removal was reportedly the result of the filmmaker calling out Pizza-Gate conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec on Twitter. In revenge, Posobiec and white supremacist Mike Cernovich scoured Gunn’s Twitter history, found some dirt and began a campaign aimed at Disney designed to punish Gunn for disrespecting them and President Trump.
Needless to say, the studio bending over backwards to please fascist chuds hasn’t gone down particularly well on Twitter, with the internet reacting as so:

For the record, I actually loved Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy. I'll admit, it wasn't perfect and stretching the story out of the course of three films may not have been necessary, but I enjoyed it! I loved Peter Jackson's vision of Middle Earth and I am one of those fans that would gladly take everything I could get.
There was a lot of hype build up for this trilogy, but it seemed to fall flat with most audiences. There definitely seemed to be a lot of frustration with the adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkiens classic novel, which ended up weaving in several other story threads from other books and adding new characters, which I personally didn't have any issues with.
Anyway, whether you are a fan of The Hobbit trilogy or not, I have a fantastic video essay series for you to watch from Lindsay Ellis, who...

Lindsay Ellis tells it how it is with Bright by stating just what’s wrong with the lazy world-building that takes place within the Netflix movie. There’s just too much within the movie that should have come earlier in the movie but is put off for so long, and by the time it does come around we’re already too bored to really get into it. Plus, the whole idea of Ward being this kind of loner with a bad attitude is wasted by the fact that he has a family he cares about. The whole idea of a cop that’s on

I remember in high school being really into That Guy With the Glasses, a series of critical video essays headed by Doug Walker. He eventually got his own website and channel (before moving to YouTube), and brought on a bunch of other critics into the fold, like The Cinema Snob and Obscurus Lupa. However, one of my favorite critics was The Nostalgia Chick (real name Lindsay Ellis), as she was much more... Read More...

Twitter users were quick to point that out with win...

Channing Tatum is officially the hottest fish in the sea. People has confirmed that the Magic Mike star is trading his quads for a caudal fin and starring alongside Jillian Bell in a gender-swapped remake of 1984's Splash. Tatum will slip into the role originally made famous by Daryl Hannah, as a mysterious, secret mermaid. Bell, meanwhile, will fill in for Tom Hanks as the lonely human who falls for the fish. The original films starts off when a young boy is saved from drowning by a beautiful mermaid. The mermaid resurfaces 20 years later, and gives the now grown-up boy...

Over the summer, Blip announced that it was entering the realm of original content with a new studio helmed by executive Steve Woolf. Now, Blip is increasing its efforts to bring viewers a daily stream of pop-culture related content with a new channel, the League of Super Critics, on YouTube. The channel will feature updates from five of Blip's most popular personalities, with each one taking over his or her own day. Mondays belong to The Nostalgia Chick, Lindsay Ellis, who has brought a more feminine appeal to old-school pop culture since she was hired by her male Critic counterpart. On Tuesdays, gothic girl The Maven releases Vampire Reviews, where she looks at various works of bloodsucking fiction. Doug Walker will bring his huge fanbase to the channel on Wednesday with a new episode of The Nostalgia Critic, which will undoubtedly run for 20 minutes and feature several references to Chuck Norris and M.

Abortion. A word that makes many people uneasy. And it’s also the center of an ongoing war between the Pro-Life supporters and the Pro-Choice side. Who’s right? Who’s wrong? Like most wars, both sides have some positive things about them and negative ones as well. With The A Word, Lindsay Ellis takes this hot topic and shows it for what it truly is. And that’s a choice, usually for a singular woman and in this case, it’s our filmmaker herself.
In 2009, Lindsay Ellis was 26 years old and a graduate student. She also had an abortion, like millions of women do, and decided to document herself showing both sides of the proverbial coin but giving a usually silent third side the chance to speak up: The women who have actually had the abortion. It was something I had not thought about before but the truth was there.
