Smt Heads, Summer is more than half over. But with Music Box Films’ The Captain, you’re still getting coolest in the upcoming indie film. Also, don’t miss the soft breeze of Mary Queen Of Scots with Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie. Not mention 80’s homage, Breakarate!
Based on a disturbing true story, The Captain follows Willi Herold (Max Hubacher), a German army deserter who stumbles across an abandoned Nazi captain’s uniform during the last, desperate weeks of the Third Reich. Newly emboldened by the allure of a suit that he stole only to stay warm, Willi discovers that many Germans will follow the leader, whosoever that happens to be. A parade of fresh atrocities follow in the self-declared captain’s wake, and serve as a profound reminder of the consequences of social conformity and untrammeled political power.

It's been seven years already since Kitano Takeshi decided that he still had some things left to say about the Yakuza and their world. After taking a break from the genres and themes that turned him into an admired cult director across the globe, Kitano returned to the shady underworld of the Japanese mob with Outrage in 2010 (you can travel back in time to our review roundup here). Of course, being the critical success that it was, people were left wanting for more. And so thankfully Kitano came back with the second chapter of the series, Beyond Outrage, back in 2014. Even though this time it wasn't as universally well received as the first one (though our own Ryland Aldrich was more than happy...

The best in bumper British (and the Isles) film returns in 2017, as part of a suite of country and region-specific festivals operating yearly under exhibitor and chain Palace Cinemas. This year features a smattering of retrospective murder mystery screenings, weepy dramas, documentaries and a smashing official selection of big name hits that I am relieved to see coming to Australia earlier than anticipated. These titles include Armando Iannucci's (Veep, In the Loop) The Death of Stalin (above), which our Festival Editor Ryland Aldrich says recaptures the dark and gilarious tone of early Veep in his dispatch. Also excited for the intense 80s embassy hostage thriller 6 Days starring the excellent Jamie Bell (Snowpiercer); Neil Gaiman adaptation How to Talk to Girls at Parties and high profile...

Alexander Payne's Downsizing has made stops on the festival circuit in Venice, Telluride and Toronto so far -- it will also be closing Fantastic Fest later this month -- and so it's time to take a look at its first full-sized trailer. Matt Damon stars. Our own Ryland Aldrich just saw it in Toronto: "Here Damon plays a man who shrinks himself to a few inches tall to join the popular movement of people reducing their size ostensibly to save the planet (but perhaps more accurately to indulge in their over consumptive impulses with less guilt). The film does not shy away from symbolism as it moves from relatively disparate act to act. Like many of the successful films at Tiff, it also relies heavily...

Xx, the all-female helmed horror anthology opens in cinemas across the U.S. and up here in Toronto this Friday (got my ticket for opening night)! Two clips were released today and they are below for your viewing pleasure. The first clip is from Karyn Kusama's chapter Her Only Living Son. Touted for being the most suspensful of the bunch by our own Ryland Aldrich when he caught the film at Sundance he said, "Kusama again gets to show off her suspense skills when a mother (played by Christina Kirk) tries to unravel the truth about why her son (Kyle Allen) begins to act more and more violent as he approaches his 18th birthday". A24 will be releasing the film on digital at the end of the month and in cinemas in March. Formerly under the guise of February, Perkins' debut was definitely a buzz title back in 2015. Our own Ryland Aldrich caught the film in Austin that year and was impressed with the debut from the son of horror royalty, Anthony Perkins. Something creepy is happening at the Bramford Academy Catholic girls school. While it isn't exactly clear what is going on, it's very obvious that the snowy...

Dutch animator, director and illustrator, Michael Dudok de Wit is the first foreign director to collaborate with Studio Ghibli as the Japanese animation house embarks into foreign waters and international production. After years of making award winning shorts (how many folks can claim to have won an Oscar, a BAFTA and a César? He can.) Dudok de Wit spent nine years bringing his debut feature, The Red Turtle, to fruition. The result is the rarest of cinematic things, an animated feature aimed more at adults than children. As Ryland Aldrich noted in his review, the film is "a sublime examination of what makes us human." The imagery, ideas and emotional storytelling contained in the film are nothing short of magnificent. I got the opportunity to...

Frank Pavich' documentary Jodorowsky's Dune has a lot of fans in these parts, with our Ryland Aldrich being one of them. Its subject is Jodorowsky's failed quest to create a film based on Frank Herbert's Dune saga, an attempt often considered to be "the greatest film never made". And while you can put some question marks there, pondering the epic that would have been is a fun exercise, one which the documentary fully supports. It's been out on DVD and Blu-ray in several regions already, and this week France added a special edition of their own to the list. What attracted me to it was the inclusion of an art-book, which is always a good thing and Especially with this title. What I didn't expect...

A24 has unveiled the second official trailer for Andrea Arnold's American Honey, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year to some rave reviews. The film stars newcomer Sasha Lane as a teenager who joins a traveling magazine sales crew, and falls for Shia Labeouf while trying to navigate a life of partying and passion and jealousy. Also starring McCaul Lombardi, Arielle Holmes, Crystal Ice and Riley Keough. This trailer really plays up a few quotes from our friend Ryland Aldrich's glowing review of the film, calling it the kind of outstanding work that we only see once in a generation, capturing the fleeting feeling of freedom and the tireless pursuit of the American dream. They also toss in Bruce Springsteen's "Dream Baby Dream" to help set the mood for this. I'm a big fan of the film, and I hope people check it out. Here's...

Jeremy Saulnier's Green Room is one of the best reviewed films of the year and we've teamed up with Lionsgate Home Video to giveaway a copy of the brand new Blu-ray to a ScreenAnarchy reader! In case you've been living under a rock, here's a basic idea of what the film, starring Anton Yelchin, Patrick Strewart, Alia Shawkat, and Macon Blair, is about: After witnessing a shocking crime, a young rock band is unexpectedly thrust into a life-or-death battle to escape the clutches of a diabolical club owner (Stewart) and his ruthless henchmen in this white-knuckle thriller. Winning the Jury Prize just last month at Cannes, Andrea Arnold's first stateside film, American Honey, starring newcomer Sasha Lane, Shia Labeouf and Riley Keough, is coming later this year courtesy of A24. Our own Ryland Aldrich declared the film "so touching, optimistic, and just plain beautiful [...] a feat sure to be appreciated and revisited by filmmakers and film viewers of this generation and for generations to come." High praise to be sure, but then again this is Andrea Arnold, arguably one of modern cinema's greatest voices, from the creeping trauma drama Red Road to the exuberant Fish Tank and a feverishly poetic Wuthering Heights adaptation. Charting the journey of a young woman named Star (Lane) as she travels across America making money, the...

As to the plot, let's turn again to the words of Mr. Aldrich (he saw the film at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year): The rough sketch is that 40-something year old Brayden (aka Big Brayden, aka Sky Elobar) still lives with his father Ronnie (aka Big Ronnie, aka Michael St. Michaels). To be brutally frank, after I saw that Folk Hero & Funny Guy (pictured above) will enjoy its world premiere as part of the Us Narrative Competition lineup, I stopped reading. Jason Reitman's latest foray into social commentary, Men, Women & Children is available today on Blu-ray and DVD, and we have three Blu-rays -- and one book -- to give away. When the film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall, our own Ryland Aldrich concluding his review by stating: Even with its slight sense of preachiness, when it is all said and done, Men, Women & Children is an entirely enjoyable film. It may be overly ambitious with its subject matter, but the characters are interesting and acting assured. Like he did with Labor Day, Reitman is bound to get some stick for taking himself too seriously. But if you look past what this is trying to say (or who it is...

Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund's new film Force Majeure, a wickedly funny jab at modern masculinity, garnered a lot of buzz as it made the rounds on festival circuit. It has earned its fair share of love from the Twitch community as well (read Ryland Aldrich's review from Fantastic Fest here). I had a chance to sit down with the director the day of the New York premiere of the film at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Östlund, in person, was very friendly, easy going and eager to talk about anything from the role of modern men in society, Swedish humor, his influences to Seinfeld.Twitch: Your take on Swedish society really fascinates me. Your previous film, Play, was such an impactful, divisive film. How did...

While we've had an interesting string of films about Somali pirates, Cutter Hodierne's feature debut is the only one of these that is from the perspective of the pirates themselves.Fishing Without Nets follows a young Somali fishermen who is thrust into the intense world of high seas, high stakes piracy. When our own Ryland Aldrich reviewed the film at Sundance (where Hodierne won the jury prize for directing) he stated that the film "takes a world to which we've been recently introduced, and expands it to magnificent results... Hodierne has crafted a visceral cinematic experience. You can practically smell the burning trash fires in the village and feel the spray of the surf as the small boats crash through the overhead waves."Ahead of its theatrical...

Presenting a marvelous banquet of fantastic titles with their first announcement, Utopia: The Tel-Aviv International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film has, in the proverbial sense, something for everyone -- as long as you have good taste in genre films! Kicking things off on September 13 will be Terry Gilliam's The Zero Theorem, which, as always with Gilliam, means a must-see title, no matter the reaction to it. What We Do in the Shadows, which tickled the fancy of our own Ryland Aldrich when he saw it earlier this year, will serve as the closing night presentation on September 20. In between are plenty of tasty titles, including some that are well-known to the Twitch readership -- Frank Pavich's documentary Jodorowsky's Dune -- and...

Updated 7/23: Trailer now embedded below. Set to make its Canadian debut at Fantasia in Montreal tonight (July 22), Honeymoon is "very much its own beast," according to our own Ryland Aldrich. It's "a good story, excellently told, and very, very scary." That story follows a newly-married couple who decide to spend their honeymoon at a family lake house in a remote, isolated location. Things happen to disrupt what should be a lazy, blissful week, and then more things happen, and then things get horrifying. Leigh Janiak directed; Rose Leslie, Harry Treadaway, Ben Huber, and Hanna Brown star. A new poster is suitably mysterious, while suggesting the horror that lies within. It's heading to theaters and various Video On Demand platforms on September 12. A new trailer has...

Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett's thriller The Guest made quite an impression on our Festivals Editor Ryland Aldrich when he caught their latest at Sundance. You can read his full review at the link but this is what he had to say about the film right off the hop....director-writer duo Adam Wingard and Simon Barrett are quickly becoming two of the most exciting filmmakers working in the genre space right now. This trend absolutely continues with their latest feature, a guns-blazing throwback called The Guest. Equal parts creepy, slow-burn horror and bloody, balls-out actioner, Wingard and Barrett again prove that best kind of genre movie is the one with which you can have the most outright fun. We could not agree more with Ryland. He would...

A terrific new trailer for David Gordon Green's Joe features Nicolas Cage in restrained mode as a quiet man who is finally moved to action. About the titular character, our own Ryland Aldrich described him thusly: "An ex-con with a troubled past and a penchant for making people want to hurt him, Joe is trying to turn things around in his life. But Joe's life just doesn't seem to be cooperating with these new plans." (You can read Ryland's entire review from the Toronto International Film Festival right here.) The film also stars Tye Sheridan, who was excellent in Jeff Nichols' Mud. The trailer does a good job in setting up the premise and establishing a tense mood. Joe will be released in France on...

Let me start off this latest edition of Fund This Film with full disclosure: I don’t know Ryland Aldrich from Adam, unlike some of the writers and editors at Film School Rejects and our colleagues elsewhere. He follows me on Twitter, and I’m aware that he writes for Twitch, but that’s as close as we get. His email asking for his new project, Folk Hero & Funny Guy, to be spotlighted in this column received the same skepticism as every other email pitching a crowdfunding project that I get on a daily basis. Fortunately it turned out to be a campaign I could be excited about, because otherwise it might have been awkward. Not because of the relationship Aldrich has with others here at Fsr so much as because the campaign video directly mentions Fsr as the best, most important place for movie criticism on the web. That last bit is a tad exaggerated. But...

Alex Karpovsky will star in Folk Hero & Funny Guy as a struggling stand-up comedian who goes on tour with his successful singer-songwriter friend -- but in order to make that happen, some crucial seed money is needed. Granted, the idea of a comic road trip movie is fraught with peril, and contributing to any indie film requires a leap of faith, but here are three reasons why I'm putting my money where my mouth is and donating to this project: (1) The pitch video, featuring writer/director Jeff Grace, is breezy and funny. (2) Karpovsky, a talented actor and filmmaker, is a compelling presence, even when he's playing a character I find loathsome, as in Lena Durham's HBO series Girls. (3) Ryland Aldrich is producing....
