On Monday, Alex Wagner invited fellow MSNBC hosts Martin Bashir and Al Sharpton on her midday program to discuss the political impact of Obama’s support for gay marriage as registered in a new CBS/New York Times poll: the verdict in the poll was that the news is not good for team Obama. In fact, the news was so bad that Bashir took to arguing with the respondents have “accused” Obama of making a political calculation. Those voters, Shaprton said, should be “smarter” than to think Obama won political points with his pivot. Their resentment is, well, misguided.

On NBC, Alec Baldwin appears as arch-conservative 30 Rock character Jack Donaghy; on its sister cable network, MSNBC, he offers the perspective of a politically active New York City progressive. The Emmy-winner appeared on Lawrence O'Donnell's news show The Last Word on Tuesday, playing anchor for a while and then joining a panel with Alex Wagner to discuss the already-heated presidential race. “These guys are really, really getting scared. They know it’s not looking good for them," Baldwin said of Republicans. "They spent a lot of money on a very bloody primary. I was one

On Tuesday, Alex Wagner’s MSNBC panel tackled the heated Republican primary race between five-term Sen. Richard Lugar (R-in) and Indiana State Treasurer Richard Murdoch. The panel seemed to view the intraparty Republican feud as a continuation of the Gop’s rightward-drift ever farther away from the center of the American electorate. New York Daily News Columnist S.E. Cupp, however, had the temerity to suggest that the Republican party was pushed in that direction by the opposition – an assertion that was met with near revulsion by her fellow left-leaning panelists.

On her show Tuesday afternoon, Alex Wagner had a little segment called "Wags Wager." The aptly titled game involved Wagner and her panel — comprised of Governor Ed Rendell, Vanity Fair contributing editor Bethany McLean, The Daily Beast’s Patricia Murphy and Salon.com’s Steve Kornacki — placing bets on the outcome of tonight's primary races. Literally. With poker chips. And fake money.

While Jean-Claude Van Damme now prefers to make narcissistic reality TV shows I had the chance to revisit one of his earlier works this week as Double Impact returns to DVD on 19th September. Made in 1991, Double Impact marked Van Damme’s first foray into the acting challenge of the dual role, here playing twin brothers separated at birth and distinguished by slightly different hairstyles.
Van Damme plays Chad and Alex Wagner who are separated as infants when their parents are brutally murdered by members of a Hong Kong criminal cartel. 25 years later, Chad has moved to California via Paris, by way of explanation for his unusual accent, to become a karate teacher and Alex, who stayed in Hong Kong, has become involved in the criminal underworld. Hollywood Week continued on "American Idol" Thursday night, as the remaining 100 contestants performed solo numbers in hopes of becoming America's "next top adult contemporary star."

It’s the final day in our Films Of 2010. To celebrate and rejoice in the best art and entertainment format there is, we’ve each asked our contributors to name their top five films of the year and give a bit of an explanation.

Making a top ten list is difficult enough and a top five even harder. Some great flicks got left by the wayside and we’ve got honourable mentions here and there. Judging from results, we’ve definitely got a clear winner – which we’ll announce and crown shortly.

The year is almost over and the last few stragglers are hitting the cinema screens in a bid to wish 2010 a fond farewell and hello to a new decade. Please feel free to add your own comments and suggestions. Seriously, we see a lot of films and sometimes it’s easy to forget. Five minutes later you find yourself saying “oh wait, what about…”

Hye-ja Kim plays Mother. She is in her fifties and apart from scraping a living selling herbs and providing acupuncture to the local customers, she spends her days mollycoddling her mentally disabled 27-year-old son Do-Joon (Bin Won).
After being released from an assault charge, he goes out on a drinking binge vowing to have sex with a girl but he gets so plastered that he is thrown out of a bar. As he stumbles home he comes across a young schoolgirl who he propositions.
The next morning the police find the very same girl dead and the evidence points to only one suspect. Do-Joon is arrested for murder and now this overprotective Mother will do anything to clear his name and prove him innocent. After all her son is only a harmless slow-witted fool isn’t he?
As the plot thickens and unravels we uncover extra details and complications that...

I’m dead against this Us remake of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s Let The Right One In. Firstly, I loathe the new title. Let Me In is the title of a R.E.M. song, and why did they feel the need to change it? It doesn’t give it a new identity and the context and thematic emphasis changes slightly. I know fellow Filmshaft writer Alex Wagner hates the idea of this remake too.
Matt Reeves, director of Cloverfield, is helming this new version starring Kick-Ass heroine Chloe Moretz and The Road’s Kodi Smit-McPhee.
The L.A. Times has been chatting with director Reeves about his nerves and intentions for the remake. He does concede people will be carving their knives for this one, but hopes he’s done a good job, telling the newspaper:
