Read More: Why You Might Feel Old At Vidcon (And That's A Good Thing) YouTubers Brandon Laatsch, Joe Penna, Zach King, Sam Gorski and Niko Pueringer shared important lessons with fans during a panel discussion on Diy special effects at this year's Vidcon. The hour-long conversation, which was moderated by Indiewire's TV Editor Liz Shannon Miller, provided a blend of practical and conceptual advice on best practices when it comes to experimenting with special effects. 1. Your first priority should always be story (not effects). As King put it, "effects complement the story." No matter how realistic they might appear, special effects carry little to no meaning without the existence of a narrative framework. The preoccupation with getting special effects to coincide with reality. "We're not trying to convince people that what is happening in these videos is real. It's more for the entertainment factor," said Gorski. "We're trying to communicate the idea of.

Freddie Wong's third Video Game High School crowdfunding campaign has received plenty of attention, but the other half of Rocket Jump has launched a massive Kickstarter project of his own. Brandon Laatsch is behind Birth Of Fan, a feature-length fan film adaptation of the hugely popular Minecraft video game. Laatsch introduced Birth of Man with a 90-second teaser on the Freddiew channel. It establishes the film as a classic 'hero's journey' coming-of-age story, but as with most Rocket Jump productions, the visual effects shine the brightest. Though Birth of Man will be live action, it is set within the blocky Minecraft world, and Laatsch has done a great job of translating the game's grid-based commands onto the screen. As Laatsch explains in his pitch video, he was inspired to create a feature film based off Minecraft after being disappointed by Hollywood video game adaptations. He notes that the world...

You can see what the creators of "Video Game High School" came up on their YouTube channel now. Starting August 25, it'll be on all over the Internet, from Espn.com to Pandora. Harley Morenstein and Muscles Glasses of Epic Meal Time are no longer the only Collective Digital Studios partners to star in a fast food commercial. Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch, the special effects whiz kids behind the Freddiew channel, have created a 30 second spot for Taco Bell, in which they chow down on digital versions of the chain's addictively delicious Doritos Locos Tacos. The video features Wong and Laatsch as they use a 3D printer to create a digital version of the year-old menu item. I can think of more worthwhile uses of 3D printing, though I'm glad Wong and Laatsch aren't using their fictional device to open disseminate firearms. The spot will run on a number of national websites, including Espn.com, Pandora, Songza, CBS Sports, and MTV Properties. In short, it will be appear in all the places where people who enjoy 'Mexican fare wrapped in junk food'...

Though it has yet to debut, the second season of Video Game High School has already made plenty of headlines. First, Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch secured a sponsorship deal with Dodge Dart, and they followed that up by securing more funds through a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign. Wong has also discussed his use of mixed frame rates and longer episodes, both of which will ensure a more TV-like feel for the popular web series. After all the hype, we now have a chance to see what the completed product will look like. Wong and Laatsch have posted the season two trailer for Video Game High School on the Freddiew channel, complete with a churning Edm soundtrack. The most striking feature of the trailer is the number of visible game modes. We see Brian D, Jenny Matrix, and the rest of the Vghs crew partake in the Fps game from season...

Dozens of YouTube stars will make their way to the Anaheim Convention Center between August 1-3 for the fourth annual rendition of Vidcon, the largest convention dedicated to online video. Alongside those YouTubers will be thousands of their fans; for the first time, Vidcon's attendance is expected to exceed 10,000 people. Vidcon's attendees will include both industry professionals and fans. August 1st will belong to the former group, while the latter one will descend upon Anaheim the next day for a series of performances, meet-and-greets, panels, and parties. "Even when VidCon was just 1,000 people in a hotel, it was our goal for the conference to reflect the growth and culture of the online video industry," said Hank Green, creator and cofounder of VidCon, "VidCon's exponential growth over the last four years is indicative of online video's impact on the entertainment industry and on our everyday lives." Several of YouTube's most prominent Asian-American stars are getting their game on. ISAtv, a channel owned by Wong Fu Productions and Far East Movement (of 'Like a G6' fame) has launched a variety program titled Isa! that emulates crazy Japanese game shows. The show features an impressive roster of talent. Wong Fu's Philip Wang, The Guild's Amy Okuda, and KevJumba host, while contestants include David Choi, Freddie Wong, and Brandon Laatsch, who identifies himself as the show's "only Caucasian contestant." In the first quarter of Isa!, each contestant reveals two truths and one lie about himself or herself, with plenty of colorful graphics and funny graphics keeping up the Japanese feel. The second quarter features a game of "Pass It On", where the contestants must act out a given phrase charades-style. Suffice to say, it does not go so well. Parts three and four will be released shortly.

A handful of YouTube's most popular nerds are coming together for a rumble...in the living room. Smosh Games and Node Studios have joined forces for Video Game Olympics, a multi-game gauntlet filled with camaraderie, competition, and, most assuredly, a big time viewcount. Video Game Olympics will be split into two parts. Featured gamers will include the team from Smosh Games, including Ian Hecox, Anthony Padilla, and the ClevverGames crew, as well as some of the contributors to Node Games, such as Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch of Freddiew and Sam Gorski and Niko Pueringer of Corridor Digital. The recently released trailer hints some of the games that will be included, such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Halo 3, and Mario Kart. The full event will roll out in two parts, with the first one debuting on May 10. This mainly seems like an excuse for a bunch of gamers to get...

What do you get when you combine a polarizing video game character with a hyperviolent film based off a classic work of postmodernism? The answer to that headache of a question is Metal Gear Sunrise, the newest freddiew video, where channel co-creator Brandon Laatsch has mashed up the upcoming Metal Gear Rising video game with American Psycho. The feature mocks the morning routine scene from the 2000 Christian Bale, which was already a mockery in itself. Even if you're not into meta-commentary, you can still enjoy freddiew's entry into the 'use special effects to make Fruit Ninja real' subgenre. For those of you who are not fans of Freddie Wong you can revel in the part of this video where he gets diced into a million fine pieces. Borrowing lines liberally from Brett Easton Ellison's novel of 80's yuppie narcissism run amok, the slickly-produced (and very funny) video shows how (among other things) Raiden keeps his metal exterior so shiny.
The video was published via the FreddieW Youtube channel and created by Brandon Laatsch (director of the web series "Video Game High School"). Actor Eric Linden plays Raiden, and maybe the funniest detail in the whole thing is that they had to find a t-shirt and slacks to fit over Raiden's chassis.

Web series "Video Game High School" is raising the bar on the crowd-sourcing platform Kickstarter, having beat out previous film fundraising records by almost double. "Video Game High School" has raised $808,341 from more than 10,000 backers. The money will be used to fund the second season of the show, which began production last week. The campaign now ranks above those for Blur Studio's comic book film "The Goon" (which raised $441,900) and Charlie Kaufman's animated film "Anomalisa" ($406,237), as the most successful Kickstarter campaign for a video or film project (go here for the full chart). To put this into perspective, the Kickstarter website states that just 420 projects in total have raised in between $100k to $999,999. "Video Game High School" was created by Freddie Wong, Brandon Laatsch and Matt Arnold. Described as a "series about best friends, first loves, and landing that perfect...

Shoot with multiple cameras. Unless you’re making a webcam video blog, try to get your hands on two cameras to capture the action from different angles. Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch, the brains behind the FreddieW channel and its Video Game High School web series, recently released a detailed infographic detailing the myriad costs of a large scale video project. A new agreement, however, will help FreddieW more easily clear these financial hurdles. The second season of Vghs will be a branded effort by Dodge, and the automotive company's Dodge Dart car will play a big on-screen role. Wong is not the first YouTube star to sign on with a corporate sponsor. Most notably, Epic Meal Time has partnered with several companies in the past; its netflix.com/bacon promotion always reminded me how much I enjoy both movies and cured pork belly. Emt's 3.1 million subscribers were a clear incentive for Netflix, but Dodge is playing to an even bigger audience. The FreddieW channel is the sixth most-subscribed on all of YouTube with more than 4.1 million fans.

One thing that comes with being a entire generation's cultural touchstone for a wohle medium is that the homages, remixes and pastiches keeping coming in a steady, unbroken stream. It seems like hardly a month goes by without some kind of tribute on "Super Mario Bros." (The GTA-style one from a few months back was a classic.)
But the latest "Omg, Smb is so awesome" video folds in a sly bit of commentary about Nintendo itself. The clip--created by USC cinema students Freddie Wong and Brandon Laatsch--puts the iconic plumber in the middle of a first-person shooter.
