Production continues on DC Studios' Superman, and just days after sharing that widely discussed first look at David Corenswet's Man of Steel, director James Gunn has now shared a new behind-the-scenes photo.
This one highlights comic book luminaries invited to set by the filmmaker and executive, including current Superman writers Jason Aaron and Joshua Williamson, along with legends like Dan Jurgens and Jerry Ordway.
Justice League International's Kevin Maguire was also on hand, as was Mister Terrific's co-creator John Ostrander and DC Comics heavyweights Jim Lee and Scott Snyder. You'll also spot All-Star Superman artist Frank Quitely (that comic has seemingly been a key source of inspiration for the DC Studios co-ceo).
"Great day with some comic book titans visiting the [Superman] set," Gunn said on Instagram. "So many of my heroes all at once it was really overwhelming."

It's hard to believe, but 2024 marks 40 years since the story of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began on the page. Idw plans to celebrate the anniversary with a new line of comic books, including a relaunch of the main series from Avengers and Thor writer Jason Aaron.
In the series, the prolific comic book writer plans to take the Heroes in a Half-Shell back to their gritty roots, bringing them back in line with the original black-and-white stories from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' first four issues will feature a revolving door of artists with Joëlle Jones (Catwoman) kicking things off in a Raphael-focused first issue. The second instalment shifts the spotlight to Michelangelo with art by Rafael Albuquerque (American Vampire).
Then, in issue #3, Paper Girls co-creator Cliff Chiang will put his spin on Leonardo before Donatello takes centre stage in the Chris Burnham-illustrated (Batman Incorporated) fourth chapter.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles began their lives in comic book form 40 years ago before going on to become a media and merchandizing brand and are currently enjoying a massive revival in the sequential art format. In fact, the top selling graphic novel in North America for two years in a row has been Tmnt: The Last Ronin, the collected trade paperback of the acclaimed mini-series from the early 2020s.
Idw, the company which holds the Tmnt license, is capitalizing on the half-shell heat but launching a new ongoing series, one that will return the series to its gritty and action-packed roots seen in the original black and white indie comics from creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
Simply titled Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the new series is written by Jason Aaron, the comics author behind the gritty creator-owned crime series Scalped and his action-packed work on Marvel’s Wolverine and Thor: God of Thunder,...

Thor: Love and Thunder had all the makings of the best Marvel Studios movie ever. Heavily inspired by Jason Aaron's Thor run and featuring both The Mighty Thor and Gorr the God Butcher, the sequel has a lot going for it.
Among those plus points was Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi. He'd successfully reinvented the God of Thunder in that 2017 blockbuster and fans were excited to see what came next. Unfortunately, the result was a movie which largely disappointed fans and let down both its new and returning characters.
Waititi, who was given perhaps too much freedom with Thor: Love and Thunder, has largely shrugged off the complaints. Chris Hemsworth, however, has addressed them head-on and doesn't shy away from acknowledging where the movie fell short.
Talking to Vanity Fair, the Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga star made it clear he still hasn't forgiven himself. "I got caught...

Earlier this year, the surprise announcement that Oni Press is resurrecting EC Comics delighted horror fans around the world, but that was only the begining! More series and creator announcements have been teased, and we're excited to exclusively reveal a new line of variant covers, which you can check out right now! Eisner Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning artist Jay Stephens, the creator of Dwellings, is honoring EC Comics with a new, continuing line of "EC Homage" variants, debuting with Epitaphs From The Abyss #1 and Cruel Universe #1. We have a look at both covers below, along with my personal favorite: Epitaphs From The Abyss #2, featuring Jay Stephens homage of Haunt Of Fear #15 by Johnny Craig!

Since the debut of Iron Man in 2008, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has introduced countless memorable characters. However, no one left a mark as deep on the franchise as Tony Stark.
Tony Stark
Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, is still an iconic character in the MCU, adored by everyone in the universe. His story is more than just a superhero; It’s a heartwarming story of resilience and redemption. Filled with challenges and personal demons, his path exemplifies human resilience and the ability to transform adversity into something extraordinary.

But in the pages of Jason Aaron and Aaron Kuder’s comic book Avengers Forever (2021), Tony Stark faces a fate very different from his on-screen portrayal in the MCU

Taika Waititi is a prolific director who created one of the best Marvel movies to date, aka Thor: Ragnarok. Yet his next venture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe turned out to be one of the most debatable entries of the entire superhero verse. Thor: Love and Thunder, although based on the comics, had some polar opposite reviews, while some found the silliness and goofiness of the movie fun others criticized it for being too tacky.

Marvel fans, too, jumped on the wagon to blame Watiti’s aversiveness to the character of Thor as the reason why the movie was so bad. But if Anthony Mackie’s new interview has some weight, it means all the criticism surrounding Love and Thunder being unlike the comics was for nothing.

The Marvel comics usually have had their fair share of freakish, startling, and unusual storylines, that not many people have been aware of. Despite their immense popularity, one can often find one or the other shocking arc involving characters that an MCU fan would have never dared to imagine.
Thanos and Hela in Unworthy Thor #4
One of these narrative arcs is when Thanos and Hela got together in the Marvel comics. A truly unusual event that even Marvel comics fans might have not expected, here is a glimpse into the unlikely romance of the Mad Titan and the Goddess of Death.

Back in 2021, Keanu Reeves teamed up with Boom! Studios to bring us the comic book series Brzrkr, which Reeves wrote alongside Matt Kindt, working off of Reeves’ original idea. Netflix secured the rights to bring a live-action film adaptation of the comic book to their streaming service – and to follow that up with an anime spin-off series that will “expand the Brzrkr universe by exploring different elements of the story”. So far, there have been twelve issues of Brzrkr, as well as a couple one-shots called Poetry of Madness and Fallen Empire (which told of B.’s distant past). Reeves is also writing a book called Elsewhere with China Miéville that is “set in the world of Brzrkr“. While all of these stories play out on the page, the Netflix movie remains in development. Now it has been announced that we have another Brzrkr project to look forward to: a...

Fans have been excited beyond measure for Mahershala Ali’s portrayal of Blade in the new reboot for the MCU. While the character has already been adapted once with Wesley Snipes in the lead, this would be the first time that the character would be shown in the MCU and would appear along with other Marvel characters.
While Ali’s inclusion was announced way back in 2019, the film has been delayed numerous times. The actor only had a brief voice cameo in the post-credits scene of Eternals but has not made any other appearances since. It was rumored that the actor was not satisfied with the script and was threatening to exit the role after four years of no updates.

There are many ingredients to the success of 1977's "Star Wars," from its spectacular cast of mostly unknowns to the groundbreaking special effects that revolutionized the industry and its lived-in universe rich in details and history. But another vital ingredient that ensured "Star Wars" would remain in audiences' minds forever was its use of iconography. Every visual aspect of the movie is memorable and striking, from the look of the human characters and alien creatures to the spaceships and buildings.
Take the stormtroopers, the faceless mob of soldiers with terrible aim and a tendency to bonk their heads on the ceiling. Though mere blaster fodder in the franchise, the stormtroopers are as much a part of "Star Wars" as the lightsaber or the Millennium Falcon. Even after 40 years, the franchise continues to find new uses for the stormtroopers, like finally showing how they became the main army of the Empire in "The Bad Batch.

Have you ever wondered what R2-D2 is saying with the little beeps and boops and whirring that he does? Is he quoting the galaxy far, far away's version of William Shakespeare? Perhaps he is commenting on the prequels? Nope. As it turns out, he's just telling everyone to f*&@ *^.

Shows and movies set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are rich with Easter eggs. They have been since 2008's "Iron Man," when a prototype of Captain America's shield appeared in a scene between Tony Stark and Pepper Potts. What's refreshing about "Werewolf by Night," then, is how Easter eggs are some of its only connections to the larger MCU.
Michael Giacchino's "Twilight Zone"-indebted special for Disney+ is a genuinely different outing for Kevin Feige's monolithic brand. It's shot in black and white. Most of its effects appear to be practical. The violence is genuinely brutal and bloody, and the story's connections to Marvel's ever-expanding shared universe are minimal at best (at least for now). For those who want to scour "Werewolf by Night" for hidden characters and references, however, there's still a trove of tiny details to unpack. Here are the best easter eggs in "Werewolf by Night,...

‘Revealed! The Phoenix’s connection to the birth of Thor!’ screams the cover. What pray tell do Aaron & Walker have in store for us?
Well, essentially there’s a bizarre love triangle between Odin, Phoenix and Gaea with some frost giants thrown in as villains. Phoenix spurns Odin at the altar, Odin hooks up with Gaea and they conceive Thor, the frost giants come back for revenge and freeze baby Thor who’s promptly reignited back to life by the Phoenix power. The other Avengers hang around and mutter a bit but really don’t add anything to the story.

“Only the most broken people can be great leaders,” Namor (Tenoch Huerta) intones in the latest trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While the first trailer for Ryan Coogler’s highly-anticipated sequel conveyed a message of grief as the central characters mourned the death of King T’Challa, reflecting audiences’ continued grief over the loss of Chadwick Boseman, the latest trailer puts a greater focus on the film’s narrative. It even hints at the inclusion of a key Marvel villain that hasn’t been announced.
Although there is still a somber tone, one that I suspect will permeate the film as a means to permit collective grieving over Boseman, this trailer is a confirmation that the death of T’Challa will not make the world smaller. "Thor: Love and Thunder" is a film heavily inspired by the Marvel Comics, specifically Jason Aaron's famous run on the God of Thunder. Featuring everything from Jane Foster, aka the Mighty Thor, to the two goats Toothgnasher and Toothgrinder, "Love and Thunder" feels heavily influenced by Aaron's take on the character and the world of Asgard.
Perhaps the most considerable influence Aaron's Thor comic had on the film, aside from the introduction of Jane Foster's Mighty Thor, is the villain at the center of "Love and Thunder." Gorr the God Butcher, portrayed by Christian Bale in the film, is an original character created by writer Jason Aaron and artist Esad Ribić as the first major villain for their run.
Gorr's monstrous appearance and powerset soon made him one of the most popular Thor villains, so there was plenty of excitement when Christian Bale was cast as the villain. Bale's...

This article contains Thor: Love and Thunder spoilers.
The Prince of Power has arrived! In the final post-credit scene of Thor: Love and Thunder, a humiliated Zeus (Russell Crowe) plots his revenge against Thor and the other superheroes who take the worship due to gods. He sends them a god in the form of a hero with his son, Hercules, played by Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein. Love and Thunder doesn’t give us much about the new hero, as we hear Goldstein growl only one line.
But Hercules has a long history in the comics, which give us some indication of the character’s role in the MCU. Looking at his stories before and within Marvel Comics, we can see how Hercules could restore a sense of high adventure!

In the early days of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, critics lobbied one consistent complaint against the franchise: no good villains. Sure, there was Loki and the Red Skull, but who else? Iron Monger was just Jeff Bridges’ head floating atop a CG robot, Maliketh the Dark Elf absolutely wasted the magnetic Christopher Eccleston, and the less said about Whiplash the better. Over the years, that complaint has diminished somewhat with the additions of Black Panther baddie Killmonger and the universe-destroying Thanos.
But even as the MCU continues to improve its roster of villains, there’s one irreplaceable bad guy fans are dying to see: the ruler of Latveria, Dr. Victor von Doom.
Doom’s Marvel Origin
Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Doctor Doom made his first appearance in 1962’s Fantastic Four #5, immediately establishing himself as a formidable threat, with his green tunic and metallic mask. The six decades...

How the hell has Kieron Gillen never written a summer event comic before?
Gillen is the writer behind Eisner- and Hugo-nominated comics such as perennial Den of Geek favorites Once & Future and The Wicked + The Divine. But even before that, he was part of that mid-aughts wave of Image writers who took over Marvel’s flagship books. Gillen wrote a couple of excellent Utopia-era X-Men books (Generation Hope and Uncanny X-Men), as well as a beloved run with Kid Loki that helped inspire one Disney+ show and a relaunch of Young Avengers with Jamie McKelvie that is likely going to have an impact on the MCU further down the line. And yet, somehow, his first blockbuster comics crossover is out in 2022.

Whatever your feelings about Thor: Love and Thunder, no one can deny that Natalie Portman’s performance as Dr. Jane Foster aka the Mighty Thor lights up the screen like a flash of lightning. After an absence of nine years, Portman returns to the MCU with an energy and lightness not always seen by the cerebral actor. With a meaty role that lets her play both the cancer-stricken Foster and the Mjolnir-wielding Mighty Thor, Portman goes all-in with the performance, adding vibrancy to a movie that sometimes feels like a retread of its predecessor. But after Jane sacrifices her life to become the Mighty Thor one last time and stop the evil Gorr the God-Butcher, an end-credit sequence shows her entering Valhalla, the afterlife for Norse warriors. Does that mean her electric performance will only strike once in the MCU?...

Taika Waititi's "Thor: Love and Thunder" has the honor of bringing Jason Aaron's beloved Mighty Thor into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Waititi pulls some story beats and characters from Aaron's decade-long run, which shapes Dr. Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) into the Goddess of Thunder, a Valkyrie, and then into a unique mixture of both, the latest Thor film doesn't wholly embrace its source material. Jane Foster is never telepathically summoned to the moon by Mjolnir. Thor hasn't lost his god status. Earth doesn't have a Frost Giant invasion, and most importantly, Jane's All-Weapon never once...

Taika Waititi's "Thor: Love and Thunder" is a bit of a mess. It's a film that tries to synthesize elements from all three previous "Thor" movies, including Thor's romance with the human scientist Jane Foster, while also serving as a followup to "Avengers: Endgame" and re-imagining Jason Aaron's run on "The Mighty Thor" comic books for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. At the same time, it wants to raise the bar for tech by utilizing Ilm's StageCraft and Satellite Lab's PlateLight to create its cosmic settings. The result is an MCU film that lacks the cohesive...

How do you adapt characters with decades upon decades of source material? As far as the Marvel Cinematic Universe is concerned, you pick two to three specific stories and meld (or muddle) them into one. Taika Watiti's "Thor: Love and Thunder" is no different, mashing together comic arcs from "The God Butcher," where Thor faces off against the villain Gorr, who has a grudge against deities, and "Thor: Goddess of Thunder," where Jane Foster becomes the new wielder of Mjolnir.
Both arcs are the work of the same writer, Jason Aaron. What changes did Watiti and co-writer Jennifer Kaytin...

Back in my days as a metal and hard rock journalist, and when dinosaurs ruled the earth, a lot of bands would trot out a variation of this mantra when they had a new album on the horizon: “The heavier parts are really heavy, and the melodic parts are much more melodic.”
That was an immediate red flag, of course. It meant that the band was still allowed to write and record some heavy material, but the record label was also pressuring them to include more power ballads and radio-friendly tunes in order to sell more albums (if you remember those). For some reason I am reminded of this as I think about Thor: Love and Thunder, which goes to similar extremes in the sense that part of the movie is heavy and dark while the rest is weightless and evanescent to the point of meaninglessness.

One of the big reasons to see “Thor: Love and Thunder” on the biggest screen possible this weekend is to witness Christian Bale’s return to superhero cinema. But the former “Batman Begins” star is on the other side of the moral divide this time around, playing fearsome villain Gorr the God Butcher. While absolutely terrifying in the role (Bale fully embodies him just like he does every other performance), the actor wasn’t so sure about translating the character exactly as he appeared in the comic books.
To prepare for the role, co-writer/director Taika Waititi gave Bale the Jason Aaron-penned run of comic books that introduced Gorr the God Butcher to the masses. And when Bale looked at the books he was intrigued … and slightly worried. “I did have a look briefly and said, ‘He’s got a G-string on. Nobody wants to see me like that,...

From wandering across the stars with the Guardians of the Galaxy to coming face to face with Eternity, the embodiment of the MCU itself, Thor found his new purpose in the most unlikely of places.
But like all other MCU movies, the end of the story is not the end of Thor: Love and Thunder. With an end-credit sequence and a post-credit sequence following the main narrative, the movie gestures toward the God of Thunder’s next adventures.

Director Taika Waititi is back in the Marvel business with Thor: Love and Thunder. There is a mix of horror, romance and drama, but at its core is pure comedy that doesn’t always work but is good enough to entertain. Thor: Ragnarok saw a 180-degree image and personality change for the character and stands among the best of the franchise so far. The beauty of Ragnarok is its focused storytelling and poignant message, while Thunder is a little all over the place. But Waititi’s comedic timing, and talent for creating dynamic action scenes, is too good to ignore, though it’s missing crucial elements that would push the superhero movie from being good to great.

"Thor: Love and Thunder" hits theaters soon, and we're getting a new MCU villain in Christian Bale. He plays Gorr the God Butcher, a character who, in the comics, loses his wife and child. He prayed to the gods of his people to save them, but they didn't. After, he vows to destroy the gods, and gains the Necrosword to do it with. That's an oversimplification, but for our purposes, it explains who Gorr is.
Gorr first appeared in Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic's run with "Thor: God of Thunder" #1 in 2013. He has quite the look in the comics, all black and white, as the best...
