He was called to National Service in April 1955 for the Royal Army Pay Corps and posted to the 1st Battalion of the Wiltshire regiment in Warminster which was later posted to Cyprus. He left in 1957 after becoming Corporal.
He worked as an office clerk for the Northern Guild of Commerce and Chamber of Trade before he became a junior editorial assistant in the Newcastle office of the Daily Mail until April 1955.
