For those who treasure a sense of place in movies, the new trailer for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, a film set for release by Paramount in October, brings a flicker of hope. (Pete Hammond’s Cannes review is here.)
True, it looks a little stagey, like Gangs of New York but out on the prairie. Still, for a few fleeting seconds—wedged among a scowling De Niro, a maundering DiCaprio and all those mortified Native people–tantalizing traces of the real Oklahoma peep through. Acres and acres of buffalo grass. Old brick facades. The kind of sky that hangs over Pawhuska and Bartlesville, where a 1982 tornado marched right up Frank Phillips Blvd. to the doorstep of Phillips Petroleum.
Maybe, just maybe, this film will find it: That wondrous, increasingly rare, cinematic sensation of actually being there.

It was after 1 a.m. in Antibes when Christina Aguilera performed at the 28th annual amfAR gala at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday morning. Inside a tent at the Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc, overlooking the Mediterranean sea, a lux crowd of European high rollers crowded the stage as Michelle Rodriguez took the mic to introduce the night’s headliner.
“Five-time Grammy Award winning … is going to bless you with her voice …”
“Six! Six!” the crowd of fans shouted back, correcting the “Fast & Furious” star on the number of Grammys Aguilera has actually won.
Yes, it was very late, but that didn’t stop Aguilera from putting on a powerhouse performance. Decked out in a fur jacket, despite the boiling temperature inside the tent, and surrounded by a flock of backup dancers, Aguilera rocked out like she was doing a stadium tour. The pop star’s five-song set opened with the 2002 dance anthem “Dirrty,...

A few days shy of his 75th birthday on Aug. 17, Robert De Niro hit the beach in Santa Monica, CA and took a dip in the Pacific. Though he’s marking his 50th year as a movie star, he’s never gone Hollywood — his hometown is where his heart is. "Hollywood is a place, an industry, and a state of mind," Robert has said. "But New York, New York is home." That’s where the most important people in his life are. "To me, family is everything," he shared. "My wife, Grace, my children, my grandkids [are] my entertainment, my art, my passion." Family has always come first for Robert, even though his parents — painters Robert De Niro Sr. and Virginia Admiral — divorced when he was only two years old. His dad came out as gay, and the family remained close; when Robert Sr. was stricken with cancer, Virginia cared for him,...

Last week we looked at Remembering the Artist: Robert de Niro Sr. which looked at the father of the Oscar winning actor who, in case you didn’t know, was a well-regarded visual artist and a gay man. The doc was (sadly) more interested in the former assertion than the latter, despite sexuality having been central to his art—his most curious muse? Greta Garbo in Anna Christie. This week, we’re taking about another doc portrait though one clearly more centered on its subject’s sexuality.

Remembering the Artist Robert De Niro, Sr. was made not out of desire, but necessity. For most artists, recognition is what keeps them going, pushing them forward onto the next painting, film, book, etc. The story of Robert De Niro Sr., the subject of this HBO documentary short, is a painfully familiar one — an artist who flirted with fame only to fade into oblivion. We open with the 1950 and 1960s, where a coterie of artists, dubbed the New York School of Art, have become the sensation of the art world. Members of this School of Art include Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko and most importantly, Robert De Niro Sr. He was a figurative artist known for still-life paintings, and as we’re shown throughout the movie, his work was straight forward and free of pretension, inspired by the French avant-garde artists like Pierre Bonnard and Icarus Matisse. Robert De Niro is famously a man of few words. But as he relaxes in his downtown Manhattan office, its walls covered in photos of his children and his iconic movie roles, he turns surprisingly tender when the subject turns to his father, an abstract expressionist painter who died in 1993. Robert De Niro Sr. "was loving and affectionate," says the two-time Oscar winner, 70. "But he wasn't the kind of dad who played baseball. He liked to take me to the movies on 42nd Street: King Kong, Beauty and the Beast." De Niro honors his dad in the HBO documentary Remembering...

It's hard to get Robert De Niro to talk about stuff.
The notoriously terse actor and director has a history of being tight-lipped and evasive (trust us, we would know). But, in anticipation of the June 9th premiere of his new HBO documentary, "Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro Sr.," De Niro has started talking about his father -- and his father's surprising sexuality.
In an interview with Out Magazine (via The Independent), "He probably was (conflicted about his sexuality)," the actor told Out. "Being from that generation, especially from a small town upstate (in New York)." Not that De Niro really noticed that his dad was that different. "I was not aware, much, of it. I wish we had spoken about it much more. My mother didn't want to talk about things in general, and you're not interested when you're a certain age."

De Niro shared that it was a sense of responsibility that inspired him to catalogue his father’s life – though initially he only intended the project to be for his children and future grandchildren. “I felt I had to. There are plenty of stars who have spoken out to support gay rights, but for some, the issue hits closer to home. In an interview with Out magazine, Robert De Niro spoke honestly about his father's sexuality, which is touched on in a new HBO documentary about his late dad's life. While he was not closeted, this was, in a way, a public coming out for the artist Robert De Niro Sr., and his son said he wished he would have honored him sooner. Like the Oscar-winning actor, several celebrities, including Adam Levine, Anne Hathaway, and Colin Farrell, have shared personal stories about their gay, lesbian, and transgender family members. HBO has released a trailer for "Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro Sr.," a short documentary about the life and work of abstract expressionist painter Robert De Niro Sr., father to Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro. De Niro Sr. was seen as a contemporary of Jackson Pollack and Mark Rothko -- albeit much lesser known. Executive produced by the younger De Niro's longtime producing partner Jane Rosenthal and HBO's Sheila Nevins, "Remembering the Artist: Robert De Niro Sr.," is an indemnification -- an attempt to give credit where credit is due. Against a backdrop of archival footage, photographs, and stills of De Niro Sr.'s artwork, the younger De Niro provides a narration that combines his own insight with excerpts from his father's journals. The result is a narrative just as surreal and abstract as the subject it covers. "He was to me a great artist, but you can never impose that on people,...
