In a competitive situation, Vendôme Pictures, the Oscar-winning banner behind “Coda,” has optioned the film and television rights to John Vaillant’s nonfiction book about climate change “Fire Weather: A True Story from a Hotter World.”
It comes after the book was released to much acclaim in June 2023 and went on to win the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction. It was also a finalist for the 2023 National Book Award, and was named a best book of the year by The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Financial Times and The Guardian, among many other prominent publications.
Vaillant took readers halfway through the hottest year of the hottest decade in recorded history, as a new kind of fire introduced itself to the world. Exclusive: Boiling Point actor Ray Panthaki and producer Daniel Khalili have acquired rights to journalist Nick Pitt’s sports biography The Paddy & The Prince as they continue work on their previously announced biopic of former boxer Naseem Hamed.
The duo acquired the book through their new film company Le Bateau Lavoir. The biography charts the relationship between Hamed and his mentor, Brendan Ingle, in intimate detail from 1981 when a seven-year-old Hamed walked into Ingles’s gym, located in an old church hall in Sheffield. The book recounts their story, tracking their turbulent progress from that day on.
Panthaki and Khalili’s currently untitled film project will be scripted by veteran screenwriter Martin Stellman (Quadrophenia), with production scheduled to begin early next year. Hamed is said to have a buy-in on the film.

Alexander Skarsgard will star in “The Tiger” as the leader of a group of men tasked with protecting the endangered cats from poachers and loggers.
The actor recently headlined the blood-drenched viking epic “The Northman,” receiving a great deal of attention for his physical transformation into a chiseled Norse avenger. He will team here with Ukrainian filmmaker Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi, who wrote and will direct “The Tiger” based on the book by John Vaillant. Slaboshpytskyi previously directed 2014’s “The Tribe,” a critically-heralded story about a school for the deaf that was done entirely in Ukrainian sign language, with no subtitles.
Dane DeHaan, who played the Green Goblin in “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” and will soon appear in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” is also attached to appear in “The Tiger.” He can currently be seen in Antonio Campos’ endlessly binge-able HBO Max drama “The Staircase.”

Though many want to see George Miller continue his adventures in the world of Mad Max, the director has always been one to divert from expectations and he’ll be doing just that with his newly-announced next project, Three Thousand Years Of Longing. Set to begin production next year, there’s no plot or casting to be revealed, but as one can glean from the title, it’s said to be entirely new territory for the director and “epic in scope,” Deadline reports. Update: THR reports that Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton will star in the film (also going by Djinn), which involves a love story and a genie.

Myroslav Slaboshpytskyi has come on to direct “Tiger” for Focus, sources tell Variety.
Darren Aronofsky’s Protozoa and Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner’s Plan B are producing.
The pic, based on the 2010 non-fiction book by John Vaillant, takes place on the Siberian plain, where human development is encroaching on the tigers’ habitat — and one tiger turns on the intruders. With townspeople being tracked and hunted with an almost supernatural power, a conservationist game warden must face down the tiger. It is a fight that only one of them can win.
Focus acquired the book in 2010 and at one point the project was eyed as a potential acting vehicle for Pitt and directing job for Aronofsky. In the end the two have decided to stay on as producers and allow Slaboshpystskyi step in to direct.

A huge animal-lover Tom Hardy is being eyed for the lead.

The director of the Oscar-nominated foreign film Bullhead, Michael R. Roskam, is set to direct his first Hollywood feature film. Focus Features has hired him to direct a film called The Tiger, which is based on a true story about a murderous tiger in Siberia.
The script for film was adapted by Babel scribe Guillermo Arriaga from a book written by John Vaillant. The story "takes place on the Siberian plain, where humans encroach on a tiger’s habitat with tragic results. There is a great male lead role of an animal activist and researcher who must stop a man-eating tiger that is attacking the inhabitants of a remote village in Russia’s Far East. The tiger isn’t just killing people, it’s murdering them, and the team that tracks him know their nemesis is cunning, injured, and starving, making it even more dangerous."

1.) Ron Howard has been taking a break from Rush to work on a documentary with Jay-z. The film will follow the rapper/producer as he curates the inaugural "Made in America" music festival. The two-day event takes place September 1-2 in Philidelphia and features 20 acts, including Pearl Jam, Run-dmc and Jay-z himself. Producer Brian Grazer says the film is "going to be born through Jay-z's perspective." This could be a really interesting spin on the traditional concert documentary if done right and given enough depth. As someone who attends festivals like Lollapalooza every year, I've always had a lot of curiosities about the ins and outs of these events. [New York Post] 2.) Originally a Darren Aronofsky vehicle before he moved his focus to Noah, The Tiger will now mark the Hollywood feature debut of Bullhead director Michael R. Roskam. Aronofsky will stick around to produce alongside Brad Pitt, while Guillermo Arriaga (Babel, Amores Perros) is handling the screenplay.

The subtitle of John Vaillant‘s book “The Tiger” proclaims it as “a true story of vengeance and survival.” In the current state of filmmaking, there are a handful of directors that would be perfect for the bill, and Bullhead director Michael Roskam is most definitely on the short list. His Best Foreign Film nominated flick about the illegal bovine growth market in Belgian was an aggressive and stunning portrayal of personal retribution and loneliness. According to Deadline Hollywood, Roskam is taking over the job vacated by Darren Aronofsky, and that’s undoubtedly good news. Not that it wouldn’t have been interesting to see Aronofsky’s take, but this way we get him shooting Noah and Roskam has another potential-filled project lined up to shine for. The story for The Tiger focuses on an animal activist who has to stop a tiger that’s killing people in a small Russian village. Beyond...

Michael R. Roskam ("Bullhead") will make his Hollywood directing debut on "The Tiger" at Focus Features and Random House Productions says Deadline.
Based on the novel by John Vaillant, the fact-based story is set around a remote village in Siberia where a man-eating tiger is deliberately attacking the inhabitants.
The main lead is an animal activist and researcher who leads a team tracking their cunning, injured, and starving nemesis. Guillermo Arriaga ("Babel") adapted the script.

Roskam is also developing the HBO pilot "Buda Bridge" which is set in Brussels in the near future.

Having jumped onto everyone’s radar with 2011′s excellent Belgian crime film Bullhead, it was only a matter of time before director Michael R. Roskam was brought over to the United States to work his magic in Hollywood. And now we know where he’s going to start. Deadline reports that Focus Features has signed on Roskam to direct The Tiger, the feature film adaptation of John Vaillant‘s 2011 nonfiction novel of the same name. The novel recounts the struggles of a village in the Russian province of Primorye, who came face to face with a human-killing Amur tiger in the late 1990′s. The Tiger recounts a team of trackers who are tasked with hunting down the man-killing tiger, whose starved and injured state makes him that much more vicious.

Originally set up for Darren Aronofsky to direct, The Tiger has found a new helmer in Bullhead director Michael R. Roskam. Deadline has the news, saying that Roskam will adapt the John Vaillant book, officially described as follows: It's December 1997, and a man-eating tiger is on the prowl outside a remote village in Russia's Far East. The tiger isn't just killing people, it's annihilating them, and a team of men and their dogs must hunt it on foot through the forest in the brutal cold. As the trackers sift through the gruesome remains of the victims, they discover that these attacks aren't random: the tiger is apparently engaged in a vendetta. Injured, starving, and extremely dangerous, the tiger must be found before it strikes again. As he re-creates these...

On its face, this book is about a tiger in Eastern Russia that went on a murderous rampage, and the hunt to find him. Probably not the most interesting plot for a fiction novel, but there's something about knowing this is a true story that makes things a lot more interesting. In addition to this, John Vaillant really delves into the history of the region and the people who inhabit it, making the book about so much more than the Amur Tiger.
Vaillant begins with the story at hand: In 1997, Yuri Trush, a squad leader of Inspection Tiger, is called to investigate a tiger attack. The attack seems to be more gruesome than normal and Trush is responsible for understanding why the attack occurred and determining if this tiger is a danger to others. Vaillant then goes into a detailed history of the eastern Russian region called Primorye and its inhabitants,...

Books: They’re just like movies, only without CGI.
So it’s no wonder that over the past century, Hollywood has consistently turned to books to provide the basis for some of its best works. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” for instance, was based on a book, while “Gigli” wasn’t. See how that works?

After his latest film, Black Swan, garnered acclaim from the various critics who saw it at festivals such as Venice and Toronto, Darren Aronofsky has been offered many projects. Though his name has, in the past few weeks, been associated with Preacher , Wolverine 2 as well as Superman reboot (now attached to Zack Snyder), Darren Aronofsky may make his next project the previously-announced The Tiger , according to a interview conducted with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga by CNN Mexico (Via The Playlist ). Arriaga states that location scouting will begin next month for a shoot early next year. Based on the non-fiction book by John Vaillant, the Brad Pitt-starrer tells the story of the hunt for a man-eating tiger in eastern Russia. There might not be another "Mr and Mrs Smith" movie but that does not mean people cannot see Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie working together again. Speaking to Spanish website Quien, scribe Guillermo Arriaga hints that the "Wanted (2008)" beauty is going to join her living partner Pitt in "The Tiger".
Pitt has been previously attached to take a lead role in the film that will be Darren Aronofsky's next directorial project. Jolie, meanwhile, had not been linked to "The Tiger" before and Arriaga does not clearly mention her part though many suggest that she will also star in the movie.
Arriaga, who is writing the script for "The Tiger" based on a non-fiction book by John Vaillant entitled "The Tiger: A True Story of Vengeance and Survival", says that he will begin scouting location later this year. "These days I'm traveling to New York to lend clarity to the last detail,...

Director Darren Aronofsky has been in the news a lot recently with his name being attached to a few different film project such as Preacher, Wolverine 2, and Superman, which Zack Snyder ended up taking. It sounded like he could have had the Superman job if he had not wanted to spend so much time on it making it perfect. The studio wanted it done fast though.
It looks like Aronofsky has moved on to another project called The Tiger. According to the films' screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga via CNN Mexico, Aronofsky's next film may very well be The Tiger. He also reveals that location scouting will begin next month for a shoot early next year, and that the previously-attached star Brad Pitt would be joined by Angelina Jolie.
The film will be adapted from the non-fiction book by John Vaillant, The Tiger tells the story of the hunt for a man-eating tiger in eastern Russia.

There is an interesting story coming from the smart writers at The Playlist that's worth mentioning. While we're all waiting with bated breath to see if Darren Aronofsky does indeed take the offer for Wolverine 2, they're saying that he might already be gearing up to start shooting another entirely different project called The Tiger. You may remember hearing about this, as we reported on the project earlier this summer. The Tiger is an adaptation of John Vaillant's non-fiction book about a game warden who must protect a Siberian town when a tiger begins attacking its inhabitants, with Brad Pitt attached to star - but there's a bit more! In a new interview with Guillermo Arriaga, who's adapting The Tiger for Aronofsky, the writer said that the film will shoot next year and that, apparently, Angelina Jolie will star along with her partner Brad Pitt. Huh? This is the first...

When Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt aren't busy being beautiful and collecting the world's supply of babies, they occupationally decide to be in a movie or two. Though they first met on the set of Doug Liman's Mr. and Mrs. Smith in 2005, they haven't appeared in a movie together since. Until, perhaps, now. Speaking with Spanish website Quien (translated into English), screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga has suggested that the two A-listers may team up again for Darren Aronofsky's The Tiger, which Pitt is already attached to. Based on the non-fiction book by John Vaillant, the film will center on an animal activist in Siberia who must protect a town from a wild tiger that has been attacking them. In regard to Jolie's casting, Arriaga says that they are now finalizing the deal. Pitt was originally meant to star in The Fountain before things fell through, and there's always a...

If at first two tries (The Fountain, The Fighter) you don't succeed, then try for the third time is where Darren Aronofsky is headed. I would have thought that the tenacious/stubborn Aronofsky would have dropped his working with Brad Pitt dream, but in the first major announcement at this year's Cannes film fest, the busy until 2017 Aronofsky has teamed with Focus Features to make something out of their deal with Random House book's film division. To be titled Hunting, this will be scripted by Guillermo Arriaga -- he of course wrote for Pitt's character in Babel.Based on an upcoming nonfiction book by John Vaillant titled The Tiger, centers on an animal activist who must protect the small Siberian town he is in when a tiger begins attacking its inhabitants. The Hollywood Reporter mentions that "Pitt and Aronofsky, who has not yet committed to directing "Hunting," have been developing...
