Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter, who was an influential partner to her husband, Jimmy Carter, in his unlikely rise to the Georgia governor’s mansion, then to the White House and later in his impactful post-presidency, died today at the age of 96, the Carter Center announced.
Carter, who suffered from dementia, entered hospice care on Friday. She died at 2:10 p.m. Et at her and her husband’s home in Plains, Ga, the center said.
Jimmy Carter said in a statement, “Rosalynn was my equal partner in everything I ever accomplished. She gave me wise guidance and encouragement when I needed it. As long as Rosalynn was in the world, I always knew somebody loved and supported me.” The Carters were married for 77 years, the longest of any presidential couple. The former president, now 99, entered hospice care earlier this year.

Who needs a limousine and roses – or even Richard Gere – when you have a guitar and can do a mean version of “Pretty Woman”?
Chris Martin knows how to perfectly win over Julia Roberts.
The Coldplay singer, 40, serenaded the actress, 49, during the eighth annual amfAR Gala in Los Angeles on Friday night.
Martin sang Roy Orbison’s classic that served as the theme song to Roberts’ 1990 film, Pretty Woman.

When Meghan Linsey appeared on The Voice in 2015, she’d already connected with one of the coaches: Blake Shelton.
The country singer once opened up for Shelton on tour as one-half of former duo Steel Magnolia. Still, her rousing blind audition turned every coach’s chair but Shelton’s, and landed her on Team Pharrell.
Before the season was over, though, Linsey found herself again working side-by-side with Shelton, who saved her during a battle round. With Shelton’s guidance, Linsey made it to runner-up – and left the show with renewed respect for her former tour mate.

One morning in February, singer Meghan Linsey woke up to a stinging sensation on her face. Still half asleep, she looked over and quickly realized there was a large, dying spider in her hand.
She’d been bitten by a brown recluse, a venomous spider found mostly in the south central and midwestern United States.
“The swelling was the first thing, and then I ended up just having crazy, crazy symptoms,” Linsey tells People. “I had muscle spasms, then I had a body rash all over. They tell people to not look up things on WebMD, and I had looked...

Shirley MacLaine’s long and legendary career has often been distinguished by her portrayal of women with colorful, feisty temperaments like Terms of Endearment’s Aurora Greenway, Steel Magnolia’s Ouiser Boudreaux and Postcards From the Edge’s Doris Mann.

Night One of The Voice's two-night finale featured original songs from each of the finalists, for the first time in the show's history. Nashville soul singer Meghan Linsey and Michigan folk rocker Joshua Davis each premiered self-penned numbers, while the two teenage contestants showcased tunes by a pair of well-known Grammy winners: Ray Lamontagne and Voice coach Pharrell Williams.

Meghan Linsey's version of Little Big Town's current hit "Girl Crush" brought down the house on The Voice Monday night – and earned her praise from all the coaches. But it was country icon Reba McEntire, who guested as a mentor on the episode, who said it best: "She kicked the dog poo out of that!"
It was a comment much appreciated by Linsey, who had a lot of pressure on her going into the performance, with coach Blake Shelton telling her during rehearsals, "You're doing my favorite song on country radio right now."

During Monday night’s Live Playoffs show, the country crooner offered up a heartfelt rendition of “Make You Feel My Love,” the Bob Dylan-penned love song that would also become a hit for Garth Brooks in 1989.

It sounds like Hollywood might be scraping the bottom of the barrel when it comes to remaking properties from the 80s, because The Weinstein Company and Miramax are looking into their 90s film library for a new remake. The Tracking Board (via TheWrap reports there's a remake of the 1999 high school romantic comedy She's All That in the works. At this time, Kenny Leon is attached to direct, which doesn't inspire much confidence since he directed Lifetime's 2012 remake of Steel Magnolias. However, when we take a look at the cast of that made-for-tv movie, it gives us an idea of what new direction this remake will take. The cast of Lifetime's Steel Magnolia's features a large black cast that included starred Queen Latifah, Alfre Woodard, Phylicia Rashād, Jill Scott, Adepero Oduye and Condola Rashād. And I'm betting that much like the remake of About Last Night, this remake will...

The Voice‘s Season 8 premiere featured every type of contestant that typically activates my “No bueno!” response: the wide-eyed teenage boy in a hipster hat (whose parents were barely zygotes in the heyday of Ccr, the kid’s alleged fave band); the music-industry vet with a big-time connection to one of the judges; the girl with a backstory that will spawn a dozen “Upworthy” Facebook links ending with the words “And you won’t believe what happens next.”
So how is it, exactly, that I pretty much loved all of the above — and several other auditioners, to boot?

On the morning of Sept. 17, 2011, Joshua Scott Jones was alone in the presidential suite at a San Diego Hyatt, nursing a beer. Groggy from popping pills and drinking all night with strangers, he didn't want the party to end, but his Steel Magnolia partner Meghan Linsey and their band had wanted no part of Jones's binge and had gone their separate ways the night before. "No one wanted to be around me," he tells People Country. "I had alienated everybody." In despair Jones gazed out his window and considered the 42 floors below: suicide. "It went through my head," he says.

Updated: NBC has given a late pilot order to Feed Me, a single-camera comedy from veteran producers Paul Junger Witt and Tony Thomas’ Witt/Thomas Prods (Blossom, Beauty And The Beast and its CW reboot, The Practice). NBC had been pursuing former Weeds star Mary-Louise Parker for multiple pilots. This is the script she responded to, helping it get a green light while the actress’ deal is being worked out. Feed Me would reunite Parker with NBC topper Bob Greenblatt who cast her in another dark comedy, Weeds, while at Showtime. Written by Sally Robinson, who penned Lifetime’s hugely successful Steel Magnolia remake, Feed Me is described as a comedic exploration of adult intimacy and desire that centers on a dysfunctional family bound by love and the restaurant they run together. And when daughter Emma’s husband has an affair, they circle the wagons to fiercely protect one of their own.

Richard Linklater's account of a real-life small-town murder has a winning mix of comedy and social observation
A native of east Texas whose first film was set in the state capital Austin, where he still works, Richard Linklater has long been fascinated by a real-life murder set in the tight-knit east Texas township of Carthage. In 1996, a much loved local mortician, Bernie Tiede, noted for his generosity, thoughtfulness, work for the church, organisation of amateur dramatics, suddenly shot the town's mostly disliked figure, the rich, mean, cantankerous widow Marjorie Nugent. Was he in revolt against his dependency on her? After her money? Just a little mad?
It's a fascinating slice of bizarre Americana, and with the aid of Jack Black (cast against type as the prissy Bernie), Shirley MacLaine (in Steel Magnolia mode as loathsome Marjorie), Matthew McConaughey (as a good ole boy district attorney out to nail Bernie...

New York -- If the holidays still seem a long way off, you clearly haven't done much television channel surfing lately.
The Hallmark channel has already begun two months of wall-to-wall holiday programming. Lifetime has ramped up its seasonal selections with 10 new made-for-tv movies, the first one airing last weekend. ABC Family's annual "25 Days of Christmas" programming isn't enough, so they do a "Countdown to 25 Days of Christmas," starting Sunday.
This is in addition to all the old favorites, from Charlie Brown to Frosty the Snowman, that will fill broadcast network schedules during the next month. An already popular television genre is growing in power, judging by the 22 new movies Hallmark and Lifetime are rolling out between them, and a new Disney holiday musical.
"This is a strategy that developed naturally from demand," said Rob Sharenow, executive vice president of programming at the Lifetime networks. "It's really giving people what they want.

Let's get the urgent concern out of the way first: Are we Ok with the idea of Lifetime's Steel Magnolias remake? I'm on the fence, but I love Phylicia Rashad, Jill Scott, and mesmerizing newcomer Adepero Oduye. That's the good news. The downside is that a Lifetime remake may expose Steel Magnolias for what it really is: a Lifetime movie at heart.
As much as the lovable 1989 tearjerker comes up in conversation (which is mysteriously a lot, at least for me), it's a slight movie with a plot suitable for the network that brought you She's Too Young and every gymnast biopic featuring a traumatizing uneven bars scene. But that's also Steel Magnolias' charm; though it's a calculated, star-studded weep machine, it's also completely embraceable (and quotable!) on those terms. Here are the reasons it may be The best movie ever.
1. Everyone has a Steel Magnolia spirit animal.
This is so important.

Lifetime has given the green light to a contemporary telemovie remake of the classic 1980 romance/adventure "The Blue Lagoon" at Storyline Entertainment and Peace Out Productions reports Deadline.
The Randal Kleiser-directed original follows two Victorian-era cousins (Christopher Atkins, Brooke Shields) who become shipwrecked and marooned on a tropical island in the South Pacific along with a galley cook (Leo McKern).
After the cook dies the two children grow up together, fall in love and discover sexuality as they survive solely on their resourcefulness.
A sequel was released in 1991 starring Milla Jovovich, while Henry De Vere Stacpoole's original novel was first adapted in 1949 and starred Jean Simmons. Casting on the new 'Lagoon' is already underway with shooting to kick off in Puerto Rico in February.
Lifetime is also behind a "Steel Magnolia" remake featuring an all African-American cast.

Exclusive: Lifetime is heading back to The Blue Lagoon. The cable network has greenlighted a contemporary remake of the 1980 romance/adventure movie starring Brooke Shields, which centered on a boy and a girl marooned on a tropical island, where they grow up together, fall in love and discover sexuality. Neil Meron and Graig Zadan’s Storyline Entertainment and Judith Verno’s Peace Out Prods are producing the film in association with Sony Pictures TV, with Meron, Zadan and Verno executive producing. The project was originally set up at Lifetime in 2004 with Heather Rutman and Matt Heller as writers. Casting is already underway, with filming eyed for a February start in Puerto Rico. The Blue Lagoon movie franchise is known for giving young actresses their big break. The 1980 film made Shields a household name, while the 1991 sequel Return To The Blue Lagoon launched the career of Milla Jovovich. The story of The Blue Lagoon,...

Usually Martina McBride, with her soaring vocals, takes on the slow, enormous ballads like "O Holy Night," which last year during Cma Country Christmas made us a cry a little. But this year, we were delighted to hear her do "Please Come Home for Christmas," which is one of our favorite holiday songs and doesn't get that much play. (We also always mistakenly refer to it as "Bells Will Be Ringing.")
We love the Eagles version, but Martina just nailed this one. We are going to download this post haste. Did you love it as much as we did?
It's on the album "The Country Christmas Collection with Colonial Candles," which now we're fairly interested in buying, because it also features Reba McIntire "I'll Be Home For Christmas", The Band Perry "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town"; Rascal Flatts "Mary Did You Know?"; Eli Young Band "Wonderful Christmastime"; Edens Edge...

As we reported on Tuesday (Oct. 11), "Steel Magnolias" is the latest movie queued up for a remake. This time there's a bit of a twist, though. Lifetime -- who has been stepping up its made-for-tv-movie game lately -- is developing a new version of the 1989 movie that will feature an all-black cast. As Deadline.com reported, the remake will -- like the original -- chronicle the relationships between a group of women living in Louisiana.
The original 1989 version starred Sally Field, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah. But who should star in the new version? We thought we'd do Lifetime a favor making a few casting suggestions before production gets underway.
M'Lynn Eatenton: In the original, Field played the central character -- a matriarch who doesn't just maintain a home and kitchen straight out of the pages of Southern Living, but has to hold together...

Everyone is doing it... why shouldn't we? I caught the news on Twitter where everyone I follow (but particularly Joe & Mark) were sounding off about who they'd like to see in the just announced remake of Steel Magnolias (for Lifetime) which will use an all black cast. Since blacktresses and the unfortunate dearth of roles for them are one of our pet topics here at The Film Experience we can't really let this one go without a discussion.
Clockwise from top left: Hannah (Annelle), Maclaine (Ouiser), Parton (Truvy), Field (M'Lynn), Dukakis (Clairee), and Roberts (Shelby)
The original film, a big hit in 1989 that has had an infinite DVD shelf life with the gays, gave Julia Roberts her first Oscar nomination. It was another Oscar vehicle at the time for Sally Field, a star-laden adaptation of a hit play that opened in November, but the only thing Oscar ended up noticing...

Joshua Scott Jones is getting his life back on track. The male half of country duo Steel Magnolia announced to fans Thursday via the group's website that he had checked into rehab. "God has been on my heart to announce and make public that I have entered a rehabilitation and treatment facility to address issues related to alcohol and substance abuse," Jones wrote. "Hundreds of thousands of people in the world struggle with these battles daily, therefore I am sincerely grateful for all thoughts and prayers at this very poignant juncture in my life and career. I would also like to thank my family, friends, record label and management team for being so supportive and having an active hand in my...

In the only award show that could pit Oscar winner "Black Swan" against "The Roommate," this year's Teen Choice Awards are both out there and predictable. While the categories run the gamut form across 66 categories, from movies to television to sports and fashion, the big faceoffs will be between teen heavyweights Harry Potter and Twilight. Both film series are coming to their conclusion this year, leaving only one more year for them to compete.
"Twilight Saga: Eclipse" received 12 nods, including actor and actress nominations for Robert Pattinson, Taylor Lautner and Kristen Stewart, as well as LipLock nominations for Stewart's kisses with both male leads. They'll be up against a smooch between "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1" stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, who are both up for lead actor awards as well. The awards are decided by online voting, so the most powerful fan-base will prevail.

"Weeds" returns tonight and I've seen most of the first season of that show but not much beyond that. I know that Nancy is one of those characters on TV that people love to hate since her chosen profession keeps driving her and her family further down the road of reprehensible behavior yet they like to maintain some sort of air of superiority. Or at least that was the last I'd heard of the whole mess, has it changed any? Those of you still watching, are you just watching because you find Mary-Louise Parker kind of dreamy? Are you in the habit of mistaking Justin Kirk for the guy who played Sheriff Don Lamb in "Veronica Mars" and thus watching "Weeds" out of misguided loyalty? (I'm not telling you how long it took me to realize they weren't the same guy. Nope.) In any case, please feel free to discuss.
