‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ marked the second chapter in the animated Spider-Verse series led by Miles Morales, currently one of the most beloved animated Spider-Man characters worldwide. With both films receiving critical acclaim and performing well at the box office, it’s no wonder that anticipation for the third (and currently final) installment is high.
During the premiere of ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ Andrew Garfield, who previously portrayed the primary live-action Spider-Man, described the movie as a masterpiece during a screening in London.

‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ was the second installment in the animated Spider-Verse franchise helmed by Miles Morales, currently the most popular animated Spider-Man in the world. Both movies were a critical and box-office success, so it doesn’t surprise us that the third (and so far last installment) in the franchise is highly anticipated as well.

Actress Sydney Sweeney does not seem to be slowing down even though her last release Madame Web was a box office disaster. The actress was part of the ensemble cast in the Sony Spider-Man Universe film along with Dakota Johnson, Isabela Merced, and Celeste O’Connor. Fans trolled the film for its terrible writing, VFX, and campy performances.
However, Sydney Sweeney seemed to have put the trolls behind her as she recently poked fun at her film. Sweeney appeared on Saturday Night Live earlier this week and referred to its failure in her monologue. The actress had joined the show as a host to promote her upcoming horror film Immaculate.

Marvel has hit a new low with the immensely underwhelming performance of Madame Web. The film was ranked lower than Morbius in both ticket sales and critical acclaim. Forgettable characters and lack of action were topped off with subpar performances from the actors making for quite a disaster. A good plot could have helped, but the Dakota Johnson feature lacked that as well. As an extension of the Spider-Man films, Madame Web was a highly anticipated movie.
But it left many disappointed. Moreover, it revealed an arc from the history of Peter Parker’s life- a history that some fans had a hard time stomaching. The film broke a little too many hearts of Marvel fans across the globe—something one wouldn’t expect from a Valentine’s Day release.

“With great power comes great responsibility” might be the most important line in superhero fiction. It crystalizes a theme present in the best superhero stories even before Spider-Man‘s debut in 1962’s Amazing Fantasy #15, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s Superman tales and Bill Parker, and C.C. Beck’s Captain Marvel adventures. The line transforms superhero stories from mere power fantasies to stories about service and care, about empowering others instead of consolidating power for yourself.
So when a member of Las Arañas, Madame Web‘s ill-advised magical natives, tells Cass Webb (Dakota Johnson), “When you take on the responsibility, great power will come,” it’s clear the production team has lost the plot.
Director S.J. Clarkson, who co-wrote the script with Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless, Claire Parker, and certainly a boardroom of IP lawyers, intends the line to break Cass out of her...

In the wake of the highly anticipated release of Madame Web, a crucial puzzle piece has remained unsolved in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Since Sony Pictures struck a groundbreaking deal to integrate Spider-Man into the MCU, the studio has embarked on a journey to establish its franchise featuring related characters.
Madame Web emerges as the latest addition to this cinematic landscape, following in the footsteps of hits like Venom and Morbius.
Dakota Johnson in Madame Web
Like its predecessors, Madame Web delves into a character originally intertwined with Spider-Man in Marvel Comics. However, due to the intricacies of Sony’s agreement with Marvel Studios, the narrative must navigate the conspicuous absence of Peter Parker.
One prevailing fan theory posits that Madame Web‘s cinematic adaptation may have fallen victim to the intricate negotiations between Sony and Marvel over Spider-Man’s rights.

It has been almost eight years since Disney partially gained the rights to live-action Spider-Man media, and for better or worse, through the expansive world-building of the MCU, the character has been redefined for a new generation of audiences ever since. Whatever shortcomings the MCU counterpart of Spider-Man may have simply pale in comparison to the horrendous, downright pathetic track record of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which consists of movies of major and minor Spider-Man-related characters. As a fan of the webhead, if you consider that Morbius (2022) was the lowest this unwelcome franchise could drop to, Madame Web will prove you wrong.
Aside from the ludicrous plotline, cringe-worthy dialogue writing, horrible characterization, poor acting, and generic screenplay, Madame Web suffers from an absolute lack of effort by the makers, who seemingly can’t be bothered to even try to make people care about it. The Sydney Sweeney and Dakota Johnson starrer had been a subject of memes ever since the trailer came out but the film seemed to have gained more hate than Jared Leto’s Morbius.
While Madame Web secured a terrible 14% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film received more hilarious reviews trashing it on TikTok. “Spider-Man Noir”, the Marvel Comics title set in depression-era New York City, starring ‘Peter Parker’ as a ‘Spider-Man’ variant, is being developed as a live-action TV series at Sony:
“…part of the ‘Marvel Noir’ universe (‘Earth-90214’), this alternate version of ‘Spider-Man’ emerges in a version of New York during the ‘Great Depression’.
“While investigating a smuggling ring, ‘Peter Parker’ is bitten by a highly-venomous spider housed inside a spider-god idol. Falling unconscious, Parker has a vision of the spider-god promising him power. He then awakens inside a cocoon and emerges from it, now possessing super-human abilities similar to a spider.
“The feared vigilante ‘The Spider-Man’ wages a one-man war against the criminal underworld in New York City, partly to avenge the deaths of his uncle ‘Ben Parker’ at the hands of ‘Adrian Toomes‘ and his mentor ‘Ben Urich’ on the orders of the city's major crime lord, ‘Norman Osborn’.

The problem with ‘Madame Web’ begins with its title. It appears that the makers had some thoughts around introducing a spider girl/woman universe, which apparently did not translate as expected and were lost for a title to whatever was made. ‘Madame Web’ was conceived in 2019, approved for production in 2020, filmed in 2022, and reportedly underwent reshoots. It probably aimed to expand the ‘Spider’ universe following the success of ‘Venom’ and ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ in 2018.
‘Madame Web’ with its uncertain tone and complex storyline is categorised as a suspense thriller. The film reimagines an elderly clairvoyant character from the comics as a young paramedic portrayed by Dakota Johnson. However, the movie struggles to define its identity.
It starts awkwardly with a poorly executed scene set in 1970s Peru with a pregnant Mary Parker (Emma Roberts) expecting a baby during one of her expeditions, which also doubles up as Cassandra Webb aka...

When Marvel was in dire financial straits in the late 1990s, the company licensed the film rights to Spider-Man to Sony Pictures. When Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" became a gigantic hit in 2002, it was clear Sony would do whatever it takes to keep those rights in-house and never let them revert back to Marvel. There was simply too much money to be made with that character (and the literally 900-plus other Spider-Man adjacent characters they also had the rights to). Sony has since collaborated with Marvel Studios on the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, but until they figure out what the next official Spider-Man adventure is going to be on the big screen, the company is still contractually obligated to release a Spider-Man or Spider-Man adjacent movie every few years to retain those valuable rights.

This Madame Web article contains spoilers.
It’s a big year for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. While Disney powers forward with Deadpool & Wolverine as its lone theatrical release for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony has three Spider-adjacent movies in the form of Kraven the Hunter, Venom 3, and Madame Web. Potential connections between the first two and the Marvel Cinematic Universe remain unclear, whereas Madame Web serves as an unconnected origin story for Dakota Johnson’s Cassandra Webb.
As the name suggests, it’s Cassandra who is at the center of the spandex-clad caper, although she’s not alone. Johnson is joined by Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced as adaptations of various Spider-Woman and Spider-Girl personas, however, this isn’t the only tie to the wider Spider-Verse. Peter Parker himself doesn’t appear, although there’s another major Spidey connection that unfortunately feels completely wasted in the movie.

The popularity and success of the Spider-Verse animated franchise have inspired Sony to introduce shared Spider-people-oriented world-building gimmicks in live-action movies as well, and Madame Web is the first step in that direction. As a part of Sony’s existing Spider-Man Universe (Ssu), which includes movies like Venom, Morbius, and the upcoming Kraven, Madame Web will introduce the titular spider-themed clairvoyant as well as a host of female spider-characters, as the movie aims to become the franchise’s first female superhero ensemble.
However, despite the fact that these characters are prominent members of the Spider-Society, appearing across comics, animated series, and games for a couple of decades, they are relatively obscure to the general audience due to not having a presence in live-action movies yet. This can make enjoying a superhero team-up movie a bit of a challenging affair, and to get rudimentary knowledge about the characters in question,...

Every studio wants its own massive cinematic universe. Though many have tried (never forget the Dark Universe), none have managed to be nearly as successful as the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony's equivalent, the universe formerly known as Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters (or Spumc), is now four movies deep (with at least two more coming this year). All the movies so far have revolved around supporting characters in the "Spider-Man" comics, mostly villains, but that's about to change this weekend.
The latest entry in Sony's Marvel universe is "Madame Web," the first movie that doesn't center on a villain, but instead, focuses on a hero and ally of Spider-Man. A sign of the downfall of civilization, or just the latest proof of superhero fatigue, "Madame Web" follows Cassandra Webb, a paramedic who discovers she has the spider-like ability to see the future. Let's just say your Spidey-Sense better be tingling, because this article contains spoilers for "Madame Web."
It's not really on the same level as Nick Fury welcoming Tony Stark into a much wider world than he ever imagined, but "Madame Web" has now officially entered Sony's Spider-Man Universe. The live-action shared universe may be built entirely around Spider-Man's rogues gallery and assorted supporting characters ... but it doesn't actually feature the famous Web-Crawler himself. Yeah, we're still trying to figure that one out. Whatever the case may be, this oddly cobbled-together franchise made up of both "Venom" movies and the disaster known as "Morbius" now has another ignominious addition to its ranks, and, well, it went about as badly as everyone expected.
But with great power comes great responsibility, as some fictional dead guy you might've heard of once said, and the same certainly applies to how "Madame Web" teases...

While Miles Morales is thriving with an Oscar-winning film and an Oscar-nominated sequel, Peter Parker's future in film is uncertain. After the end of Tom Holland's trilogy, the partnership between Marvel and Sony has been nebulous. Sure, there was that "Morbius" post-credits scene, but things have been very quiet when it comes to the future of Tom Holland as Peter Parker.
It doesn't help that, in the time since "No Way Home," Sony has been making moves in their own universe, from the upcoming "Kraven the Hunter," hopes of another go at "Sinister Six," and even a live-action Miles Morales movie. All of this indicates that Sony wants a big spidey-future that does not depend on Marvel Studios. This includes "Madame Web," the latest movie that seems like it should involve Spider-Man, yet doesn't. The movie focuses on a different spider-powered hero...

Hey “True Believers”, is it time for another trip into the Marvel Universe so early in the new year? Well, since the last adventure of the Ant-Man and the Wasp hit the multiplex almost on the same date last year, then it’s “Avengers Assemble” once more. But with a couple of big exceptions. You see, this isn’t a Marvel Studios production, rather it’s Sony “in association with Marvel”. So, this is another effort by them to “spin-off” Spidey and bring another secondary character from the comics into their very own feature film. Oh, and the others were the “rouges gallery” Aka the bad guys. First, it was Venom, who got a sequel followed by the disastrous Morbius, with Kraven “waiting in the wings”. Ah, but this time it’s another hero so Sony hopes that moviegoers will get tangled up in the strands spun by Madame Web.

Trailers are designed to stir up excitement, the amuse-bouche that whets your appetite for the three-course meal. Occasionally, the oldest marketing trick in the book backfires. When Sony dropped a sneak peek at Madame Web, the newest addition to the company’s roster of Spider-Man–related films and another of their corporate crossovers with the good folks at Marvel Studios, the reaction was … not exactly what they hoped for. The same fans they were hoping to get riled up about a batch of fresh Spidey-adjacent characters began to mock the clip,...

Dakota Johnson is giving audiences something to chew on about Hollywood’s inner workings when she’s not in the Amazon researching spiders with her mom. Speaking with L’Officiel, the Madame Web star got candid about the challenges of movie making and how executives could be stifling creative minds in the streaming arena. Last year, Johnson’s experience with her film Daddio opened her eyes to several problems plaguing the film industry. The film, which also stars Sean Penn, encountered several challenges during production, highlighting the uphill battle of selling a “riskier” idea to studios.
“We made a movie called ‘Daddio ‘that was sold at Telluride to Sony Classics, which was amazing, but it took a lot of fighting to get that made,” Johnson said. “People are just so afraid, and I’m like, ‘Why? What’s going to happen if you do something brave?’ It just feels like nobody...

This article contains spoilers for Ultimate Spider-Man #1.
We all know the story of Peter Parker, right? After the death/disappearance of his parents, Peter was raised by his kindly Aunt May and Uncle Ben, who gave him a happy life, despite the constant bullying he endured at school. After a bite from a radioactive spider gave him superpowers, Peter made one selfish choice that cost the life of his Uncle. As a result, Peter has spent the rest of his life as Spider-Man, living up to Uncle Ben’s teaching that with great power comes great responsibility.
At least, that’s how it is in most universes, including the original Ultimate Universe from the comics. But with a revamped Ultimate Universe returning to Marvel Comics, courtesy of writer Jonathan Hickman, Peter has undergone a significant change.

Marvel’s Madame Web is nearly ready to make its Valentine’s Day debut in theaters, and Sydney Sweeney’s Spider-Woman costume is here to set fans’ hearts (and pants) on fire. Sweeney’s Spider-Woman costume looks fantastic, inspired by the character’s appearance in Marvel Comics. While I question the designer’s choice of headgear, the body suit, complete with silver web lining, is right out of the comics. The grey material along Sweeney’s arms is new but oddly fitting.
Madame Web features Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, Emma Roberts as Mary Parker, and Adam Scott as Ben Parker. Zosia Mamet, Jill Hennessy, Tahar Rahim, Celeste O’Connor, and Mike Epps star as primary cast members.

A trailer for Madame Web, the latest entry in Sony’s divisive live-action Spider-Verse, has finally dropped, giving us a hint of the movie’s intriguing time-travel plot, the young women set to develop spidey powers, and the villain hunting them all – Ezekiel Sims. But another thing that the Madame Web trailer has given us is a first look at who Adam Scott will be playing. His name is technically not uttered in the trailer, but according to IMDb he will be playing an important character in the Spider-Verse – Ben Parker.
Most people know Ben Parker as Uncle Ben, the man who raised Peter Parker alongside his wife May after the death of Peter’s parents. Uncle Ben has been played by Cliff Robertson in the Tobey Maguire-led Spider-Man films and Martin Sheen in the Andrew Garfield-led Amazing Spider-Man movies, but has not yet been shown in the McU-connected Spider-Man movies.

Sydney Sweeney is taking Hollywood by the horns while dodging rumors on her way to the top. Saying it’s challenging to watch people speculate about your life and family online, Sweeney recently cleared the air while speaking with Variety about her determination to rise above the rabble. Her conversation with the outlet occurred three weeks before the SAG-AFTRA strike when many actors entered a battle for better representation, work conditions, and more throughout the entertainment industry. Speaking with Variety, Sweeney confirmed she’s playing Julia Carpenter (aka Spider-Woman) in Sony’s Madame Web, starring Dakota Johnson as the lead heroine.
In addition to confirming her role, Sweeney says she headed to a comic shop shortly after joining Sony/Marvel’s Madame Web. Sweeney loves to read, with some of her favorite books from childhood being the Nancy Drew series and Jeanne DuPrau‘s “The City of Ember” novel.

After Morbius single-handedly sucked the life out of Sony and Marvel’s extended Spider-Verse, the studios could stand to mix things up as the initiative continues to progress. To say this puts pressure on the upcoming film Madame Web is an understatement. In addition to the handicap of arriving in Morbius’s wake, most people have no idea who the movie’s title character is. Thankfully, Madame Web producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is up for the challenge.
Talking with Collider‘s Steve Weintraub about the mysterious Spider-Man-adjacent film, di Bonaventura says that Madame Web is not what people expect from a superhero movie. “It’s a different kind of movie in that universe … It’s almost, in a way, more of a thriller,” said di Bonaventura. Adding, “it’s not an action piece, because, in a way, [Madam Web’s] skill set is not conducive to an action piece.”

Intriguing alt-history about a struggle to capture the dictator’s corpse is ill-served by vague characterisation and feeble action scenes
What if Hitler’s body hadn’t been cremated in Berlin by the SS? That alt-history teaser is the starting point for Ben Parker’s action thriller, which posits a tug of war over the corpse between a Soviet unit escorting it back to Stalin and pro-Nazi partisans hellbent on recovering it. Taking place in the Polish forests in the dying days of the second world war, Burial has an ambitious scope and a rueful sense of war’s barrenness – so it’s a shame it can’t unwrap its formaldehyde-steeped central conceit into something dramatically satisfying.
Brana (Charlotte Vega) is a young intelligence officer tasked with escorting the decomposing Führer back to Moscow, but morale is flagging among her soldiers as they travel through dense woodland stalked by “werewolf” resistance fighters.

Film premiere and headlines spilling from a trio of fests in full swing (Venice), just starting (Telluride) and queued up (Toronto) have indie exhibitors and distributors the most hopeful since Covid hit that a stream of new films could fire up the arthouse market.
Tod Fields’ Cate Blanchett-starrer Tár (debuted to a six-minute standing ovation in Venice), Timothée Chalamet in Luca Guadagnino’s Bones And All (also just screened on the Lido), and Empire of Light with Olivia Colman, set to world premiere at Telluride, and a raft of others are slated for fall theatrical release. A deluge of specialty films from Sundance and Cannes will also move into U.S. cinemas later this month.
“Arthouse theaters are behind where they were in 2019, but I think this fall things will come racing back. These festivals have the goods,” said John Vanco, Gm of New York’s IFC Center.

Nazis, Bolsheviks, and werewolves: oh my. Far from Oz, and on a road that’s paved in genocide rather than yellow bricks, the story that unfolds in “Burial” is likewise the stuff of fairytales. A tall tale about Soviets taking Hitler’s body back to Russia in the waning hours of World War II, the movie by writer/director Ben Parker is elevated by an interesting concept, solid acting, and some stunning cinematography.

Burial
In director Ben Parker's Burial, Harriet (Anna Marshall), an old woman, watches the news reports of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Her quiet Christmas Eve is disturbed when a young violent neo-Nazi breaks into her house, demanding that she gives him what he knows she has.
Instead, she recounts the events from May of 1945, when intelligence officer Brana Vasilyeva (Charlotte Vega), her younger self, led a group of Soviet troops on a mission to transport Hitler's remains to Stalin.
Charlotte Vega in Burial
Transposing the claustrophobic tension of Parker's underwater début feature The Chamber, for the dying days of the Second World War, Vasilyeva and her unit try to fend off attacks from German Werewolves. Burial is a story as much about one woman struggling with a mission that challenges her moral boundaries, as it is a timely reflection on the recurring cycles of toxic ideologies.

Nazi ghouls have figured in plenty of horror movies, whether preserved (1966’s “The Frozen Dead”), newly bioengineered (1978’s “The Boys from Brazil”) or zombiefied (too many to list). Edging close to that terrain, “Burial” revolves around a corpse — the corpse, as far as WWII’s end was concerned — that does not reanimate or otherwise come “back to life,” but poses a grave threat nonetheless.
Not-quite-horror despite its macabre theme and mood, this sophomore directorial feature for Ben Parker is a handsomely produced period thriller that delivers in terms of action and atmospherics, even if his somewhat convoluted story doesn’t maximally pay off. IFC Midnight is releasing the Estonia-shot U.K. production to limited U.S. theaters and on-demand platforms Sept. 2.
A framing device set in 1991 London has elderly Anna disturbed one night by an intruder. No helpless spinster, she soon has the skinhead-looking young perp (David Alexander) cuffed to her radiator.
