IFC is developing five comedy projects for series consideration, including one from exec producer Margaret Cho and another from Funny or Die.
The shows in the running at IFC are Almost Asian, which chronicles the life of a mixed-race millennial in Los Angeles; Annika Erotica, following a young Colorado pastor who harbors a secret passion for writing erotic novels under a pen name; Art Thieves, an adventure comedy following three misfit criminals who fancy themselves to be the Robin Hoods of the art world; Beth, about a happily agoraphobic man and his uneasy journey back to the outside world; and The Middle Passage, a satirical and politically provocative sketch comedy. Aasif Mandvi’s Halal in the Family recently brought an activist twist to the “satirical family sitcom” format, but the Daily Show correspondent’s web series isn’t the only one drawing some laughs from repressed suburban emotions. On the IFC’s Comedy Crib destination, viewers can find The Fergusons, a series of short snippets set at a family dinner table.
In each episode of The Fergusons, the titular family holds a conversation that slowly devolves into a ridiculous outpouring of repressed emotion. In the first installment, the mother (played by Very Mary-Kate’s Elaine Carroll) discusses the sensual touch of her former pottery instructor. This revelation drives her husband (Upright Citizen’s Brigade co-founder and Key & Peele showrunner Ian Roberts) up the wall.
In an e-mail, series creator Mitch Magee (who we’ve discussed a number of times in this space) describes The Fergusons as “a skewed family sitcom.

Magee is seeking funding on Kickstarter for Thank You, Cabbage, a short film about a clairvoyant vegetable and its relationship with a writer on a book tour. No kidding. Magee assures his potential donors that Thank You, Cabbage will be a comedy, but it will have a more serious element not present in his web work. After all, the film's description reads like a mix between a psychological thriller and The Annoying Orange. "Allison Segal is an author about to embark on a three-week tour to promote her memoir," it says. "Unfortunately, the memoir is a fabrication and the prim and tidy persona she created for herself is a lie. Over the three weeks of her tour, Allison unravels,...
