Chicago – The sound of laughter echos on streaming service Tubi, as veteran stand up comic Fritz Coleman presents “Unassisted Living,” his wacky journey with the vagrancies of getting older. The special is currently streaming, and Tubi is a free service to download as an app or to visit at Unassisted Living.
Fritz Coleman was born in Philadelphia, and fell into radio deejaying after a stint in the Navy in 1972. After success in that field, he decided to try his hand at stand up comedy in the big time environs of Los Angeles. After a chance audience member saw him at a L.A. comedy club (described in the Podtalk below), he was hired as a weatherman for Knbc-tv in Los Angeles in the days of personalities and communicators in that position. He only recently retired just short of 40 iconic years on the air.

Chicago – Here we are again, the end of another year, and it’s time to momentarily look back. Thus opens the 10 Best Films Of 2023, the list that represents one soul interacting with the art of cinema. That soul belongs to Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, Wbgr-fm and Wssr-fm.
So begins my list, with such a lofty and third person proclamation. By far, the story of the year is Barbenheimer (the same weekend release of Barbie and Oppenheimer), proving in the digital age that something weird and organic can take hold, and get more people to the theaters, celebrating a true movie event. Kudos to the movie celebrators who did both in one magic day.
I format my 10 Best to reflect the on-air reviews I do weekly on Wbgr-fm and Wssr-fm and New on Missourinet.com. Each of the 10 Best will be in the on-air or audio format for your listening pleasure.

Chicago – Lists are very arbitrary, but the exercise in determining a personal 10 Best Films list of any year is a celebration of what I love, and there ain’t nothing wrong with that. The filtering of experiences that form our opinions is a great gift, and the journey I’ve had with film criticism and reporting has been the greatest of my life.
So begins my* list of the 10 Best Films Of 2022, in a reflective time I guess. There were more films seen this year on the big screen since the pandemic era began, with a shout out to Avatar: The Way Of Water, Top Gun: Maverick and the Superhero genre for really bringing movie fans back to the theaters.
*The Über Critic, Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, Wbgr-fm & Wssr-fm.
For the second year in a row, I’m formatting this 10 Best to reflect the on-air reviews I do weekly on Wbgr-fm and Wssr-fm.

Chicago – It was star power to the max on Saturday, October 13th, 2018, at the 54th Chicago International Film Festival (Ciff) as the cast and director of the new film Widows walked the Red Carpet, including Liam Neeson, Viola Davis and Michelle Rodriguez.
“Widows” is a highly anticipated film for fall, and the story involves the widows of four armed robbers who are killed at a failed heist attempt, only to have those left-behind wives to step in and finish the job. The All-Star cast includes Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Cynthia Erivo, Jacki Weaver, Robert Duvall and Liam Neeson, and director Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”) continues his reputation for delivering unusual, in-depth and quality storytelling. The movie was filmed in Chicago, and was adapted for the screen (with McQueen) by author Gillian Flynn (“Gone Girl”).

Chicago – John Travolta has fulfilled his career legacy of icon status, and he continues to work on projects that highlight his performance abilities. Fresh off his role as real-life Robert Shapiro in “The People Vs. O.J. Simpson,” Travolta takes on another historical figure in his portrayal of mobster John Gotti in the new film “Gotti.”
The film, directed by Kevin Connally (“Entourage”), is a multi-era biography film, based on a memoir by Gotti’s son John Jr. The main story reveals the relationship of a father who lived and died by the mob code, and a son who chose to leave that world behind, in hopes of redeeming himself and the family name.

Chicago – With shooting expected to begin in May 2011 for “The Dark Knight Rises,” Warner Bros. is currently busy scouting filming locations.
