“Abbott Elementary” just might do it. After winning for casting, the ABC hit freshman sitcom could make history in many significant ways. After Quinta Brunson made history by becoming the first Black woman to be nominated for comedy series, acting and writing categories in the same year, she would be only the second Black person ever to win as a producer in the comedy series. The first was Winifred Hervey for “The Golden Girls” back in 1987. Also, forecast to go along with the top category a win for writing (Brunson would be the third Black person after Larry Wilmore for “The Bernie Mac Show” in 2002 and Lena Waithe for “Master of None” in 2017) and Sheryl Lee Ralph in supporting actress (she would be the second Black woman to win the category after Jackee Harry for “227” in 1987).

There will be no Second Coming for The CW's "The Messengers." Due to low ratings, unimpressive reviews and an impossible Friday time period, it was already a foregone conclusion, but now it's also official: "The Messengers" won't be back for a second season. Yes, it's a early for The CW to be prepared to go out on that limb, since only three episodes have aired. And yes, I'm already prepared for several people to talk about networks no longer giving shows time and whatnot. There are, however, realities that exist. "The Messengers" actually premiered with a somewhat respectable 1.195 million viewers and a 0.3 rating among adults 18-49. The second week dropped to 771,000 viewers and a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49. Last week's new episode of "The Messengers" drew 651,000 viewers and did a 0.2 rating among adults 18-49. It did a coveted 0.0 rating and a 0 share among female viewers 12-17. That, apparently, has been...

This week's Teen Wolf plays successfully to its comic strengths. Here's Ron's review of 117...

4.2 117
When Teen Wolf is at its best, it is mining all possible feels out of its situations. “Feels” is a relatively new term coined by the Tumblr generation, which means that basically Teen Wolf successfully replicates the emotional roller-coaster that is the teenage experience. First love, first crush, bromances, the never-ending travails of a transforming body, Teen Wolf handles all these very well indeed, without being too heavy-handed. When the show is heavy-handed, it usually doesn't stay that way for too long. Being a teenager is a horror show, and nobody knows that better than Derek Hale.
Derek Hale, everyone's favorite grouchy mentor and foil to Stiles, was found in a teenage state (played by Ian Nelson) last week by the gang in their Mexican cave. This week he's back in...

TV networks are firming up their fall schedules this week and next, and we have news from The CW as far as which pilots they've picked up and which series won't be returning...
First off, Thank God they've passed on "Bloodlines," the "Supernatural" spinoff that sank like a lead balloon a few weeks ago. They've picked up both "The Messengers" and "iZombie" (and "The Flash" and "Jane the Virgin" for the non-horror crowd).
They've cancelled "The Tomorrow People," a show we watched solely for Mark Pellegrino - hopefully he'll land another series shortly. Also cancelled were “The Carrie Diaries” and “Star-Crossed,” with “The 100,” “Hart of Dixie,” and “Beauty and the Beast” among the latest renewals. (You may recall that "Arrow," "Supernatural," "The Vampire Diaries," "The Originals," and "Reign" all got early pickups.)
Look for an announcement of The CW's full schedule shortly. In the meantime, here's a breakdown of the...

Add The CW to the list of networks doing early housekeeping before next week's Upfronts. On Thursday (May 8) morning, one week before it will announce its full schedule to advertisers, The CW four new series pickups for next season, renewed three established series and, in the process, confirmed that three bubble shows will not be returning next year. Let's take things step-by-step: The four new dramas that will be part of The CW's schedule at some point next year are comic adaptations "The Flash" and "iZombie," plus the soap "Jane the Virgin" and pre-Apocalyptic thriller "The Messengers." The three dramas newly renewed for next season are freshman success "The 100," dramedy "Hart of Dixie" and unintentional dramedy "Beauty and the Beast." And that, in turn, means that "Star-Crossed," "The Carrie Diaries" and "The Tomorrow People" will not be back next season. It also means that "Supernatural: Bloodlines" will not be going to series,...

The CW has given a pilot order to the strange-sounding sci-fi drama "The Messengers." Eoghan O'Donnell ("Teen Wolf") wrote the pilot, which focuses on... Well, it's confusing, so it might be better to just go with the official CW logline. The CW says, "When a mysterious object crashes down to earth, a group of seemingly unconnected strangers die from the energy pulse, but then awaken to learn that they have been deemed responsible for preventing the impending Apocalypse." So it's "Leftovers" meets "Star-Crossed" by way of "The Returned"? Or something? CBS Television Studios and Thunder Road are...
