Exclusive: Universal Pictures has hatched Monster Mash, an original musical film for Matt Stawski to direct, with Will Widger writing the script. Temple Hill Entertainment’s Marty Bowen is producing.
The idea is being kept close to the vest, but it was hatched by Stawski to make his feature directing debut. He is a Grammy nominated music video director who directed Side Effects for Awesomeness TV. Widger’s work includes Damned for Legendary and, Magic The Gathering and Lumberjanes, both for Fox.
John Fischer is spearheading for Temple Hill and he will be exec producer with Stawski. Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Jeyun Munford and Creative Executive Tony Ducret will oversee the project on behalf of the studio.
Stawski is represented by Gersh, Writ Large and Weintraub Tobin; Widger by Kaplan/Perrone and Morris Yorn Barnes.

Things are going well for Boom! Comics at the moment. Having already had its title Lumberjanes set up for adaptation by screenwriter Will Widger at Fox, that studio has now snapped up the rights to Boom! Comic book Imagine Agents, also lining up Academy Award nominee Michael Keaton to produce and star.

20th Century Fox has been contributing to the superhero craze for more than 10 years with their X-Men and Fantastic Four movies. While those franchises won.t be ending anytime soon, the studio is now looking outside the world of superheroes for their next comic book project, and they.ve picked quite a badass property. Boom! The screenplay, by Los Angeles writer and producer Kristina Lauren Anderson, was announced as part of an hour-plus process on Twitter and YouTube this morning.
Each of the 70 screenplays on this 10th annual list was chosen by a group of 250 development executives, agents and other Hollywood insiders as among the year’s best un-produced scripts in a process overseen by Franklin Leonard of http://www.blcklst.com. Anderson’s screenplay received 51 votes.
Other notables in the list include writer/actor/director Kenneth Lonergan with Manchester-By-The-Sea, which is being produced by Matt Damon and Chris Moore. Randall Green had two scripts make the list, The Swimsuit Issue and Cartoon Girl.
