Nat Strand and Kat Chang are two of the most adorably non-dramatic reality show contestants ever. The 17th season of Amazing Race had its fair share of squabbling couples (Nick and Vicki! Chad and Stephanie!) and passive-aggressive travel shenanigans, but the team of doctors made an inspirational portrait of courageous amiability under fire. Throw in the fact that Nat’s a diabetic with a fear of heights, and that vegetarian Kat had to devour a gloriously weird-looking sheep’s head in Norway, and you’re left with only one conclusion: These women deserved to win. Last night’s finale of the seventeenth edition of The Amazing Race was not the most dramatic in series history.
Nat and Kat’s victory, while certainly awesome to see, was unfortunately predictable as their lead grew, impressively, throughout the episode.
What the season lacked in drama in the final leg it more than made up for it with an unusually likable cast. Only a handful of contestants were the kind you actively root against and even those were tamed by The Amazing Race standards. Instead we were treated to a cast without a dominant group, but one that was easy to root for.
Take the final three contestants from last night. Most people were likely rooting for either Nat and Kat or Brook and Claire. Does this mean that Jill and Thomas were not likable? Ok, perhaps they were not our favorites, but they were a very deserving team if they did win,...

Dating couple Nick and Vicki were eliminated in the last episode, leaving home shopping hosts Brook and Claire, dating couple Jill and Thomas and doctors Nat and Kat left standing. The last episode ended in Seoul, South Korea, but Elimination Station has shown the eliminated teams arriving in Los Angeles to welcome the final three teams at the finish line.
The final episode title, which are always taken from something a player says over the course of the episode, is "Hi. I'm sorry. I'm in a race." So who do you think is going to win "Amazing Race" 17 and the $1,000,000 prize? Vote now!

Quitting has its consequences. After opting against finishing the Detour on The Amazing Race last week, Nick DeCarlo and girlfriend Vicki Casciola, both 26, incurred a six-hour penalty, forcing them to miss the first flight to Seoul this week and a shot to make the final three. "I don't think we had any chance of making that flight," Vicki tells TVGuide.com. "We got to the airport a little too late. ... But we were still in good spirits in thinking that you never know what's going to happen." See what else the two have to say about their disastrous penultimate leg, if they did all the tasks this week and why Nick felt "a little Ok" quitting last week.

Last night’s episode of The Amazing Race, “I’m Surrounded by Ninjas” had some fun aspects to it, but because of Nick and Vicki’s huge deficit, was more like the final leg of the Tour de France. Everyone was racing for first place, but no one was worried about being eliminated. Despite the producers best efforts to make it seem that way.
With Nick and Vicki’s easy elimination, we’re left with the final three teams racing for the one million dollar first place prize. Even more interesting is the 66% chance that an all-female team wins The Amazing Race for the first time in seventeen seasons. With little to discuss from last night’s episode, let’s just dive in to a preview of next Sunday’s finale.

The Amazing Race has its final three teams, and they do not include Nick and Vicki, who were left behind and out of the running once they missed a flight. Instead, Jill and Thomas, Brook and Claire, and Nat and Kat are racing for $1 million next Sunday, when Phil Keoghan teased that he'd have an "exciting announcement about next season of The Amazing Race," but we already know that it's this or this--or both.

Nick and Vicki raced well on The Amazing Race, right up until they almost quit, leaving them with a six-hour penalty that was almost impossible to make up. Still, we have fond memories of their time on The Amazing Race. Here's what Nick and Vicki (mostly Vicki) had to say about their journey.
We really enjoyed seeing your journey on The Amazing Race, what was your favorite part?
Vicki: Our favorite part was eating sushi - no I'm kidding! It was definitely when we were in Sweden when we did the dog sleds and the snowmobiling. That was right up our ally. Nick is like the dog whisperer and we both love to snowboard so the snow was great.

Nick & Vicki have been eliminated from The Amazing Race meaning that Jill & Thomas, Brook & Claire and Nat & Kat will battle for the $$1 million prize in next week's finale. The dating couple were the last team to check-in at the pitstop in South Korea. They had started the leg in Hong Kong with a six-hour penalty and had a speedbump to complete and never managed to make up the time on the other teams. This week's leg saw the remaining four teams traveling 1,300 miles from Hong Kong to Seoul before having to drive themselves to a bridge in the Demilitarized Zone near the North Korean border. Nat & Kat were the first to depart for the airport and thought they had a good chance of making the finale unless they made any "big mistakes". Jill & Thomas were next to leave and also though they were contenders to win although Thomas admitted there...

Tonight was actually my own Amazing Race. I flew out of Toronto at 4:00 Et, and arrived in Vancouver at 6:00 Pt. From the airport, to a quick stop at a friend’s house, to my hotel to check in, and a quick dodge out to grab a bite to eat, I had it all planned and ready to be sitting in front of the TV in my hotel room for 8:00 to watch tonight’s episode. It was a close call, but one scraped knee, a scraped elbow, a twisted ankle, and a spectacular pen explosion later…I limped to my hotel couch at 7:57. This is my commitment to these recaps, people!
My Random Thoughts:
- Is there a more redundant instruction when directing the teams to the border between South Korea and North Korea than...

Nick DeCarlo & Vicki Casciola eliminated from "Amazing Race 17" in episode 11. Tonight's show kicked off with scenes from last week's show when Nick and Vicki showed up in last place, but still got to stay in the race due to a non-elimination week. Then the teams had to fly to Seoul,South Korea. Then make their way to a special bridge to get their next clue. Nick and Vicki were way behind the other teams. The other teams left hours before Nick and Vicki. Once the teams got their clue at the bridge, they had to raft down a river. Then take a Humvee to the U.S. Navel Airforce base too get their next clue. Once they arrived, they faced a "Road Block."...

As fans of The Amazing Race know all too well, Nick DeCarlo is not the most caring of boyfriends. In fact, as he proved to girlfriend and Race partner Vicki Casciola last night, he's the least caring of boyfriends. Vicki (crying): "He keeps yelling at me. I can't do anything about it. He's never had asthma so he doesn't know what it feels like." Nick: "Quit crying." That's why this season's Amazing Race is a hit with the medical community. Not because of Vicki's asthma. But because proctologists everywhere are tuning...

Must. Restrain. Myself. I was going to write a post about last night's episode of The Amazing Race ("I Hate Chinese Food") but I'm actually still too angry at contestant Nick to think clearly... and at the producers for keeping this buffoon around another week. Quick recap: after shouting at his asthmatic girlfriend Vicki all season, making her do just about every challenge, and managing to avoid elimination several times thanks to Vicki, Nick decides that he's going to take a nap rather than help Vicki look for a boat registration number in the dark, even though he spent several hours sitting in a chair while Vicki gorged on Chinese food and puked her guts out. Nice boyfriend. Nick had given up and wanted to walk off the race when they opted to take the six-hour penalty for not completing a Detour and simply walked onto the mat. It had to be over for them,...

At the beginning of this week’s episode of The Amazing Race titled “I Hate Chinese Food,” Nick admits in an interview that before Vicki he didn’t care about other people’s feelings, but that she has shown him the errors of such an attitude. He continued by tearing up and commenting on what a blessing she has been for him.
Say what?!?!
All we can hope is that interview occurred after this leg. The way it was shown to us suggests that it was a pre-leg interview, but I really hope not. I prefer to see the interview as something that Nick reflected on after a stressful leg and realized what a jerk he was to his amazingly patient girlfriend.
Perhaps I’m giving him too much credit. However, I really don’t want to watch this guy anymore if he said what he did before this leg...

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 10.
With Chad and Stephanie being eliminated last week, the ‘domineering boyfriend count’ was cut by 33%, as the final four teams headed to Hong Kong for a predictable non-elimination leg. Would Jill and Thomas be able to maintain their huge lead on the other teams, or would there be another airport equalizer? Why is Brook dancing like a fool? And who’s puking over sushi?
My Random Thoughts:
- I had wondered for the past couple of seasons about the off-leg rest periods, and what happens to the teams. In the past, Phil always methodically told us that they had “a mandatory 12-hour rest period that allows the teams to eat, sleep, and mingle”, but there has been no mention of that for a couple of seasons now, just the times that the teams depart the Pit Stop. On last night’s episode of The Amazing Race, “There’s a Lot of Nuts and Bullets,” we were introduced to a new twist on the U-Turn: the Double U-Turn. I wasn’t sure what to anticipate when I first heard about the idea, but after watching the episode I’m confident the change to the U-Turn was a good one.
Previously, if one of the trailing teams was U-Turned, that was the end of their race. Ok, so some teams have been U-Turned and not eliminated in the past. However, if only one team was U-Turned last night, that team would have been eliminated. The teams were too tight and they were too few teams for anyone to make up for having to do both ends of the Roadblock. In the case of last night, Brook and Claire would have been sent home.
Fortunately for Brook and Claire lovers...

Our remaining teams start out flying to Dhaka, Bangladesh. Phil tells us it is the most densely populated city in the world so, naturally, their first clue will be within a big crowded market. Hot, sweaty, fun. In the Sundarban Square Supermarket, they must use a sugar cane press to press out some sugar cane juice for one team member to drink. I wonder what it tastes like? Probably not as good as I think it might.
So, The Amazing Race is debuting the Double U-Turn tonight and Chad and Stephanie want to use it on Nat and Kat (who are starting out last, by the way). Do Stephanie, Vicki, and Jill have some sort of oppressed hairdressers' alliance? It must be working, all three hairdressers are still in the game! Oh, it's because Chad doesn't want to lose to girls.

Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
Or, as I like to say, if the story was a movie, no one would believe it because it’s so improbable.
Isn’t that kind of the case with Chad and Stephanie getting engaged and winning the eighth leg of The Amazing Race on the same day? If The Amazing Race was not a reality television show, we would roll our eyes and waive our hands because it was a lame ending. But, this is reality television and despite some deserved skepticism about how “reality” these shows are sometimes, we’re constantly reassured that nothing is manufactured.
Certainly the moment wasn’t manufactured. There’s almost no way for the producers to get Jill and Thomas to illegally pay a cab to let them follow it to the Pit Stop. However, I’m a bit skeptical about how the editing process went to...

Gary & Mallory have become the latest team to be eliminated from The Amazing Race. The father-and-daughter duo finished bottom at the pitstop in Oman on Sunday night after struggling with directions en route to the first challenge and never managing to make up the time. Nevertheless, the pair said they were "proud" to have shared the experience and enjoyed their time together. The episode had opened as the teams were told to fly more than 4,000 miles from St. Petersburg to Muscat, Oman and find a man who was holding tokens. They immediately headed to a nearby ticket office where Nat & Kat and Brook & Claire nabbed seats on the first flight to Oman, while Gary & Mallory, Jill & Thomas and Nick & Vicki booked a flight that landed two hours later. Chad & Stephanie were missing at this point having missed their pitstart time because they had slept (more)...

Here is Sean Furfaro's recap of The Amazing Race, Episode 8.
Last week I pointed out that Nick and Vicki were not forced to do a Speed Bump. One of the commenters here explained that the reason this happened is because the previous week, in the Piano Detour, apparently they gave the correct answer but were told it was wrong. So they ended up being last, even though they should have arrived at the mat much earlier.
While I understand the logic, I think that it was inexcusable that CBS did not offer an explanation for this situation instead of assuming they could sneak this by their loyal, regular viewers. This was all anyone was talking about last week, and it’s insulting that it wasn’t addressed on the show.
For this week’s episode, the teams were off to Oman. Would the long-awaited proposal from Meathead Chad finally happen?...

The The Amazing Race 17 production error didn't just affect Nick and Vicki, who weren't eliminated and didn't have to perform a speed bump task the next episode, but impacted several teams. (And Nick and Vicki weren't saved arbitrarily; the non-elimination leg was pre-planned.) That explains why the teams all started at the same time and we heard nothing at all about their start times. As I wrote last Monday, there never was a Speed...

The Amazing Race 17 has minor controversy on its hands, as last week's episode ended in a non-elimination for Nick DeCarlo and Vicki Casciola, but the team didn't complete the required punishment, a speed bump task, this episode. Last week’s episode of the Amazing Race featured no real progression in the Race itself since it was a non-elimination leg. Essentially Chad got frustrated at Stephanie, Thomas was condescending to Jill, and Nick and Vicki sucked at anything and everything they tried. Sounds like every other episode so far this season. What would the second leg in St. Petersburg bring?
My Random Thoughts:
- Jill and Thomas started the leg out in first place, and on the obligatory ‘Leaders talking about their great teamwork’ on-camera confessional: Jill declared that “Our main issue is Thomas talking at me and not to me”, while Thomas explained “We work very well together. I hope that continues.“ Yep, they sound like they’re on the same page.

Last week, I ripped episode five of The Amazing Race, calling it boring and too controlled. I pined for the days of multiple forms of travel, difficult challenges and frequent changes to the race standings.
Apparently all I needed to do was ask for a return to the more interesting days of The Amazing Race’s past and we would get that. This week we were treated to a difficult leg filled with drama, second guesses and a dynamic feel to the entire episode. I joked that “Tastes Like a Million Dollars” would not be sent to the Emmy committee.
If “Run Babushka, Run” were submitted for judgment, The Amazing Race would retake the Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition from Top Chef.

Against all odds -- a fundamental misunderstanding of the rules, the inability to locate Ghana on a map, not realizing the Arctic Circle isn't located in Africa -- Nick and Vicki have managed to stay alive on 'The Amazing Race' for five weeks now.
That truly amazing feat deserves a heartfelt congratulations because, although this is the 17th iteration of the CBS reality series, Nick and Vicki have distinguished themselves as the most clueless team to ever appear.

Somewhere after the less than spectacular family edition of The Amazing Race (season 8) the show has become more controlled. Gone are the days of the specific twelve hour rest period at the Pit Stop. No longer do we see teams with one or two hour leads on the competition.
Most of the time the result of these changes has been that teams are bunched closer together making for more drama on the final race to the Pit Stop. What is also possible is what we witnessed last night on “Tastes Like A Million Dollars,” a leg where virtually nothing happens.
During the early seasons the legs were longer and more stretched out. Navigation played a much bigger role in each leg. This created two scenarios. First, if a team had a lead and avoided mistakes, it was very difficult to catch them. The second, however, was that if a team made a mistake,...

This week’s episode of The Amazing Race, “We Should Have Brought Gloves and Butt Pads”, reminded us that competition on the race is a team effort more.
Despite individual challenges such as the Roadblocks, the ability to work with your teammate and know their strengths and weaknesses is as important as your own ability to carry the team.
Sure, sometimes what the race throws at a team and how that plays into their strengths and weaknesses has a large element of luck to it. This week’s Detour challenged teams to cruise down a snow track on a new Tech Sled or complete a tedious native tent build.
As Vicki said, “We’re more of a physical couple than mental” and their experience skiing and riding enabled them to nail the Sled course in one try and pass three teams in the process. Knowing they were a better physical...

I'm actually kind of sad about the outcome of this week's episode of The Amazing Race ("A Kiss Saves the Day"), which took the teams from England to Ghana, where they had to hawk sunglasses in a crowded market, assemble television antenna hookups, and deliver unwieldy coffins through the streets. All while attempting to stay alive during the series' most dangerous taxi rides ever. I have to say that this season of The Amazing Race is definitely clicking with me for a number of reasons. There's a fast-paced quality to the challenges and the episodes themselves (to the point where last night's installment only seemed about a half-hour long) and the casting this season is top-notch. From Eastnor Castle, the teams will fly to Accra, Ghana. They will find their next clue at Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. Jill and Thomas, who won the Express Pass last time, head out first and Jill is ready to prove she can do things. The doctors, Nat and Kat leave second, followed by Gleeks Connor and Jonathan, who wait for Brook and Claire. Mean Girls Katie and Rachel leave next, and accompany the Gleeks and the Home Shopping Hosts. Brook uses her sexuality to find their way to the airport. Why, Brook, why. Gary and Mallory, who are impossible to hate, leave next, followed by Michael and Kevin. The unforgettable Chad and Stephanie leave next, followed by Andie and Jenna. Nick and Vicki, who are just lucky to be here, bring up the rear.
The leads any teams got mean nothing, however, because there's only one flight to Accra, which will even everything out.
