Famke Janssen plays an ex-Hollywood star in this forgettable gothic mystery that could have flown its freak flag a little higher
Crashing rain, a remote countryside mansion, illicit sex, a British-accented Famke Janssen holding a shotgun while riding a horse – one might easily assume that the lurid Netflix thriller Locked In is a four-wines-in blast. At times it threatens to be, usually when at least two of those aforementioned elements are in play, but it’s all tease and no payoff, the heightened silliness of the first act wearing wafer-thin by the last, charmingly farfetched turning into an annoyingly far reach.
Written by Rowan Joffe, whose adaptation of Sj Watson’s enjoyably nutty thriller Before I Go to Sleep handled a similar balance far more effectively, Locked In also feels as if it’s based on an airport-bought page-turner. There are flashbacks, a potentially unreliable narrator, shifting perspectives, a hidden...

After flopping at the box office and landing an unnecessary entry on the shortlist for 2014’s Best Actress Razzies for Nicole Kidman, Before I Go to Sleep arrives on Blu-ray with a bruised reputation. Pulpy, even schlocky at certain moments, director Rowan Joffe’s sophomore directorial feature still manages to be entertaining, a throwback to the kind of methodical studio neo-noirs we used to see more before Hollywood was overrun by the mindless recalibrations of endless superheroes and Michael Bay. With a little luck, it will have a healthy shelf-life, perhaps destined for rediscovery as an underrated guilty pleasure in decades to come.

Final Update Monday, 1:42 p.m.: Halloween offered slim pickings for the new kids on the box office block combing for treats this weekend, though several holdovers did a surprisingly good job at protecting their stash. Bill Murray, Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck, in particular, exercised a solid grip in October’s final weekend.
That weekend went to Ouija, the $5M Blumhouse Prods. chiller that became the first horror film of the year to land at No. 1 — and one of the few fright flicks ever to do it twice. While The Purge: Anarchy and Annabelle gave the genre a much-needed adrenaline shot, neither took the top spot. With a dearth of newcomers on Halloween (which usually carves at least 15% from weekend revenues), the board game adaptation became the de facto choice for audiences determined to get out of the house for something other than Halloween festivities. An intriguing premise quickly takes to the uninspired, as Before I Go to Sleep opts for the safe and predictable in lieu of the challenging and thought-provoking.
The basic outline of this would-be thriller by Rowan Joffe, on a screenplay he adapted from an S.J. Watson novel, is in fact simple. Christine (Nicole Kidman), having suffered some heretofore unknown accident, loses her memory when she wakes up every morning. Her mind cannot hold on to what has recently happened, and so when she rises, she reverts back some 20 years earlier, and is naturally confused and distressed.
It’s a set-up so base yet so ripe with possibilities, especially with an opening that finds Christine questioning her husband, receiving a call from a doctor, and finding a video camera where she has stored personal testimonials to help her future self make sense of things.
I should say ‘apparent’ husband and ‘apparent’ doctor,...

Sleep, My Love: Joffe’s Effective Woman in Peril Thriller
Adapting S.J. Watson’s pulpy novel Before I Go to Sleep for his second feature film (2010’s remake of British noir Brighton Rock, starring Helen Mirren, was his neglected debut), screenwriter cum director Rowan Joffe forges onward in material that seems veritably inveigled with the past. Many may be pleased with the surprisingly tense platitudes Joffe ascends to with this material, though that may be due to the fact that films of this ilk are generally made so shoddily that they fold before the third act. No, Joffe understands a thing or two about fun twists and engaging tension (take his screenplay for the 2007 zombie sequel 28 Weeks Later, for instance), and this sophomore effort feels a bit like those women-in-peril films that were a staple of 90s suburban nightmare cinema.
Christine (Nicole Kidman) awakes in the morning not knowing who or where she is.

Chicago – “Before I Go To Sleep” is a lobotomized amnesiac thriller that sure hopes its audience can’t remember “Memento.” It presents its promising concept as a slow, poorly paced potboiler that is packed with unpleasantness.

This shouldn’t happen with two Oscar winners in the leads. Nicole Kidman is a woman who can’t retain any short term memories, and loses everything after 24 hours. She knows everything up until her 20’s, but everyday she wakes up in a 40 year old’s body and wonders how she got there. She goes into her bathroom to find pictures posted on the wall with helpful post-it notes identifying the name of her husband (Colin Firth). He explains to her who she is, where she is, and what happened to her. The third wheel here is a therapist (Mark Strong) who is secretly treating Kidman and may have ulterior motives for keeping...

If you want to see a terrific killer-husband-with-a-twist movie, I recommend Gone Girl. If you’ve already seen Gone Girl, see it again. If you’re then really hard up for another Gothic melodrama about a married couple’s ongoing hassle with bad karma, there’s Before I Go To Sleep.
Director Rowan Joffe’s lame stab at a romantic psychological thriller, Before I Go To Sleep is little more than a hodgepodge of cliches overly familiar to suspense connoisseurs. Nicole Kidman stars as Christine, a woman assaulted ten years earlier resulting in the type of only-in-the-movies amnesia where she remembers just what has happened that day. Each morning, the previous day’s memories are washed away and her mind has reset to a point just before her injury. She wakes up daily to learn that the handsome stranger in her bed (Colin Firth) is really Ben, her kind-hearted schoolteacher husband of 14 years.

Despite what we learned from "50 First Dates," amnesia is no laughing matter. In the upcoming thriller "Before I Go to Sleep," it's downright terrifying. Nicole Kidman stars as a woman named Christine who wakes up every morning with total memory loss. As per the notes on her bathroom mirror, she has a happy life with a handsome husband named Ben, played by Colin Firth, but there's a deeper, more dangerous mystery at play.
What will happen if Christine finally recalls her memories? What will she find if she begins to keep a visual diary, as recommended by her doctor? Who hurt her, and why, and will it happen again?
Rowan Joffe wrote and directed "Before I Go to Sleep," based on S.J. Watson's best-selling novel of the same name. Mark Strong co-stars as Dr. Nasch.
"Before I Go to Sleep" opens on October 31, 2014.

There's comfort in watching Oscar winners shake off the respect and responsibility of prestige drama to cut loose in genre screamfests. A pressure builds around post-win Best Actors and Best Actresses, a tall order to find projects worthy of their new stature. As history tells us, following your "Monster's Ball" moment with "Catwoman" can be the beginning of the end. But dabbling in cinematic camp isn't the same as accidentally starring in a ill-fated disaster. Nicole Kidman is the queen of high/low-art balance, giving her ridiculous new thriller "Before I Go to Sleep" a kind of cred that isn't born from "Academy Award winner…." Based on the best-selling novel by S.J. Watson, "Before I Go to Sleep" stars Kidman as Christine, a woman (Nicole Kidman) who wakes up every day with a blank memory, the result of a traumatic accident in her past. Think "Memento," or better, "50 First Dates.

Having read (and enjoyed) the book by S.J. Watson and now seeing the filmed adaptation of Before I Go To Sleep (10/31) has gone to Clarius Entertainment, I feel like I'm going to have to pass on the upcoming thriller in which Nicole Kidman stars as a woman who wakes up every day, remembering nothing as a result of a traumatic accident in her past. One day, new terrifying truths emerge that force her to question everyone around her. It's one thing to read the description of the novel and seeing it compared to Christopher Nolan's Memento and then reading the book, but it was never a story that would easily translate to the big screen, at least not in a way that looks as hacky as what Rowan Joffe has done here. amz asin="B004GUSG4M" size="small"When you're reading the novel it doesn't have any of these massive visual flourishes,...

If you haven’t had quite enough duplicitous domesticity with Gone Girl, then you’ve not got long before Hollywood takes another stab. Rowan Joffe’s Before I Go To Sleep might not have the hype that preceded the aforementioned whodunnit, but it’ll likely still appeal to those who dig secrets and lies.
Based on the novel by S.J. Watson, Joffe has assembled quite the starry cast for this mystery adaptation. The film reunites The Railway Man co-stars Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth as a happily married couple. Or are they? Thing is, Kidman’s character suffers anterograde amnesia following a tragic accident, which means she’s unable to retain any memories of herself. Every morning she wakes and must piece together her past via journals that she’s presumably penned and photos she’s presumably snapped. Is her husband the loving, doting man he seems? It looks October is the month for mistrustful marriages. David Fincher's "Gone Girl" presents a mystery where the audience must guess whether the husband or the wife is more loathsome, and coming up in a couple of weeks is "Before I Go To Sleep," in which another picture-perfect couple isn't quite what it seems. Produced by Ridley Scott, directed by Rowan Joffe, and starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong, the thriller centers on a woman who wakes up each day with no memory of who she is. Her doting husband is always by her side, ever helpful, but can he be trusted? What about the doctor who is trying to piece her life back together? It's the stuff of airplane novels (indeed, it's based off a book by S.J. Watson), and either this will be pulpy fun, or something....a little less memorable. "Before I Go To Sleep" arrives on October 31st.

Cinema has long held a fascination with memories, from the different ways they can be manipulated (Inception, Total Recall) to how crucial they can be in defining who we are (Memento, The Bourne Identity). Before I Go to Sleep slots into the latter grouping; As directed by Rowan Joffé it’s a well-performed and solidly engaging thriller, but it won’t be joining the distinguished pantheon the aforementioned films reside in any time soon.
Based on the bestselling novel of the same name by S.J. She is told this and more information about her life every morning by her weary husband Ben (Colin Firth, reuniting with his The Railway Man co-star). She is also called each day by Dr.

Based on the best selling novel by S.J. Watson, Before I Go To Sleep builds a dark psychological thriller around Christine Lucas (Nicole Kidman), a woman suffering from autograde amnesia after a terrible accident, who everyday wakes up with no memory of the past twenty years of her life. Seemingly in the care of her husband Ben (Colin Firth), while secretly been treated by neuropsychologist Dr. Nash (Mark Strong), she slowly starts to unearth her past, and finds there may be no one around her she can trust. Written and directed by Rowan Joffé, there is no denying Before I Go To Sleep grabs you from the opening frame. There is certainly some Hitchcock, with a bit of Mememto too, in it's DNA, and for the first half of the movie the tension is built nicely, as the mystery unfolds and you are kept guessing at every turn. As a narrative device,...

★☆☆☆☆Best summarised as a watered down Memento (2000) aimed firmly at the Richard and Judy's Book Club crowd and based on the hugely successful novel of the same name by S.J. Watson, Rowan Joffe's Before I Go to Sleep (2014) is the sort of weightless literary adaptation that simultaneously irks fans of the source text and baffles those who have chosen to take the film-first route. Starring a scatterbrained Nicole Kidman and a woefully miscast Colin Firth as her doting hubby, with workmanlike yet sadly unremarkable support from Anne-Marie Duff and Mark Strong, the only thing Joffe's Before I Go to Sleep has going in its favour is that it's too brief to really lull you into slumber - despite its best efforts.

Reteamed once again with Colin Firth, her co-star in The Railway Man, Nicole Kidman stars as an amnesia victim whose brain resets back to 13 years ago after each night’s slumber in the decidedly average psychological thriller Before I Go to Sleep. Writer-director Rowan Joffe’s adaptation of S.J. Watson’s bestseller honors the lurid spirit of the page-turner enough to satisfy fans, but he doesn’t transmute the material into something richer and deeper the way, say, Alfred Hitchcock could, despite the film’s many Hitchcockian nods. Which is bad for her, because apparently her husband played by Colin Firth may or may not be who he claims to be, and that could prove dangerous for our confused gal. Plus, Mark Strong is all up in her business and such, and maybe he wants even more than just to be her friend. All of that in director Rowan Joffe’s psychological thriller “Before I Got to Sleep.” Check out a trailer, poster, and some images for the flick below. It kinda looks like Christopher Nolan’s “Memento,” only with fewer tattoos. A taut thriller based on the worldwide best-selling novel by S.J. What if you combined 50 First Dates with Memento? It would look something like Before I Go to Sleep. Based on S.J. Watson's best-selling novel, Nicole Kidman plays a woman who wakes up every morning with total amnesia. And if that's not bad enough, some real psychological-thriller business happened in her past. Colin Firth plays her charming yet seemingly sinister husband. Not sure how a vomiting walrus will come into play.

Earlier this month a trailer hit for the Rowan Joffe thriller Before I Go To Sleep. Joffe was responsible for writing the restrained character study The American, starring George Clooney, and I really dug the deliberate pace of that story. This material is based on a book by S.J. Watson, but it seems to be in the same stylistic vein. This new trailer also gives us a bit of a different vibe as well. Take a look: Oddly enough, I really dig the first trailer a lot more. That one felt...

In the new teaser for Before I Go to Sleep, Nicole Kidman plays a traumatized woman who can’t remember the violent attack she suffered 10 years ago. Her husband (Colin Firth) and doctor (Mark Strong) say they only want to help her recover, but every morning, when she wakes up, her memory of everything is gone. So she starts to document her days, Memento style, so that each day slowly brings her closer to the truth.

The last time Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman shared a screen it was in a solid relationship in The Railway Man. Things are a little less calm this time. Before I Go To Sleep promises enough psychological shenanigans to send even the strongest couple into therapy, and its new poster, a Persona-like effort, gives a flavour of the turmoil beneath the surface. Rowan 'son of Roland' Joffé's second feature, the dark-hued thriller sees Kidman play the amnesiac Christine Lucas. Her burden is to solve a dark riddle, Memento-style, despite being stricken with total amnesia every 24 hours. She's understandably reliant on husband Ben's (Firth) help with her frustrating life. Could Mark Strong's doctor be the man to help them out of the maze? Before I Go To Sleep is based on the bestselling mystery potboiler by first-time author S.J. Watson and Joffé promises to mine golden-age Hollywood traditions in his interpretation.

You never know how or why amnesia will strike in a Hollywood movie. In the case of Christine Lucas, Nicole Kidman’s character in the upcoming thriller Before I Go to Sleep, the lingering effects of a brutal assault ten years ago leave her unable to hold onto new memories for longer than a day—unfortunate, since there seems to be a rather high-stakes conspiracy unfolding around her.

Studio Canal UK have released the first trailer and poster for Before I Go to Sleep, the movie based on the best-selling mystery novel by S.J. Watson. It stars Nicole Kidman as a woman who loses her memory every time she wakes up, and who must solve a dark riddle related to her condition.
Why can’t she retain her memories? Well, when Kidman’s character discovers some terrifying new information, everything she thinks she knows about her life is thrown into question.
Before I Go to Sleep was written and directed by Rowan Joffe, and the Memento-like project looks set to be a very different to his last adaptation, Brighton Rock. Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth star in a psychological thriller called Before I Go To Sleep, and today we have an international trailer for you to watch. The movie is based on the bestselling mystery book by first-time author S.J. Watson, and the story follow an amnesiac, Christine (Kidman), who needs to solve a dark riddle. As she continues her search for answers, she discovers some terrifying new information that throws everything she thinks she knows into question.

We've seen the concept of daily memory loss tackled in different ways with films like 50 First Dates and Memento, and now another story has come along with a similar premise in Before I Go to Sleep. The film is produced by Ridley Scott and based on S.J. Watson's novel of the same name about a woman (Nicole Kidman) who wakes up everyday with no recollection of the day before. But in the UK trailer below, recalling her past is tricky because she learns of an attempted murder on her life, and attempts to unravel the mystery behind it, making her leery of whether or not she can trust her husband (Colin Firth). Watch! Here's the UK trailer for Rowan Joffe's Before I Go to Sleep, originally from Studio Canal UK: Before I Go to Sleep is written directed by Rowan Joffe (Brighton Rock), based on S.J. S.J. Watson's debut novel "Before I Go to Sleep" follows a woman suffering from anterograde amnesia: each day, she wakes up with no idea of who she is and must put together the pieces from a journal she has been keeping. In "Memento," Christopher Nolan's remarkably artful amnesia film, Guy Pearce used Post-it notes, Polaroids and tattoos on his own body to solve a murder. In "Before I Go to Sleep," Christine, the protagonist, tries to find the truth behind the attempt on her own life that caused her amnesia, while being guided (or perhaps manipulated) along the way by her husband and doctor. Rowan Joffe ("Brighton Rock") directed the film adaptation of Watson's novel, due out September 12 in the U.S. The film stars Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong and is produced by Ridley Scott. So yesterday a few of you may have briefly gotten a glimpse at the trailer for Before I Go to Sleep before it was removed, but today we have an official international trailer for the film starring Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Mark Strong along with the first poster for the upcoming thriller. amz asin="B004GUSG4M" size="small"Based on the very good book by S.J. Watson, the film is written and directed by Rowan Joffe (Brighton Rock) and tells the Memento-esque story of a woman (Kidman) who wakes up every day, remembering nothing from the previous day as a result of a traumatic accident in her past. Things begin to come clear as she begins writing in a daily diary, but it soon gets to the point she isn't sure she can even trust her own words. The trailer already shows how the book's plot has been...

Writer/director Rowan Joffe has chosen a distinctly different sort of literary adaptation to follow 2010’s Graham Greene-based Brighton Rock. Before I Go To Sleep is based on the bestselling mystery potboiler by first-time author S.J. Watson, and reunites Nicole Kidman in on-screen matrimony with her Railway Man husband Colin Firth. Their marriage is under rather a different strain this time...Kidman stars as the amnesiac Christine, who must solve a dark riddle despite (with unavoidable shades of Memento) forgetting her progress every 24 hours. She's understandably reliant on Firth's help with her frustrating life, until she discovers some terrifying new information throwing everything she thinks she knows into question. "It's classic noir," Joffe promised Empire a few months ago. "They remind me of a Hitchcock pairing: a tall, dark handsome lead and a beautiful blonde playing psychological cat and mouse!"Mark Strong and Anne-Marie Duff co-star in the film,...

I read S.J. Watson's thriller on which the upcoming movie, Before I Go To Sleep, is based and as much as I enjoyed the book, I have my doubts about a filmed adaptation being able to pull it off. The story is something of a Memento-esque plotline in which Nicole Kidman plays a woman who wakes up every day, remembering nothing from the previous day as a result of a traumatic accident in her past. Things begin to come clear as she begins writing in a daily diary, but it soon gets to the point she isn't sure she can even trust her own words. The film is directed by Rowan Joffe and co-stars Colin Firth and Mark Strong with new indie distributor Clarius Entertainment releasing the film on September 12. Today the first trailer has dropped and it appears instead of writing in a diary, she'll be keeping a video diary in the film,...

In "Memento," Guy Pearce uses Post-it notes, Polaroids and other visual clues to overcome his memory loss to find the truth behind a murder. But maybe all he needed was a good doctor. In the forthcoming "Before I Go To Sleep," Nicole Kidman will also get to the truth behind a crime, thanks to a handy physician, all while trying to manage a condition that sees her memory wiped out every time she goes to bed. Co-starring Colin Firth and Mark Strong, produced by Ridley Scott and based on the best-seller by S.J. Watson (some seriously strong credentials here), the Rowan Joffe- ("Brighton Rock") directed film follows a woman who digs into her attempted murder, while trying to unravel whether she can trust her husband who or may not be who he says he is. It's a premise that could be tricky to land effectively, but we'll let you...

Though The Railway Man didn’t go over so well with critics, Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth are intent on continuing their creative partnership. The pair are currently set to star in period drama Genius, but before that, they’ll be seen on screen together in the thriller Before I Go To Sleep, which we now have our first look at thanks to two photos and a sales poster.
Based on S.J. Watson’s bestselling novel of the same name, the Rowan Joffe-directed film will follow Kidman as a woman who “wakes up each morning with no memory, with her husband (Firth) telling her that she’s suffered a trauma and needs to stay at home. However, when a doctor (Mark Strong) starts helping her put her memories together, the woman discovers her husband may not be who he says he is. “

I've mentioned the upcoming thriller Before I Go To Sleep a couple of times already, once in my list of most anticipated movies of 2014 and again in my article looking at several of the book adaptations coming to the big screen this year. It's not exactly a bromance, but it can easily be said that Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth really like working together. "The Railway Man" just hit theatres, they're already planning to work together in the brewing "Genius," but before that, they've got the thriller "Before I Go To Sleep" coming and the first images and sales posters have arrived. This week I caught three movies in theaters, two I've already reviewed -- The Lego Movie and The Monuments Men -- and the other is Winter's Tale, which I don't think I'm able to review just yet, but I will say I was expecting something terrible and that's not what I got... I'll say more next week when it hits theaters. At home I watched Francois Truffaut's Jules and Jim on Criterion Blu-ray, which I reviewed and only two people, sadly commented... Hopefully more people come to the table with thoughts and opinions when I review Alfred Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondent this coming week. I watched the new Criterion Blu-ray this week as well. Also, I finally saw Paul Thomas Anderson's Hard Eight, which played Sundance and Cannes in '96 before being released in the States in '97, the same year Anderson's Boogie Nights was released. You may have noticed, yesterday's start to my list of this year's most anticipated movies got off to a bit of a cynical start. Having interviewed Mark Strong no less than two months ago for the Oscar nominated Zero Dark Thirty, the talented actor is back in London promoting his latest flick, in the crime thriller Welcome to the Punch, where he plays the lead villain Jacob Sternwood – and we were fortunate to speak him once again.
Upon walking into the room – replacing the departing Eran Creevy, Strong says “now you know why I did the film”, as the enthusiasm shown by the gifted young filmmaker is there for all to see. Strong then proceeds to discuss his delight at working with Creevy, the pros and cons of working from home in London, his upcoming project Before I Go to Sleep with Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth, and why he always seems to be cast as the bad guy.
