“I had a realization that if I knew the world was coming to an end, I wouldn’t want to go traveling or skydiving or running naked through the streets,” Dan Guterman told IndieWire. “I’d want to keep working. I’d want to continue being distracted from the end.”
The result of that epiphany is “Carol & the End of the World,” an animated 10-episode limited series on Netflix starring Martha Kelly as Carol, a woman surrounded by the hedonism of a planet that knows it will end in six months. But Carol (like Guterman) doesn’t want to surf — although she lies to her parents about it to offer them something — or do much of anything beyond quietly sifting through an existential crisis alone in an abandoned Applebee’s.
“So much of what I do is instinctive and unconscious, and it just seemed to me both very funny...

Carol Kohl is sitting on a train. No, she isn’t waiting for Dom Cobb to take her far away, but she is waiting for… something. Her watch is ticking, even though it doesn’t have any hands. The train isn’t moving. She’s completely alone. In an adjacent car, Carol (voiced by Martha Kelly) can see a horde of happy commuters staring back at her. A couple clad in suits of seaweed clink champagne flutes. A scuba diver swims through the air, between balloons floating like jellyfish. A bride raises her glass to toast Carol from across the tracks.
But Carol can only watch, and sit, and wait. Suddenly, her conductor chimes in to say this train is no longer in service. It powers down. The lights go out. The doors open. When Carol gets up to leave, she sees another version of herself sitting by the door.

This Carol & The End of the World review contains no spoilers.
Maybe it’s the lingering effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, or perhaps entertainment creatives just feel like we’re living in the end times, but an influx of apocalyptic programming has rammed its way onto our screens in the last half-decade. The concept of humanity going extinct has always fascinated the world, probably because the topic is ripe for analysis and social commentary. To stand out from the plethora of options in apocalyptic fiction, each show must have a defining trait to keep viewers’ attention.
Netflix’s newest animated option, Carol & The End of the World, has a lot to say about what different types of people would do if faced with their final months on Earth. Whether audiences can comprehend all of it or glean anything novel from the show will probably be determined by each...

Review: What would you do if you had seven months and eighteen days to live? Would you embrace the oncoming apocalypse and spend every waking moment fulfilling your flights of fancy? Or would you become fetal, paralyzed by possibility and consumed by indecision? In Carol & The End of The World, creator/writer Dan Guterman explores numerous reactions and coping mechanisms when faced with the end of days.

Don’t expect a ton of holiday offerings from Netflix next month — along with the digital premiere of Todd Haynes’ May December (12/3), the streamer has the end of the world (in the form of an animated comedy from Dan Guterman) and the end of The Crown on its mind.
But fans of Money Heist (originally Casa de Papel) will get to unwrap a new, Berlin-focused prequel that’s primarily set in Paris. And, as long as we’re there, we can check out a new French crime drama created by Kamel Guemra.

After being publicly fired from the show he created, it seemed Dan Harmon was done with "Community" forever. Rarely, if ever, had a mainstream U.S. television network rehired a volatile showrunner after parting ways with them. Then again, "Community" always had a David and Goliath spirit and a surprising resilience to it, so anything was possible. Still, when NBC and Sony Pictures TV decided to bring Harmon back and hand him the keys to his show once again after an underwhelming fourth season without him, Harmon didn't have time to take a victory lap. Instead, as he relayed to Uproxx in an interview, he had one question: "Who the hell is gonna write the show"?
Because the negotiations to get him back took a little while to iron out, Harmon and his core team felt like they were already behind the eight ball when it came to season 5. "So...

An episode of Rick and Morty showed Rick at his worst yet inspired Elon Musk's Tesla "Sentry Mode."
"How far can a show take one clever, trippy premise? On a less capable series, episodes like Rick and Morty’s “The Ricks Must Be Crazy” could have been a disaster. But in the hands of Dan Harmon, Justin Roiland, and lead writer Dan Guterman (who also wrote “Interdimensional Cable 2”), the story of Morty and Rick going inside the microverse battery of Rick’s car artfully layers joke upon joke as it dives deeper into a series of concentrically smaller universes, but it’s the episode’s B-plot happening back on Earth that had the biggest impact on popular culture."

On some level, I’m still having a hard time believing that Dan Harmon is back running “Community,” and that the show has been as good as it’s been for most of this season. Large entertainment conglomerates are not generally in the business of rehiring idiosyncratic creators whom they have fired, and TV shows that go off the rails as badly as “Community” did in the Harmon-less fourth season rarely return to former levels of glory. But both things have happened. “Community” is again an unpredictable delight on Thursdays at 8 on NBC, and things are so strange at that network that I would not be in the least bit surprised if the phrase “six seasons and a movie” went from an accidental joke in the fake clip show episode from season 2 into a reality. When I was in La last week, I sat down with Harmon to talk at length — as in,...

Community Season 5, Episode 7 “Bondage and Beta Male Sexuality”
Written by Dan Guterman
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs Thursday nights at 8pm Et on NBC
Underneath the slapstick jokes, constant stream of pop culture references, and episode-long cinematic homages, Community is a show about friendship. It’s the simplest concept, often explored in the most intricate, complex ways through the show’s trademark Dinner with Andre and Apollo 13 parodies. “Bondage and Beta Male Sexuality”, on the other hand, is the kind of Community episode mostly forgotten in seasons two through four, a half hour full of damaged characters turning to each other for consolation – and growth, akin to the spiritual successor to season two’s “Mixology Certification”, except with a much stronger focus on three characters (those being Abed, Duncan, and Britta).

Spike Jonze’s philosophical sci-fi love story Her, and Billy Ray’s harrowing true-life hostage saga Captain Phillips earned best original and adapted screenplays, respectively, from the Writers Guild Awards on Saturday.
In the original category, Her was facing its four rivals for the Oscar: American Hustle, Blue Jasmine, Dallas Buyers Club, and Nebraska, so its victory can be seen as a strong harbinger of where the Academy Award could go on March 2. In anecdotal sampling of Academy members, EW’s Prize Fighter has also determined that Her is far and away the front-runner for this category.

Tonight, the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for excellence in film and television for 2013. All eyes were on their top two categories, Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay, and while the former went to Spike Jonze’s incredible Her as expected, the latter went to Billy Ray’s Captain Phillips, which was completely out of the blue.
Her was widely expected to win due to its immense popularity throughout awards season, taking 20 screenplay wins from groups such as the HFPA and Bfca. However, Captain Phillips was a complete surprise given that it had not managed to win a single screenplay award prior to tonight, but as I’ve said before, it was going to be hard to tell which nominee was the favorite given the fact that the disqualified 12 Years a Slave has been the clear frontrunner throughout the season. Well you don't have to tell me twice, after Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash were awarded the USC Libraries Scripter Award on Saturday I got a feeling the Writers Guild would be going the same way, and just that has happened. Last night the WGA awarded The Descendants for Best Adapted Screenplay while also awarding Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris for Best Original Screenplay. As a result I have had to change my Oscar predictions in the Best Adapted Screenplay category as it would appear all heat was on the adaptation of Kaui Hart Hemmings's novel and not on Aaron Sorkin and Steve Zaillian's script for Moneyball. You can see those updated predictions right here. In the Original category I have had Allen's script at the top since the beginning and I see no reason to change that now. Who’s honoring Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart now?
The Academy of Television Arts and Sciences! “The Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” received four Daytime Emmy® Nominations from the Academy, Including:
Outstanding Special Class SpecialOutstanding Special Class WritingOutstanding Achievement in Live & Direct To Tape Sound MixingOutstanding Achievement in Technical Direction/Electronic Camera/Video Control
Well, technically, Jon and Stephen aren’t nominees for the the last two, but are listed as producers, hosts and writers on the Special Class Special and Writing categories. And, coincidentally, Comedy Central’s total number of nominees this year is exactly 4.
Here’s the list of nominated shows in these four categories. I’ve included the nominees for the “Rally” – nice to see Paul Dinello on the lists!

As soon as we thought we could predict the outcome of the Oscars, here comes another surprise! This one's brought to you by the Writers Guild of America. Picked for Best Original Screenplay was Christopher Nolan's "Inception." The director, famously dissed for not getting a Best Director Oscar nomination, may just win the Best Original Screenplay come Oscar night. Oscar front-runner, "The King's Speech" was not nominated because it didn't quality under union rules which prompted Nolan to say during his WGA acceptance award that he looked forward to a time when he could accept the award "without qualification."
That could be the beginning of a great script Mr. Nolan, go write it :happy
For adapted screenplay, I'm happy to report that Aaron Sorkin's fantastic script won! Based on "The Accidental Billionaires" by Ben Mezrich, "The Social Network" was the only film last year that I predicted to win this very category.
