I like discovering new shows featuring gay characters, especially when they are as charming and funny as this one. I think what I enjoyed most about this is that there were no coming out dramas, no one struggling with their sexual identity, no one dealing with homophobia or some such thing. I’m so tired of those topics in gay storytelling that I could scream. So it was refreshing to see a show where being gay wasn’t an issue that must be dealt with and that the characters' sexuality really didn’t matter in the context of the story. On the other hand, there was an issue in the storyline that should have been at least discussed because of the characters' sexuality that the writers chose to ignore. But I’ll get to that.

Blood Relatives
I’m having a problem connecting to this show because despite all the emotional turmoil in the lives of these characters, their reactions seem awfully muted. We finally got some reaction about the loss of his child from Oscar, and I thought the scene where he lamented he’ll probably never have another chance to have a baby was well done. But overall, I don’t get a sense of true loss from him.
And Thomas doesn’t seem to have any sort of reaction to this at all. He and Oscar are supposedly lovers and were planning this new life together with this baby, but they really haven’t discussed what happened. In fact, I really can’t recall any scenes of them interacting as a couple. And that seems unrealistic to me, as if there are beats in the story that are missing.

As first reported earlier this year, Heather (Cheryl Fergison) will soon meet a tragic end as Ben (Joshua Pascoe) turns violent at her flat, believing that she's responsible for Dci Marsden discovering that he lied about Phil and Stella. Heather's final scene sees Ben lash out at her in a moment of fear and desperation, picking up a picture frame and hitting her hard over the side of the head with it. As Ben and Jay (Jamie Borthwick) watch on in horror, the mum-of-one then falls backwards, hits her head on her kitchen worktop and is left lying dead on the floor. When Phil stumbles upon the disturbing scene after being released from prison, he decides that he has to protect his twisted son and goes all-out to...

Hollyoaks
Well, it looks like Callum and George are going to be just friends, at least that’s what I’m forecasting after weeks of wondering. And that’s fine. Romance would have been nice, but I like them both, and I always enjoy strong friendships between gay men and straight men. But I do hope that the show eventually gives George a love interest. Though as I said before, this is Hollyoaks,so I’d be surprised if they didn’t. I did think the scenes of the guys cruising Callum in the gay club were cute. He’s the kind of guy who would definitely attract attention.
Meanwhile, as for Brendan, I liked his scenes with Cheryl and especially with Darren, even if Brendan suddenly hanging out with Darren makes little sense given they’ve said about two words to each other since Brendan arrived in town.
