- He studied mathematics and physics at Utrecht University and received a master's degree. After fulfilling his military service obligation, he returned to Utrecht, where he received his PhD. He later became a member of the faculty, where he supervised the work of 't Hooft.
- He was a theoretical physicist who made major contributions to the standard model of particle physics. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1999. His co-laureate was Gerardus 't Hooft.
- He served on the physics faculty at the University of Michigan from 1981 to 1997.
