2023 has been a mixed bag of a year for Indian cinema. There were some great highs, followed by unexpected lows. There have been some interesting blockbusters that surprised the audience, while many went below the radar. This is, however, a list of films we thoroughly loved and enjoyed. There are films in several languages that we believe could benefit those who love watching Indian mainstream and regional films.
Pathaan (Hindi)
Directed by Siddharth Anand, Pathaan marked the return of the blockbuster machine Shah Rukh Khan, with people flocking to the theater to watch his larger-than-life persona on screen. Shah Rukh Khan delivered one of the biggest hits of the year, and 2023 could not have received a better start. Despite its questionable storytelling and direction, the movie primarily worked for its star-powered cast and presented a villain that was not a caricature like the stereotypical negative characters we watch in other commercial films.

ReviewThis is a film that will provoke many questions in the viewer, all the more because Aishwarya draws you so thoroughly into the world of her character.Courtesy/FilmPosterDreamWorkPicturesFarhana, a young married Muslim woman, defies a conservative father to start work at a call centre. Her father and husband make little money from the tiny shoe shop they own in the busy bylanes of Triplicane in Chennai. Farhana’s job will make life easier, but her father doesn’t believe in women working outside the home. Her husband Karim, on the other hand, is a soft-spoken, supportive presence, as Farhana steps into a corporate world dazzlingly new to her. She does well on the job, discovering exhilarating new independence. These are rare portrayals in Kollywood or any other Indian cinema industry—so there is much that director Nelson Venkatesan gets right in Farhana, starring Aishwarya Rajesh as the titular character.

KollywoodVetrimaaran’s critically acclaimed film Visaranai (2015) was probably the first Tamil film to look at custodial violence in unflinching detail, a change from narratives that routinely glorified it.In Vetrimaaran’s hard-hitting film Viduthalai Part 1, released on March 31, a senior police officer calmly asks for cutting pliers. He then proceeds to pull out the nails of the Adivasi man in his custody, asking him for information that the latter says he doesn’t have. When he doesn’t get what he wants, the officer asks for the man’s daughter-in-law to be brought into the room and stripped. Even as the audience finds it difficult to process the extensive scenes of custodial torture in Viduthalai, the state of Tamil Nadu is witnessing a real life case that mirrors the brutality that was shown on screen. Just a few days before Viduthalai came out, three men alleged on video that...

Vetrimaaran’s “Viduthalai” is all set to become a saga, with audiences eagerly waiting for the sequel to finish the story of people involved in these lucrative police tales. One of the reasons why this film works is that the characters are fleshed out like real policemen who not only lead a harsh life but must succumb to corruption to make sure they lead a sustainable life away from trouble. Here trouble comes in the form of an extremist group called “Makkal Padai,” where the group has fought for the people so that they are not being taken advantage of. The cops also face problems in the form of bureaucracy and the politics of whether/when to do the right thing.
Kumaresan, the newly appointed police constable, joins Operation Ghost Hunt, a statewide search for Perumal, the leader of the group “Makkal Padai” who is now the most wanted man in Tamil Nadu.

Vetrimaaran is a fantastic director, and “Viduthalai” again proved that there is no better storyteller in the socio-political drama genre than him. The pain faced by the oppressed and the police taking advantage, knowing there would be no one that could save them from here on; the sort of power struggle that goes on between the authorities, which is the police and the ministers in the context of this film; and the villagers who end up facing the brunt of the conflict between the extremists and the government. The villagers are not asked about what they want; it is just assumed they would be culprits here.
By the end of the film “Viduthalai,” we get to see Kumaresan finally finding a way to nab Perumal. Kumaresan knew catching hold of this man would mean the women at the police camp would not be tortured for information about him. Perumal, on the other hand,...

Vetrimaaran is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to telling socio-political stories through his stories, screenplays, and narratives. Nobody in recent times in the Tamil cinema space has come close to Vetrimaaran when it comes to making films that are a perfect mix of commercial cinema and soul-stirring, taboo topics that nobody in the past has managed to even speak about through this medium called film. Technically too, his films always stood out, and the last big theatrical release this man had was “Asuran,” starring Dhanush and Manju Warrier. Vetrimaaran’s current outing, “Viduthalai,” which means liberation, is all about understanding the balance between the life that police officers live and the extremists’ group in the state, which is fighting hard for the people of their community so that they thrive and their demands are met.

ReviewVetrimaaran makes several noteworthy cinematic choices, but as a director who seems intent on being taken as a serious political commentator, his own politics still leaves a lot to be desired.Deep in a mountainous jungle, an armed people’s movement is at war with the police. The state apparatus is scrambling to identify the mysterious leader of this movement — Makkal Padai (People’s Army) — who goes by the moniker Vaathiyar. The authorities don’t even know what he looks like. A young police constable (PC) is transferred to one of these remote outposts, setting him on a collision course with powerful men. Director Vetrimaaran’s Viduthalai - Part 1 seems set to tell a gritty political tale led by an actor few would have expected in such a serious and complex role. When the cast for Viduthalai was announced, most Tamil movie watchers were surprised to see Soori in the lead.

ReviewIt’s a shame that Dhanush’s entry into the Telugu movie industry has to be marked by a film of such mediocrity and confused politics.Courtesy/SunTvOn the surface level, Vaathi (released bilingually as Sir in Telugu) appears to be about the right to education for all. Dhanush plays Bala, a maths teacher dispatched to a small town on the Andhra-Tamil Nadu border to teach in a government school. Bala is a poor imitation of the Kollywood swagger of teacher characters such as Kamal Haasan’s Selvam 0r Vijay’s Jd. He immediately becomes a hero among his new students. He’s furiously opposed to privatisation in education and spends the movie locking horns with Tirupathi (a criminally misused Samuthirakani) to ensure children from low-income families are able to study. The film even takes a sly dig at Neet via the now scrapped Tnpcee. All good things. So, one...

OpinionTamil cinema has persistently been far more vocal about political issues than its Hindi counterpart. Yet, a closer look at Kollywood shines light on the bigotry and ignorance of the industry.Bharathy SingaravelA speech by popular Tamil filmmaker Vetrimaaran, emphasising the need for political awareness in cinema, went viral on October 1. “Our identities are being taken from us very quickly, such as by dressing Thiruvalluvar’s image in saffron or depicting Raja Raja Cholan as a Hindu king,” the director — known for hit movies such as Asuran and Vada Chennai — had said, while speaking at a birthday event for MP and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (Vck) leader Thol. In what appeared to be a veiled reference to Mani Ratnam’s screen adaptation of Kalki’s historical fiction novel Ponniyin Selvan, he also pointed out that such erasures were happening in Tamil cinema too. Review Excessive depiction of abuse, high-strung sentimental moments and poorly written characters, undermines Vikram Prabhu’s Taanakkaran.Bharathy Singaravelvikram prabhu/twitterTaanakkaran is set in a police recruits school (Prs) somewhere in Tirunelveli. These recruitment schools have parade competitions at the end of their training—something so fiercely fought over, that it lays the bedrock for the brutality bred into the police. This is the story the film attempts to tell us. Before the story begins, we are given a quick animated overview of the police department’s formation, mainly to remind us that it is an extension of colonial power. These animation sequences with voice overs are becoming a bit overused these days in Tamil cinema. Maybe there are other storytelling methods to convey the same information. That issue aside, Taanakkaran in this sequence, refers to the training of Indian recruits during colonial times. They competed with each other to move up within the system,...
