The Writers Guild of America has denied a waiver to allow the Tony Awards to be televised on CBS and Paramount+ on June 11, according to a Friday report in The Hollywood Reporter, which means the show might not be televised on CBS/Paramount+ as planned, or even happen at all.
“The Tony Awards is the biggest commercial for the industry at large, and for a show like mine, which is unbranded and just at the stage where we are finally starting to see some lifeblood, it would be devastating to not be able to be part of this,” Mike Bosner, the lead producer of “Shucked,” one of the five shows nominated for Best New Musical, told The New York Times on Friday.
TheWrap has reached out to the Tony Awards PR company, as well as WGA, CBS and Paramount+ for comment.

Jagged Little Pill, the Broadway musical of Alanis Morissette songs, will not reopen at the Broadhurst Theater following its current Covid suspension, producers announced tonight.
With the announcement, the Tony- and Grammy Award-winning musical becomes the first Broadway casualty of December’s Omicron surge in New York City.
In a statement, producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price said tonight that “the drastic turn of events this week with the rapid spread of the Omicron variant has, once again, changed everything. We are dismayed by what appears to be another substantial public health crisis, and – due to the detection of multiple positive Covid-19 cases within the company – need to prioritize the health and safety of the cast, crew, and entire team working on Jagged Little Pill. In light of the extreme uncertainty ahead of us this winter, and forced to choose between continuing performances and protecting our company,...

Update Throughout Actors’ Equity Association has hired New York labor attorney Micah Wissinger to conduct the independent review of the workplace at Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill as a result of last week’s claims by non-binary former cast member Nora Schell that they had been intimidated into postponing medical attention during the production’s preview period.
In a statement today, Equity said that Wissinger, a partner at Levy Ratner, has extensive experience in labor and employment law, “including conducting workplace investigations and representing transgender and gender non-conforming individuals.”
“As a transgender man, Wissinger brings relevant personal experience in addition to his extensive professional qualifications to the investigation,” Equity said. “We trust Mr. Wissinger to conduct a thorough and fair examination of the experiences of Nora Schell and other company members at the show.”

Lauren Patten called attention to the conversations around Jagged Little Pill‘s gender non-conforming representation, thanking her nonbinary and trans colleagues while accepting the award for best featured actress in a musical at Sunday’s 74th Tony Awards.
“It is such a joy to finally be able to celebrate all of these phenomenal artists in this room after this long, long pause. It is also a strange time for awards. We are in the middle of a reckoning in our industry. And first and foremost I want to thank my trans and nonbinary friends and colleagues who have engaged with me in difficult conversations, that have joined me in dialogue about my character Jo,” Patten said.
“I believe that the future for the change we need to see on Broadway comes from these kinds of conversations that are full of honesty and empathy and respect for our shared humanity. And...

Two former cast members of Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill, including Tony-nominated featured actress Celia Rose Gooding, released statements today accusing the production of doing, as Gooding writes, “harm to the trans and non-binary community both onstage and off.”
Nora Schell, a Black non-binary actor who made their Broadway debut in the chorus and other roles as an original company member of the Alanis Morissette musical and who will not return to the show when it reopens on Oct. 21, tweeted a statement today outlining what they say were repeated instances when they were “intimidated, coerced, and forced by multiple higher ups to put off critical and necessary surgery to remove growths from my vagina that were making me anemic.”
Schell writes that during previews of the musical in 2019, they were told by their gynecologist that surgery for Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome was needed, but that the news was either ignored or...

Update, with Lauren Patten statements When Boston area audiences saw a pre-Broadway performance of the Alanis Morissette musical Jagged Little Pill in 2018, they saw actor Lauren Patten sing a powerful, showstopping rendition of the hit song “You Oughta Know,” with the young performer delivering the blistering number as a lovestruck – and gender non-conforming – teenager.
When Broadway audiences saw the same show in 2019 – which reopens from the Covid pandemic shutdown on Oct. 21 at the Broadhurst Theatre – audiences again saw the scene-stealing, soon-to-be-Tony-nominated Patten in the role, but references to the character’s being nonbinary were all but gone. And on social media, Patten, a cisgender woman, had shifted from referring to her Jagged character Jo as “they” or “them” to “she” or “her.”
When discussing the matter in public, producers insisted that the character had never been written or conceived as nonbinary, describing the role more along the lines of a...

Jagged Little Pill, the Tony Award nominated musical inspired by the Alanis Morissette album, will reopen at Broadway’s Broadhurst Theatre Thursday, Oct. 21, producers Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price announced today. Tickets are on sale now.
“Jagged Little Pill is about the complicated and harrowing effects of what it means to be disconnected from one another – and the beautiful, exhilarating healing that can happen when we rally together in those tough moments, to become beacons of vision and empathy for one another,” said Morissette in a statement. “That has never felt more real than during this tumultuous past year, and I could not be more thrilled to glimpse the light at the end of this long tunnel that the live arts community has endured.”
Morissette continued, “This amazing family of Broadway artists will be raising their voices together again on stage this fall – and it will...

Daniel Fish’s reimagined Oklahoma!, nominated for eight Tony Award nominations, will launch a North American tour in the fall of 2020 at the Civic Center Music Hall in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Broadway’s Jagged Little Pill, the new musical based on Alanis Morissette’s classic ’90s album, will begin previews Sunday, Nov. 3 at the Broadhurst Theatre, with an opening night set for Thursday, December 5, producers announced today.
The previously announced production features lyrics by Morissette and music by Morissette and Glen Ballard, with direction by Tony Award winner Diane Paulus (Waitress) and an original story by Diablo Cody (Juno). Vivek J. Tiwary, Arvind Ethan David and Eva Price produce.
Inspired by the themes of the album, Jagged Little Pill focuses on a “picture-perfect suburban family” named the Healys. When cracks begin to show, the family must choose between maintaining the status quo or facing harsh truths about themselves, their community, and the world around them, according to the official synopsis.
Songs include such Morissette hits as “You Oughta Know,” “Head Over Feet,” “Hand In My Pocket,” and “Ironic”, plus new songs written for the show.

The acclaimed production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma! that sold out Brooklyn’s St. Ann’s Warehouse this fall will transfer to Broadway in March, producer Eva Price announced today.
The announcement immediately upends any Tony Award predictions – the St. Ann’s limited-run Off Broadway production was praised by critics and the Broadway staging will almost certainly be an awards contender.
Directed by Daniel Fish, Oklahoma! will begin previews at Broadway’s Circle in the Square Theatre on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, with an official opening on Sunday, April 7. The limited engagement will run through Sunday, Sept. 1.
“What an incredible moment to be producing on Broadway, in the middle of this wonderfully eclectic season spurred by an audience that is hungry for bold, daring work,” Price said. “Daniel Fish’s timeless and timely revival of this classic speaks so vividly to the place we as Americans are living in today.”
