Five years after Dave Grohl performed his prog-rock epic “Play” live for the first (and only) time, a video of the complete and extended performance of the song has been revealed.
In December 2018, Grohl recruited an all-star lineup including Alain Johannes, Greg Kurstin, Chris Chaney, Barrett Jones, and more to give “Play” a one-night-only airing at the annual Christmas Jam benefit concert in Asheville thrown by Gov’t Mule’s Warren Haynes.

Dave Grohl has unleashed the only live performance of his epic 23-minute, instrumental “Play,” which extends the song to a whopping 36 minutes.
Recorded during Warren Haynes’ 30th Annual Christmas Jam in 2018, the live version expands the breadth of the instrumental as Grohl is accompanied by Greg Kurstin on keyboards, Chris Chaney on bass, Drew Hester on percussion, and guitarists Jason Falkner, Alain Johannes, and Barrett Jones. However, it’s Asheville-based busker Abby the Spoon Lady who really steals the show. Watch the performance below.
“Play” was originally composed and performed entirely with Grohl on every instrument. The process of its recording was captured in a two-part documentary of the same name, released in 2018.
The track will appear on The Benefit Concert Volume 20, a collection of performances recorded on December 7th and 8th, 2018 in Asheville, North Carolina. Other featured artists include Eric Church, Joe Bonamassa, Gov’t Mule, Mike Gordon, Marco Benevento,...

It was up to Garth Brooks to give the near-sellout crowd in Nashville what they wanted to hear most: Randy Travis’ voice.
Brooks was the final singer among more than 30 who came to honor the country legend on Wednesday night with a tribute concert at Bridgestone Arena.

A stream of country stars took the stage Wednesday night to sing their thanks to songwriting legend Kris Kristofferson, but no one was more grateful than Eric Church, who said a Kristofferson song "saved my life." Starting out, "I had a rough time in Nashville," Church told the thousands who'd packed Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, "and I played the game where, if I get told 'no' one more time, I'm outta here." That "one more time" came during a meeting with a publishing rep, who listened to Church play "maybe half a song" and bluntly told him, "I don't know where...

Eric Church has had great success presenting himself as a modern-day outlaw, someone who operates outside of Nashville’s mainstream. This is despite the fact that he records for a major label, regularly charts on the radio, and is a mainstay on the awards show circuit. He can sell that notion because his music, like that of compatriot Jamey Johnson, doesn’t sound like everything else on country radio. While he may sing about girls and cars, it’s seldom from the same cookie-cutter perspective of many of his colleagues…his arrangements alone show he’s aiming high. He isn’t constrained by any of the cliched...

Nashville, Tenn. -- A yearlong celebration of Johnny Cash's legacy will come to an end this week with the issue of a new postal stamp and free public concert.
The new Johnny Cash Forever stamp goes on sale Wednesday and to celebrate Cash's son, John Carter Cash, and several friends and family members will gather at Ryman Auditorium. The stamp is based around a promotional shot for the 1963 album "Ring of Fire: The Best of Johnny Cash." To Cash it looks like a 45 or 78 Rpm record cover and is unlike the usual offerings – matching his father's legacy.
"It just truly embodies my father's spirit, who he was," Cash said. "It's different. That's one thing: It stands out to me as being unique. It's very commanding when you see the stamp."

Nashville, Tenn. -- America loves its outlaws, and few are as admired and lionized as Willie Nelson.

And the winners of the 2013 Grammy Awards are ... the men. Male artists dominate the nominees in the top categories for the 55th Annual Grammy Awards, announced Wednesday night (Dec. 5).
Topping the list with six nominations each are Jay-z, Kanye West, Fun., Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.
Taylor Swift, whose new album "Red" won't be eligible for consideration until 2014, earned a single nod for Record of the Year with her hit breakup single "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together."
The biggest snubs are teen heartthrobs Justin Bieber and One Direction, who cleaned up at the American Music Awards, and Rihanna. The "Diamonds" singer earned a trio of nods (pop solo performance for her "Where Have You Been," rap-sung collaboration nomination with Jay-z for "Talk That Talk" and short-form music video for "We Found Love") but is Mia from the major categories.

-- Jamey Johnson, "Living For A Song: A Tribute To Hank Cochran" (Mercury)
Jamey Johnson set out to honor one of the most successful songwriters in country music history with "Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran." He does that – and much more.
He also honors other heroes and favorite vocalists, by inviting them to participate. Pairing with such legendary figures as Merle Haggard, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Ray Price and George Strait, Johnson shares beloved songs with many of the distinctive voices that shaped his ideas of what country music can achieve.
In a broader sense, he also honors the highest qualities of country music – not just its great songs and its great voices, but also how sublime an old-school Nashville studio recording can sound when done with care by outstanding musicians.
Co-producing with Buddy Cannon and Dale Dodson, Johnson creates a traditional country masterpiece by taking classic songs,...

"American Idol" has struggled to produce hit rock and R&B stars lately, but the show clearly has a knack for pumping out country acts. Just look at the winner's circle for Wednesday night's Cmt Music Awards ceremony, where "Idol" winner Carrie Underwood took home two major honors and Scotty McCreery went home with some hardware as well.
Underwood, who also performed on the broadcast hosted by Toby Keith and actress Kristen Bell, snagged her third Video of the Year honor for the "Good Girl" clip, and hit the podium once again for Collaborative Video of the Year for her work on the "Rescue Me" video with Brad Paisley.

At the 2012 Cmt Awards, Willie Nelson took to the stage with a cavalcade of current country stars (not that Willie isn't still a star, but he's a legend). Willie was flanked by host Toby Keith, Darius Rucker, Zac Brown Band and Jamey Johnson.
The quintet of stars sang "Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die," which Nelson has recently been closing his live shows with. The song usually features rapper (and fellow marijuana enthusiast) Snoop Dogg, but he was unfortunately not in attendance at the Cmt Awards.
"Roll Me Up and Smoke Me" is off Nelson's new album "Heroes," which is just the latest of Nelson's over 60 albums he has released in the 50 years he's been making music. "Heroes" dropped May 15 and peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Top Country Albums charts. We'll post video of the performance just as soon as we have it.

Nashville, Tenn. — Presidential elections are usually serious business, but President Barack Obama and likely Republican nominee Mitt Romney are taking a little time for laughs during the Cmt Music Awards on Wednesday.
Obama and Romney have taped video segments that will appear as part of the country music award show's opening segment. Cmt President Brian Philips said in a statement that each is "in on the joke."
"They're each great sports," he said.
The fun kicks off at 8 p.m. Edt from Nashville's Bridgestone Arena on Cmt with hosts Toby Keith and Kristen Bell. A host of celebrities from across the entertainment dial are scheduled to appear as well, but they'll be battling for attention with the focus on Obama and Romney.
Chances are Carrie Underwood and Taylor Swift will take over the spotlight by the end of the evening, though. It doesn't take a statistician to sort out the...

Austin, Texas -- When Snoop Dogg passed through Willie Nelson's neck of the woods during South By Southwest in March, he took some time to pay tribute to his unlikely friend.
He regaled reporters with mostly Nsfw stories about time the pair spent together in Amsterdam, sharing their mutual love of music, marijuana and fried chicken. The always lighthearted Snoop also got serious when talking about his friendship with Nelson and the 79-year-old singer's unique role as a musical ambassador.
"When I first met him you would think he was a hip-hop artist because he showed love to me as if I was in his world and I never made country music or none of that, but he understood who I was," Snoop said. "And it drove me to make country music. I made a couple of country records and was a part of his album and went to...

Leave it Willie Nelson to proclaim "Roll me up and smoke me when I die" at the start of his latest track, "Roll Me Up," featuring famous stoner Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson and Jamey Johnson. Nelson conveniently released the song on 4/20, the unofficial marijuana holiday.
O.G. stoner Nelson croons along with Snoop on the country track, which features the West Coast rapper using his twangy voice. "Call my friends and tell them there's a party, come on by," he sings, "Just roll me up and smoke me when I die."
For an extra gimmicky kick, fans can head on over to Willie Nelson's website to listen to the track and watch a digital blunt burn out.
Snoop and Nelson aren't the only ones to have mastered the art of crafting the perfect 4/20 song. Jimi Hendrix released "Purple Haze," every stoner's go-to track, in 1967, and nearly 10 years later, in...

Eric Church has been grouped into a movement of country singers with outlaw instincts and pop smarts, best exemplified by Jamey Johnson and his terrific 2010 chart-topper The Guitar Song. But where Johnson follows the example of Waylon Jennings, a hard-living romantic who embodied outlaw mythology as well as its inherent loneliness and fatalism, Church models himself after Hank Williams, Jr., playing good-time Southern rock and preferring to chase the blues away rather than revel in them. “No need to complicate it, I’m a simple man, all you gotta do is put a drink in my hand,” Church sings ...

Saturday (Aug. 13), country legend Willie Nelson and a host of other artists will take to the stage in Kansas City, Ks at the Livestrong Sporting Park to put on Farm Aid, the longest running benefit concert series in America. It has raised over $39 million to help family farmers keep their farms and also teaching millions of people about the Good Food movement.
Farm Aid founder Nelson (pictured above at last year's Farm Aid with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler) tells the Kansas City Star, "We're still in a desperate situation with our farmers and the land and the big corporations taking over farms and ruining the soil with chemicals and pesticides. It's been going on for so long. I think the biggest problem is with politicians who either don't know about it or don't care. At one time there were more than 8 million family farms in this country. We're down to less than 2 million.
