Ukrainian-born, Miami-based producer, songwriter, composer, and filmmaker Rostislav Vaynshtok (Terrifier 2), better known as Slavvy, has officially signed on to score All My Friends Are Dead, the upcoming slasher film from Saw IV-3D writer and The Collector director Marcus Dunstan.
All My Friends Are Dead follows a group of close college friends who get a steal on a killer Airbnb for the biggest music festival of the year. A weekend of partying quickly takes a turn for the worst as members of the group are murdered one by one. They soon discover that each one of their deaths directly corresponds to one of the seven deadly sins.
The film, which stars stars Jojo Siwa and Jade Pettyjohn, is currently in post-production.

How do you make a big idea literally sound small? That was one of the biggest conundrums that faced the worldbuilding team behind the part live-action, part animated faux-documentary feature, “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On.”
“Because Marcel is so small, there was a temptation to do the sort of ‘Honey I Shrunk the Kids’ soundscape where everything sounds massive,” explained director and co-writer Dean Fleischer-Camp in a recent interview with IndieWire. “We picked our moments to do that, but I didn’t want it to feel that way. My sonic comparisons were mostly documentaries. There was a lot of trying to soften things so that nothing stood out.”
That applied to everything from the film’s soundtrack, which consisted of a blend of original compositions and ambient synth music, to natural sounds and the noises made by the characters. Much of the sound is Marcel’s movement or sounds generated by that.

Exclusive: Deadline has an exclusive track from Disasterpeace’s score for the anticipated stop-motion comedy Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, which is set for digital release via Lakeshore Records tomorrow, as A24 releases the pic in North America. (A vinyl edition of the soundtrack is also forthcoming.)
The film centers on Marcel (Jenny Slate), an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful existence with his grandmother Connie (Isabella Rossellini) and their pet lint, Alan. It’s based on Dean Fleischer-Camp and Slate’s viral stop-motion shorts of the same name, which have garnered more than 50 million YouTube views since their 2010 debut, also spurring the creation of two New York Times bestselling children’s books.
With his vivid yet measured score for the Marcel film, Disasterpeace looked to reflect the distinctively matter-of-fact yet wholly endearing qualities of the character that has gained millions of fans since its introduction. “The...

Late last year, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich worked on a recording that was incredibly unusual for him. He pummeled his kit for two days, generating militaristic rattles and big, tribal rhythms. As he played, he watched footage of Ben Affleck and Oscar Isaac yanking money out of the walls of a drug kingpin’s mansion and racing down beaches in pickup trucks while being shot at, and within a few weeks, he heard his drumming incorporated into the score of the film that became Netflix’s recently released Triple Frontier.

David Robert Mitchell isn’t the only one taking creative risks with his upcoming release, “Under the Silver Lake.” The filmmaker best known to audiences for his smart horror feature “It Follows” and his aching coming-of-age tale “The Myth of the American Sleepover” is taking both his talents and those of his composer Rich Vreeland (Aka Disasterpeace) in a decidedly noir direction. The pair first worked together on Mitchell’s breakout “It Follows,” which leaned into Disasterpeace’s love of synth-heavy scores to create a chilling atmosphere. Now, the duo are going for something a little different.
“Under the Silver Lake” stars Andrew Garfield in a unique spin on the neo-noir, with Disasterpeace adding some old Hollywood glamour with his first fully orchestral score. In his Cannes review, IndieWire’s Eric Kohn noted that the “searching Disasterpeace score” helps “the movie become a bittersweet ode to wanting answers from an...

With Halloween being this coming weekend, I wanted to have a little fun here and talk about scary movies and Oscar. As a general rule, the Academy doesn’t go for horror, but they have occasionally slipped on in here and there. This year, there’s a fringe contender in It Follows to consider, but mostly that candidacy is an excuse to look quickly at some of the fright flicks that have scored with the Academy. It’s not a particularly long list, but there are horror films that have been nominated for Academy Awards and even a handful from the genre that have won Oscars. Who knows, maybe It Follows can shock the world? As a refresher for those of you have aren’t familiar with the title, It Follows is a hybrid character study/coming of age tale/horror film from earlier this year. Written and directed by David Robert Mitchell,...

The Cinefamily Theatre in La has been known to turn up the spooky on Friday nights for their “Friday Night Frights” series. A few weekends ago, my current horror movie obsession, It Follows, was screened and Director David Robert Mitchell and Soundtrack Composer Disasterpeace (Rich Vreeland) made an appearance to answer questions and enjoy the show with fans. I was lucky enough to catch up with them before the film and get a few of my questions answered.
Famous Monsters. Thank you so much for taking the time to meet with me! I am a Huge fan of the film and am dying to hear where the inspiration for this story came from.

“It could look like someone you know or it could be a stranger in a crowd. Whatever helps it get close to you.”
A sexually transmitted haunting plagues a Detroit teenager in It Follows, a stylish horror film from director David Robert Mitchell that was released theatrically in March to great acclaim, especially from horror fans. In the wake of sleeping with a handsome stranger, Jay (Maika Monroe) quickly learns that she has inherited a most unusual curse: wherever she goes, lumbering, half-naked phantoms follow, and their singular goal is to see her dead. Desperate, Jay turns to her younger sister and loyal circle of friends to for help. In time, however, Jay learns that her only hope for escaping death is to sleep with someone else, and pass the curse on. But the pursuing phantoms are invisible to Jay’s friends and it soon becomes apparent that her time is running out.

With more than $8.5 million at the box office over four weekends, writer/director David Robert Mitchell's moody new horror film "It Follows" may not be a sleeper hit on the order of a bona fide blockbuster like "Scream," but since its release in only four theaters in early March, it's transformed into a tidy small-scale success that no one could have predicted just a month ago. Like Wes Craven's 1996 self-aware slasher, the critically-acclaimed fright flick is a true word-of-mouth sensation; it raked in so much money in limited release that distributor Radius-twc put off the film's planned VOD debut and gave it a wide release in over 1,600 theaters. To what can we attribute this unlikely good fortune? For starters, "It Follows" is good -- very good. Along with Jennifer Kent's masterful 2014 supernatural scare machine "The Babadook," "It Follows" has arrived like a breath of fresh air in...

One of the best parts of my job is when I can watch a film or a performance that I’ve championed actually catch on with audiences. This year, a slightly unexpected one has occurred in the form of horror movie It Follows. Even though it had played the Cannes Film Festival last year and made a few other fest stops, it was always seemingly going to be just an independent fright flick that got good reviews and then faded. At best, it could duplicate what The Babadook (a film I think is far inferior to It Follows, by the by) did in 2014. Then, out of nowhere, it began to get some of 2015’s best reviews, followed by two weeks of lighting the indie/limited release box office on fire. Now, as it goes into theaters nationwide today on over 1200 screens, It Follows is a certified indie hit, one that...

There is finite number of themes from which to draw, so half the battle of making a compelling film is finding a new angle to tell a story already told countless times. David Robert Mitchell succeeds at this as writer and director of It Follows, a new horror film that’s receiving a level of artistic appreciation and acclaim rarely experienced by films true to this genre.
Set in suburban Detroit, the story follows Jay, a teenage girl who unwittingly becomes the target of an invisible evil force when she falls for a teenage boy who is not who he seems. Once the truth of the terror she has inherited sets in, she realizes she will never again be able to relax and enjoy her life, unless she can find a way to destroy the force compelled to follow her anywhere she goes. Accompanied by a handful of close friends,...

When it comes to the Academy, the genre the least seem to embrace (give or take animation, though that at least has its own category) is horror. With the exception of The Silence of the Lambs, no fright flick has been nominated for Best Picture, and while that’s not going to change, periodically we get such top notch entries into the genre that awards consideration is warranted. A few years back, it was The Cabin in the Woods that got a small Best Original Screenplay push, while more recently The Babadook and You’re Next drummed up a bit of buzz. This year though, we have the best of the bunch (or at least the best since The Cabin in the Woods) with It Follows. The film opens this weekend after playing at the Cannes Film Festival last year and is easily the best of 2015 to date…not just in terms of horror either.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of chatting with writer/director David Robert Mitchell about his new film It Follows (read my review here), a not-at-all conventional horror film that certainly plays with horror movie cliches, but more as a recognizing nod to the films of the past than as crutches to tell his very creepy story. Starring Maika Monroe, It Follows centers on a 19-year-old girl whose world is turned upside down after a sexual encounter that finds her plagued by the inescapable sense that someone, something, is following her. I spoke with Mitchell about concerns making a film in which one actor is simply followed by another actor and how you make that scary, his work with Disasterpeace (aka Rich Vreeland) on the score, films that inspired It Follows as well as working in independent cinema, a realm where the belief is it's rather cheap to get a film made nowadays.

This Friday sees the release of David Robert Mitchell's hotly buzzed horror film "It Follows" (review here, some spoilers), a fun, stylish fusion of down-and-dirty genre horror with arthouse aesthetics. But it's not only visually sumptuous —a significant part of its atmosphere is down to its fantastic score, which is used lavishly and loudly throughout: a heavily John Carpenter-inspired roiling mass of disquieting atonal blares and drones from Distasterpeace's Rich Vreeland (check out three exclusive tracks). In fact, it feels like the fine art of the horror score (and is there any film genre more reliant on evocative soundscapes than horror?) is rallying for a comeback after its heyday in the '70s and '80s. Recent films like "You're Next," "Berberian Sound Studio," "The Conjuring," "Room 237" and "Maniac" have each boasted terrific original music, so we thought we'd ride that zeitgeist and take a look and.

It's rare for a horror film to earn the kind of buzz that David Robert Mitchell's "It Follows" has, and it's even rarer for it to sustain this long. The movie first premiered last year at Cannes, and since then it has hit festivals around the world, picking up steam, word-of-mouth, and critical acclaim, without losing a step. While much of the talk has been about how Mitchell subverts many of the conventional genre tropes, an equally compelling ingredient to his unique concoction has been the soundtrack by Disasterpeace a.k.a. Rich Vreeland. And today, we've got three great, exclusive tracks from the film. Led by Maika Monroe, "It Follows" tells the story of a young woman who is given a sexually transmitted disease, with a twist — she's infected with a disease that finds her being chased by phantoms only she can see. And the only way to...
