The new documentary by the French filmmaker who recently won acclaim for J'ai aimé vivre là and Retour à Forbach is produced and sold worldwide by Shellac. Having kicked off on 25 October, filming on Régis Sauder’s En nous officially wrapped on 4 December. This is the 5th feature-length documentary put forward by the filmmaker, who won much acclaim at the recent FIDMarseille owing to J'ai aimé vivre là (underpinned by several of Annie Ernaux’s works and set to be released in French cinemas by Shellac on 3 March 2021), as well as for his film Retour à Forbach (discovered at the Cinéma du Réel Festival in 2017). In En nous, the director re-connects with the protagonists populating his first feature, Nous, princesses de Clèves, reporting back, ten years later, on the paths they have taken in today’s society. At the time, the stories of Abou, Morgane, Laura, Cadiatou, Jacques...
New projects by Claire Denis and Asghar Farhadi, the first fiction feature by Alice Diop and a documentary by Régis Sauder will also be co-produced by the cinema branch of the Franco-German channel. The second selection committee for 2020 of Arte France Cinéma (headed by Olivier Père) has chosen to engage in co-production and in pre-buying on five projects. Standing out among them is La Ligne, which will be the third fiction feature from Franco-Swiss director Ursula Meier following Home (Critics’ Week in Cannes in 2008) and Sister (Silver Bear special prize winner at the 2012 Berlinale). For the record, the filmmaker also presented in the Panorama section of the 2018 Berlinale the TV fiction Shock Waves – Diary of My Mind. Written by Ursula Meier together with Stéphanie Blanchoud (who will also be playing the lead role) in collaboration with Antoine Jaccoud and with the participation of Robin Campillo...

The San Francisco International Film Festival (Sfiff), the longest one running in the Americas, opens tonight with Mike Mills's Beginners and closes on May 5 with Mathieu Amalric's On Tour. Among the 150 films screening in between, give or take, will be the centerpiece, Azazel Jacobs's Terri.
"In terms of artistic achievement, it's safe to say no producer has contributed to independent American cinema over the last two decades like Christine Vachon," writes Dennis Harvey, introducing his interview. Vachon will be delivering the State of Cinema address on Sunday evening (it's a busy time for her; she's also on Tribeca's Documentary and Student Short Film Competitions jury). Also at SF360, Michael Fox has cinema studies professor Bill Nichols give him a preview of the discussion he'll be leading on the Social Justice Documentary and talks with Bay Area filmmakers who have work in the lineup.

As some film festivals diminish in size or structure during these woeful economic times, the San Francisco International Film Festival (Sfiff), the longest-running film festival in the Americas, launched its 54th version April 21 with a screening of writer-director Mike Mills’ “Beginners,” starring Mélanie Laurent, Ewan McGregor, Christopher Plummer and Goran Visnjic.
The next day, Sfiff was in full force, screening films from around the world in several different venues in San Francisco and beyond, and will continue until May 5.
Some of the European highlights in the festival are writer-director Athina Rachel Tsangari’s delightfully quirky film “Attenberg,” about a 23-year-old Greek woman, Marina (Ariane Labed), coming to terms with sex, death and decay in its various forms, and Régis Sauder’s “Children of teh Princess of Cleves,” a rather fascinating documentary about a group of working-class French teenagers who find value in themselves, literature and art...
