Rock fans are in luck: This week’s digital releases involve Sonic Youth, Indigo Girls, and The Beatles. Get ready for a toe-tapping triple feature.
The contender to watch this week: “Uncropped”
A perfect companion piece to “The Freaks Came Out to Write,” Tricia Romano‘s new book about the history of The Village Voice, “Uncropped” profiles one of the iconoclastic newspaper’s signature photographers. James Hamilton captured the streets of New York, musicians like Patti Smith and the Beastie Boys, wartime conflicts in China and the Philippines, and production stills for the likes of Francis Ford Coppola and Wes Anderson. His juicy career is detailed in this unconventional documentary directed by D.W. Young (“The Booksellers”), who stages a handful of intimate conversations between Hamilton and his collaborators, including Anderson and Sonic Youth frontman Thurston Moore. Following a limited theatrical release in April, “Uncropped” is available on VOD.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
La Chimera (Alice Rohrwacher)
While Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny perhaps garnered more press out of Cannes, another selection involving archaeologists and tomb raiders will have a longer shelf life. Alice Rohrwacher’s latest feature La Chimera ranked quite highly on our top 50 films of 2023 list for good reason. It’s a dreamy, magical odyssey in which the Italian director whisks viewers away with the kind of transportive vision she’s exuded in all her features thus far.
Where to Stream: VOD
Eileen (William Oldroyd)
Considering how many jokesters online talk about supporting women’s wrongs, Eileen should have made a billion dollars. Alas, not everyone can have impeccable taste. William Oldroyd’s character study grabs you from the first scene,...

At the beginning of David Lynch's 1984 adaptation of "Dune," Princess Irulan (Virginia Madsen) narrates directly to the camera, laying out the mythology of Frank Herbert's psychedelic universe as concisely as she can. She talks about the Pashisah Emperor Shaddam IV, the valuable spice Melange, the planet Arrakis, the Fremen, and the foretold coming of a Messiah. "A beginning," she says, "is a very delicate time." Her sentiment is reflected by the filmmakers, who have their work cut out for them visualizing everything Irulan talks about.
In Denis Villeneueve's 2024 adaptation of the same text -- "Dune: Part Two" -- Princess Irulan is played by Florence Pugh, and she, too, finds a beginning to be a very delicate time. One of the first times audiences see Irulan in Villeneueve's version, she is likewise dictating the events of the film, this time into a strange cylindrical dictaphone. It wouldn’t take much to convince an unsuspecting audience member that Mothers’ Instinct is the latest dispatch from the Don’t Worry Darling cinematic universe. The directorial debut of cinematographer Benoît Delhomme initially appears to be a surface-level rendering of a bygone era, a vaguely defined late 1950s or early 1960s, in which the women are talked out of career prospects and encouraged to stay at home to be wives and mothers, first and foremost, kept at a distance from their husbands’ lives. But, of course, nefarious secrets are discovered to be closer to home and far lower in concept within this stylish melodrama, which hews far closer to the “women’s pictures” of the period depicted in both style and substance than the campier thriller it’s being presented as––though those looking for the latter will still get what they ordered courtesy of Anne Hathaway’s brilliantly rendered turn as grieving mother Céline.

Love Lies Bleeding, the latest thriller from Rose Glass, has energy and style to burn. Kristen Stewart stars as mousy gym worker Lou who falls hard and fast for sculpted bodybuilder Jackie (Katy O'Brian) after she stops off in her small town on the way to a competition in Vegas. The pair fall hard and fast for each other but Jackie’s increasing addiction to steroids coupled with Lou’s criminal family - headed by Ed Harris’ Lou Sr - create a powder keg that’s ready to blow. The film is set in the late-80s, a period reinforced by careful costuming from Olga Mill - who previously brought her skills to William Oldroyd’s Sixties-set Eileen. We caught up with the designer, who also has films including Hereditary and Never Rarely Sometimes Always on her CV, to talk...

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Ottessa Moshfegh may have been channeling Hitchcock for her screenplay for William Oldroyd’s “Eileen,” but star Marin Ireland turned to a much different filmmaker for creative inspiration on the 1960s-set noir. The film was co-written by Luke Goebel.
Ireland, nominated for Best Supporting Performance for “Eileen” opposite Anne Hathaway, who was also nominated, came by IndieWire’s spot at the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards red carpet to talk the 2023 Neon release. Eileen Movie Review Rating:
Star Cast: Thomasin McKenzie, Shea Whigham, Marin Ireland, Owen Teague, Anne Hathaway
Director: William Oldroyd
Review of Eileen Is Out! (Picture Credit: Youtube)
What’s Good: Thomasin McKenzie’s portrayal of Eileen is refreshing, devoid of traditional expectations, while Anne Hathaway captivates with her artificial yet electric depiction of Rebecca. Marin Ireland’s exceptional performance adds authentic trauma, and the film’s cold, desolate portrayal of women resonates.
What’s Bad: The narrative loses its initial psychological complexity, devolving into a thinly developed crime plot. The film needs to work on the balance between psychosexual strangeness and a more conventional storyline, leaving the audience uncertain about its direction.
Loo Break: “‘Eileen” offers a brief pause around the 45-minute mark when Eileen enters Rebecca’s office. Feel free to take a break but return promptly for the unfolding narrative.
Watch or Not?: “Eileen” is a film...

David Ayer has been making action movies for more than 20 years. "Training Day" might still be his most famous credit as a writer, but he also has writing credits on "The Fast and The Furious," "U-571," and "S.W.A.T." and he later wrote and directed films like "End of Watch," "Fury," "Sabotage," and "Suicide Squad" (the latter of which was infamously recut by Warner Bros. before its release). With all of that experience, one might assume he'd be the one imparting advice or doling out nuggets of mastery on the set of his latest action film, "The Beekeeper." But as I learned in a recent interview with the director, Ayer is smart enough to know when to listen -- especially when working with a genre superstar like Jason Statham.
"He schooled me," Ayer told me about his collaboration with Statham on their new movie. "I mean, let's be real: He's an action icon,...

In Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel of the same name, the woman with a morbidly empty existence and a miserable relationship with her life is vocal about the gory bits of it all. The same Eileen is more of an enigma in the 2023 movie adaptation by William Oldroyd, where the layers of her insipid lifestyle are ruffled by her effervescent desires to break free. Thomasin McKenzie’s lead in Eileen seems to have internalized the quiet chaos that’d brew within someone like Eileen, only to explode when touched by Anne Hathaway’s glamorous Rebecca.

All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt (Raven Jackson)
A film that feels uprooted from deep beneath the earth, Raven Jackson’s poetic, patient debut is a distillation of cinema to its purest form, a stunning patchwork of experience and memory. Tethered around the life of Mack, a Black woman from Mississippi, as we witness glimpses of her childhood, teenage years, and beyond, All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt becomes a sensory experience unlike anything else this year. Shot in beautiful 35mm by Jomo Fray and edited by Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s collaborator Lee Chatametikool, there’s a reverence for nature and joy for human connection that seems all too rarified in today’s landscape of American filmmaking. – Jordan R.

Searching for and listening to movie soundtrack music for the year is an active quest of curiosity, discovery, and collage. For those fatigued and pushing through the chilliest season, I hope this mix can provide both energy and warmth, as it did to me in making it.Trends in film music over the last decade are continuing strong in 2023, particularly in the ambition of independent auteurs using complex and unusual scoring. The foundation for this mix is Angela Schanelec's beautiful and aptly titled Music, which provides both diegetic and non-diegetic moments to guide us. Samples range from The Old Oak, in which classical choral choir meets Syrian guitar and words of hope that now hit harder than ever, to a mix of sentimental strings courtesy of the legendary Joe Hisaishi. Abstract experimental sounds by two completely different kinds of artists—Harmony Korine and Thomas Newman—are mixed with sliced...

In a cinematic landscape filled with talent, certain performances stand out. From the quiet intensity of Greta Lee in Past Lives to the commanding presence of Taraji P. Henson in The Color Purple, this collection of actors make up some of my favorite performances of the year of films I saw. Each actor brings a unique energy and emotional depth to their roles to not only define their characters but elevate them.
These are not in any particular order.
Greta Lee & Teo Yoo, Past Lives
Lee beautifully navigates the delicate emotional journey put forth in Celine Song’s script. She embodies Nora’s quiet longing with a subtlety, her expressive eyes and gentle smile hinting at the depths of unsaid feelings. When faced with the ghosts of the yesterday, Lee unleashes a rawness that both devastates and resonates, reminding us of the vulnerability it takes to confront the paths not taken.

Welcome to the Scene to Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex Associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
I have a disclaimer. I talk to actress Thomasin Mackenzie, director William Oldroyd, script writers Ottessa Moshfeg and Luke Goebel, about the Neon film Eileen, but this episode is going to be split into two.
First half is a separate interview with Thomasin Mackenzie and the second half is a full interview with Moshfegh, Goebel and Oldroyd. Think of this as the Eileen hour! Hope you can cut me some slack because they couldn’t record together!
Eileen is adapted from the novel of the same name written by Ottessa Moshfeg. Alongside Mackenzie, the film stars Ann Hathaway, Shea Wigham, Marin Ireland, and Siobhan Fallon Hogan.

As we wrap up our year-end coverage, IndieWire looks back at the people, projects, and ideas that defined 2023 — and what’s coming next.
If the antihero was the poster child for peak TV, then the downright off-putting and repulsive heroes of the story were ambassadors for film in 2023. Expulsion, waste, and self-destruction — bodily and psychic — were on the minds and in the guts of many of this year’s most divisive and in some cases beloved movies.
We’ve all seen the social media tagline that such and such “changed my DNA.” In a moment in which postures of self-deprecation and flagrant wallowing in our own soupy misery define internet expression, it’s only natural that the movies would respond — and the quote-unquote repulsiveness of such characters is borne out of a desire to transform, and maybe become, in the words of Radiohead, something happier, better.

Japanese studio Toho has taken a $225 million stake in Fifth Season, the U.S.-based independent studio known for producing Apple TV+’s hit series Severance and Max’s Tokyo Vice. The new partners unveiled the deal Monday, saying it will allow Fifth Season to “continue expanding its broad slate of premium content.” Korean entertainment giant Cj Enm will retain majority ownership in Fifth Season, while Toho becomes a 25 percent owner and Endeavor Group Holdings continues as a strategic shareholder.

Japanese studio Toho, producer of current box office hit Godzilla Minus One, is paying $225M to acquire a 25% stake in producer-distributor Fifth Season. The investment is being made through Toho’s U.S. subsidiary, Toho International.
Korea’s Cj Enm remains the majority shareholder in Fifth Season, following an acquisition of 80% of shares made last year, while Endeavor Group Holdings continues as a strategic shareholder. Following completion of the deal, Fifth Season will have a valuation of $900M.
Fifth Season declined to comment when asked about the new share of the company’s shareholdings following the transaction. However, it is understood the deal results in a dilution for the current shareholders.

We’ve all got that friend. The one who convinces us to push our boundaries or take that crazy risk, even though we have a hunch we’ll probably get hurt. They’re exciting, they’re cool, maybe even supportive, but they tend to lead us down the road to trouble, only to duck out when the consequences roll around. Film has a long history of these toxic troublemakers. Looking back, the Horror/Thriller genre was practically built on the backs of these smiling devils, who lure us in with their fun-loving wiles, then lead us off the side of a cliff.

This article contains major spoilers for "Eileen."
A lot of people know what they want when they buy a ticket to see a movie, or buy it on physical media, or click on a title in the streaming service of their choice. If it looks like a romantic comedy, they expect a romantic comedy, and they're likely to be disappointed if they get something else instead. This is where the concept of genre comes from, the desire to categorize films based on tangible qualities, so the audiences in the mood for certain storytelling or artistic styles can find what they're looking for. It's comforting to have at least some idea of what you're going to get, even if you don't know how exactly you are going to get it.
But then there are films like William Oldroyd's "Eileen."

William Oldroyd's "Eileen," a quiet drama between two women (Thomasin McKenzie and Anne Hathaway) working at a Massachusetts prison in the 1960s, is one of the best movies of 2023. I was enjoying the film for its first two acts when I saw it back in January at this year's Sundance Film Festival (final warning: Turn back now if you haven't seen it yet!), but I still remember the burst of electricity that coursed through my body when a major moment happens near the end that totally alters the DNA of the film and takes it in a wildly unexpected direction.
Anne Hathaway remembers that moment, too. Not just the crowd's reaction to it at the Sundance premiere, which took her by surprise at how intense it was, but performing the specific take on set that was used in the final cut. "You do...

Parasitic obsession poisons the roots of William Oldroyd’s perverse noir romance “Eileen.” The film is adapted by screenwriter Ottessa Moshfegh and her partner Luke Goebel from her own mean and pungent novella about a repressed 24-year-old prison secretary who, in 1964 Massachusetts, falls under the spell of a beautiful, blond-headed Harvard-grad psychologist named, of all things, Rebecca. Is that on-the-nose-Hitchcockian enough for you?
Eileen is played by Thomasin McKenzie, while Rebecca is played by Anne Hathaway, who slurps martinis and says things like “I shouldn’t smoke, but I do.” She drifts into Eileen’s world like a vapor, and then, just as quickly, is gone. But not without bringing chaos crashing down onto Eileen’s life amid a depraved dance of muted desire.

This past weekend was a bit erratic with a few movies doing surprisingly better than others, but this weekend, there’s really only one new wide release, as much of December’s big holiday releases don’t hit until next week. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The one wide release is Gkids’ release of Hayao Miyazaki‘s latest animated feature, “The Boy and the Heron,” which has been playing in select cities but will get a nationwide release into roughly 1,800 theaters in both subtitled and dubbed versions, the latter often being the chosen format for parents with young kids. Miyazaki always gets amazing Western voice casts, this one including Robert Pattinson, Christian Bale, Mark Hamill, Willem Dafoe and many more.

[Editor’s Note: The following story contains light spoilers for the film “Eileen.”]
Thomasin McKenzie’s repressed prison secretary Eileen in William Oldroyd’s movie of the same name is a young woman whose bodily obsessions are an almost pathological rebellion against social decorum: downing chocolates and spitting them up, masturbating in car parks and shoving snow down her pants to stop up her desire, or examining a pubic hair embedded on a bar of soap.
In the novel “Eileen,” written by Ottessa Moshfegh who also co-writes the movie with her partner Luke Goebel, the character is much more scatologically fixated, compulsively eating laxatives and talking openly about matters of shit. But her gross little world in early 1960s Massachusetts is punctured by the arrival of a platinum-blonde, liberated psychologist played by Anne Hathaway.
“There were definitely some moments I was nervous to do. There’s some things you don’t want to be known for,” McKenzie told IndieWire. “I don’t...

Plot: Eileen (Thomasin McKenzie) is a depressed young woman living a dreary existence in 1960s Boston. She’s stuck taking care of her cruel, alcoholic father (Shea Whigham) while working as a secretary in a boys’ prison. Her life changes when the prison’s new psychiatrist turns out to be an alluring young woman (Anne Hathaway), unlike anyone Eileen has ever met.

In Double Indemnity, this magnetic blonde seduces a hapless salesman and convinces him to kill her husband in order to cash in on the titular insurance policy.
