Netflix has nabbed the worldwide rights to Lucy Walker’s documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa after a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival.
“It’s actually a fairy tale. You work for decades, and sometimes you have decades you’re doing everything wrong or nearly right, and then you have moments where you say I’m so glad I kept going,” Walker said of premiering the doc at TIFF during a Visionaries session sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter.
“Netflix is particularly good as it’s so global,” Walked added. A 2024 streaming release is planned for the documentary about Lhakpa Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to completely summit and survive Mount Everest. She climbed Mount Everest while bringing up two teenage daughters and recovering from an abusive marriage.
The film was shown as a work-in-progress at Toronto a year ago, before Walker returned for the world premiere.

Netflix has picked up worldwide rights to the documentary “Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa” out of the Toronto International Film Festival, TheWrap has learned. The sale comes on the heels of another high-profile pickup from Netflix, Anna Kendrick’s serial killer directorial debut “Woman of the Hour.”
The streamer will release the film in 2024.
Directed by Lucy Walker (“Of Night & Light”), the film tells the story of Lhakpa Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit and descend Mount Everest who is now a single mom working at a Connecticut Whole Foods.
“Lhakpa grew up in Nepal, illiterate and rejected by her family, and emigrated to the US without speaking English,” the official synopsis from TIFF reads. “When we meet her, she’s working as a dishwasher at Whole Foods in Connecticut, raising her teenage daughters, Sunny and Shiny, in a small apartment. She’s a single mom and spousal-abuse survivor.

Exclusive: Netflix has acquired worldwide rights to the documentary Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa out of the Toronto Film Festival, Deadline can exclusively reveal.
The deal is the second in quick succession for the streamer, which less than 12 hours ago snapped up Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, Woman of The Hour, for $11 million. No details as to the financial terms were disclosed.
Pic’s subject, Lhakpa Sherpa, was the first Nepali woman to completely summit and survive Mount Everest. For anyone else, that might be the greatest challenge and achievement of their life. But for the unforgettable Lhakpa — now a single mother of three, based in Connecticut — it was just the start.
Hailing from Sk Global Entertainment, Obb Pictures, and Avocados and Coconuts, the doc was directed by Lucy Walker, the 2x Oscar nominee previously at TIFF with another tale of a female Everest climber in 2006’s Cinema Eye Honors Award-nominated Blindsight.

The latest 007 adventure, No Time to Die, opens today, but the Bond film is not the only tentpole-scaled entertainment happening of the weekend. The Amazon Prime Video release of the concert documentary Justin Bieber: Our World also qualifies, from the perspective of director Michael D. Ratner.
“We’re living in a time when it’s not just Marvel movies and franchises that are the big tentpole, Hollywood world-changing events, it’s these mega-music projects,” Ratner tells Deadline. “Amazon’s been phenomenal and they’ve had a history of making tentpole, event-ized projects like this.”
The project began with an ambitious idea: as 2020 neared an end, the music superstar and his team dreamed of a way to “close out a year unlike any other.” They put together a one-time New Years Eve concert to be staged on the roof of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, marking Bieber’s first live performance in three years.

Ever wanted to see Justin Bieber get his nose swabbed for a Covid test? Here’s your chance. Director Michael D. Ratner’s by-the-numbers music documentary “Justin Bieber: Our World” is strictly for the fans. While Beliebers may be titillated by the mundane behind-the-scenes goings-on of the pop brat’s pandemic-era concert on the roof of the Beverly Hilton, there’s little else to invite in new audiences. Still,
While the documentary opens with Bieber filming himself rising out of bed and taking a shower (not unlike the beginning of Netflix’s much slicker Shawn Mendes documentary), you can hardly mistake this concert documentary as some kind of unvarnished vérité record. This thing has been wiped and polished with a public-relations sheen. What the movie does offer is a beveled window into the pop star’s day-to-day with wife Hailey Bieber, and the sorts of (obviously staged) stilted conversations the pair have.

“That was one thing that I was very good at,” Demi Lovato confides directly to camera in her docuseries Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil. “Hiding the fact that I was addicted to crack and heroin.”

The fourth and final installment of the YouTube Originals series “Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil” tasked Therapy Studios editor Shannon Albrink with tying together the work of Paul Little, who cut the first three episodes, and of providing closure to a volatile and vulnerable period in the pop star’s life.
The key, according to Albrink, was in maintaining Lovato’s truth. But with that came the additional challenge of a brief engagement — and subsequent breakup — as well as the singer’s exploration of being “California sober,” opting for moderation as opposed to abstinence.
Albrink reveals how she edited the episode, the challenges that come with sensitive topics and how Lovato’s story inspired her own work.

“Of course, in the early stages of a project like this, where you’re baring your soul, it starts off a little guarded, inherently — even if that’s not your intention,” Ratner said in an interview with TheWrap. “You’re figuring out how comfortable you are. And I think as the documentary process moved on, and as she started seeing some of the stuff cut together, she just got more and more open.”

A year has passed since Covid-19 impacted the world and changed the idea of what normal life was like. One of the very first major events effected was South By Southwest (SxSw.) Last March, SxSw had to cancel just weeks before its annual conference which attracts over 100,000 people each year who descind on Austin, Texas for the latest in innovation, film, and music.
12 months later, SxSw like many others has been forced to reimagine itself as SxSw Online. A 5-day venture into the world of an online film/music/tech festival. On Tuesday night the film portion of festival kicked off in attendee’s homes with an eye-opening roller coaster ride into the life of pop megastar Demi Lovato and her battles that almost killed her just three years ago.

In Demi Lovato’s upcoming YouTube documentary series “Dancing With the Devil,” the singer revealed she was sexually assaulted the night of her near-fatal overdose in 2018.
According to BuzzFeed News, Lovato said in the doc that she was raped by her drug dealer, who remains anonymous, on the night she overdosed on heroin.
“I didn’t just overdose. I was taken advantage of,” she said. “When they found me, I was naked, blue. I was literally left for dead after he took advantage of me.”
Lovato added that when she was subsequently hospitalized, a nurse asked if she’d had consensual sex that night. The singer briefly remembered the incident and said yes, but realized a month later that wasn’t true.
“When I woke up in the hospital, they asked if we had had consensual sex… There was one flash that I had of him on top of me.

In its earliest moments, Demi Lovato’s new documentary series looks familiar and even comforting to fans of the genre of backstage concert confessionals. We see Lovato doing a pre-show cheer with her backup dancers, performing framed by massive screens of her own face, sleeping on the jet, racing from quick-change to quick-change. Throughout, she is too much a pro to betray any emotion beyond anticipation of what well-rehearsed step lies ahead. These beats are as familiar to the music-doc connoisseur as are any of Lovato’s songs, and they’re only really notable when they’re subverted — like in the masterful 2012 film “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” in which the “Firework” singer, having just been informed that her marriage is over, weeps backstage before forcing herself into the pneumatic tube that leads to the stage and painting a grin on.
