Disney and Netflix are generally viewed as two of the most bulletproof brands in the industry that can do no wrong in the eyes of many fans, but both have found themselves caught up in a storm of recent controversy. The Mouse House are facing widespread backlash for Mulan‘s connections to a region of China linked to human rights violations, while the world’s biggest streaming service are under fire for releasing a movie that’s angered a whole lot of people.
Cuties is a critically acclaimed and award-winning coming-of-age drama directed by an up-and-coming filmmaker that thought she’d lucked out in a big way when her feature debut was picked up by Netflix to be distributed to over 180 million subscribers worldwide, but one misjudged poster from the marketing team has seen it become one of the most talked about titles of the year for all the wrong reasons.

Netflix have made a rare branding misstep with Cuties, the by-all-accounts pretty solid French drama from Maïmouna Doucouré. The streamer’s choice of promotional material for the film generated a significant online backlash, including a petition to remove it from the service, and a generally poor showing with subscribers. This reaction has now extended to the hashtag #CancelNetflix trending again on Twitter.
Although we don’t think Netflix are going to be too worried, the issues in the promo material for Cuties, which arguably misrepresents the subject matter of the film, should act as a lesson for the company. Cuties focuses on a Senegalese Muslim girl who rebels against her family by taking up with a twerking group, and has picked up critical praise, including a major prize nomination at Sundance.

Democrats added another Republican to their lineup of speakers at the convention on Tuesday: Colin Powell, the former Secretary of State under George W. Bush.
Powell already endorsed Biden, and he also backed Hillary Clinton in 2016 and Barack Obama in his 2008 and 2012 campaigns. But this is the first time that he has spoken at a Democratic convention.
“Our country needs a commander in chief who takes care of our troops, in the same way he would his own family,” Powell said in a clip released on Tuesday. “For Joe Biden, that doesn’t need teaching. It comes from the experienced he shares with millions of military families, sending his beloved son off to war and praying to God he would come home safe.”
Watch: A first look at fmr. Sec. of State Colin Powell’s speech endorsing Joe Biden.

In tweet Wednesday, the TV host announced that she had evacuated her home due to a nearby blaze.

Rachel Maddow’s surprise announcement Tuesday night that she would be broadcasting portions of President Donald Trump‘s tax returns created a frenzy on social media.
But by the time The Rachel Maddow Show aired, reaction was mixed. Many liberals were disappointed that Maddow only had two pages of the billionaire businessman’s taxes from 2005 – and no bombshell.
Conservatives – including the president’s son Donald Trump Jr. – crowed that the documents showed Trump paid $38 million on $150 million in revenue, seemingly refuting claims that he dodged taxes.
Kal Penn got bored and changed the channel to Real Housewives of Beverley Hills.
