BAFTA-winning Once Upon a Time In Northern Ireland creator James Bluemel has found his next project, an exploration of space.
Bluemel, who has made some of the most critically-acclaimed British docs of the past few years, has also joined Once Upon a Time … producer Keo Films as Creative Director.
Once Upon a Time in Space will look at the humans who are once again heading back out into the atmosphere. China, Russia, America, India, Saudi Arabia and Japan are all investing heavily in lunar exploration, jostling for power and influence amongst the stars, and the series will profile this new space race, examining the consequences for the future of humankind.
“It will be interesting creatively to take the Once Upon a Time approach and focus it on a subject like space, to move the strand on in an unexpected and refreshing way,” said Bluemel. He is EPing alongside Will Anderson and Andrew Palmer for Keo.

Scottish filmmakers Will Anderson and Ainslie Henderson clinched the Powell And Pressburger Award for best film, the new main competition award at the Edinburgh Film Festival, with their debut feature A Cat Called Dom.
Anderson and Henderson both star in and co-direct the indie flick, which follows how Anderson deals with the grief of his mother’s cancer. In the film, the duo work on their animations and face the frustrations of trying to make this documentary. Whilst alone, Will turns to Dom, the animated cat that lives on his laptop screen.
The jury, comprised of president Gaylene Gould, producer Rosie Crerar, and author Sarah Winman, cited the “special collaboration” between the legendary British filmmakers Powell and Pressburger which they said “was grounded in deeply human stories and the belief that life can be magic” when handing the award to A Cat Called Dom.

Aw, what an adorable little monkey. This BAFTA nominated short film titled Monkey Love Experiments is worth a quick watch, telling the story of a tiny monkey named "Gandhi" who dreams of traveling into space. Made by Ainslie Henderson and Will Anderson, the short is inspired by actual experiments and space missions in the early 1960s. Gandhi is a stop-motion animated puppet but they bring him to life perfectly to tell this charming story (it's all in the eyes, right?). I appreciate the attention to detail and that they made this feel like it was filmed on 16mm in the 60s. Poor lil' guy just wants to go to space. Don't we all, monkey. Thanks to io9 for the tip on this. Description from Vimeo: "Inspired by love, a misguided monkey believes he is destined for the moon." Monkey Love Experiments is an animated short film written and directed by Ainslie Henderson and Will Anderson.

The 2015 Ee BAFTA Awards were handed out in London Sunday night and while the broadcast aired hours later in the United States, it didn't stop us from chronicling the twists and turns of a show often seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards. It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. "Whiplash" earned three BAFTAs including J.K. Simmons for Supporting Actor, Editing and a somewhat surprising win in Sound. Expected Oscar winners Julianne Moore took Leading Actress and Patricia Arquette took Supporting Actress. Eddie Redmayne earned a key win over rival Michael Keaton by claiming the Lead Actor BAFTA for "The Theory of Everything." The latter also won...

British live action and animated shorts will go on UK and international tour from March
BAFTA has today announced that audiences across the UK, and internationally, will be able to see a feature-length package of this year’s BAFTA-nominated British short films and animations at the cinema from March.
For a third year, BAFTA is partnering with distributor the Independent Cinema Office (Ico), which is handling all UK theatrical bookings, and with British Council, which will tour the films internationally through their network of offices in 110 countries.
Last year’s programme visited 30 venues across the UK, and 50 venues internationally in territories including Hong Kong, India, Kuwait, Colombia, Armenia, and Kazakhstan.
Selected screenings of the films – which are nominated in the British Short Film and British Short Animation categories – will be followed by a Q&A session with the filmmakers, who this year include several beneficiaries of BAFTA new talent initiatives, such as:

It’s almost time for the British Academy Film Awards, and earlier today (January 9) the illustrious list of nominees was unveiled. Wes Anderson’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel” is out in front with 11 nods, while “Birdman” is close behind with an impressive 10 chances for glory.
Meanwhile, both Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) have been nominated for Best Actor, though Redmayne insists there’s no competition between them. He explained, "One can try and create a rivalry but it will not happen! We both absolutely understand people wanting to pitch us against each other, but we are old, old friends and I think he is the most wonderful actor. He is sensational in 'The Imitation Game' and I love watching him.”

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just finished announcing their nominations for best achievement in film for 2014, with Wes Anderson’s quirky comedy The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the pack with 11 nominations. Not far behind are Birdman and The Theory of Everything with ten nods apiece. All three films have earned nods in many of the same top categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and in their respective Best Screenplay categories.
Some may find it surprising that the most lauded film of the year, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood, only made a showing with five nominations, but they were all in top categories (Film, Director, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, and Original Screenplay). However, it is a little shocking that no nod for editing was included (and that’s with six nominees already in the category due to a tie), as this is usually considered a...

Short film strand The Shooting Gallery is returning for a four week run on UK broadcaster Channel 4 from Nov 11.
It will showcase nine new films from up-and-coming UK filmmaking talent.
The series will feature work from multiple genres ranging from BAFTA-winning shorts like Will Anderson’s The Making of Longbird and Charlotte Carden’s The Taxidermist [pictured], to campaigning micro-documentaries depicting real life stories of miscarriages of justice told by survivors of Death Row, by Will Francome and Mark Pizzey.
Film-makers including Scotland’s Marcus McPeake (Your Picture Gets Mine) and London-based Oliver Goodrum (This is Vanity) will have their shorts featured.
The talent showcase previously helped launch the careers of Shane Meadows, Clio Barnard and Andrea Arnold.
This year has seen Channel 4 broadcast more short films across its schedule than ever before, with more than 300 films featured through the Random Acts strand alone.
