Foo Fighters kicked off their 2024 tour (get tickets here) on Wednesday, May 1st at Dos Equis Pavilion in Dallas, Texas, and paid tribute to hometown hero Dimebag Darrell during the show. Fittingly, Dave Grohl dedicated “My Hero” to the late Pantera guitarist.
In fan-filmed video (watch below), Grohl starts playing “My Hero” on guitar and addresses the crowd: “This one’s for everybody. Actually, you know what, since we’re here in Dallas, I’m gonna dedicate this one to an old friend. He lived around here. His name is Dimebag Darrell. How ’bout that? We’ll sing it for Darrell.”

“Genres are a funny little concept, aren’t they?” says Linda Martell, a country music pioneer, in the intro to Beyoncé’s “Spaghettii.” “In theory, they have a simple definition that’s easy to understand, but in practice, well, some may feel confined.” Those two sentences perfectly sum up how Beyoncé has subverted expectations in recent years by spreading her wings beyond pop, hip-hop, and R&b to infuse rock, house, and now country music into her own unique style that ultimately really is just “Beyoncé.”

Sharon Van Etten shared a new single called “Close to You,” which she co-wrote with Courtney Barnett for the official soundtrack to the upcoming Apple Original drama series The Buccaneers.
Equal parts eerie and alluring, “Close to You” sees Van Etten infuse her classic Americana-inspired rock with a heavy wash of dreamy reverb, cooing lines like: “I got a taste of being with you, don’t wanna waste more time,” “put on your best dress and get out of your head,” and “get away and I’ll stay close to you.”
The song was produced by Warpaint’s Stella Mozgawa, who also produced the entire soundtrack: “It was a truly incredible experience working with this group of uniquely talented artists,” she said in a press release. “Everyone brought their A-game and taught me something invaluable about the creative process. Witnessing these artists map each character’s journey through song was...

Noah Kahan has been having a great few months. The folk star has been rapidly rising in public awareness, starting with the release of his acclaimed breakout album, “Stick Season,” released a year ago. Now he has two charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100 simultaneously, multiple highbrow collaborations with previous Grammy nominees and winners and the acknowledgement of strong industry players, not to mention the album is still in the top 20 of the Billboard 200 albums chart. Clearly Kahan is doing something right, and people are taking notice. But among those fans of the breakout star, could there be Grammy voters ready to anoint him?
In many ways, Kahan could be considered Grammy bait. He is a folk singer, appealing to the big American roots contingent in the recording academy, but he should also appeal to a big audience of alternative and pop listeners. In that way, he’s similar to...

The Pretenders are back with their new album Relentless.
Relentless, The Pretenders’ follow-up to 2020’s Hate for Sale, was produced by multiple Grammy Award-nominee David Wrench at London’s Battery Studios. Along with bandleader Chrissie Hydne, the album features performances from Kris Sonne (drums), Chris Hill (double bass), Dave Page (bass), and Carwyn Ellis (keyboards and guitars), as well as a track featuring Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead.
“I enjoy seeing the various meanings and origins of a word,” Hynde said of the album’s title in a press release. “And I liked the definition: ‘showing no abatement of intensity.’ So when it came to an album title, it seemed fitting. You know…to keep doing it. I think anyone in a band is constantly questioning if they should keep going. It starts as a youthful pursuit and eventually, it makes you wonder, why am I doing this? It’s the life of the artist.

Courtney Barnett has big plans for the rest of 2023. The Australia singer-songwriter has crafted a new instrumental album called End of the Day, out September 8th, as well as a brief North American tour in which she’ll perform one set of the new songs and one set of tracks from her back catalog.
The music in End of the Day began as a group of compositions Barnett wrote with her longtime collaborator, Warpaint drummer Stella Mozgawa, for the score to Danny Cohen’s 2021 Barnett documentary Anonymous Club. A year later, however, the artist found herself coming back to the brief improvisations, and decided to turn them into something more cohesive. The resulting album comprises 17 tracks Barnett tweaked and re-recorded into one seamless work.
An instrumental album already offers a change in artistry for Barnett, who became a critical darling in the 2010s for her brand of lyrical, almost spoken-word indie rock.

Foo Fighters have followed up their surprise performance at Glastonbury by announcing a new UK stadium tour in 2024. And based on the itinerary, it looks as if Dave Grohl and co. could be making a return trip to Worthy Farm next year.
The “Everything or Not At All UK Tour” takes place in June 2024, with stadium shows in Manchester, Glasgow, London, Cardiff, and Birmingham. Wet Leg and Courtney Barnett will trade off as the main support for these dates.
Notably, Foo Fighters have nothing scheduled beyond their June 27th show in Birmingham. Glastonbury happens to take place that weekend, suggesting the band could be one of the festival’s 2024 headliners. Grohl insinuated as much during last weekend’s surprise appearance by telling the crowd: “I figure that if you guys come back we’ll come back soon.”
Tickets to Foo Fighters’ UK tour go on sale Friday, June 30th via Ticketmaster.

Last year I wrote a piece dissecting the last few Best New Artist Grammy winners, and I classified Meghan Trainor as one of the artists “cursed” by the sometimes-infamous award. Since then it seems like the tide has somewhat turned, with Trainor notching another major hit in late 2022 with “Made You Look,” thanks to a perfectly-executed TikTok campaign that most artists should take notes from. “Made You Look” certainly didn’t change things completely, as its parent album hasn’t really make a splash outside of that song, but it does make me reconsider Trainor’s career. With all that in mind, let’s take a look at how Trainor won the Grammy, and perhaps why she hasn’t repeated that awards success despite a couple more hits.

They say that rock is dying, guitar solos are old news, and kids today don’t like that kind of noise. Ok, sure — but have they heard Hello Mary?
The New York trio’s self-titled full-length debut, out March 3, is a blast of distorted chords, sunny harmonies, and all-consuming angst that will renew your faith in the hopelessly dated and/or timelessly classic sounds of alternative rock. Hello Mary is an instant contender for 2023’s most bracing entrance to the stage, sharp and self-assured. Oh yeah, and the band’s...

During a stop on Courtney Barnett’s touring festival Here and There, the musician took the stage with Sleater-Kinney and Fred Armisen to pay tribute to Olivia Newton-John with a cover of her 1981 single “Physical.”
For the energetic cover, the group donned ’80s headbands and Armisen showed off his best work out-inspired dance moves. The Redmond, Wa crowd sang along with the memorable chorus.
Barnett launched her traveling “Here and There” fest on Monday, Aug. 8, in Kansas City, Missouri. The trek will continue through early September, with a wide array...

Days before Courtney Barnett embarks her guest-filled Here and There touring festival, the Australian rocker visited CBS Mornings to preview the live show as part of the “Saturday Sessions.”
For the performance, Barnett delivered three tracks from her acclaimed 2021 LP Things Take Time, Take Time: “Rae Street,” “Write a List of Things to Look Forward To” and “Before You Gotta Go,” the latter of which she also played on The Late Show last month.

Appropriately for a musician on a tour for an album named Tell Me How You Really Feel, Aussie indie rocker Courtney Barnett does just that in this intimate documentary. Shot across three years by Danny Cohen - a long-time collaborator with the musician on her music videos - it's an emotionally honest if slight documentary that is most likely to appeal to existing fans of Barnett's work.
The word slight, incidentally, is in no way intended to refer to Barnett herself, who comes across as a deep thinker who cares equally deeply about her music and fans, but rather to the structure of the film itself which relies so heavily upon her observations that it sometimes frustratingly fails to fill in the biographical gaps. Although Cohen's friendship with Barnett no doubt adds to the film's up-close and confidential feel, and the choice of 16mm film stock gives it a soft.

Focus Features’ Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris will hit an estimated 1.9 million weekend gross at 980 theaters drawing women with those 55 years of age and older repping 44 of the total. Turnout was best on the coasts for the drama starring Leslie Manville and Isabelle Huppert.
That’s a PSA of 1,939 and a solid open in unpredictable times for specialty. Distributors these days can hope for at least 1 million on circa 1,000 screens, but don’t all make it. And there’s competition for the female demo this weekend with wide-release Where The Crawdads Sing. As Deadline reported, some fifty-five percent of Crawdads ticket buyers were women with 41 over 45 (although this film’s best markets were in the South and Midwest).

“Notoriously shy” is one of the first phrases used to describe Courtney Barnett in Anonymous Club, Danny Cohen’s documentary-cum-tour-diary, and if you only knew this Australian singer-songwriter from her live shows, the words might come as a low-voltage shock. Sensitive, sure. But shy? Onstage, Barnett has a knack for demonstrating why rock is also a verb; a sturdy guitarist on record, she doesn’t appear to play her Fender Telecaster so much as wrestle it into submission. The sound of her music is pure indie-label bliss, filled with confessional...

Exposing the isolation, mental health struggles, and imposter syndrome that can often come with universal acclaim so early in one’s career, Danny Cohen’s insular and gorgeously shot 16mm doc “Anonymous Club” burrows into singer/songwriter Courtney Barnett’s anxiety with striking clarity. Told across four chapters and roughly covering a few years in Barnett’s life — from her “Tell Me How You Really Feel” tour to early forays into writing her most recent “Things Take Time, Take Time” — “Anonymous Club” allows the reclusive artist to open up in intimate detail.

‘Anonymous Club’ Review: Courtney Barnett Doc Sensitively Captures the Loneliness of the Solo Singer
Courtney Barnett stands alone in the middle of a recording studio in Oslo. A dressing room in Bloomington. A rooftop in Berlin. On stage, the Australian singer-songwriter commands attention, her propulsive energy and raspy croon animating everyone in the room as she bares her soul with songs like “I’m Not Your Mother, I’m Not Your Bitch.” It’s these in-between moments, however, that speak to Barnett’s genuine nature — a shy, oftentimes sad human being who leads a solitary life, and has difficulty opening up anywhere but in her lyrics.
All of these qualities and more are captured on striking 16mm in “Anonymous Club,” the first feature from music video director Danny Cohen. A frequent collaborator of Barnett, Cohen developed a friendship with the singer that inspired him to try his hand at documentary filmmaking. Familiar with her reticence as an interview subject, Cohen asked her to speak...

Captured over three years on 16mm, the new documentary Anonymous Club goes on the road with Courtney Barnett as she tours the world for Tell Me How You Really Feel. With narration from the artist herself, recording from her audio diary, Danny Cohen’s film premiered at SXSW and will now arrive in theaters beginning July 15th.
John Fink said in his review, “A current of loneliness runs through Danny Cohen’s beautifully haunting Anonymous Club, a rich documentary filmed in 16mm chronicling little more than a year in the life of singer-songwriter Courtney Barnett. Those familiar with Barnett’s music know it ranges from the empowering, like her international hit “Pedestrian At Best” (“Put me on a pedestal and I’ll only disappoint you”), to her latest single “If I Don’t Hear From You Tonight,” which represents the new direction Barnett is exploring as she attempts to slow down in her 30s.

Bartees Strange needs a new hobby. Back when he wasn’t playing football in high school, studying communications in college, or working a nine-to-five at the FCC, he devoted every free hour to music. Now, his only job is writing, recording, and performing songs that defy the gravity of genre to scale some of the highest ambitions on the planet — and that leaves him with time to kill.
He’s thinking of taking up rock climbing.

Copenhagen Intl. Documentary Film Festival (Cph:Dox), which runs in-person March 21-April 3, has revealed the lineup for its music program, Sound & Vision.
