The gloves came off on The Daily Show on Monday night, as host Jon Stewart excoriated the news media for its overly extensive and, at times, incredibly dramatic coverage of former President Donald Trump’s New York criminal trial.
In the segment, titled “America’s Most Tremendously Wanted,” Stewart began by saying that “this trial will obviously be a test of the fairness of the American legal system. But it’s also a test that of the media’s ability to cover Donald Trump in a responsible way, a task they have acknowledged that they’ve performed poorly in the past.”
Stewart then proceeded to show clips of somber media self-reflection — from the likes of former CNN host Brian Stelter, MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace and Rachel Maddow — discussing the need to move away from the often breathless, speculative and needless coverage that Trump received during his term as president.
“So brave.

Richard Leibner, a celebrated talent agent who represented some of the best-known anchors in TV news, first at a firm he helped build and then for UTA, died Tuesday after a battle with cancer. He was 85 years old.
In his time, Leibner served as an agent and adviser to Dan Rather, Mike Wallace, Ed Bradley, Morley Safer, Bob Simon, Steve Kroft, Bill Whitaker, Diane Sawyer, Chuck Scarborough, Paula Zahn, Brian Stelter and Fareed Zakaria, among others. After just a few short days, and a whole lot of internal uproar, NBC News has backtracked on its decision to hire former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel as a paid contributor.
NBCUniversal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde made the announcement in a memo and said he had made the decision after listening to “the legitimate concerns” of many network employees. “No organization, particularly a newsroom, can succeed unless it is cohesive and aligned,” he wrote. “Over the last few days, it has become clear that this appointment undermines that goal.

Ronna McDaniel is out at NBC News. The former Republican National Committee head has been let go just four days after it was announced that she’d been hired as a paid contributor — a position that reportedly would have earned her $300,000 a year.
NBCUniversal News Group chairman Cesar Conde announced the news to his staff via email on Tuesday, according to CNN alum Brian Stelter: “There is no doubt that the last several days have been difficult for the News Group. After listening to the legitimate concerns of many of you, I have decided that Ronna McDaniel will not be an NBC News contributor.

“I’m not paying his legal bills in any way, shape or form,” a somewhat irritated-seeming Elon Musk told Don Lemon of his meeting with Donald Trump.
The clip was one of a handful Lemon shared with his former-coworker Erin Burnett on CNN this afternoon. In it, Musk denies giving Trump money and says their recently-reported meeting only happened by chance.
“I was at a breakfast at a friend’s place and Donald Trump came by,” Musk told Lemon, before adding” That’s it,” as if to close the book on the subject.
But Lemon wasn’t done.
“What did you talk about?” he asked.
A clearly flustered Musk said, “Let’s just say he did most of the talking.”
Lemon then asked Musk if Trump asked him for money.
“He didn’t,” replied the billionaire.

Don Lemon appears to have a sweet new deal with social-media giant X.
The former CNN anchor, who parted ways with the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet last year after he was moved to duties on its morning program, said Tuesday that he had launched a new media company and would be debuting a new program via X.
The new program, “The Don Lemon Show,” will allow him to be “bigger, bolder, freer,” Lemon said in a posting. The show “will be available to everyone, easily, whenever and wherever you want it, streaming on the platforms where conversations are happening. And you’ll find it first on X, the biggest space for free speech in the world. I know now more than ever that we need a place for honest debate and discussion without the hall monitors. This is just the beginning so stay tuned.”

Based on the available data from Amazon, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene‘s (R-Georgia) memoir release has not achieved its desired success.
Approximately one week ago, Greene published her autobiography Mtg through Donald Trump Jr.‘s publishing company. The book delves into Greene’s reflections as one of the most controversial members of Congress.
On Tuesday, editor-in-chief of self-styled “pro-democracy news network” MeidasTouch Ron Fliipkowski noticed the book’s low rating in the Amazon sellers list.
Mtg currently holds the position of 9,805 on Amazon’s Best Seller list.

Alyssa Farah Griffin knows that not everyone will always agree with her takes on “The View.” But, if she ever gets to a point where she’s saying objectively crazy things, she simply wants to be dragged away from the table, and taken outside “Old Yeller style.”
The ABC host admitted that during Wednesday’s episode, as she and her co-hosts discussed the downfall of Tucker Carlson, particularly as laid out in CNN host Brian Stelter’s new book. According to Stelter’s reporting, Carlson was fired not just because he spread conspiracy theories and misinformation, but also because he “thought he was untouchable,” as Whoopi explained it.
For Alyssa Farah Griffin, that particular nugget was the most interesting facet, seemingly indicating that Carlson said and did things simply because he felt he could.

Jon Hamm’s Paul Marks, who burst into “The Morning Show” scene in Season 3, wasn’t inspired by just one tech mogul or finance billionaire, but he is certainly “an amalgamation” of Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and other figures, according to executive producer Michael Ellenberg.
Marks — whom Cory Ellison (Billy Cruddup) courted professionally for a network-saving deal in which Marks acquires Uba — ranges from Jeff Bezos-level wealth and power, with his Hyperion One rocket and other space exploration endeavors (like Bezos’ Blue Origin), to Elon Musk-level shrewdness and tech surveillance background.
Ellenberg sees past the black and white into the gray area surrounding Marks, especially in Episode 6 when some dirt about him resurfaces as Alex (Jennifer Aniston) plans to interview him on her streaming series “Alex Unfiltered.”
“There’s no shortage of tech and finance billionaires who are taking swings inside traditional media, streaming, social media, etc.,” Ellenberg told TheWrap.

The ruthless, decades-long sibling rivalry that inspired “Succession” is coming to a quiet close, as Rupert Murdoch hands the keys to Fox and News Corp to his eldest son Lachlan. But with the less-hands-on son taking over from the business and media legend, experts say this family saga is far from over.
Murdoch for decades was concerned about his successor, and long wanted one of his three children with his second wife — Elisabeth, Lachlan and James — to take over, at one point intentionally plunging them into a lengthy succession battle. Besides being the oldest son, Lachlan also had the advantage of sharing his father’s right-wing political ideology, and his heir-apparent status became clear in recent years as he ascended within Fox Corp.
But analysts suggest that Lachlan, 52, will struggle to fill his father’s legendary shoes, at a particularly challenging time for Fox News.

When Apple TV+ first launched, one of its marquee shows was undoubtedly "The Morning Show." Starring Steve Carell, Jennifer Aniston, and Reese Witherspoon as the anchors of a popular morning talk show in trouble, it quickly gained notice for its star-studded cast as much as for its deliberate parallels to the upheavals in real-life broadcast journalism of the time.
Over the seasons, the series has become less directly based on real-life events, but echoes of familiar stories still remain.
Is "The Morning Show" Based on a True Story?
When the first season of "The Morning Show" debuted in 2019, it centered on a badly behaved, popular man anchor on a beloved morning show, which seemed almost ripped from the headlines. Mitch Kessler, the fictional anchor in hot water (played by Carell), is at the center of a sexual misconduct scandal, including the discovery of a remote "close door" button under his office desk.

CNN, whose brief foray into subscription streaming was snuffed out shortly after the close of the WarnerMedia-Discovery merger in April 2022, is officially getting real estate on Max.
A new offering, CNN Max, will be added to the streaming service in what Warner Bros. Discovery called an “open beta” on September 27. It will consist of a 24/7 stream pulled from the news network’s U.S. and international feeds, with a sprinkling of original fare, with user feedback welcomed. For many reasons, some having to do with contracts with pay-tv operators, it won’t be a full-over-the top version of linear CNN, and certain talent and new shows like the new 9 p.m. hour hosted by Kaitlan Collins will not be in the mix.
Wbd CEO David Zaslav hinted at the new venture during the company’s quarterly earnings call several weeks ago, saying news and sports make SVOD platforms “come alive.

CNN anchor Laura Coates has moved to CAA for representation, a move that could signal a new era of influence for the talent-agency giant at the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed news outlet.
In a broad overhaul of CNN’s schedule, Coates was recently named to anchor a new 11 p.m. hour at CNN, “Laura Coates Live,” where she will follow Abby Philip, who will hold forth at 10. CAA also represents Erin Burnett, who anchors CNN’s 7 p.m. hour. All told, CAA will represent two of five of the anchors who appear during CNN’s schedule between 7 p.m. to midnight., which usually represent some of the network’s most-watched hours.
In years past, CNN’s primetime was dominated by rival agency UTA, which continues to have a strong roster at CNN. The agency represents Philip — who left CNN for UTA — as well as Anderson Cooper, Jake Tapper, Don Lemon and Alisyn Camerota.

Warner Bros. Discovery appears to have bigger digital plans for Charles Barkley and Anderson Cooper.
Warner Bros. Discovery plans to introduce a more robust offering of sports and news content to its Max streaming service in the near future, executives said during a conference call Thursday with Wall Street analysts, an effort they no doubt hope will give lend the venue an edge over rivals.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said Thursday that the company, which operates CNN and has a robust portfolio of NBA, MLB and NHL rights has “a real strategic plan that we are finalizing” regarding sports. He also noted that “news and sports are important. They are differentiators. They are compelling. They make these platforms come alive.”
A Warner Bros. Discovery spokesman declined to elaborate beyond the executive’s remarks.

Tommy Tuberville has finally cleared the bar of acknowledging that white nationalists are racist. “White nationalists are racists,” he told reporters after leaving the Senate floor on Tuesday.
The admission — which came a day after the Alabama senator told CNN it was a matter of “opinion” whether white nationalists are racist — didn’t come easy. He initially responded to questioning by arguing that the idea that white nationalists are racist is part of the Democratic spin machine: “I’m totally against racism, and if the Democrats want to say white...

CNN has attached a name and a launch date for Kaitlan Collins’ new primetime show.
“The Source with Kaitlan Collins” is set to premiere in its 9 p.m. Et timeslot on Monday, July 10. The new show, whose name vaguely references the network’s now-canceled “Reliable Sources,” hosted by Brian Stelter, will replace “CNN Primetime,” in the 9 p.m. hour, which Collins has been hosting over the past few weeks.
The new show will officially shift Collins off of “CNN This Morning” to primetime, leaving Collins’ co-host Poppy Harlow to host the morning program with a rotation of CNN guest anchors without a permanent co-host. While former CEO Chris Licht, who was ousted from the network in early June, lined up the re-imagined morning program in fall 2022 with Collins, Harlow and Don Lemon, the trio has since been broken up after Lemon exited the network in April.

After spending months keeping CNN from expanding into streaming, parent company Warner Bros. Discovery appears to have changed its mind.
Warner Bros. Discovery is exploring ways to get more CNN programing on to its Max streaming service, according to a person familiar with the matter, looking at the news outlet’s broader portfolio to see what content might work. Executives will have to navigate agreements with CNN’s traditional distributors that often require cable and satellite companies get first access to CNN’s live broadcasts.
Yet CNN’s rivals have grappled with similar obstacles and found ways to repurpose the news and opinion shows they run. The Fox Nation streaming outlet runs Fox News Channel’s opinion programs a day later. The abrupt yet not-all-too-surprising exit of Chris Licht from CNN is a bit of a relief for staffers who thought he was the wrong person for the job, but whoever succeeds him at the cable news network will face many of the same headwinds.
Declining ratings and profits are the immediate challenges, but the longer-term project will be to carve out CNN’s place in an era of cord-cutting and streaming.
Speculation over who would succeed Licht after the news broke of his exit Wednesday quickly focused on Amy Entelis, CNN’s executive vice president for talent and content development, as a potential permanent CEO. Entelis was among the executives named among interim leaders of the network, as she was last year after Jeff Zucker’s abrupt resignation.
The buzz over who may be the next CEO may not be as important as just what Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav wants.

CEO Chris Licht apologized to CNN staffers during the network’s 9 a.m. editorial call on Monday after the Atlantic ran a devastating profile of the chief executive on Friday.

And for that, I am sorry,” Licht said, according to a Twitter thread by the network’s former chief media correspondent Brian Stelter.
According to the profile, Licht told former president Donald Trump to “have fun” during his town hall on the network in May and knew that the crowd’s makeup skewed more towards Maga enthusiasts than the “GOP-leaning independents” CNN originally claimed would occupy these seats. CNN and CEO Chris Licht came in for ferocious criticism over the chaotic town hall the cable news network held with former president Donald Trump on Wednesday.
Amid his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump sat down with CNN This Morning anchor Kaitlan Collins at the event held in New Hampshire. The 70-minute town hall was populated by mostly Trump supporters and likely Republican voters, and the former president was able to dominate proceedings, overwhelming Collins who tried in vain to correct Trump’s statements and falsehoods about issues including the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, a federal abortion ban, immigration and the war in Ukraine.
A particularly shocking exchange occurred over E. Jean Carroll, who had this week been awarded $5 million in damages after a New York jury held Trump liable for sexual abuse and defamation against the writer. Among other things, Trump once again claimed he did not know who Carroll...

CNN is under fire for normalizing Donald Trump — an accusation that the network faced in 2016, when it gave him wall-to-wall coverage and multiple on-air appearances.
On May 9, the former “Apprentice” star was found liable for sexual abuse and battery in Manhattan civil court via the lawsuit brought by E. Jean Carroll. The verdict arrived a little over a month after Trump, who also served as President of the United States from 2017 to 2021, also was charged with 34 felony counts related to hush money payments made to an adult film star.

Following the settlement of the defamation lawsuit filed by Dominion Voting Systems against Fox News, much of the discussion has been about the $787.5 million that the Murdoch-owned cable channel agreed to pay Dominion, the lack of an on-air acknowledgment for Fox’s part in spreading lies about the company’s non-existent plot to fabricate vote totals during the 2020 presidential election, or any sort of apology from Fox executives or anchors.
Then last week, Fox News announced that it had parted ways with its most popular primetime anchor Tucker Carlson, causing shock and confusion across the entire cable news industry. While these stories are undeniably massive and have far-reaching consequences, there is another Fox News thread that has the potential to impact even more people than actually even watch the cable network.

After a week-long hiatus, “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert came out swinging Monday, where there was only one major target in his crosshairs: recently fired Fox personality Tucker Carlson.
“We’ve been off the air for a week. Do you know who else has? Tucker Carlson,” Colbert said at the top of his monologue.
Thus began Colbert’s onslaught against the embattled host. While telling his audience about the many scandalous messages Carlson sent, including one that called a Fox executive the c-word, Colbert changed the common joke about the word from “See You Next Tuesday” to “See You Never, Tucker.” He then poked fun at his love of Russia and “tempting” job offer from Russian State Media. “Up until now, he’s been representing Russia pro bono,” Colbert said. He also quipped that Carlson should become the pillow for My Pillow CEO Mike Lindell.

James Corden said his final goodbye to The Late Late Show last Friday, April 28, bringing an end to the long-running late-night talk show, which first began airing in January 1995 with host Tom Snyder. However, according to sources cited by Los Angeles Magazine, the Corden-fronted show was losing CBS as much as $20 million a year. The report states that The Late Late Show cost the network between $60 million to $65 million a year to produce but was netting less than $45 million. “It was simply not sustainable,” an executive allegedly told ex-cnn anchor Brian Stelter, who wrote the LA Magazine article. “CBS could not afford [Corden] anymore.” “Even if Corden had wanted to stay in his seat, there was bound to be a late-night reckoning.” Stetler continued. “He would have faced a multimillion-dollar pay cut or painful staff reductions or both, according to two sources who worked with him closely.” The final episode aired last Friday,...

Don Lemon’s abrupt firing on Monday just moments after he co-hosted “CNN This Morning” sent shockwaves throughout the news industry and now the reasons behind why CNN gave the anchor his walking papers are coming into focus.
Speculation was rampant both internally and externally Monday as Lemon’s colleagues and media peers wondered why exactly the anchor was fired: Was it the Nikki Haley comments that were deemed misogynistic? The heated interview with GOP presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy? An on-set clash with co-host Kaitlan Collins? Was it the morning show’s low ratings? It was all the above, apparently.
According to insiders, the decision wasn’t related to any one thing but rather a sum of the parts. And it certainly didn’t help Lemon that internal research showed that he was “not working” with CNN’s female-skewing audience in the morning, a network executive told TheWrap.

As the news that both Tucker Carlson and Don Lemon were out at their respective networks hit the front pages this morning, a slew of boldfaced names began to react, chiefly to Carlson’s departure.
Newsmax CEO Christopher Ruddy used it as an opportunity to plug his own network.
“For a while Fox News has been moving to become establishment media and Tucker Carlson’s removal is a big milestone in that effort,” he said in a statement. “Millions of viewers who liked the old Fox News have made the switch to Newsmax and Tucker’s departure will only fuel that trend.”

Brian Stelter is getting ready to write a new chapter in his ongoing analysis of Fox News Channel.
The former anchor of CNN’s “Reliable Sources” is gearing up for “Network of Lies: The Epic Saga of Fox News, Donald Trump, and the Battle for American Democracy,” a look at the Fox Corp. cable outlet’s trajectory following the 2020 election and through the much-scrutinized defamation trial brought against it by Dominion Voting Systems. That court proceeding is slated to open Monday.
“Network of Lies” is billed as a sequel of sorts to Stelter’s 2020 book “Hoax,” which offered a deep look behind the mechanics of how Fox News Channel produces its news coverage and opinion programming. Stelter’s new book proposes to examine how Fox News proceeded after the election of President Joe Biden and how it oriented itself after President Donald Trump left office.
