Tennis commentator Mark Petchey clarified and defended his audacious claim, calling teenage phenom Coco Gauff 'the best women's athlete to ever play tennis'.
Gauff won a maiden US Open title in early September in front of her home fans. It was a seismic moment in her career and the kind of tectonic shift that catapulted Gauff from a potential elite to an actual elite. Gauff has since risen to a career-high ranking of World No. 3.
Petchey, a former Atp pro himself, and currently working as a match commentator, is one of the most eloquent and revered men on the booth. But his recent bold claim of Gauff surprised many tennis fans , who felt that the veteran commentator had gone over the top with his assessment.
The 53-year-old took to social media platform X to respond to a comment from former American player Tim Mayotte who felt that it was still...

Former player and current tennis analyst Mark Petchey backed Coco Gauff for future success due to her tremendous physical talents.
Many have observed over the years that Coco Gauff could have easily played multiple sports based on physical talent alone, as she's incredibly quick, very nimble, and just blessed with excellent tools. She chose tennis, and she certainly shouldn't regret the choice, especially after finally becoming a Grand Slam champion recently .
All of her talents were on display in the 2023 US Open final, as she overcame a slow start by frustrating her opponent with her tremendous defensive skills. Not many players are capable of that because they haven't been blessed with her physique, and ultimately, that proved key. Once the match started turning, she used her tennis talents to finish Sabalenka off.
Former player Mark Petchey is certain she's going to be amazing in the future because of that alone.

Carlos Alcaraz is looking very unbeatable at the moment but Nick Kyrgios doesn't think that he has no weakness.
Alcaraz has proven himself to be one of the best players in the world. He's the number one player on the Atp Tour right now, after replacing Novak Djokovic following the Italian Open . He's also in the semi-final of the 2023 Roland Garros after crushing Stefanos Tsitsipas, a spectacle that Nick Kyrgios probably enjoyed.
Even so, the Australian doesn't really think that Alcaraz has no weakness in his game. It might appear that way and even the Spaniard hinted at thinking something similar earlier at the event. Alcaraz does consider himself a complete player but even so, Kyrgios basically explained that any player has no weaknesses until somebody exposes them.
We were saying similar things about Medvedev once upon a time. Not saying a see one, I’m just saying, until someone exposes them,...

The scheduling of tennis tournaments seems to be an impossible thing to handle recently for organizers as we saw at the 2023 Italian Open.
When players come to Atp & Wta events, they usually don't have many requests. They want a nice place to sleep in, good transportation, and a gym so they can train. One of the things players also like to have is a schedule that doesn't make their life more difficult.
But sometimes, the tournament organizers fail to do just that. Only recently at the Australian Open, we saw Andy Murray play until 4 Am. It didn't take long before Iga Swiatek had a late-night finish in Madrid, and Alexander Zverev faced a challenge with a short recovery time in Rome.
And even though those are also difficult to deal with for players, late-night finishes are probably something that they experienced previously in their careers, and until they play on the very next day,...

Former player Mark Petchey believes that Andrey Rublev's time will come and he will be a grand slam champion one day.
Rublev looked like a supreme talent a few years ago collecting trophies semi-regularly. His career didn't follow that trajectory recently as some younger players have come out and overtaken him when it comes to both ranking and results.
It seems as if his career kind of stalled out a bit in the past year but former player Mark Petchey is not worried about it. He clearly sees grand-slam-winning talent in the Russian and believes that with time, he will get it done.
A guy like Rublev has got to think that that quarterfinal spot which he has been stuck on a number of times already in the course of his career since 2017 US Open, that he is going to get further than that. And if he gets further than that,...
