Production designer Patrick O’Keefe drew inspiration from brutalist architecture, graphic artist Syd Mead and British punk band The Sex Pistols when animating the world of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
As Miles Morales crosses path with different Spider-People from other dimensions, it was up to O’Keefe and his team of animators to create visual worlds that reflect those counterparts.
With Variety, he breaks down the looks of each world and shares his favorite easter eggs that pay homage to the Canadian animators who worked on the film.

“Whenever it comes to developing anything for the film, I’m always asking myself, whose point of view are we seeing this from? And what does it need to do?
In animation, we have this awesome opportunity because we don’t have to take the look of the world around us for granted, it can be anything we want. We’re going...

[This story contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.]
It has become common practice for studios to cram in every single reference and Easter egg they can into superhero movies, perhaps so that dedicated fans will pore over each frame and return to the film to find more. Whether that be license plates that spell out specific comic issues or more abstract things like thematic parallels reproduced by repeated imagery, the Spider-Man films are probably the most dense in this regard, drawing from an almost endless history of transmedia properties, be they video games, movies, comics and even cereals.
And now, with the release of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Sony Pictures Animation has given itself the license to push this practice further than ever before as the film expands into the vast and endless Spider-Verse. No matter the interpretation of Spider-Man, you can bet that they’ve got their own universe. So,...

There’s always another multiverse to explore in the Spider-Man world. Following the record-smashing success of live-action “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” the Sony-Marvel property lands another installment with animated “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse,” in theaters June 2, 2023.
The sequel to the 2018 Oscar-winning “Into the Spider-Verse” will focus on the romance between Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) while continuing the multiverse-bending action adventure. The film finds Miles and Gwen as they team up with other Spider-People “to face off with a villain more powerful than anything they have ever encountered.” There will be more than 240 new characters introduced.
Issa Rae and Oscar Isaac join the ensemble cast, with Jake Johnson also reprising his previous Peter B. Parker role for the sequel. Jason Schwartzman voices new villain The Spot, inspired by an ink blob on canvas.

Much like the Super-Collider at the center of its multiverse plot, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” opened a rift that continues to impact the world around it. Its influence can still be felt across the film industry, from “The Mitchells vs. The Machines” and “The Bad Guys” to the new “Puss in Boots” blending CG animation with illustrated looks — showing not only what superhero movies could do better, but how Hollywood animation as a whole could improve.
For the sequel to the Oscar winner, the filmmakers are not just resting on their laurels, but doubling down on the innovation of “Into the Spider-Verse.” This means inventing new tools for animation and challenging the characters with emotional stories. But arguably the biggest innovation is the way “Across the Spider-Verse” challenges the superhero film industrial complex and its treatment of comic book artists, by making them a part of the film’s development.

Spider-Man, meet your new foe.
To cap off an Annecy presentation that saw 15 minutes of work in progress footage screen for the first time before a public audience, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” directors Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson lifted the veil on the film’s big bad – an enigmatic antagonist known as The Spot.
“For those who are not hardcore canon nerds, The Spot is one of the deepest cuts in Spider-Man’s rogue gallery,” said co-director Powers. “But he has a super-power that really excited our entire team: His entire body is covered in little interdimensional portals that can send him anywhere he wants to go.”
Voiced by Jason Schwartzman, the villain will use those portals as weapons against returning webslingers Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld), while bringing new heroes from across the Spider-Verse like Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac) and Jessica Drew (Issa Rae) into the fray.

The trailer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) gives us plenty to be excited about, but it’s also all about following up on the two big cliffhangers from the first movie. The main part of the trailer focuses on the aftermath of the final scene of the first movie, where Gwen called out to Miles from beyond his reality. The more exciting part of the trailer has Miles Morales flying uncontrollably through the multiverse, almost finding stability until being tackled in mid-air by yet another Spider-Man.
Of course, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen this guy. Spider-Man 2099 appeared in the post-credits of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, voiced by Oscar Isaac, and it’s hinted that he may have had more to do with the movie’s plot than a teaser gag referencing an internet meme.

This year the character with the longest name in comics, and one of the coolest alter egos in comics, turns thirty years old. I am of course talking about the time-travelling mutant bad-ass that is Nathan Christoper Charles Dayspring Summers aka Cable. Although he has also been known as Askani’son, Chosen One, Traveler and Soldier X. Thirty years may not seem a lot at first glance when up against industry titans like Batman and Superman, or ever his fellow X-Men but when you consider Cable debuted as Cable in 1990 pre the comic market crash and then he came out the other side and years later was the co star of a very successful movie and you could argue he is more popular than ever! Then I would say things have turned out pretty decent for the baby with the glowing eye.
What word best sums up Cable? How about convoluted?...

Worlds keep colliding in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. So what the hell was going on in those final moments?
Spoiler sense tingling! This article contains Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse spoilers. Seriously, why would you click on this link without realizing that spoilers are going to happen?
Like nearly any superhero movie from the past few years, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has stuff after the credits. It’s just that this one may have the best post-credits sequence of the year. At the very least, it’s on the level of the mid-credits stuff in Deadpool 2. Plus it’s just a wonderful movie in general and you should really see it.
What happens: So we get some very stylized initial credits with a psychedelic Spider-Man party followed by a sad dedication to Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Regular credits kick in, we get to hear Spider-Man’s Christmas song in full,...

Two teenagers – one poor and one rich, one black and one white, one boy and one girl, one powered by darkness and the other by light – become one unstoppable crimefighting duo. That's the basic brief on Cloak and Dagger, the young heroes set to be the next stars of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's TV empire.
Cloak and Dagger hits Freeform on June 7th, marking the network's first foray into the McU. Helmed by showrunner Joe Pokaski (a superhero veteran with credits on Heroes and Daredevil), Cloak and Dagger stars The Night Of...

Rob Liefeld, comic book maestro and the creative genius behind the Merc With a Mouth, fanboys over Nathan Summers (Aka Cable) in this really rather awesome behind-the-scenes photo from Deadpool 2.
First unveiled via Liefeld’s own Instagram feed, the image finds Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) between takes, as the actor shares a laugh with the man responsible for his on-screen anti-hero in the first place – Liefeld is one of four credited with the creation of Cable, alongside Chris Claremont, Louise Simonson and Rick Leonardi.
It’s not a particularly revealing photo by any means, so don’t go in expecting any clues pertaining to Deadpool 2‘s story; instead, this is a welcome peek behind the curtain, as it gives fans a chance to see Rob Liefeld on set. And let’s face it: having the creator of Deadpool present between takes can only be a good thing.

Like many children born in the 1980s, I became well acquainted with Hanna-Barbera cartoons while eating sugar-filled cereals on Saturday mornings. Now, three decades later, my dietary habits haven’t changed much and I’m here reading Scooby Apocalypse, one of several properties from the legendary animation studio to be recently reimagined by DC.
Before we proceed any further, let’s make one thing perfectly clear: DC is in no way changing Scooby-Doo canon or saying this is the new status quo. Simply put, this is what happens when a handful of creators love a specific set of characters and want to do something fun and different involving them. In fact, DC still publishes comics based on the classic Scooby-Doo cartoons we all know, so please cut the “they ruined my childhood” nonsense.
Although the project somewhat sprung from the mind of Jim Lee, I’m not sure if it...
