When Ron Nyswaner first read Thomas Mallon‘s novel “Fellow Travelers,” he knew that the central love story would make for great television. That love story between closeted society man Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer) and the idealistic yet naive Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey) anchors the Showtime limited series of the same name. For Nyswaner, the Oscar-nominated writer of “Philadelphia” who served as creator, showrunner and writer on the series, the goal was to create something more than just a gay love story. “This isn’t a gay show,” he says in an exclusive video chat with Gold Derby (watch above). “We’re doing a human drama here. We’re doing American history.
Nyswaner’s version of “Fellow Travelers” is less of an adaptation, but more of an expansion of the source material. Mallon’s novel doesn’t go beyond 1957, so Nyswaner created storylines for the characters that spanned the protests over the Vietnam War,...

Fellow Travelers stars Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey waded into the sex-scenes debate at Deadline Contenders TV event Saturday. The actors got intimate on the set as characters Hawk and Tim in the Showtime limited series based on Thomas Mallon’s book that follows their love affair in the 1950s.
“I just feel like the characters were never the same after the scenes as they were before, which to me is always a sign that it’s integral to the story,” said Bomer, who plays Hawk. “The way they connected was so reflective of their societal conditions. It was therapeutic. It’s not always the most comfortable thing, but it was always an extension of their relationship.”
Bailey, who plays Tim, said the characters could not be open about their sexuality in the ‘50s. So their love scenes became the only place they truly could be themselves.

Ron Nyswaner will soon be traveling to New York to reunite with his Writers Guild of America East fellows for a grand occasion. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter, producer and showrunner has been selected to receive the Walter Bernstein Award at the 76th Writers Guild Awards at New York’s Edison Ballroom on April 14.
The honor — named after the late screenwriter who was blacklisted for his political views only to persevere and get his career back on track with such credits as Fail-Safe, Semi-Tough and Yanks — is presented to writers “who have demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity,” per the organization.
Nyswaner has been doing that for pretty much his entire career. A prime example is Jonathan Demme’s 1993 film Philadelphia. Penned by Nyswaner, the Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington-starrer was the first major Hollywood film to dramatize the real-world...

Ron Nyswaner, the Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind films including Philadelphia and The Painted Veil and most recently the Matt Bomer-starring Showtime miniseries Fellow Travelers, is receiving this year’s Walter Bernstein Award from the Writers Guild of America East.
The honor will be bestowed April 14 at the WGA Awards’ East Coast ceremony in New York, which takes place concurrently with the WGA’s West Coast ceremony in Los Angeles.
The Bernstein award goes to writers “who have demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity.” Nyswaner becomes the second person to win the award, after Jelani Cobb won in 2017 for his Frontline documentary Policing the Police.

In front of a very enthusiastic audience of more than 600 fans, students and SAG-AFTRA members, actor Matt Bomer shared an unvarnished take on the heartache, hurdles and proudest moments he’s experienced in his 20-year film and television career.
Bomer appeared at the annual TV festival in Atlanta to accept The Hollywood Reporter’s Trailblazer Award – presented to him by current Scad acting student Eric Ackerman – for his contributions to storytelling. Bomer was specifically honored for his amplification of Lgtbq+ stories and characters in projects such as HBO’s The Normal Heart, Netflix’s 2024 Oscar contender Maestro and Showtime’s Fellow Travelers, to name just a few.
The award was created in 2023 to acknowledge artists whose work, often without fanfare, reflects a commitment to telling stories previously marginalized by Hollywood. Recent honorees have included David Oyelowo, Niecy Nash and Eva Longoria.

“Johnny B! Johnny B!” Matt Bomer exclaims as he logs in to Zoom to join his Fellow Travelers co-star, Jonathan Bailey, to do press for their critically acclaimed Showtime limited series.
“Hey, Matty Mo,” Bailey replies.
The actors spent about six months filming the eight-episode series — so, of course, they’ve established a playful bond. On this particular day, they’ve even given each other nicknames.

Fellow Travelers is the period gay odyssey that we’ve been missing. The show, which spans three decades of sheer pain, is a historical tragedy that will most certainly leave you dewy-eyed. The Showtime miniseries follows two men who meet around the time of the Army-McCarthy hearings and their saga thereafter. It’s a poignant tale of what used to be, but it’s also quite unfortunately relevant today. The show is based on the novel of the same name by author Thomas Mallon. As much as this is an epic love story, it’s also a history lesson for the liberated. Matt Bomer and Jonathan Bailey are both unstoppable in their leading roles as Hawk and Tim, who leave memorable impressions by the end of the series, but all the other characters are just as compelling. Keep your tissues ready for this one if you haven’t seen it yet,...

The new Showtime limited series “Fellow Travelers” received rave reviews and is now being embraced by awards groups, with three bids at the Critics Choice Awards and a pair of nominations at the Golden Globes. This eight-part period piece is an adaptation of the 2007 book of the same name by Thomas Mallon. Centered on fictional characters Hawk Fuller (Matt Bomer) and Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), it tells an expansive love story inspired by the breakthroughs and setbacks American gay men experienced throughout the second half of the 20th century.

President Joe Biden sent out a proclamation earlier this year declaring April 27, 2023, as the 70th anniversary of the Lavender Scare. It was the height of the Cold War and the blacklist seventy years ago as Senator Joseph McCarthy was hellbent on ridding the country of Communists with his witch-hunt thus destroying countless lives in his wake.
It was in this atmosphere that President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed an executive order banning Lgbtqi+ Americans from serving in the federal government. Some 5,000-10,000 people were investigated, interrogated and lost their jobs because they were considered a threat to national security and according to Biden’s proclamation “unworthy of public trust. Employees who were fired under these policies often lost future employment…even relationships with their families. Many endured poverty and public disgrace. Some took their own lives as a result of the trauma they had to bear. “

If films and series about queer Americans in the 20th century can sometimes feel like a march through collective trauma, well, much of the 20th century was traumatic for the LGBTQ community. And Showtime’s new limited series “Fellow Travelers” (adapted from Thomas Mallon’s novel by Ron Nyswaner) includes a lot of it, from the lavender panic of the McCarthy era through the White Night riots in the aftermath of Harvey Milk’s assassination to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s. But woven throughout those momentous events, along with the star-crossed romance between Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer) and Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), are historically accurate moments of queer joy. Yes, gay culture existed (and thrived!) pre-Stonewall.

The fellows headlining Fellow Travelers both have enviable acting résumés, but perhaps their roles on the Showtime series will be their greatest yet. Based on the novel by Thomas Mallon, the decade-spanning drama stars Jonathan Bailey and Matt Bomer as two men whose relationship traverses the McCarthyism of the 1950s, the wartime upheaval of the ‘60s, the disco hedonism of the ‘70s, and the AIDS crisis of the ’80s, as they face obstacles both in the world and within themselves, Showtime says. In 2007, Matt Bomer would have been a little too young to play Don Draper on Mad Men. (Jon Hamm has six years on him.) In most other ways, though, he would have been perfect. Ron Nyswaner, the executive producer and writer of the Showtime limited series Fellow Travelers, says that he feared there were three strikes against getting it made: “It’s period, it’s political and it’s gay.”

It’s the 1980s. White picket fences line the most picturesque suburban neighborhood that Ronald Reagan could ever imagine. Hawkins Fuller (Matt Bomer) is celebrating a long-sought after promotion with his perfect family and friends when a familiar face drops by with a gift. Suddenly, Hawk flashes back to his past, to the night that President Eisenhower was elected when he met Timothy Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey), the idealistic Ike supporter and good Catholic boy who arrived in Washington D.C. to do some good. We know how their story ends before it’s begun, but what follows is a decades-long affair set to the backdrop of intense political dangers and the burgeoning gay rights movement.

The love that once dared not speak its name is further clouded by political paranoia in Fellow Travelers, Showtime‘s fascinating historical drama, loosely adapted by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia) from Thomas Mallon’s novel. Much of the eight-part limited series is set in early-1950s Washington, D.C., where firebrand senator Joseph McCarthy’s (Chris Bauer) relentless crusade against “subversives and deviants” in the government, and later the military, tarnished and ruined many an innocent life. Fellow Travelers focuses less on red-baiting than on the Lavender Scare, with closeted homosexuals hounded and persecuted as potential security risks. Seemingly “bulletproof” through this period is suave war hero Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller, a mid-level bureaucrat who advises a principled senator (Linus Roache) by day, wooing the politician’s daughter (Girls’ stoic Allison Williams) for cover as he engages in anonymous sex with men, avoiding any emotional attachments. Until he meets Tim Laughlin...

Circumstances throughout history have forced people to hide defining aspects of themselves. Yet, there is a profound cruelty in denying the truth of one’s being, even if it is a means of survival. Based on the bestselling novel by Thomas Mallon and adapted for television by Ron Nyswaner, “Fellow Travelers” is a sweeping love story spanning three decades. It’s a narrative about what it means to simultaneously spend a life completely with someone while entirely separate from them. The Washington, D.C.- set drama series is told through the perspectives of two very different men. Hawkins “Hawk” Fuller (Matt Bomer) is a charismatic federal bureaucrat whose stoic demeanor and hypermasculine charm enable him to neatly tuck his sexuality away, mostly evading suspicion. In contrast, Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey) is the boyish new assistant to Sen. Joseph McCarthy (an unrecognizable Chris Bauer), full of idealistic views and a...

In the most lacerating episode of Max’s dearly departed comedy The Other Two, the characters attend the premiere of a Broadway show titled 8 Gay Men with AIDS: A Poem in Many Hours. Wondering about future roles for his Method-actor boyfriend, who stars in the play, Drew Tarver’s Cary wonders, “Is there anything coming up that is prestigious and gay, but doesn’t have, like, nonstop trauma in it?”
The fact is, we’re not at a point, as a society, where we can stop telling stories of trauma. There remains a cultural need for narratives that foreground the AIDS epidemic, that acknowledge the horrors of the Holocaust and slavery. That said, if you’re going to do a trauma-fueled, decades-spanning odyssey of gay life from McCarthy to Reagan, weaving in the Red Scare and the early days of AIDS, comparisons to Angels in America are going to be inevitable.

Apple TV+ has released the trailer for “The Buccaneers,” a new drama series based on Edith Wharton’s unfinished novel. “The Buccaneers” will debut its first three episodes on Nov. 8, followed by the release of new episodes weekly every Wednesday through Dec. 13.
Olivia Rodrigo’s “all-american bitch” plays throughout the trailer as a group of carefree, fun-loving American girls enter the tightly corseted London season of the 1870s, according to the release. An Anglo-American culture clash ensues due to the girls’ refreshing disregard for centuries of tradition. The buccaneers’ hearts are set on much more than just securing husbands and titles. “Saying ‘I do’ is just the beginning,” to quote the logline.
The music-driven series combines 1870 English aristocracy with a modern soundtrack produced by Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint. “The Buccaneers” will feature songs from today’s top female performers including Taylor Swift, Boygenius, Maggie Rogers, Bikini Kill, Yeah Yeah Yeahs,...
