There are a plenty of longtime Saturday Night cast members, yet there were no big exits — or hints of departures — on tonight’s Season 49 finale of the venerable NBC late-night program.
No SNL veterans were tearing up at the end of their sketches like Kate McKinnon did in the 2022 finale, it was all smiles and fist bumps at the curtain call, and, after another brutal joke swap, Colin Jost and Michael Che wrapped their 10th season together on Weekend Update by wishing everyone a great summer.
This was to be expected, given that no one from this year’s 17-strong troupe would willingly miss next year’s big celebrations – The Big 50.
Host Jake Gyllenhaal set the stage for what is to come in his opening monologue, noting that the finale was “the last episode before the big anniversary season.”

Bowen Yang is opening up about the mental and physical impact of trying to juggle Wicked filming and Saturday Night Live at the same time.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the comedian-actor said it became “mentally fraying” flying back and forth between the Wicked set in London and NBC’s sketch comedy show in New York City, even causing SNL creator Lorne Michaels to worry.
“This is when Lorne Michaels comes in,” Yang said. “Whatever you think about the situation, however you think it’s unique to you, however you think you might be the exception to the rule, Lorne is here to be like, ‘Actually, it might not be so good on the body for you to fly back and forth between New York and London to go shoot a movie.’”

Bowen Yang realized that he couldn’t defy gravity — or sleep deprivation — when filming “Wicked.”
The “SNL” star told Vanity Fair that he found it “mentally fraying” to fly back and forth between the “Wicked” production in London and his weekly sketch series in New York City. Even “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels seemingly warned Yang against spreading himself too thin.

The 2024 Pen America Literary Gala welcomed hundreds of guests inside Manhattan’s Museum of Natural History on Thursday, including several prominent figures from the entertainment industry. Seth Meyers served as emcee for the annual black-tie fundraiser, which recognizes individuals who “celebrate, champion and defend freedom of expression.”
The gala took place following the recent cancellation of the annual Pen America Literary Awards and World Voices Festival. Several Pen-affiliated writers, including nine of those who received nods for the Pen/Jean Stein award for best book, chose to boycott these events in light of the organization’s response to the Israel-Hamas war. Pen America has been under scrutiny as several Pen-affiliated authors have alleged that the free speech and literary organization has favored Israel amidst the war and not properly acknowledged the violence afflicted upon Palestinian writers and journalists.

There’s a story Alfred Hitchcock always liked to tell about how, when he was five years old, his father dropped him off at the local police station near his home in East London. William Hitchcock left a note for the coppers explaining that his son had been misbehaving. A policeman locked young Alfred in a cell for a few minutes and explained, “This is what we do to naughty boys.”
When Hitchcock recounted that story to Dick Cavett he was in his 70s, but the incident continued to leave a profound mark on the director. He said he was still “terrified of the police” because of that and drew a connection from that to the feelings of guilt and wrong-men-on-the-run paranoia that seeps into so many of his films.
The funny thing is, though, father characters are almost entirely absent from Hitchcock’s work. There are a few: Cedric Hardwicke...

Joe Biden got in a few zingers at his rival Donald Trump, but he devoted a large part of his remarks to the serious threat to democracy.
“Donald has had a few tough days lately. You might call it stormy weather,” Biden quipped, referencing Trump’s current hush money trial.
The president also riffed on reports that Trump dozed off during his trial, calling him “sleepy Don.”
“Trump’s speech was so embarrassing, the statue of Robert E. Lee surrendered again,” he said.
The president, though, devoted a large chunk to his speech to warning of the threat to the democracy and the press’s role in a free society.

It’s the question everyone loves asking: Will Lorne Michaels actually retire after SNL’s milestone 50th season next year?
The Saturday Night Live creator and longtime EP has hinted as much, but add Conan O’Brien to the list of doubters.
“If you took an X-ray of Lorne Michaels, you would see SNL in his bone marrow,” O’Brien tells the Hollywood Reporter in a new interview. “I just don’t see it happening. And I don’t think anyone’s anxious for him to go anywhere.”
“When Franklin Roosevelt died suddenly in April of 1945, he’d been president for 13 years,” O’Brien continued. “There was a whole generation that only knew him. Lorne is the Fdr of comedy. Retiring to his blueberry farm? I’m not buying it.”
O’Brien, of course, isn’t a mere bystander. He worked Michaels with for 23 years–first as a writer on SNL...

In 1989, Dolly Parton hosted Saturday Night Live for the first and only time. While on the show, Parton poked fun at her appearance and parts of her career. Parton has always had a strong sense of humor and hasn’t been afraid to make fun of herself. When she arrived at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, she only had two off-limit areas for the show.
Dolly Parton only had two requests as the host of ‘Saturday Night Live’
Parton spent her opening monologue poking fun at her appearance, proving that little would be off-limits when she hosted. She was happy to be a part of jokes at her own expense. SNL cast member Jan Hooks said this was a quality that made Parton one of her favorite guests. She only had two demands when she arrived to work on the episode.

When Kristen Wiig took the stage in Studio 8H to host “Saturday Night Live” April 6, she achieved one of the most coveted milestones in sketch comedy: joining the Five-Timers Club. One of the show’s longest-running traditions is gifting people who have hosted five times an honorary jacket during their monologue, which typically features appearances from other celebrities in the club.
“I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting,” Wiig said when she took the stage. “So I’m officially in the Five-Timers Club!”
But while Wiig’s monologue did feature plenty of A-list cameos, few actually had the distinction of being Five-Timers. She was quickly visited by Matt Damon, who wore the special jacket despite having only hosted the show twice.

Kristen Wiig returned to Saturday Night Live to host the show for the fifth time, which meant she would be inducted into the five-timers club.
“I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting, so I am officially in the five-timers club,” Wiig said at the beginning of her monologue.
The Palm Royale star then took a moment to say hello to the band and explain that, as a former cast member, it was special to be a part of the exclusive club. Paul Rudd popped up among the audience with his club jacket asking if he could see the script to be part of the sketch where she gets the jacket.
“Oh! No, I’m sorry. I don’t think we’re doing one of those,” Wiig said.

SNL Video: Matt Damon, Paul Rudd, Ryan Gosling and More Welcome Kristen Wiig to the Five-Timers Club
Kristen Wiig is now officially a member of Saturday Night Live’s Five-Timers Club, and she’s in some pretty exclusive company. Well, maybe not that exclusive.
The former SNL cast member kicked off her fifth stint as host on Saturday with a monologue where she celebrated her milestone achievement. But she was soon reminded that more than a few other celebrities have hosted five times as well, with Paul Rudd popping up in the audience wearing his Five-Timers jacket and hoping there’d be a sketch with a bunch of celeb cameos that he could join in on.

It was a big night for Kristen Wiig on Saturday Night Live as she joined the Five-Timers Club. However, she was welcomed into the elite group by a bunch of mostly Non-Five-Timers Club members.
The actress and comedian kicked off her monologue, saying, “I am so happy to be back, and I am so excited because it is my fifth time hosting. So I’m officially in the Five-Timers Club!”
She then took a moment to acknowledge the sketch comedy show’s band, but shortly after, that’s when the celebrity cameos started, beginning with Paul Rudd, who previously joined the club in 2021.
“I also heard a rumor that you might be doing one of those five-timer sketches featuring awesome celebrity cameos,” Rudd said after popping up in the Studio 8H audience. “So, is there like a script or something I could look at for that?” But unfortunately, Wiig informed...

A star-studded group of veteran “Saturday Night Live” guest hosts were on hand this evening to welcome Kristen Wiig into the “Five-Timers Club.” But much to Wiig’s chagrin, most of them haven’t matched her feat of actually hosting “SNL” five times.
The former “Saturday Night Live” cast member made her fifth appearance as host — having previously hit the stage in 2013, 2016 and twice in 2020.
The stolen “SNL” valor actually began with a legit five-timer: Paul Rudd, on hand to welcome her from the audience..
“As a former cast member, it is very special,” Wiig said. “I’m really excited about getting my jacket tonight… they don’t just hand the jackets off to anyone.”
Well, not quite. Soon more stars came out: Matt Damon, Jon Hamm, Martin Short, Will Forte, Fred Armisen, Martin Short and Ryan Gosling. None of whom haven actually hosted five times yet.

Kristen Wiig finds herself in for a rude awakening in this week’s Saturday Night Live promo, when she discovers her old dressing room has been ruined by the show’s new talent.
“I’m finally home,” Wiig says in the promo as she walks down the halls of Studio 8H, where she worked as a castmember from 2005 to 2012.
“The best part of being home returning to your childhood bedroom — or in my case, dressing room,” she continues, adding that executive producer Lorne Michaels “promised they’d always leave it just the way I left it.”
As she approaches the room, Wiig muses that she can’t wait to “see all my old wigs” and “my favorite costumes,” but when she opens the door, she finds her things tossed haphazardly into boxes to make room for a mess caused by current inhabitants of the dressing room — SNL featured players Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker.

“I’m finally home,” a radiant Kristen Wiig says at the top of the first promo for her Saturday Night Live hosting stint this weekend. “And the best part of returning home: Your childhood bedroom — or in my case, dressing room. Lorne promised he’s always leave it just the way I’d left it.”
The former castmember finds that things aren’t as she imagined, however, as Michael Longfellow and Devon Walker have converted Wiig’s former digs into a man cave replete with a sword, lacrosse stick, guitar and video game console.
“Hey Kristine. Lorne said we could have your old room,” says Longfellow as she walks in.
“You like what we did with it?” asks Walker.
Let’s just say Wiig is less than happy.

Jimmy Fallon and Maya Rudolph Reminisce on Will Ferrell’s Various ‘SNL’ Behind-the-Scenes Alter Egos
Maya Rudolph reunited with her former Saturday Night Live castmate Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Tuesday night, where they reminisced over co-star Will Ferrell’s behind-the-scenes antics at Studio 8H.
Fallon asked Rudolph if she remembered a character that the Anchorman star created on set.
“Are you talking about Chip Kudrow or Ron?” interrupted Rudolph.
The host noted that the character he was thinking of was Chip Kudrow, a persona that Ferrell used for an ongoing bit, where he pretended to be Lisa Kudrow’s brother.
Rudolph explained, “Will Ferrell had a character named Chip Kudrow who would just show up at our pitch meetings.”
It’s clear that Ferrell had various alter egos on set, as Fallon asked Rudolph if Chip was the one who wore a referee shirt or overalls. This prompted Fallon to mention another one of the Barbie star’s characters, named Ron.

Seth Meyers is sharing his thoughts on rumors that Lorne Michaels is ready to bid farewell to Saturday Night Live and retiring from the NBC late-night sketch show.
The Late Night host recently made an appearance on Mike Birbiglia’s Working It Out, where the podcast host asked Meyers about Michaels leaving SNL.
“Are you gonna take over for Lorne, or is it Tina [Fey] and then you?” Birbiglia asked, to which Meyers responded, “I think this is a false narrative that Lorne is going anywhere.”
Meyers was a head writer at SNL and worked on the sketch show between 2001 and 2014. The actor doesn’t think Michaels was completely serious when he said he wanted to retire from the comedy show after its 50th season.
“I think it made sense for Lorne — who’s, yeah, got a flair for the dramatic — to say, ‘I think I’ll be done at 50,'” Meyers said.

He’s said it before, and he’ll almost certainly say it again. Seth Meyers does not think that Lorne Michaels will be stepping down from Saturday Night Live anytime soon.

“I’ve always seen Bupkis as a window into my life, since it is so personal and about my struggles and family,” Davidson said ina. statement. “After nearly a decade of my personal life being in the media I wanted a chance to tell my story my way. Of all the work I’ve ever done, Bupkis is by far what I’m most proud of. I am so grateful to Lorne Michaels and Broadway Video, Peacock, Universal Television and the amazing cast and writers for helping me create something honest, funny and heartfelt. I do also feel that this part of my life is finished. I’m very excited for this next chapter and for you guys to see the work.

Former SNL cast members Dana Carvey and David Spade welcomed actress and 1992 SNL host Sharon Stone onto their Fly on the Wall podcast Wednesday, where the trio discussed a wide variety of topics, including Stone’s controversial episode as host.
Stone, whose hit Basic Instinct had recently been released in theaters, remembered being “terrified” during the April 1992 SNL live airing. And that was even before protestors stormed the stage seconds before her opening monologue, resulting in several arrests.
“I came out to do the monologue live, which is super scary … and people stormed the stage, saying they were going to kill me during the opening monologue,” recalled Stone. “The police and security who were in there froze, because they had never seen anything like that happen.”
Stone remarked that Lorne Michaels “personally saved my life” when the protestors stormed the stage.

Dana Carvey is apologizing to Sharon Stone for the “offensive” Saturday Night Live sketch in 1992, which saw her taking her clothes off.
The actress made a recent appearance on the Fly on the Wall With Dana Carvey and David Spade podcast, where she recalled her time hosting the NBC sketch comedy show on April 11, 1992, following the release of her hit movie Basic Instinct.
During their conversation about some of the skits in that particular episode, Carvey pointed out how Stone “was such a good sport” because of “the comedy we did in 1992 with Sharon Stone, we would be literally arrested now.”
One controversial skit that Carvey brought up was the “Airport Security Sketch,” in which male airport security officers, including Carvey who appeared as an Indian security guard, made Stone remove one item of clothing at a time, claiming they needed to check to see if she was carrying anything dangerous.

In an appearance on Dana Carvey and David Spade’s Fly on the Wall podcast, Sharon Stone thanked longtime Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels for saving her life.

Sharon Stone stopped by Dana Carvey and David Spade’s “Fly On The Wall” podcast to discuss the time she hosted “Saturday Night Live” back in April 1992 shortly after the release of her erotic blockbuster “Basic Instinct.” Stone remembered being “terrified” during the live taping as protestors stormed the stage seconds before her monologue. Six men were eventually arrested due to the incident. Stone said “SNL” creator Lorne Michaels “personally saved my life” when the protestors charged.
“I came out to do the monologue live, which is super scary, and a bunch of people started storming the stage saying they were going to kill me during the opening monologue,” Stone recalled. “The security that was in there froze because they never had seen anything like that happen. It’s no huge surprise given that she’s a longtime friend to Saturday Night Live and a former host, but this weekend’s musical guest Ariana Grande is set to also make a sketch appearance on the show.
That’s according to Bowen Yang, who let slip during an interview with Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager that he was working on a sketch with Grande that “might” make it to air, saying “we’ll see… we’ll see if Lorne [Michaels] cuts it.”
Asked if his feelings get hurt when Michaels cuts one of his sketches, Yang responded “at this point I’m [so] fully callused all around my body that I don’t feel anything. So it’s fine. He can do whatever he wants. If it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work.”

“Welcome to Studio 8H! From Lorne + everyone at SNL,” read the note.

When Saturday Night Live castmember Bowen Yang doesn’t entirely approve of a guest on the iconic NBC late night show, he has ways of making it known.
The latest example is Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley, who made a controversial surprise appearance on the show this weekend, during which she played herself in a mock CNN town hall sketch.
Yang, who has been an SNL castmember since 2019, took to Instagram after the show and posted a photo of a backstage note addressed to Haley that read, “Welcome to Studio 8H! From, Lorne + everyone at SNL.” Yang commented on the post, “everyone! :)”
That post has since been deleted, but here is a screenshot:
It’s an attempt at keeping things subtle — like, if you want to assume Yang is being totally sarcastic based merely on everything else known about his public persona, well, that’s on you. Though some...

“Hi, I’m Dakota. Welcome to my home away from home, Studio 8H.”
The first promo for Dakota Johnson’s Saturday Night Live hosting stint dropped today and it’s a sendup of the now-venerable celebrity home tour genre popular with Conde Nast-y publications like Architectural Digest and Vogue.
In it Johnson, who’s making her return to the show after first hosting in 2015, takes viewers on a peppy – and slightly snide – tour of Studio 8H.
Among the jabs:
Johnson says the “8H” in the studio’s name stands for “800, which is how much Lorne bought the studio for in 1812.”
In the makeup room: “Fun fact, all these wigs are made with chinchilla hair. It looks really great on camera, but f*** it stinks!”
She visits Punkie Johnson’s dressing room where general mayhem is afoot before revealing the chaos is a result of one specific demand on her rider.

If anyone should be able to engineer a reunion of “Saturday Night Live” alumni, it should be Dan Aykroyd.

“I’m Mattman.” Those were Matthew Perry’s last public words, in a cryptic Oct. 22 Instagram post accompanied by a photo of the Friends superstar reclining in his hot tub, the lights of the Pacific Palisades shimmering on the horizon. Six days later, Perry was found unresponsive in the same hot tub and was soon after pronounced dead at age 54.

Fallon said his wife encouraged him to take the gig.”‘You have to take this job. You’re one of three human beings to ever do this: David Letterman,...

With the writers’ strike finally coming to an end, it strikes me that this may be a good opportunity to consider adjusting the process by which “Hollywood” evaluates what new films and TV shows should get the greenlight. Somehow in the ever-evolving pitch process, we seem to have replaced curiosity, collaboration and civility with a cool “show me what you got” attitude. It’s worth rethinking how to approach working with the creative community moving forward.
For over 30 years I have worked as a media executive. Recently I’ve been teaching a course at the UCLA Anderson school about the streaming business. During the strike, I’ve had the opportunity...

When Jimmy Fallon returns to the air in October following the end of the WGA strike, it will continue his 14th year as the host of an NBC late night talk show. The “Saturday Night Live” alum got his late night start by taking over for Conan O’Brien as the host of “Late Night,” which Fallon led from March 2, 2009 to Feb. 7, 2014. But Fallon would’ve never booked the “Late Night” gig in the first place had it not been for “SNL” creator Lorne Micheals threatening NBC executives.
“I was leaving ‘SNL’ [in 2004] and so [Michaels] goes, ‘Would you ever want to do it? A talk show?’ I go, ‘I don’t think so,'” Fallon said on the “Strike Force Five” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) to cohosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and John Oliver. “And so I said, ‘Well, in six years ask me and if I, you know, if I’m around,...

Though it’s hard to imagine late night television without Jimmy Fallon now, there was a time when neither he nor NBC saw him in a hosting role.
During the latest episode of the Strike Force Five podcast with Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and John Oliver, the comedian revealed that he initially wasn’t in the running to host Late Night on NBC.
Fallon said after he left Saturday Night Live in 2004, he wanted to pursue a career acting in movies, similar to what Bill Murray or Eddie Murphy did. But around that time, producer Lorne Michaels contacted him about taking over as host of Late Night since Conan O’Brien was considering a move over to The Tonight Show in six years, following Jay Leno’s tenure.
“He [Michaels] goes, ‘Would you ever want to do a talk show?’” Fallon recalled. “I go, ‘I don’t think so.

Jimmy Fallon may now be synonymous with late night TV, but before he was offered his first hosting job, neither Fallon nor NBC wanted him to take the role.
Fallon explained his rocky road to late night in the latest episode of the “Strike Force Five” podcast. After “Saturday Night Live,” Fallon wanted to transition to movies full time and was “hoping to be like Bill Murray or Eddie Murphy.” That’s when “SNL” and NBC super producer Lorne Michaels approached him about taking over “Late Night” from Conan O’Brien.
“He goes, ‘Would you ever want to do a talk show?’ I go, ‘I don’t think so,'” Fallon recalled on the podcast. At the time, Conan O’Brien was planning to take over Jay Leno’s tenure in six years, which means a hosting job would be open. “‘In six years ask me, and if I’m around I’ll think about it,...

Actor Mike Myers is well aware that he shares a similar name to one of cinema’s most notorious slashers. Jamie Lee Curtis wanted to play on the comedian’s connection to her onscreen nemesis, but Myers wasn’t having it.

Curtis has been grappling with several different versions of Halloween slasher Michael Myers over the years. She appeared in 7 out of the 13 Halloween movies playing Laurie Strode. In 1998, she returned to the franchise for Halloween H2O. The movie would focus on Laurie two decades after her first encounter with Michael Myers. Curtis was drawn to the thriller due to the new direction the movie took her character in.
“I knew that if I made a movie 20 years later that showed where Laurie Strode was. That showed Laurie Strode had no...
