All India Rank
Kota is the place where middleclass dreamers send their children for coaching classes to further their dreams (the parents’) of a better life. The children often become a casualty of their guardians’ ambitions. Hence the heartbreaks, hence the suicides.
In Varun Sharma’s All India Rank, Vivek Singh is one such pitiable aspirant. There is nothing remarkable about Vivek, or the actor Bodhisatva Sharma, who plays Vivek. Perhaps the quality of being blissfully nondescript is what made Varun Grover choose whom he did.
Often in films about the working class the actors playing faceless smalltowners stand out like the lead dancer in a chorus dance. Here everyone looks his or her part. There are no filmy flashes even in the songs which are, if I may coin a phrase, retroriginal—representing the heated cheesiness of mofussil mojo in the 1990s—except when Alka Yagnik suddenly blares in...

Identified only by their last name, Tu, the husband and wife in Brief History of a Family have built their comfortably middle-class life together in accordance with China’s one-child policy. Now, in less restrictive times, a chance to expand their nuclear unit arrives in the form of their teenage son’s mysterious new friend. From shifting perspectives, writer-director Lin Jianjie examines the contained volatility of this four-person configuration. His stylistic choices can be spot-on or self-conscious in their artifice, but his debut feature reveals a talent to watch. With its intriguing performances, narrative restraint and unanswered questions, the movie delivers a strong pull of yearning as well as tantalizing currents of suspicion and dread.
The two boys are schoolmates who apparently have never interacted until the day Wei (Lin Muran) makes an overture of friendship that’s less innocent than it seems. The studious loner Shuo (Sun Xilun) becomes...

True Detective has to be one of the most brilliant anthology mystery thriller shows ever made. Originally created by Nic Pizzolatto, the HBO series told a dark and haunting tale through the brilliant performances by Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson in its first season. The quality of the series took a nosedive in its second season and the third season while better from Season 2 didn’t really match the expectation that the inaugural season of True Detective set. Now, we are in Season 4 titled Night Country and with a new creative force behind the series, the fans are getting exactly what they want. So, if you have already finished the much awaited Season 4 of True Detective and are hoping for a renewal, here are some similar shows you could watch while waiting for the new season.

Parental conflicts arise when the younger generation’s goals differ from expectations, particularly in affluent families tied to societal status. Ideally, a parent’s love should outweigh ambitions, but conflicts arise when young individuals’ decisions deviate from expectations, causing tension. Fearing for their children’s prospects, parents may inadvertently stifle freedom, prompting individuals to seek solace outside the family and become susceptible to threats. In Jianjie Lin‘s debut film, Brief History of a Family the narrative tackles these common dissensions between children and their parents from a fresh perspective. The story revolves around a seemingly perfect family of three, whose stability is tested when the son’s mysterious classmate unexpectedly becomes the fourth member and depicts how China’s one-child policy that ended in 2016 still lingers among the middle class. This disrupts the delicate balance between parental guidance and the autonomy crucial for a young person’s growth.

Jianjie Lin’s Brief History of a Family is an immaculate sculpture, one of those art-film thrillers in which every element of every frame is under profound control. There’s no stray detail here, no spontaneous behavioral business for the audience to discover for itself.
The risk of this sort of film is lifelessness, as in any number of thrillers released each year by A24. But the potential benefit is a heightened suspense achieved by our implicit understanding that the filmmakers have the means and ability to do whatever they please. You’re in their hands, and they could be ready to work you over. Lin achieves and sustains this tension, as his eerie, underpopulated frames and pregnant foreshadowing create an understated unease.

Elevated by its consistent visual inventiveness, Chinese writer-director Jianjie Lin’s suspenseful drama “Brief History of a Family” could appear, at first glance, as a clear-cut case of a cunning infiltrator wreaking havoc in an unsuspecting household. Yet the closer we observe, the more it reveals itself as a tale of wish fulfillment for everyone involved. No doubt comparisons to “Saltburn,” “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” or “The Talented Mr. Ripley” will abound, but what Lin conceived is far more subcutaneous, with a sobering tone and disinterested in building up to a grand plot twist — though the resolution is unexpected.
Hit with a basketball while doing pull-ups, 15-year-old Yan Shuo (Xilun Sun) injures his leg. As an apologetic gesture, the guilty culprit, Tu Wei, a fellow classmate from an affluent family, invites Shuo to play video games and to stay over for dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Tu react, impressed...

Actor Pratik Sehajpal has revealed insights about his character and the preparations to get into the character for ‘Jab Mila Tu’. The actor said: “I picked up a Punjabi accent by exaggerating the way people in Delhi talk, especially from West Delhi. It’s now a part of my everyday life — whether I’m getting up, sitting down, or just chatting. Sometimes serious talks sound like jokes because of the accent. It adds authenticity to my characters, influenced by observations in Delhi, even from simple moments like encounters in the metro.”
Talking about the reason for playing this unique and free-spirited character, Pratik said: “This role is a departure from my previous ones –unique, free-spirited, and incredibly fun. Reading the script, I found myself eagerly anticipating certain dialogues, creating that ‘When will this come?’ excitement. It’s the kind of role that captures attention and adds a fresh, enjoyable element.

The use of the handicapped and disabled in cinema is a tricky subject, not wanting to let the physical disability serve as a means of exploiting, demeaning, or lowering the person's on-screen attributes into being a lesser figure than the other participants who don't suffer from this condition. The horror genre has provided memorable characters in it's history that have a handicap to positive and uplifting effect, which is the route taken here with James Hung's newest creature feature “Detrimental.” This shows off the handicapped being instrumental to stopping the carnage around them in addition to being a fun monster movie in it's own right.

For the music of the films of 2014, the composers brought in classic voices, new vocal sounds and vibes and even an actress or two to bring their songs to life. One music director who has had a wonderful year is none other than the multi-talented Himesh Reshammiya.
Himesh began the year by singing the song ‘Photocopy’ for the film Jai Ho for music directors Sajid-Wajid. This was the first time that Himesh had sung a song outside of his own compositions, that too in Gujarati and not in Hindi. The song had singer Palak Muchhal accompany Himesh on the vocals and went on to become very popular from the album!
It was then the moment that all loyal fans had been waiting for, to welcome Himesh the actor once again! Himesh had prepared himself for the role of Ravi Kumar in the 1960’s style thriller, The Xpose. Himesh stunned everyone with his super sleek new look, as he shed a massive 20kgs for the role of a suspended cop turned superstar. The film garnered a super hit response at the...

The year in song in 2013 certainly was a treat for Hindi music fans. With songs ranging to straight-up classical influences, to songs with a Southern tinge plus the new grooves that hit high notes of hard rock, dub step, hip-hop, and punk-rock there was something for everyone. 2013 had some wonderful musical moments and they were not all on the big screen. This year we thought we would change it up a bit and not only highlight the best songs of the movies, we also wanted to shine the light on some of the brilliant performances that took place on MTV’s Coke Studio and MTV Unplugged. Sequel fever is still raging on, this time Akshay Kumar steps into Shoaib’s shoes for Once Upon Ay Time in Mumbai Dobara, with Imran Khan and Sonakshi Sinha joining Milan Thuria’s gangster drama. Pritam is back with this new album and he has already captured the airwaves with the melodious ‘Yeh Tune Kya Kiya’ and the remake of ‘Tayyab Ali’ from Amar Akbar Anthony which has not produced too much vitriol just yet. The album is quite good and sticks to the elements that made the previous album a raging success: kitsch and qawallis!
The standout of the album is Yeh Tune Kya Kiya , which would seem to conjure up more lamenting and accusatory lyrics, but this one is a dreamy qawalli that tweaks this expression around. Listeners may bristle at Javed Bashir blunt and raw vocals, but it’s that quality that makes Rajat Arora’s lyrics...
