We’re learning more about the upcoming sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale.
The final chapter of the Emmy-winning Hulu series originally was to begin production in 2023 for a fall 2024 premiere, but that schedule, of course, was delayed by the strikes. In an interview with Deadline, Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich, who oversees content for Hulu Originals, said the sixth season now is set to begin production this summer for premiere in 2025. The series was renewed for its sixth and final season in September 2022, just ahead of its Season 5 premiere.
Season 5 follows June (Elisabeth Moss) in the aftermath of Commander Waterford’s (Joseph Fiennes) murder and the consequences she must face for her role in the gruesome slaying. At a minimum, she will have to face off with his widow Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), and on some level Gilead. But mainly, she will be forced to redefine her identity and purpose,...

It started simply enough, with a discussion building on X (formerly Twitter) about why the Tina Fey-created “30 Rock” hasn’t seemed to generate the same warm nostalgia that “The Office” and, to a lesser extent, “Parks and Recreation” have in the decade since their 2000s into 2010s runs. That’s despite the show — which ran for seven seasons from 2006 to 2013 on NBC and won 16 Emmys including three Outstanding Comedy Series awards — being noted for the quality and density of its joke-writing
One take that caught on was Quinton Hoover noting that, while “30 Rock” is the funniest, its lead Liz Lemon (played by Tina Fey) “is much less inherently relatable than people working mundane and mostly pointless jobs out of necessity for a decade.” In the show, Lemon is the head writer for a sketch comedy series on NBC, inspired by Fey’s time as head writer for “Saturday Night Live.

Teen movies are one of the most beloved genres, from John Hughes' Molly Ringwald trilogy to the quest for virginity loss with the help of a warm, apple pie. But there's another part of adolescence that often gets lost on the big screen — especially for women. There are very few stories about the tween years: an uncomfortable and confusing time when you're unsure if you should still sleep with stuffed animals or start stuffing your bra. It involves the uncertainty of puberty, peer pressure, and oppressive school rules. I have so many memories from this formative time period burned into my brain; like the time a boy said I was gross or how desperately I wanted to look like the silky-haired popular girls.
Because of this gap in tween representation on screen, "girls are expected to go straight from 'Doc McStuffins' to 'Euphoria,'" Rachel Shukert shrewdly observed in Vulture.

Could “The Baby-Sitters Club” be making a comeback? The series was canceled by Netflix after two seasons earlier this year in March, and talk has swirled since about the series being shopped for a revival — or at least a TV movie — elsewhere.
But now there’s a bit more momentum for the show: “The Baby-Sitters Club” won two awards at the Children & Family Emmys this weekend, for both outstanding writing for a live action preschool or children’s program and outstanding children’s or family viewing series.
“We’re talking about it in a very preliminary way, talking about if we can bring it somewhere else. Or if we could do maybe like a movie, like kind of a wrap up special,” executive producer Rachel Shukert told Variety. “The girls obviously are older now than they were when we started and they’ve really grown up. For better or worse, “The Handmaid’s Tale” just dropped one of its most scream-worthy episodes ever.
Season 5’s “No Man’s Land,” written by Rachel Shukert and directed by Natalia Leite, focuses on one location and its characters: June (Elisabeth Moss) and Serena (Yvonna Strahovski), who just went into labor somewhere between Gilead and Canada. There’s a lot to scream about in this episode — especially if you’re Serena — from the tense birthing sequence to the shifting dynamics between these two women and what it all means. “The Handmaid’s Tale” is generally a show worth screaming over, where women have no rights and June’s self-righteous hero complex regularly hurts as many people as it helps.
Here are 22 times I screamed during “No Man’s Land,” in the order that they occurred.
1. Serena very clearly going into labor in the intro

Do I have to suspend disbelief a little more heartily than usual when, in this week’s The Handmaid’s Tale, June winds up in Serena’s immediate orbit at the exact moment Mrs. Waterford goes into labor? Sure. Do I mind? Not one bit.

Warning: contains spoilers for The Handmaid’s Tale Season 5 Episode 7 ‘No-Man’s Land’.
It’s pretty remarkable that an hour like this one – a mostly stationary, whispery two-hander hinging on emotional catharsis rather than action – is TV now. Time was, television shows had to be accessible to latecomers wandering the schedules. They had to wrap up plot points by the time the credits rolled. They had to be about crack commando units sent to prison for a crime they didn’t commit, or mighty princess forged in the heat of battle. Whatever TV was, it wasn’t this – an intimate exploration of vengeance vs mercy told through characters we’ve come to know better than we know ourselves.
The intensely internal focus of ‘No-Man’s Land’ probably won’t make it a crowd pleaser, and would definitely make it baffling to an outsider, but to viewers who’ve invested in June and Serena’s story,...

Amazon Prime Video will co-premiere season 5 of The Handmaid’s Tale to its members in the U.K. and Ireland later this year, sharing the latest season of the hit series starring Elisabeth Moss with British broadcaster Channel 4.
The news, unveiled Monday, comes after the e-commerce giant closed its acquisition of the studio, which is the international distributor of the dystopian hit drama, earlier this year.

Cinderella is coming back, and this time with a musical twist.
Jennifer Lopez's Nuyorican Productions, Skydance Television, and Concord Originals have joined forces to produce a limited series based on "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella," the musical version of the beloved fairy tale involving a magical fairy godmother and a lost slipper. Rachel Shukert, the creator of Netflix's "The Baby-Sitters Club," will serve as the showrunner and will also adapt the musical for the screen.
"Our partnership with Skydance and Nuyorican on this project is the first step of many towards our collective goal of championing timeless classics for a new generation and Rachel is the perfect voice to expand upon this story in a contemporary way," said Sophia Dilley, Senior Vice President of Development and Production at Concord Originals, per The Hollywood Reporter.
The original "Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella" starred Julie Andrews and aired in 1957 on CBS.

Rachel Shukert will write the adaptation in addition to serving as executive producer and showrunner. Lopez, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Benny Medina will executive produce for Nuyorican. David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Bill Bost will executive produce for Skydance, alongside Sophia Dilley, senior vice president of development and production at Concord Originals and Concord CEO Scott Pascucci. This is the first project under the previously announced deal between the companies to develop a slate of original projects based on Concord’s catalog of musicals.

Too-soon Netflix cancelations have hurt before, but few untimely demises have been handled with as much refreshing honesty as "The Baby-Sitters Club." It shouldn't come as a surprise that the creator of a show as empowering and thoughtful as this one has some ideas about the structural problems that led to its cancelation, and that seems to have been the case when Rachel Shukert spoke with Vulture.
"The Baby-Sitters Club" is based on the book series of the same name, by Ann M. Martin. The sweet series followed the misadventures of a group of teen girl babysitters -- and, in case you...

Netflix has canceled another series without a conclusive ending.
Deadline reports that the streaming service has canceled The Baby-Sitters Club after two seasons.
Rachel Shukert responded to the news with a statement.
"I have wanted to be a part of the world Ann M. Martin created since I was 7 years old, and for two amazing seasons I actually got to be," Shukert said, according to Deadline.
"It was a dream come true."
"Although I am heartbroken not to be returning to Stoneybrook for 20 more seasons, I am so proud of the incredible show our amazing cast and crew created and the way it brought joy and comfort to so many when they needed it most," the statement continues.

The Baby-Sitters Club is closing down. Netflix will not be ordering a third season of the family comedy-drama series based on the best-selling novels by Ann M. Martin.
The series, which follows the friendship and adventures of seven friends, Kristy, Claudia, Stacey, Mary Anne, Dawn, Jessi, and Mallory, as they start their own babysitting business in Stoneybrook, Connecticut, remains one of the best reviewed series on television, with both of its seasons scoring 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. While developing a fan following, the series have not been able to attract a wide audience; the eight-episode Season 2, released on October 11, failed to crack Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings and only appeared in the Netflix Top 10 for one week at #9.

The Baby-Sitters Club‘s stealth Mvp of Season 2 is Mary Anne Spier, and we will hear no further arguments.
“I mean, I don’t disagree with you,” series creator Rachel Shukert says when TVLine says as much. “Mary Anne is one of my favorite characters to write, honestly, because she’s so observant and so wise — and, in an interesting way, is very true to herself. Mary Anne is not projecting an identity that she’s not. She rarely acts with bravado or says things she doesn’t mean.”

One of the best shows of 2020 might not have made too many waves in the mainstream, but that didn’t stop it from garnering a tsunami of praise from both super-fans and TV critics alike. And now, the Netflix original has returned with a second season that might just be better than the first.
Rachel Shukert’s adaptation of “The Baby-Sitters Club” — the beloved youth book series by Ann M. Martin about, well, a club of babysitters — saw its second season drop on Monday, offering a welcome shelter from the storm for any viewers feeling overwhelmed and overworked by the never-ending slog that is 2021.
The series focuses on the titular club made up of seven adolescent girls who struggle with the typical trials of maintaining friends and family, in addition to facing more momentous challenges, including death, divorce, and, yes, even dating. Oh and, of course, doing all of the...

The Season 2 finale of The Baby-Sitters Club starts out as a sunny half hour about a revived Stoneybrook tradition — the baby parade! — and ends with a tearjerkingly tender decision for one of the girls and her family.
The success of that plot pivot is due to the series’ admirable blending of heart and humor. And most of the heavy lifting in Episode 8 is left to Mark Feuerstein, who, as Kristy’s well-off stepfather Watson, gives a touching speech about how much he’d like to adopt Kristy and her brothers officially after their biological dad lets them down yet again.

As a teenage athlete, Colin Kaepernick is challenged to “prove them wrong” — though he wonders why he always has to? — in the trailer for Netflix’s scripted drama series Colin in Black and White.
Premiering Friday, Oct. 29 with six 30-minute episodes, Colin in Black and White tells Kaepernick’s origin story through the lens of his formative years as a gifted football, baseball and basketball prospect (played by Jaden Michael), “before he reached the highest levels of American football as an NFL quarterback and became a cultural icon and activist.” Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds) and Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) also star.

Stoneybrook revives its long-dormant Baby Parade in The Baby-Sitters Club‘s Season 2 finale, giving the Bsc members a perfect opportunity to show off both their creative (looking at you, Claudia!) and kid-wrangling talents. Last year’s reboot of Ann M. Martin’s “The Baby-Sitters Club” was a TV highlight, not only for capturing and conveying pure delight but for giving audiences warmth and familiarity during a difficult time. It would have been easy for creator Rachel Shukert to rest on that goodwill. Instead, Season 2 of the Netflix original series is just as heartfelt, fun, and charming as Season 1 while simultaneously growing along with its characters.
In Season 1, the series already laid the foundation by creating the club itself and the central conflicts that would necessitate the club’s impact on its characters. With that being over and done with, Season 2 had two roads to take: Focus on what worked and keep the club in the forefront, or throw the club deep into the background to establish more individualized plots for the various characters. Well, surprise! Shukert and crew capably walk both roads, finding...

1. “Colin in Black and White” (available October 29)
Why Should I Watch? Wow, where to begin? I guess you have to start with the man himself, Colin Kaepernick. The former NFL quarterback who shined a spotlight on police brutality and systemic oppression through protest serves as co-creator and onscreen narrator in his six-part coming-of-age story. Then there’s Ava DuVernay — the Oscar-nominated filmmaker behind “Selma” and “When They See Us” handles co-creator, executive producer, and pilot director duties (and she also directs all of Kaepernick’s present-day scenes). Jaden Michael will play Young Colin, and really, that sums up all you need to know. Since his on-field protests, Kaepernick hasn’t been offered a position in the NFL, despite two appearances in the NFC Championship game, one Super Bowl, and the sixth-best touchdown-to-interception ratio in league history. That his first media project is framed around his youth, rather than a splashy tell-all about his professional career,...

Amid a time-bending stretch like the one we’re still living through, listing the best TV shows of 2020 feels counterproductive, if not downright preposterous. After all, who can definitively say what did or didn’t happen this year?
My calendar states the election was held just under a month ago, and yet certain manipulative powermongers insist it’s still playing out. I could also swear J. Lo ’s unjust renunciation by the Film Academy took place months before her dazzling Super Bowl Halftime show with Shakira, and yet the record books tell me her “Hustlers” snub in January and February’s concert were just 20 days apart. And despite what you may think, Quibi premiered and shuttered in 2020.
Still, TV did play a more substantial role this year than many others. In an age of isolation and social distancing, television was a lifeboat. The family room’s big screen functioned as...

The rising tide of programming for the small screen, along with a greater push for diversity in Hollywood, has increased the number of roles for actors of color overall in recent years. And while it’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many of those gains have been made by younger performers — organizations such as SAG-AFTRA don’t tabulate that info — there are plenty of positive signs on the big and small screen.
Among them: Latinx characters on streamers; Kenya Barris series with a plethora of young Black talent; and roles for Asian-American kids on a number of platforms. Family-friendly shows such as “One Day at a Time” and “Party of Five” have been rebooted with Latinx families at their core, while Hulu’s “Love, Victor,” a small-screen spinoff of “Love, Simon,” centers on a Latinx teen’s struggles to fit into a new school. But it had been years since she revisited the iconic '80s and '90s book series about a group of suburban Connecticut pre-teens who start a hotline for local parents to call and book them as babysitters.
Once she began discussing the idea of rebooting Ann M. Martin's series for Gen Z, however,...
