“I think Celine Dion is the reason I’m still here.”
That’s what Alexander Joe (aka @alexbegs on TikTok) tells us when we ask him how content creation ended up becoming his career.
But let’s back up a sec. Alex–for those not familiar–is a self-described “little Midwest girly-boy” from Missouri who grew up in the ’90s and got his first taste of Being Online with Og YouTubers like Jenna Marbles. As a kid he’d film joke videos with his cousins and friends, and was thrilled if they hit a few hundred views. He always wanted a platform, he says, and he always liked entertaining, but he never thought he’d be able to grow a real following online.

In the summer between Paige Wassel‘s sophomore and junior years of college, she emailed Vogue cold and asked for an internship.
“I was studying PR at the time, and Vogue got back to me and they were like, ‘We’ve never had someone just email us for an internship,'” she says. “They brought me in for an interview, and I ended up landing it.”
She worked PR for Vogue, and then got a full-time job at a PR firm in Los Angeles after graduating. But it wasn’t too long before she realized “I just don’t want to do this anymore.” And she got lucky/unlucky: “I actually got laid off around that time where I was looking for new jobs.

Cassidy Montalvo grew up watching Jenna Marbles and wanting to go to cosmetology school or get into fashion–maybe with a bit of YouTube on the side.
Instead, with her parents in her ear, she went to college to become a paralegal, and then fell into a grueling (but beloved) job managing the front desk of a hotel. Her job played into her “workaholic tendencies,” she says, and kept her on the clock sometimes 12 or 15 hours at a time. She’d also gotten married and had a young daughter, so she was plenty busy outside of work too. Her early dreams of making content grew distant.
Then the pandemic hit.

VidCon, the marquee gathering for creators and influencers, was poised for a triumphant return to Anaheim after its two-year Covid-19 hiatus. And this year, TikTok — the once upstart platform that skyrocketed during the pandemic to more than 1-billion plus active users — was taking over YouTube’s spot as the conference’s title sponsor, promising the presence of top TikTok creators and an injection of new energy into the 12-year-old conference.
The creator economy has skyrocketed in the past few years, with the market size for consumers spending money on creators projected to grow from 9.8 billion to more than 18 billion, according to an October 2021 report from UTA. And with that growth has come sizable budgets from brands inking lucrative deals with talent and sustained interest from burgeoning creators seeking to monetize their followings and turn their content into a business. In the latest episode of his Views podcast, which he co-hosts with fellow Vlod Squad star Jason Nash, David Dobrik offered a blanket apology for any past works that have made viewers feel uncomfortable or unwelcome.
The statement arrives as many creators -- including Jenna Marbles, Shane Dawson, and even Dobrik’s ex-girlfriend, Liza Koshy -- are looking back on their past work with fresh eyes amid a racial reckoning about systemic inequality and police brutality precipitated by the killing of George Floyd at the end of May.
“Every video I make, every Instagram I post, everything I do -- I just want to cheer somebody up,” Dobrik said at the top of Views in a statement of sorts. “I want to make ‘em laugh, I want to make ‘em smile. The Office creator Greg Daniels has cut a blackface scene from a 2012 episode, calling the racist trope “unacceptable” even when used as satire.
In a statement today, Daniels said, “The Office is about a group of people trying to work together with mutual respect despite the inappropriate actions of their boss and assistant manager. The show employed satire to expose unacceptable behavior and deliver a message of inclusion. Today we cut a shot of an actor wearing blackface that was used to criticize a specific racist European practice. Blackface is unacceptable and making the point so graphically is hurtful and wrong. I am sorry for the pain that caused.”
The deleted 2012 Christmas episode scene involves Rainn Wilson’s Dwight dressing up for a holiday party as Belsnickel, a Pennsylvania Dutch folkloric St. Nicolas-like character. The office mates protest when they learn that Belsnickel is typically accompanied by a blackface sidekick named Zwarte Piet,...

Jenna Marbles, a comedic vlogger who has been on YouTube for over a decade -- racking up 20 million subscribers and roughly 30 million monthly views -- is taking an indefinite hiatus from her channel. Marbles also discussed the possibility of giving up YouTube entirely after several old videos resurfaced in recent weeks -- one in which she can be seen donning blackface, and another containing song lyrics making fun of Asian people. “Right now,” she said tearfully, “I just can't exist on this channel.”
Marbles’ apology and departure from YouTube arrives amid global protests against police brutality and systemic racism sparked by the alleged murder of George Floyd, that have also precipitated a reckoning about racism across myriad cultural sectors and industries, including digital media. In addition to announcing her departure from YouTube, Marbles confirmed that, over the past few days, she had privated almost all of her old content. All told,...

Jenna Marbles, who became one of the most popular YouTube vloggers and claimed more than 3 billion views and 20 million subscribers in her decade-long career, is quitting her channel. In an 11-minute video posted to her channel, Marbles apologized for past instances of slut-shaming and for doing a blackface video impersonating rapper Nicki Minaj.
“I get it. We’re at a time where we are purging ourselves of anything and everything toxic … I’ve definitely done things in the past that weren’t great. I’m not completely unproblematic. I’ve tried my best to grow up.”
Her apology largely focused on the 2011 blackface video. Marbles was blasted after it posted, and she never repeated it, claiming to have learned from the experience.
“I’m unbelievably sorry … I wish it wasn’t part of my past,” she said. As for slut-shaming, “It doesn’t need to exist. I shouldn’t have ever said that.

“I think I’m just going to move on from this channel, for now,” she said. “I don’t know if that’s forever. I don’t know how long that’s going to be…. I want to make sure that the things that I’ve put into the world aren’t hurting anyone.”

James Charles fans likely know that the YouTube beauty phenom recently purchased a new house -- though unfortunately, it turns out, some followers appear to have tracked down the 19-year-old’s address and are showing up at his front door unannounced.
Like many YouTubers before him, Charles sternly asked his followers yesterday -- which totals 11.4 million YouTube subscribers and 11.5 million Instagram followers -- to stop coming to his home. “I will not hug you, I will not take a photo with you, and I absolutely will not sign your [eyeshadow] palette,” he tweeted. “It is extremely disrespectful and makes me feel very unsafe in my own home. Respect people’s privacy, it’s really not that hard.”
Apparently, though, it's a violation that has become a common occurrence for digital celebrities, whose fame is predicated on fostering a sense of familiarity. In the past, YouTube couples like Zoe Sugg and Alfie Deyes...

A chance encounter at the mall has vaulted a precocious boy's YouTube channel into the spotlight. The channel in question is titled Joey Vlogz, and it reeled in 90,000 new subscribers in the days after its titular host showed up in a video posted by YouTube star Jenna Mourey, known online as Jenna Marbles.
Last month, Mourey and her boyfriend Julien Solomita went to a Los Angeles mall to do some holiday shopping. There, young Joey approached them after noticing a video camera in Solomita's hand. Mourey, who has more than 17 million subscribers, is one of YouTube's biggest stars, but Joey didn't recognize her at first. It was only during his second encounter with the couple, when he ran up to them breathlessly, that he expressed awe over his encounter with two "professional YouTubers."
Inspired by Joey's earnestness and his bright-eyed exuberance, Mourey linked to the Joey Vlogz channel in her video's description.

On August 31st, a group of creators led by Philip DeFranco sparked an Internet firestorm when they shared that several of their videos were deemed “not ad-friendly” by YouTube and had been “demonetized” as a result. In truth, those videos were not newly demonetized, and the only reason creators noticed the change now was due to a policy change made by YouTube in an effort to be more transparent.
Even though the demonetization controversy didn’t end up in exactly the same place it started, it has drawn a flurry of responses from the YouTube community. Everyone seems to have an opinion, from the people who are crying censorship to those who don’t think an “ad-friendly” policy is such a bad idea. While we have already written a basic overview of the recent events, there is plenty more than can be learned from the collected reactions to the controversy.

On August 31st, creators across YouTube received notifications from the video site. Some of your videos have been deemed unfriendly for advertisers, the notifications read, and monetization has therefore been disabled on those videos. If you believe these claims to be unfair, the message continued, you are able to appeal them.
Within the YouTube community, the reaction to this news has been swift and overwhelmingly negative. Leading the charge has been Philip DeFranco, who learned that more than 40 of his videos had been demonetized. In a tweet, he said that the new development “feels a little bit like getting stabbed in the back after 10 years.” Other YouTubers have piggybacked off DeFranco’s tweet to offer their own input. Nadeshot, a popular gamer, called YouTube’s policy “low key terrifying,” while Jenna Marbles went as far as to cry conspiracy. DeFranco later voiced additional concerns in a video he released on his channel.

If any of you knew that there was a Maximum Ride movie floating around out there and didn’t tell me, I’ll have you know I’m mad about it. Not like I’ve been following this series for years. And I’m especially mad, given how hilariously awful the first trailer for said movie looks.
I’m still having a hard time believing a Maximum Ride film, directed by someone named Jay Martin, actually exists, given that this property has been in development hell for over a decade, with people like Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke trying to make it happen along the way. There were once plans to do it as a web series, but that idea obviously changed course somewhere in the midst of development (perhaps as Paramount watched shows like Community and Sin City Saints send Yahoo Screen down the tubes).

Screaming tweens. Boy bands singing Drake. People talking to video cameras. VidCon, the annual convention for all things YouTube, vlogging, and digital media, is certainly a sight to behold. The term “content creator” is rarely thrown around quite so often as it was in the hallways of the Anaheim Convention Center last weekend. If one thing is certain, digital culture is a lot more advanced than it was a few years ago. What can we surmise from VidCon about the future of the industry that has better numbers than the views on “David After Dentist?” This is real life for the digital age.
The Freshmen Online Stars Are All Grown Up
Grace Helbig, Jenna Marbles, and Hannah Hart each began vlogging in 2008, 2010, and 2011, respectively. In Internet years, they’re ancient. Now, they’re credited with shaping the style and creating a language for a form of digital media that is now over ten years old.

First comes summer then comes VidCon. And among the YouTube royalty descending upon the Anaheim Convention Center in California this week will be last year's King of VidCon, Tyler Oakley. But, if you're still confused as we head into VidCon, here are five things you need to know about the uber upbeat YouTube star who redefined the word Bff. 1. He gets SnervousOakley,...

Across 14 seasons and 266 episodes, Family Guy has cracked jokes about everything from Star Wars to the Detroit Lions to cool hwip. So what’s the Fox animated comedy’s latest target? YouTube. In the show’s April 17th episode, Stewie cracked jokes about YouTube stars Jenna Marbles, Ray William Johnson, Bethany Mota, Marcus Butler, and Ingrid Nilsen, defining them as both rich and anonymous.
In turn, Stewie mentions the above content creators, and each time, Brian echoes the sentiments of Americans of a certain age by not recognizing any of the names. As Stewie notes, Brian’s ignorance doesn’t matter, because those YouTubers are rich. “This,” he concludes, pointing to the Fox logo in the corner of the screen, “this is over.”
It’s fun to see a major network show riffing on the online video community, even if Family Guy is overstating the amount money that can be made on the Internet.

Thousands of digital creators, industry professionals, brands, and fans will pack their bags for sunny Florida next week in anticipation of Playlist Live Orlando -- a six-year-old convention that has evolved into an annual industry staple.
This year’s three-day event, of course, purports to be its biggest yet with roughly 12,000 fans, 450 influencers and 75 brands in attendance -- representing a 2,000% increase in attendance since the event’s inception in 2011, says founder Alex Tchekmeian. And for the first time, the event will culminate with a two-hour firework, laser light, and DJ show for attendees and influencers alike on Saturday evening.
“This year we’ve really activated the whole entire outdoor space of the venue -- so that’s going to be one of the bigger features this year,” Tchekmeian tells Tubefilter.
With 600 fans in attendance at the very first Playlist Live, this figure has doubled every year between 2011 and 2015. This year,...

A feature film starring three of YouTube’s most popular practical jokes has arrived, fittingly, on April Fools’ Day. Natural Born Pranksters, which is led by Roman Atwood, Vitaly Zdorovetskiy, and Dennis Roady, is now available in theaters, on video on-demand platforms like iTunes, and on home video.
In their film, Atwood, Zdorovetskiy, and Roady pull off some of their most extravagant stunts yet, with unsuspecting targets falling victim. A few other YouTube stars, including Tom Mabe, Jenna Marbles, and Furious Pete, show up to lend some helping hands. I’ve previously described Natural Born Pranksters as “Jackass re-spun for the YouTube crowd,” and the film’s trailer backs up that characterization.
Natural Born Pranksters has been in the works since 2014, when Collective Digital Studio -- which has since merged with Studio 71 and adopted the German network’s name -- announced its plan to harness the star power of the titular pranksters.

Earlier this year, YouTube celebrated its 10th birthday. Now, a few months later, one of the video site’s most resilient channels has reached that milestone as well. Smosh, the digital home of Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla, just turned ten--and its stars celebrated by remaking one of their first videos.
Ten years ago, Hecox and Padilla made their YouTube debut with a lip sync video set to the Power Rangers theme song. Five months after that, they released the first of their “Smosh shorts.” It was a brief sketch called “Dolls,” and to commemorate a decade of silliness, Hecox and Padilla remade it. The new version is just like the old one, except the Smosh guys have much better haircuts now.

Three of YouTube’s most successful practical jokers are officially coming to movie theaters. Lionsgate has picked up the distribution rights for Natural Born Pranksters, a film produced by Collective Digital Studio and starring Roman Atwood, Vitaly Zdorovetskiy, and Dennis Roady.
Atwood, Zdorovetskiy (aka VitalyzdTV), and Roady are all known for the prank videos they create on YouTube, where they have more than 17 million subscribers among their respective channels. In Natural Born Pranksters, they will take their antics to the big screen by “turning Hollywood into Prankwood,” according to a press release. Guests who will appear in the film will include Jenna Marbles, Furious Pete, and fellow prankster Tom Mabe. It kind of sounds like Jackass, re-spun for the YouTube crowd.
Natural Born Pranksters has been in the works for more than a year and a half. It was first announced in April 2014, shortly after Atwood and Zdorovetskiy joined the Collective Digital Studio.

Marbles originally announced her impending wax likeness back in July 2015 through an Instagram video of her behind-the-scenes model creation process with Madame Tussauds. At the time, the 29-year-old YouTube celebrity, who boasts over 15 million subscribers on YouTube, told her fans they’d soon be able to take selfies with her wax figure and “grope da butt” all they wanted. Now, they can actually do that with Marbles’ likeness, which is the first selfie-taking wax figure at Madame Tussauds New York. The YouTuber’s wax model is also the first-ever Madame Tussauds figure to boast its own social media presence where selfies with fans and visitors are posted.

Let’s face it, though: This is a show about the Internet. And as a result, many of its viewers will be cord-cutters who lack cable subscriptions. If you fall into that category, not to worry; the Streamys will also be available online. Specifically, a live stream of the event will be available on the VH1 YouTube channel. Read More: Here's How AwesomenessTV is Tapping Into Social Media Stardom Netflix has picked up exclusive streaming rights for Anthony Hecox and Ian Padilla's "Smosh: The Movie," which was released on iTunes and Vimeo earlier this summer. The teen comedy is a modern day update of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and is the first feature from Hecox and Padilla, who are some of YouTube's biggest stars with over 30 million followers. Directed by Alex Winter, the movie finds the duo teleporting into some of YouTube's biggest pages (including Jenna Marbles and Grace Helbig) in order to take down an embarrassing clip of Hecox that could potentially go viral and ruin his chances of getting with his teen crush. The acquisition represents yet another deal that finds Netflix gathering content focused on the young teenage demographic. In addition to "Smosh: The Movie," Netflix has new seasons of "Degrassi" and other YouTube-orientated movies.
