There’s a lyric in “The Overthrow” on Will Hoge’s new album Tiny Little Movies in which the unwavering singer-songwriter spits out a perfect pop-culture description of our clown-painted, misogynistic Dear Leader: he’s “Darth Vader with a spray tan/and a girly magazine.”
“That one’s not getting played on country radio,” Hoge deadpans.
But the truth is the Nashville native has never been a part of that system. While he scored a Grammy nomination and earned some mailbox money when Eli Young Band turned his song “Even...

“You can do this, Jaren! I believe in you.”
The Cadillac Three’s Jaren Johnston has his arms above his head like he’s in the middle of a tricep extension at the gym, except he’s gripping a small axe instead of a dumbbell, staring down a target with laser focus. Johnston, alongside his bandmates Neil Mason and Kelby Ray, are gathered this Tuesday morning at an East Nashville axe-throwing establishment (yes, that’s a thing), and Chelsea, the resident hurling-sharp-things-against-the-wall expert, is coaching Johnston through his first official chuck.

Sure, Frankie Ballard can sing and play the guitar, but he's also revealed a hidden talent: doing doughnuts that match the best of any stunt-car driver's. Yes, that really is Ballard behind the wheel, ripping into the turf and kicking up the dust in his "El Camino" video. The rocking heartbreak song is featured on his new album, El Rio, due out Friday. His driving skill was developed in his teens, Ballard explained during an interview at Warner Music in Nashville. A standout right-fielder for his Battle Creek, Michigan, high school baseball team, Ballard would arrive at the school parking...

After his breakthrough Sunshine & Whiskey, Frankie Ballard has gone and done something crazy for a country artist. He's recorded his next album in the actual country. As in nowhere-near-Nashville, cruddy-cell-service, see-the-stars-at-night country. "I knew being in a place where there really wasn't anything else to do but make music would help us to focus ourselves and make the music better," said Ballard, 33. "It's that retreat mentality. You're at summer camp with your buddies. All you can do is make the music." The site was Sonic Ranch, a remote studio located in a pecan grove on the Rio Grande just south of El Paso,...

Andy Grammer's hit single, "Honey, I'm Good," may be about staying faithful to his wife while he's on tour, but the pop songwriter is more than willing to play the field when it comes to experimenting with genres. Which is why he recruited Eli Young Band to add some quick-step twang and Texas-tinged vocals to a country version of the song from his sophomore release, Magazines or Novels.
Swapping keys for guitar and boosting the harmonies up a notch, the song works surprisingly well as a modern country tune...

Sam Hunt has arrived.
After penning hits for Keith Urban, Kenny Chesney and Billy Currington, the 30-year-old Georgia native broke out on his own last year with his platinum-certified single, "Leave the Night On."
"It was one of those titles that's obviously a play on words and those historically have been a big part of country music," Hunt tells ETonline in this week's installment of Behind the Hit. "The bad thing about those titles is that most of them have been written."

"It's so exciting to have your first No. 1 song and you're like, 'Wow,' I just can't believe this is actually happening,' [but] there's a little voice in the back of your head that's like, 'What if this is the only time I'm ever going to get to experience this?'"
