The following contains spoilers from The Last Ship‘s series finale.
As initially envisioned for a hot second, TNT’s The Last Ship would have ended its five-season run by not only revealing that Tom Chandler came out of the war with Colombia alive, but by then showing how he went on to live.
As the action-thriller neared its very end on Nov. 11, “the man who saved the world” — teetering underwater between life and death after steering the Nathan James into the enemy’s battleship — embarked on a surreal stroll through his ship’s decks, where he was visited by colleagues lost and loved.

That was certainly an appropriate series finale, especially as it was shown on Veterans' Day.
Tom Chandler cheated death one more time, although his ship didn't, on The Last Ship Season 5 Episode 10.
I guess I missed a lot by not having been forced to read "Moby Dick" while in school.
Then I would have figured out sooner why Tom kept spacing out throughout the season.
Here goes: The battleship was Tom's white whale. He was hunting it; it was hunting him.
Obsession is a much more preferable explanation than having a medical condition such as Ptsd or traumatic brain injury or a brain tumor.
Related: The Last Ship's Adam Baldwin Q & A
Using the sinking Nathan James as a harpoon to sink the battleship should have taken care of that obsession.
But that wasn't Tom's only, shall we say, mental condition.
As Sasha pointed out, Tom had a significant case of survivor's guilt.

The Nathan James will soon complete its final mission.
The Last Ship, which features the destroyer Nathan James and its crew, concludes its five-season run Sunday night.
It's safe to assume the TNT war drama won't go quietly into that good night.
To get an updated briefing on the war against Tavo's Gran Colombian forces, TV Fanatic talked with Adam Baldwin, who plays steadfast Navy officer Mike Slattery.
Slattery has played several roles during the run of The Last Ship. He started as Tom Chandler's executive officer, then became commanding officer of the Nathan James and has since been promoted to admiral. Whatever needs to be done, Slattery is there to pitch in.
Among Baldwin's memorable roles before Slattery were Casey on Chuck and Jayne on the criminally short-lived Firefly.
Baldwin spoke not only about the season finale but also about his dedicated character and the impact of The Last Ship.

It sure didn't take Tom Chandler long to get right back in the center of the action.
A new Tom Chandler was on display on The Last Ship Season 5 Episode 3.
We'd already gotten to see Tom the professor on The Last Ship Season 5 Episode 1. But no one was tuning in to watch him teach military history.
This time out, we briefly got to see Tom the diplomat as he uses his stature as world hero to get representatives of two warring nations, Mexico and Cuba, to come to the table to discuss a temporary alliance with the U.S.
Tom definitely pushed the right buttons, appealing to their self-interests. Costa Rica falling to Tavo's forces reinforced his point nicely.
What do the two nations bring to the table? First off, their troops don't get added to Tavo's forces. Also, they can fill in some gaps in soldiers and weaponry while...

The Last Ship‘s Tom Chandler is in the midst of brokering an extremely uneasy alliance when some very bad news hits, in this sneak peek from Episode 3 of the TNT drama’s fifth and final season.
In the episode “El Puente” (The Bridge), airing Sunday at 9/8c, Chandler (played by Eric Dane) tries his hand at diplomacy to unite two hostile countries so they can fight a common enemy in “revolutionary” Gustavo Barros. As seen in the exclusive preview above, it is Mexico and Cuba with whom he is trying to ally the United States, though at least one...

There's no reason to wonder whether The Last Ship TV show will be cancelled or renewed for six on TNT. Back in May of 2018, the cable network announced this would be the fifth and final season. We're still tracking the ratings to give us a baseline for other shows, and because it's fun, so stay tuned.

Well, that certainly started off with a bang.
It was a new twist on an old concept on The Last Ship Season 5 Episode 1.
An actual virus, the Red Flu, plagued mankind back on The Last Ship Season 1.
Now a computer virus hindered the U.S. military on the first episode of the series' final season.
This certainly resonates in a country still reeling from the effects of Russian hacking that influenced our electoral system.
We're all far too dependent on technology in our daily lives. A cyber-attack set off in Panama brought that message home to the U.S. military, sowing chaos in the midst of a celebration of the Navy's renaissance.

The Nathan James is heading into port.
The fifth and final season of The Last Ship premieres Sunday night.
And it's a safe bet the action-packed TNT war drama will go out with a bang.
To get a top-secret briefing on the Nathan James' final mission, TV Fanatic talked with Bridget Regan, who plays kick-ass female lead Sasha Cooper, a former Naval Intelligence officer.
Before playing the heroic Sasha, Regan first made her mark by playing a pair of TV villains: Rose/Sin Rostro on Jane the Virgin and Dottie Underwood on Agent Carter.
Regan spoke not only about the upcoming season but also about her complicated character and what has kept The Last Ship popular through its run.
Sasha became the new female lead on The Last Ship Season 3 after Dr. Scott was killed off at the end of The Last Ship Season 2. How was that transition for you?...

“The Last Ship” is officially ending with its upcoming fifth season, Variety has learned.
The Turner network renewed the drama, starring Eric Dane, for a fourth season in July 2016, with the Season 5 renewal coming that September. Seasons 4 and 5 were shot back-to-back, with each consisting of 10 episodes. Season 5 will launch this summer.
It had long been suspected that the show’s fifth season would be its last. The news was made all but official when “The Last Ship” star Jocko Sims, who plays Lt. Carlton Burk on the series, booked a series regular role on the recently-ordered NBC medical drama “New Amsterdam.”
Season 5 of “The Last Ship” does not currently have a premiere date.
“The Last Ship” also stars Adam Baldwin, Bridget Regan, Charles Parnell, Travis Van Winkle, Marissa Neitling, Christina Elmore, Jocko Sims, Bren Foster, and Kevin Michael Martin. Based on William Brinkley’s novel, the series follows the Navy destroyer U.

Peter has a long history of stupidity and on Family Guy Season 16 Episode 14 he continues that history when he picks up a cap at the thrift store that causes people to think he's a veteran.
He tried to tell people the truth but they just wouldn't listen. Because the cap was so cool and after realizing there were perks being a veteran, he decided to keep pretending -- even convincing the guys to pretend along with him.
It was a stupid idea and that's pretty much Peter's trademark.
The funniest thing about the whole situation was that he wasn't even wearing a legitimate veteran's cap anyway.
He was wearing a hat from the fictional Nathan James, and the person who called him out on it was none other than Eric Dane (guest voice as himself) aka Captain Tom Chandler from the hit TNT series The Last Ship.

Hey DEADheads, I’m Ryne from The Moon is a Dead World with another week of horror television. It’s late this week (again) because I got married the past weekend, so I’ve been pretty busy getting things ready and going on a mini-honeymoon. We’ll try to catch up soon, but here’s all of your favorite stuff. Shawn’s got True Blood and Falling Skies, Kevin‘s got Under the Dome, Teen Wolf, and The Strain, and I’ve got the rest.
The Last Ship: “Trials” - Sunday, August 17 at 9 Pm
Maybe it was the wine I was drinking last night, but The Last Ship seemed to work very well in this episode of “Trials.” There’s no crazy political stance that the show takes; there’s no over-the-top villain to rely on. The episode is simply about six members of the crew opting to test Dr.

The Last Ship: “Sos” - Sunday, August 3 at 9 Pm
Those pesky ruskies are back, and this time, they’re not messing around. It all begins because the Nathan James decides to break radio silence to respond to an Sos call from a woman who has been trying to get help for weeks. Her name is Bertrise, and she’s been on a boat filled with people who have succumbed to the virus. Dr. Scott thinks she may be immune, which would be a big help for the vaccine, so Tom Chandler calls out to her and takes a team on a rescue mission.

Hey Liberal Dead fans, it’s Ryne from The Moon is a Dead World. This week we’re adding The Lottery to our continual rotation of Sunday night horror shows. Extant and True Blood are being covered by Shawn, and Kevin Lovell is picking up The Strain, Teen Wolf, and Under the Dome. I’ve got the rest!
The Last Ship: “El Toro” - Sunday, July 20 at 9 Pm
Well, I thought The Last Ship had lost its extreme right-wing stance after last week’s episode, but thankfully “El Toro” gets things rolling with a storyline about a stereotypical Hispanic tyrant who takes over an island with his goons and then forces the people living there into slavery in exchange for protection.
You might ask why the crew of this last ship are in the jungles of Nicaragua; I’d remind you that this is The Last Ship, and anything is possible.

The Last Ship: “We’ll Get There” - Sunday, July 13 at 9 Pm
I’m a little disappointed in the lack of offensive right-wing material in “We’ll Get There.” After last week’s awful Russian dictator, I thought we might branch out to some sort of Chinese communist attack. Alas, we get feelings about sons and daughters, about family left behind; there’s a water shortage after the ship’s engine fails. In general, it’s a pretty serious episode without much to laugh about.
