The writer of the scores for Quantum of Solace, Hot Fuzz and more how he tackles his work – and what John Barry told him
David Arnold, the James Bond composer and musical director of the London Olympics closing ceremony, is talking ghosts. The north London studios where we meet, he tells me, are haunted. Doors slam shut and footsteps are heard in studios that he knows to be empty.
In one part of the building – a former school and church – electrical equipment never works and people report sightings of two spectral schoolchildren dressed in Victorian clothing. "I'm halfway between being a real cynic and totally convinced by it," says Arnold. Our conversation is made more disconcerting by the lights switching off every 15 minutes (an eco-friendly device, not an otherwordly one).
If it sounds like a case for BBC1's Sherlock then that would be entirely appropriate – Arnold is currently working,...

James Corden continues his campaign to find decent film roles, after working with Once director John Carney on Can A Song Save Your Life and playing talent show sensation Paul Potts in One Chance. For his next trick, he’s teaming up with someone who has helped him to success on the stage – writer Richard Bean – for family comedy School For Santas.Working Title films is developing the project around Corden, fashioning a leading role as a down-on-his-luck dad who has to find some Christmas spirit and embrace his inner Santa in order to win back his kids.We worry that with the wrong handling, it could become a schmaltzy festive fizzle along the lines of Jingle All The Way, but with a script from One Man, Two Guvnors writer Bean (the stage show that catapulted Corden to his recent successes), we’re more hopeful. Tiger Airways has been found guilty of spamming its customers by Australia’s communications watchdog.
The Singapore Airlines-backed carrier has been fined $110,000 by the Australian Communications and Media Authority for failing to unsubscribe customers from marketing emails.
The news comes in the same month that restrictions imposed on the airline were lifted more than a year after its entire fleet was grounded over safety concerns.
The Acma ruling came after it found that, despite repeated requests from Tiger Airlines’ customers to be removed from its mailing list, and a number of warnings from Acma, the airline continued to breach its rules on spamming.
Acma deputy chair Richard Bean said in a statement: “This is one of a number of investigations in which the Acma has found businesses have allowed faulty unsubscribe facilities to continue, in spite of repeated customer complaints.”

The hit National Theatre production is to visit major festivals in Asia and New Zealand, before taking up residency as part of Cate Blanchett's final season as co-artistic director of Sydney Theatre Company
The National Theatre's smash hit One Man, Two Guvnors will swap Brighton pier for Bondi beach when it embarks on a tour of Australia and east Asia next year.
Having just finished a successful five months on Broadway, Nicholas Hytner's production will visit major festivals in Hong Kong, Adelaide and Auckland from February, before playing six-week runs in each of Australia's two cultural capitals, Sydney and Melbourne. The transfer might require playwright Richard Bean to tinker with the script a second time, to smooth some of the particularly British terminology for a new audience.
With James Corden due to film his latest self-penned BBC sitcom, The Wrong Man, in early 2013, the cast will be led by Owain Arthur.
