“Diversity” is undoubtedly a buzzword in Hollywood, but the inclusion of people with disabilities behind and in front of the camera remains an overlooked topic in the industry.
At Variety‘s inaugural Inclusion Gathering, presented by the Ruderman Family Foundation at West Hollywood’s London Hotel on Nov. 2, industry creatives and executives gathered for breakfast and a series of conversations centered around the topic of disabilities and inclusion in Hollywood.
The first conversation, “Disabilities in Storytelling,” was moderated by Tim Gray, executive vice president, Golden Globes, and featured Ashley Eakin, director of Disney’s “Growing Up” and Apple TV+’s “Best Foot Forward”; Angela Kang, showrunner and executive producer of “The Walking Dead”; David Renaud, co-executive producer of “The Good Doctor”; Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, executive producer, creator and showrunner of “The Witcher”; and Kaitlynn Yang, CEO, visual effects supervisor on “American Born Chinese.”

There is so much secrecy surrounding this one, it’s scary! Spun off from FX’s award-winning American Horror Story, Season 2 of the FX on Hulu anthology American Horror Stories unveils eight creepy, stand-alone episodes in series cocreator Ryan Murphy’s macabre franchise where you go in blind — and then get blindsided! (Credit: FX) Expect several O.G. AHS alums to appear. Denis O’Hare (“Murder House” and “Roanoke”) is slated for the opening hour, “Dollhouse,” while Episode 3’s “Aura” is alleged to feature “Coven” standout Gabourey Sidibe. But it’s Episode 5’s “Bloody Mary” that we’re most psyched for. Talk about one horror story we’ve been dying for AHS to take a whack at. At the Media Access Awards on Wednesday, honoree Marlee Matlin summed up the mood by saying that when she came to Los Angeles in 1985, “words like equality and access were so far outside the mainstream of Hollywood, I had to make noise.” Receiving the Maa’s lifetime achievement award “pushes me to be even louder.”
The annual awards have long honored film and TV shows that offer positive portrayals of disabled people. Other honorees, which were announced in advance, included Selma Blair, Troy Kotsur, John Krasinski, Jamie Nieto, Ryan O’Connell, “Luca” producer Andrea Warren and Zeno Mountain Farm.
The Apple film “Coda” was the only winner of multiple awards, with Matlin, her co-star Troy Kotsur and the film’s casting directors Deborah Aquila, Tricia Wood and Lisa Zagoria honored. The trio received the casting society of America award, with the film’s writer-director Sian Heder praising them as partners.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched the Season 1 finale of “American Horror Stories,” “Game Over,” streaming now on FX on Hulu.
The final episode of “American Horror Stories” Season 1 took viewers back to where the season (and the franchise) started — the Murder House — but in a very tongue-in-cheek way.
The episode started off focusing on two murder buffs who were self-proclaimed “huge ‘American Horror Story’ fans” — so, in the world of “American Horror Stories,” “American Horror Story” exists as a TV show. The couple met at Comic-Con where Dylan (Adam Hagenbuch) was dressed as Son of Bloody Face and Connie (Noah Cyrus) was dressed as Sister Jude, both from “Asylum.” Also, did you notice their names are Dylan and Connie, a la the first names of the actors who played Ben and Vivien Harmon, Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton, in Season 1 of “Horror Story”?

American Horror Stories kicked off at the Murder House...
And it will also end there.
Ryan Murphy confirmed the cast for American Horror Stories Season 1 Episode 7 -- the season finale -- on Tuesday, and this trip to the Murder House will include some familiar faces.
Dylan McDermott and Jamie Brewer are reprising their roles as Dr. Ben Harmon and Adelaide “Addie” Langdon, respectively.
This marks the first time Brewer has played the character since the freshman season.
McDermott played Ben back in an episode of AHS: Apocalypse in 2018, but still, it's nice to know some of these characters are coming back.
Part of the issue with the first two episodes of the series was that none of the Murder House ghosts made an appearance, rendering the episodes to be a bit too farfetched.

Playwright Lindsey Ferrentino is adapting her stage show “Amy and the Orphans” into a feature film at Netflix.
Ferrentino will write and direct the movie, marking her feature directorial debut. Aggregate Films is producing “Amy and the Orphans.”

Their biggest worry is determining how to break the bad news to their sister Amy, a person with Down syndrome who has lived in a state home for years. Yes, even as the world begins to open up (baby steps), we still need feel-good entertainment now more than ever.
Filmmaker Linda Palmer wrote, directed, and produced a movie that hits just the right note for 2020 with her inspirational film Turnover.
Turnover is a double entendre speaking to both the flakey, fruit-filled pastry as well as the management term most want to steer clear of in their business.
Paul Guilfoyle Plays Peter, a recently divorced cafe owner who works too much, holds his cards too close to the vest and is just running out of steam.
The joy has run out of his business. But that's hardly the end of his story.
Finally forced to take two weeks to himself, he leaves the cafe in the capable hands of his newly promoted cafe manager, Henry (Riker Lynch).
But being open with Henry wasn't Peter's strong point, and when Peter leaves,...

Easterseals releases new, timely and critically important Public Service Announcements about safety during the Covid-19 pandemic, and encourages all of us to #StayHomeSaveLives.
The leading disability services nonprofit joined with filmmaker John Lawson to produce the spots, recruiting a group of twenty celebrated actors within the disability community to record at-home messages about why we all need to stay at home.
The PSA series reinforces that we are all in this together, and asks us to self-isolate, stay at home, and do our part to stop the spread of this virus – especially because people with disabilities, older adults and individuals with chronic diseases may be particularly vulnerable. There are more than 61 million children and adults living with a disability in the U.S., making it the largest minority group in the country.

Activist Jay Ruderman on March 3 presented an award to brothers Peter and Bobby Farrelly for their decades of championing people with disabilities, saying show business “has the power to change public perception like no other industry.”
The occasion was the sixth annual Morton E. Ruderman Award for Inclusion, presented by the Ruderman Family Foundation and held at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills.
Onstage, Jay Ruderman pointed out that U.S. unemployment is now 4%, but people with disabilities have 70% unemployment, despite being an estimated 20% of the population. The Farrelly brothers have cast people both in front of and behind the camera since their second film, the 1996 “Kingpin.”
Bobby Farrelly said, “Whatever we’ve given to the disability community, they’ve given us a lot more back.” Peter Farrelly exploded two prevalent myths: “That they will slow you down and cost you money. It’s just the opposite,” saying people with...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Apocalypse Then,” the finale episode of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse.”
Going into “Apocalypse Then,” it seemed nearly impossible “American Horror Story” could wrap things up in one final episode. But it managed to pull it off, though the finale moved at a breakneck speed in order to do so. And it even got another return to “Murder House” in before the hour-plus episode was up.
First, in the wake of the Coven’s annihilation at Michael Langdon’s (Cody Fern) hands, Myrtle Snow (Frances Conroy) paid a visit to Mutt and Jeff and demanded that Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt (Leslie Grossman) and her family be given spots in outpost No. 3 as part of the plan to hide a few witches there during the end of the world. This would allow Mallory (Billie Lourd) to remain safe while fully coming into her powers.

American Horror Story Season 8 Episode 7
One of the defining traits for American Horror Story: Apocalypse has to do with the fact that Ryan Murphy's love of using the same actors repeatedly allows viewers to see just how actors transform themselves into different characters using everything from accents to make-up and costumes. For example, after a cold opening involving Dinah practicing her voodoo skills in the wealthy hills of Los Angeles, there's a 70s style cinema bumper, and then we get the feature presentation: Bubbles McKee in A Christmas to Dismember.
Perhaps it's my failing eyesight, or perhaps it's a general unfamiliarity with Joan Collins, but when Bubbles appeared on screen, reenacting my favorite episode of Tales From The Crypt, I had...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Traitor,” the seventh episode of “American Horror Story: Apocalypse.”
It was always going to be hard for “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” to top the returns of Jessica Lange, Connie Britton and Dylan McDermott last week — and this week struggled a bit to meet that level of excitement. Fortunately, they saved a couple of other fun returns for “Traitor,” plus added some satisfying deaths and leaned hard into the idea that Mallory (Billie Lourd) is the next Supreme.
After Madison (Emma Roberts) reported back to the coven about her findings at Murder House, Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) decided they needed to take any available resource in order to stop the antichrist (Cody Fern) from becoming the new Supreme. So she tracked down Dinah Stevens (Adina Porter), a voodoo practitioner who took her to see Papa Legba (Lance Reddick).

Remember Ryan Murphy’s claim that September belonged to the witches? Well, the creative genius behind FX’s American Horror Story is about to do good on that promise by reuniting the core cast of “Coven.”
This past weekend, Murphy shared photographic evidence of the Ahs witches back together, which really poses more questions than answers… but more on that later.
Down below, you’ll see some of American Horror Story‘s finest characters, including Sarah Paulson as Cordelia Goode, Stevie Nicks as Stevie Nicks, Lily Rabe as Misty Day, Emma Roberts as Madison Montgomery, Taissa Farmiga as Zoe Benson, Gabourey Sidibe as Queenie and Frances Conroy as Myrtle Snow.
Conspicuous by their absence? Nan (Jamie Brewer) and Fiona (Jessica Lange), though we understand the latter is returning as Constance Langdon, Lange’s mystery character from “Murder House.” This, coupled with season 8’s apocalyptic setting, has led many to conclude...

Over the past few months, American Horror Story fans have been busy theorizing all the themes that Ryan Murphy's highly-anticipated eighth season might revolve around. Although "Radioactive" was a frontrunner, especially after Murphy teased the season would take place in "the future," the showrunner took the opportunity to throw loyal viewers yet another curve ball when he announced the real theme via Twitter on June 14. "The Coven/Murder House Ahs crossover season won't be happening next year," he tweeted. "Because it's happening This Year. Ahs #8 Witches Rule This September."

Winners of the 63rd annual Drama Desk Awards were revealed on June 3 during a ceremony at the Town Hall in midtown Manhattan that was hosted once again by Michael Urie. As with the Outer Critics Circle Awards, these kudos also consider both Broadway and off-Broadway fare. To that end, the Broadway production of “The Band’s Visit” was ineligible, save for its sound design which was deemed to be new and won with these voters.

The Broadway revival of “Carousel” and the new musical “SpongeBob SquarePants” led the list of nominations for the 2018 Drama Desk Awards, with “Carousel” snagging a dozen nods (including outstanding musical revival) and “SpongeBob” landing 11 (among them outstanding musical).

To understand the power of cults you have to look to history. Tonight we see the start of the flashbacks in American Horror Story: Cult, with the first focus being on Lena Dunham playing Valerie Solanas.
With Kai (Even Peters) enjoying the fame of the assassination attempt, it brings his cult new followers. With the focus becoming increasingly male, the female members start to feel left out. When Beverly Hope (Adina Porter) meets Bebe Babbitt (Frances Conroy) she is introduced to the history of Valerie Solanas and her Scum manifesto.
When watching the previous episodes of American Horror Story: Cult, it has been easy to see that Beverly Hope is one of the weak points in Kai’s growing group. Fiercely power-hungry and tired of having to take a back seat, it would never take much to set her off. This week we see that in the way that Kai pushes her away,...

Ever since reconciling earlier this year, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have kept their relationship out of the spotlight.
But on Friday, the on-again pair posed together at an event for the first time since their reunion to celebrate Cyrus’ latest magazine cover at Variety‘s Power of Women luncheon in Los Angeles.
The star, 23, was honored at the Audi-sponsored event for her ongoing charity work with her Happy Hippie Foundation, which she founded in 2014 as a non-profit to provide support to homeless youth and the Lgbtq community.

Jamie Brewer is possibly one of the most fearless characters on American Horror Story, which is to no surprise to the actress who's always been open about embracing fears. Brewer talked to Popsugar on the red carpet for American Horror Story: Hotel about how the Ahs cast are more than just co-workers to her, and instead a family of mentors she looks up to.

American Horror Story's Jamie Brewer has blazed more than one trail in her time. The actor was the first model with Down syndrome to ever walk the runway at New York Fashion Week, and when we caught up with her on the Emmys red carpet, she had a special message for Madeline Stuart, who is following in her footsteps. She also got real with us about whether she's ever been truly terrified on the Ahs set.

We know it’s hard to believe, but the last episode of Glee ~*eVeR*~ airs tonight. The New Directions have given us an incredible six years of singing, dancing, and awkward teen sexual tension, but it’s time for them to leave the show choir room for good. Admittedly, the most recent seasons of Glee haven’t been that great (this season especially, with its self-referencing jokes and out-of-control fat-shaming). However, we can’t let Ryan Murphy’s inability to craft a third act stop us from honoring Glee. When it was good, it was really fucking good. And, more importantly, it changed culture forever.
From putting gay teens on primetime to introducing us to living Ken doll/actual sex god Darren Criss, Glee wasn’t afraid to go where television had never been before. It broke racial, sexual, and gender boundaries — not to mention it brought the musical back in a big way.
