After devoting years to writing, funding, filming, and editing their passion projects, the last thing many indie filmmakers want to hear is they have to release the thing themselves. However, as the industry becomes more fragmented and traditional theatrical distribution deals dwindle, self-distribution is starting to look more appealing.
“The market is changing so fast,” said Chris Horton, director of the Sundance Institute’s Creative Distribution Initiative (formerly Sundance Artist Services). “Marketing and distribution knowledge and skills are now an inseparable part of what we think should be in a producer’s repertoire.”
