Supacell is a British superhero series heading to Netflix in June from Rapman, and here’s the trailer.
While America generally has the monopoly on superhero films, Britain has had its fair share of caped crusaders over the years.
The most recent example is Emma Moran’s Extraordinary, which is now available to watch on Itvx. From 2009 to 2013, Howard Overman achieved huge success with five series of irreverent comedy drama Misfits. Drew Pearce, who went on to co-write Iron Man 3 with Shane Black, began his career writing the little seen superhero sitcom No Heroics in 2008.
Perhaps the biggest shame, though, is that the film adaptation of clasic 1970s cartoon Bananaman, which was voiced by Bill Oddie, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Graeme Garden, also known as The Goodies, never materialised, though a stage musical premiered at the Southwark Playhouse in 2017.

"You can save her..." "How?" "You need all four. One dies, she dies." Netflix has unveiled a first look teaser trailer for a thriller series titled Supacell, arriving for streaming this summer. It's the next creation by the Blue Story director who goes under the moniker "Rapman", an urban London story about people with super powers who have to join together. "Find them, before it's too late." When a regular group of ordinary people from South London are gifted with superpowers, they find their new abilities have made them targets for a powerful entity. The series stars Tosin Cole as Michael, Nadine Mills as Sabrina, Eric Kofi Abrefa as Andre, Calvin Demba as Rodney, Josh Tedeku as Tazer, Adelayo Adedayo as Dionne, Rayxia Ojo as Sharleen, and Giacomo Mancini as Spud. There's only a little bit of footage in this first teaser, but enough to make me intrigued. Looks pretty cool.

Last year, Marshall’s character Humphrey Goodman starred in spin-off Beyond Paradise, which paired him with Not Going Out star Sally Bretton and relocated the action to Cornwall. A further spin off, entitled Return to Paradise was announced last year, with action taking place in Australia.

The rapid advancement of AI technology and all of its potential applications may offer an exciting, albeit somewhat daunting, future. However, when filmmaker Calvin Demba stumbled upon the concept of ‘relationship robots’ he found himself pondering the type of person who might purchase such a humanoid and to what ends. That train of thought culminated in his BFI Network backed directorial debut BabyDolls, which examines fragile male masculinity through the story of Billy (played by Frankie Wilson) whose inability to hold down a healthy relationship leads him to purchase a bot, falsely believing that he can continue to perpetuate his selfish and damaging behaviours without repercussions. Demba, an award winning actor and performer, has crafted a short where his protagonist’s self-justifying narration offers a tongue-in-cheek insight into the extremely questionable motivations which could led such a man to embark down this non-traditional road to, supposed, happiness. Ahead of the...

It feels like we’re all sleeping on Supacell a bit. This new Netflix superhero series was first announced back in November 2021, has a super-strong cast, and has been filming since summer 2022, but there’s very little news about it. It doesn’t even have its own Wikipedia page yet.
Let’s put that right and get better acquainted with this fresh upcoming British superhero drama that could rival the likes of Misfits and Extraordinary:
Supacell Was Created By Pioneering Rapper-Turned-Filmmaker Rapman
Impressively, Rapman – real name Andrew Onwubolu – is only 33 but already has an MBE for services to drama and music. He’s known for dealing with socially conscious themes like suicide, blood donors, and domestic abuse.
You’ll most likely know Rapman for Blue Story, his critically-acclaimed 2019 film, told through the medium of rap, which starred Karla Simone-Spence (The Confessions of Frannie Langton) and Top Boy’s Michael Ward,...

Warning: contains plot spoilers for The Rig finale.
The Rig may have started out like a Doctor Who story missing the Tardis, but it ended up as an absorbing eco-thriller fable. Creator David Macpherson’s series layers sci-fi invention over geological theory to tell a story about the environmental extinction and the survival of planet Earth.
Set aboard a remote Scottish oil rig (is there any other kind of Scottish oil rig?), the six-part series follows the crew of the Kinloch Bravo platform. Following a mysterious tremor and the loss of all communications with the outside, the rig is surrounded by a thick fog, stranding them at sea.
The crew learns that their workplace is scheduled for decommissioning by energy giant Pictor. Tensions flare, and crewmember Baz (Calvin Demba) is exposed to the fog and mysteriously survives what would have been a fatal fall. When Baz starts having visions and ranting about rings and waves,...

She’s the one to make sure there’s dinner on the table, money to buy supplies, and that her dad’s prescriptions are filled. While other kids at her Montana school are wondering what they might do after graduation, Mickey’s halfheartedly resigned that this is her lot in life, to pick up her drunk dad from the local jail or hospital, to worry about him constantly or to watch out for his mood swings. But a series of events close to the end...

While other kids at her Montana school are wondering what they might do after graduation, Mickey’s halfheartedly resigned that this is her lot in life, to pick up her drunk dad from the local jail or hospital, to worry about him constantly or to watch out for his mood swings. But a series of events close to the end...

Old fashioned independent films, ones that are content just to observe realistic people as they navigate the world, well…they’re becoming rarer and rarer. In part, the demands of the box office limit these endeavors, but it only takes one filmmaker to remind you how vital they can be. This week, Mickey and the Bear opened, with a powerful debut feature writing and directorial outing by Annabelle Attanasio. Her keenly realized flick has a pair of tremendous performances at the forefront, for sure, but her matured storytelling is a rock as well. Together, the three make this an indie that deserves all of the acclaim it’s been receiving all year long. This movie is a character study, centered on two damaged individuals, who also happen to be father and daughter. Taking place in the small Montana town of Anaconda, we meet the strong willed teenager Mickey Peck (Camila Morrone...

On the night of her 18th birthday, Mickey Peck (Camila Morrone) and her Ptsd-addled dad (James Badge Dale as Henry Peck) take a rare trip out of their trailer for a celebratory bite at a local diner. Things start off well enough, but then Mickey makes the mistake of casually mentioning her late mother. Like many drug addicts, Henry is too focused on what he needs right now to handle any talk about the past; perversely, however, he’s as sober-minded as it gets when it comes to the future. “The truth is that one day you’re going to forget about me,” he says to his daughter as she eats a cheap burger with a plastic tiara on her head. “That’s the way it is.” And he might be right. In fact, the most charitable moments of Annabelle Attanasio’s small but deeply felt “Mickey and the Bear...

Utopia has dropped the first trailer for director/writer Annabelle Attanasio’s “Mickey and the Bear.” Attanasio is an actress turned filmmaker known from the small screen for her roles on “Bull” and “The Knick.” “Mickey and the Bear” marks her first feature as director, and it stars up-and-comer Camila Morrone, previously seen in the films “Death Wish” and “Never Goin’ Back.”
Set in the rural back country of Anaconda, Montana, Morrone is headstrong teenager Mickey, who’s trying to keep her single veteran father (James Badge Dale) afloat despite his opioid addiction and grief over the death of his wife. Mickey, however, harbors her own dreams of heading to the west coast and going to college, and she must put everything on the line in pursuit of her own independence.

“Mickey and the Bear” reps an assured feature debut for Annabelle Attanasio, who wrote and directed this straightforward but skillfully nuanced drama about a troubled father-daughter relationship. Camila Morrone plays the titular motherless small-town Montana teen who needs to decide if what she wants from life is more than just being the minder of her Ptsd-afflicted father, an Iraq war veteran.
There’s nothing wildly original in form or content to this modest tale. But it’s never obvious or melodramatic, delivering a satisfying degree of emotional resonance while providing James Badge Dale an arresting role as the problematic dad.
Though we don’t get this intel until fairly late, Mickey’s mother died of cancer — like, apparently, quite a number of people do in Anaconda, Mont. (a town that had a longtime mineral-processing plant generating hazardous waste). Ever since that unspecified point in time, Mickey, an only child, has been housekeeper,...

The 26th edition of the SXSW Film Festival will feature movies directed by Harmony Korine and Olivia Wilde, an untitled romantic comedy starring Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron and a concert film with comedian Kathy Griffin.
The annual gathering in Austin, Texas, which starts on March 8, will open with Jordan Peele’s “Us,” which was previously announced. The thriller stars Lupita Nyong’o, Winston Duke and Elisabeth Moss.
There will be 102 features and TV episodes featured over nine days.
In recent years, SXSW has upped its game as a festival that covers a lot of ground. It reliably launches a few spring studio hits, such as last year’s “The Quiet Place” and “Blockers,” and also discovers under-the-radar storytellers. For attendees, there’s also keynote addresses with filmmakers and actors.
The standouts in this year’s lineup include Korine’s “The Beach Bum,” a much-anticipated comedy starring Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg and Zac Efron.

It’s easy enough to understand why Idris Elba would choose to make “Yardie” for his directorial debut. For one thing, it’s the kind of story that seems pretty hard to mess up: Adapted from Victor Headley’s 1992 novel of the same name, “Yardie” is a nuts-and-bolts revenge saga about a young Jamaican kid who survives the gang warfare in his home country, grows up to be a low-level hood, and then traffics a brick of coke to London with the ulterior motive of finding the man who killed his brother. Borrowing heavily from the likes of “City of God,” “Goodfellas,” and “Layer Cake,” it’s a premise so familiar that even a first-time filmmaker should be able to wrangle it into decent shape. And yet…
And yet it’s hard to understand virtually anything else about “Yardie.” Literally. This flat and formulaic crime yarn has all sorts of flaws — woefully under-developed characters,...

Scott and Annalise (Tamaryn Payne) have harboured feelings for each other for some time, but have so far shown no signs of becoming a proper couple. However, Demba told Digital Spy that next week's Hollyoaks episodes - which explore a turbulent time for Scott at home in London - could prove to be a turning point for the story. Demba commented: "What happens to Scott when he's back in London does give him a different attitude towards life. It feels like he needs to man up and start facing his problems head-on. "He really needs to seize the day, so when he does come back to Chester, he's meaning business. He's going to try and sort this out once and for all." Scott is good friends with (more...
