For everyone who has ever suspected that teachers are just as messed up as the students they teach, this may be the comedy for you. Originally an Amazon test pilot, “Those Who Can’t” debuts with a bit of a revamp on TruTV Thursday night, proving that teachers really aren’t all that they’re cracked up to be. Much like the kid who was bullied in high school and then grows up to be a cop, these three teachers (played here by Adam Cayton-Holland, Andrew Orvedahl and Ben Roy), are completely out of their element and utterly tripping on their power.

Many things have changed about the new TruTV scripted series Those Who Can’t in the four years since it was created by the three-man comedy troupe the Grawlix as a pilot for Amazon, but one in particular was crucial to the success of the show, and is instructive for all other male creative teams: They figured out the girl. Speaking last week with Vulture’s Jesse David Fox at a screening of the show, which debuts on February 11 and follows the misadventures of a group of bumbling high-school teachers, the two attending Grawlix, Andrew Overdahl and Adam Cayton-Holland (Ben Roy was the absent troupe member), recalled how they approached their female character when making the Amazon pilot. “We were like, it’s a TV show, you have to have a love interest,” said Cayton-Holland. “That’s how it works, right?” That character became Abbey Logan, the high-school librarian. The...
